Had lunch at salsa's on Phillips Highway today. I ordered three crunchy tacos with steak and my son ordered steak fajita nachos. My tacos were so stale. They were un edible. My son's food was bland with congealed white cheese on the top. I felt horrible for our waitress who had to deliver this. We will not be returning read more

I stopped here to try their tacos and margaritas and they did not disappoint. I got the Carne Asada tacos. I got it with no beans cause I don't like beans and they gave me extra rice. Staff is super friendly and quick and I love the interior of the restaurant, even though I didn't take any photos of it. It's super cute. I ordered a fajita nacho with only chorizo, onions and queso dip on it. When it came out it had chorizo, onions, green peppers, tomatoes and melted cheese. When I asked how I get queso dip instead of melted cheese they said I could purchase it. read more

My friend decided to have a small intimate birthday here for her 6 year old and we had an amazing time. The inside is so beautiful filled with traditional decor. Our server was so nice , patient and perfect for the occasion dealing with small kids. They played the birthday music for the kids and we all had a blast. Each dish was fresh, hot and delicious. Very few Mexican restaurants serve Chile Rellenos in Jacksonville... fewer do them well... today I enjoyed one stuffed with beef and one with chicken served with beans and rice... they were awesome... huge, pleasing to the eye, and delicious... the beans and rice were a perfect complement... the salsa served with chips was fresh and excellent... I'm so impressed with the meal I had to share... the Chile Rellenos are in small print on the menu so I suspect they don't sell many... don't make the mistake in overlooking their availability... you'll thank me later... muy bueno read more

This place has the BEST Mexican food. I am always shocked when we go and there is maybe one other table with people, but the food and drinks are delicious and the service is always great. Today I have to say it was a little disappointing. The waitress was wonderful always very helpful I like her. However, we had some mishaps today and that's to be expected as we're all human. First of all I got sweet tea instead of unsweet tea not a problem taken care of. I ordered the chicken fajita quesadilla. They brought out chicken fajita nachos. Not gonna let it go to waste, so I just ate around the chips because I did not want them (which is why I asked for the quesadilla). Tea refill comes and you guessed it, sweet tea again. So today just wasn't as strong attention to detail. I'm not the biggest fan of the liquid cheese, which is what the nachos were covered in again Another reason why I didn't care to have nachos. There was no way I was going to have them just throw it away so I just again ate around the chips. I have been visiting this location close to 10 years. The staff and food has always been amazing. The margaritas are amazing and do not have the syrup flavor which I love. Recently they changed the menu and switched up how they make the chile rellenos which was very disappointing. Hopefully they go back to the original recipe. Pizza birria was unique but needs a bit more umpf, this is a new item too. Street corn was to die for and they have a birria ramen that was amazing. Salsas is a small chain of Mexican restaurants and this particular location is on Philips Highway on the south side of Jacksonville, Florida. Overall, this Salsas is a decent choice for Mexican restaurant. They have multiple locations and for a chain restaurant, they are pretty good. I have been to this location a few times before. I decided to go here again for dinner. Parking was a little difficult to find, being that it is a shared parking lot, and it took me a couple of minutes to actually find a parking spot. The service here was slightly slow that day, and after a 30-minute wait, I finally received my food. The restrooms here were clean and presentable that day. The ambiance of this restaurant is just regular, and there's really nothing to brag about. For an appetizer, I decided to order guacamole and chips. The guacamole was fresh and flavofull. I just add some pepper and a squeeze of lemon juice in it to enhance the flavor. For my main dish, I decided to order the carnitas dish with salsa verde on top. That green sause is very good and very spicy. That green sauce will catch up to you very quickly. So, if you are not used to spicy sauces, I highly suggest not getting the green sauce. You can dry the red dauce instead. I think I will try out this location once again, and hopefully, the service will be slightly faster next time. read more

We stopped in here after a movie for a quick drink and dessert. I got the sangria and my husband got a margarita. He loved his margarita and I enjoyed the sangria but I really really loved the fried ice cream. We sat at the bar and talked to some of the regular customers. The staff was very friendly. We hope to go back again and try something else next time. read more

It really pains me to write this update as I've loved this place for years. But I can't recommend it after today's meal. It's been getting more and more rundown inside over the years and it's never been a big deal because the food was good. But they've changed some recipes and now the food isn't even good. The Chiles rellenos I previously loved are now greasy, battered, and devoid of flavor (how is this possible?) the cheese and sauce are both different and not for the better. My son said the tamales aren't as good. The beans and rice are both ick, with the rice also being far more oily. Service wasn't great either. Salsa tasted of overripe tomatoes. Server spilled my husband's water all over me with barely an apology (I get he was likely embarrassed, but it seems only courteous to make an effort). Just too many strikes today, so I suggest steering clear with the hopes maybe they invest some love back into this place. read more

We opted to try Salsas on Phillips on a Friday night. Luckily when we got there there was no wait. The interior was cheery and brightly colored. We sat down and looked over the menu. We asked Nugget what he wanted and based on the kid's meal options and he said Mac and cheese. Chips and salsa were dropped off while we looked over the menu. The chips were crisp and had just enough salt. The waitress came by and we ordered a few Dos Equis beers and nuggets Mac and cheese. The server came back shortly and said they were out of Dos Equis and Mac and cheese (bummer). We asked nugget what he wanted off the kid's menu and he wasn't having it. After naming what seemed like 20 things off the menu the only thing he wanted was queso and chips, so that's what we ordered him. I ordered a Modelo and a beef chimichanga for dinner, which came with rice and beans. Everything came out pretty quickly and my meal looked huge. The beef chimichanga was good, seasoned beef, some queso on top. My only recommendations would be I wish the shell of the chimichanga was crispier and they had added more queso on top. The rice was nice and soft and the retried beans were flavorful. Do not order food to go here! I order a salad Vallarta that is supposed to come with lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, cheese, black beans, Avocado slices, onions and rice and an option of steak. My salad had no lettuce, no tomatoes. It was filled with black beans at the bottom right out of a can, steak, a few slices of peppers and avocado. The entire bottom was all black beans. My friends and I decided to try out this place. We have a few Mexican restaurants we go to in JAX. Most of them are okay. They're consistent in terms of the quality of food and service. They are also pretty standard Mexican fare. Nothing to write home about, per se. Having had one meal here I'm certain that this restaurant is gonna be our standard. I had the Verde Carnitas. The portion size was huge!! The carnitas was tender and perfectly flavored. The rice and beans were excellent. These are the real deal! One of my friends had the steak and shrimp. Both were perfectly grilled and succulent. And the service was excellent. The staff was friendly, attentive and a delight! And they were never intrusive. They were simply sweet-natured people. We read the reviews before stopping in and gave it a go for dinner anyway. We were greeting by a big smile at the door and were seated promptly (on a Tuesday night). The server was friendly as well but we were all smiles so that helps. The decor was pretty cool... so I don't know what those reviews are about and yes it is a bit dim in there which we kind of take for ambience. House Margaritas are pre-made and mostly mixer so we had to upgrade so keep that in mind. They are made for their $3.99 special that's from 11-7 which explains it... and we're used to La Nop quality. Food was decent and reasonably priced. We're not talking about a high end restaurant here nor the best mexican we have had. We have been to better and worse. We would definitely return when in the neighborhood. This is was not a 1 star experience by and means and the 5 really has to do with the bad first margarita... but we will be back. read more

First time eating at a salsas i wasn't that impressed to make it a regular spot. Inside was nice love the paintings. The booths are very small being 8 months pregnant I want able to comfortably sit at any of their booths without feeling squished so I requested to move to a table. Food was just okay.. the shrimp a la diabla wasn't spicy at all. I love this dish at other Mexican restraunts and love it for the yummy spice however this had none. I came here with some friends not really expecting much, the reviews weren't great, and to me seems like every other cheesy Mexican restaurant, but i was feeling some nachos and I always like to try places I have never been to before so in we went. It is decorated brightly with paintings, we were seated quickly, our server could really barely speak english ( which I like! good sign) We got a bunch of things fajitas, taco salad, sampler app plate, and a steak....I have to say no one was complaining about their food....we were all happily chowing away....I got the sampler app plate and it was huge....shredded chicken nachos, cheese quesadilla, 2 fried beef chimichangas?, and a nice scoop of guac, sour cream, and pico on lettuce....it was way more then enough for one person, i ate some and the guys finished it.... Okay, I have to come clean, I did not mean to come to this restaurant. I was taking my kids to a new place for lunch, and while Yelp said "open", the actual restaurant was closed on Sundays. Oh well, what to do? Yes, go next doora nd try Salsa's Mexican Restuarant. When we walked in, I was skeptical, was this another La Nopalera knock off, or something original and tasty like Senor Fresh Mex? Well guess what, it was not a knock off and while it was not quite as good as SFM, it certainly is not somewhere you should avoid. My actual rating of the food was 3 stars, but I found a silver lining, they serve their lunch menu on Sunday. Now who does that anymore? Every where I eat on Sundays, with few exceptions, does not serve the lunch menu past week days. So Salsa's gets an extra star for serving a lunch menu on weekends. Now onto the food. My son had the Super Lunch, a dish he would learn to call "the Sampler" because it had a number of differnt mexican dishes on it, plus he fell in love with the sweet tea, which is usually not a strong point of any Mexican menu. My youngest got the Kid's Buritto and was completely satisfied and full. Not an extensive kids menu, but for her, it was perfect. I decided on the chicken fajitas and was glad I did, lots of onions, peppers and chicken, along with rice and beans. A few misses here and there. When I asked for a tiny cup of guacamole for my daughter, the waiter brought out a small bowl and charged $3.99. I understand the need to charge, but it seemed much too expensive for what was delivered. Also the kids plate did not come with beans and rice, only rice. Okay, that is just a preference, but not biggie. Service was good and the server made appropriate suggestions when asked. The decor is interesting and kind of "cheesy" in a very fun way. Food is good but never consistent. We eat here 1-2 times a week, and usually order the same things. One week, you get plenty of meat, and the next week, less than half of that. We both have problems eating raw onion, and while our written request ALWAYS states, "no onions," guess what? Half the time, they overdose our order with big chunks of raw onion.
