Salt & Straw is definitely one of those places that's known for doing the absolute most with their flavors and honestly that's kind of the fun of going. Their monthly May flower series right now focuses on floral flavors and using flowers as actual flavor profiles instead of just decoration, which sounded really interesting in theory. The seasonal lineup included flavors like Jasmine Milk Tea Almond Stracciatella, Strawberry Tres Leches, Rhubarb Crumble with Toasted Anise, Saffron Milk with Wildflower Honey, and Coffee Chamomile Sherbet. Very spring coded. I sampled the Jasmine Milk Tea Almond Stracciatella first because on paper that flavor combination sounds PERFECT to me. I love jasmine milk tea, I love almond flavors, and stracciatella is usually my go-to if I'm getting gelato. But honestly? It fell kind of flat. Nothing about it really stood out and the flavors just didn't hit the way I expected them to. I ended up getting the Strawberry Tres Leches instead which was definitely better. It leaned really heavily into the strawberry flavor and then the tres leches flavor slowly comes through after. We also tried the Taco Bell collab "tacolate" inspired dessert that came with mango jalapeño and wild berry cinnamon sauce packets on the side. Honestly... the sauces didn't really do much for me. The actual taco itself was okay. It's basically cinnamon ice cream packed into a waffle cone taco shell that's dipped in dark chocolate and puffed quinoa. Cool concept but it didn't really wow me flavor wise. The Salted Malted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough was probably the strongest thing we tried. Definitely saltier than your average cookie dough ice cream, but in a good way. You could really taste the malted fudge flavor and it gave everything this deeper almost umami-like richness that worked really well with the cookie dough pieces. I do appreciate how creative Salt & Straw is because nowhere else is really doing flavors like this, but overall nothing completely blew me away this visit. The taco is made up of a cinnamon-ancho ice cream held by a waffle cone shell and covered in dark chocolate and quinoa crunchies. Each bite was nice to get a bit of everything; I especially enjoyed the crunchies though you gotta be careful eating because it can fall apart a bit. Also loved how it came with two sauce packets reminiscent of Taco Bell's hot sauce --so fun and creative! Love the idea and concept here despite its high price tag. It's worth trying once! Its a great way to get your favorites and maybe include something new to try. The store is nice and very open and spacious inside so even when the line is long you do not feel cramped waiting. Staff is very nice and helpful (especially when you are not quite sure which fabulous flavor you want to choose). Great location at UTC as well, easy to get in and out. Love that they use silvers spoons for sampling to reduce waste. My family & I like to stop by here after we shop around. I'm excited that they have the choco taco too! It's much smaller than I remember, but I feel like the quality is better. They don't have too much seating, just a long table for people to stand & enjoy their ice cream by the window. However, it can get pretty crowded if there's a long line. The people eating their ice cream by the window & people standing in line are practically bumping into each other. There is 1 bench outside though that's big enough for 2-3 people to sit on. Other than that, I think it's more meant for people to just come, get ice cream, & leave.
