We love this place. It's always a highlight of a week to go here. We came here about a year ago and we had a weird customer service experience. Since then we have had the best service. Great food. The new octopus appetizer is so yummy. We love going here for brunch on the weekends and getting some tacos and oysters. We randomly went for dinner a couple Saturday's ago. Our waiter was so nice. We could tell something was going on in the kitchen. There was multiple large parties sat at the same time. The waiter was so sweet and let us know. My fresh fettuccini with crab and sausage was heavenly and my husband's burger was incredible. Also, had perhaps the best cocktail ever (or two!) with a cucumber infused tequila and cilantro. Second time here, was somewhat refreshed by the decor the first visit(previously a depressing Chinese shithole) but the food didn't wow me by any means. Ok, second shot: lunch/bar menu? Dinner resumes at 4:30? Ok so 2 tacos table position#1 2 tacos table position #3 and position #4(me) goes for the fish and chips. All really simple safe bets for any competent kitchen to execute...wrong. Both who had the "grilled" cod tacos experience the same: cold and slightly undercooked, did not taste fresh at all, I didn't taste them but the fish didn't look so hot. My fish and chips were sad. Wasn't fresh and for fuck sake clean the fryers out! Those were the worst looking, sad shitty fries ever, I get it they're thin cut, but the old hush puppy batter and it just tasted old, change the grease sad basket of fish and chips! Portions? We are all starving. And to the server: you forgot my chimichurri AND my kids hot sauce... I tipped $8 on $32 and that's cuz I'm not a dick. Nice wine list and interesting cocktails. Great service from everyone, but Carlito who was staffing the cold seafood station at the bar, stood out. What a disappointment! I ordered the Dungeness crab spaghetti dish and it was overwhelmingly salty. I could only eat a few bites and gave the rest to my dogs. I got the scallops for my husband which he enjoyed. I also asked for utensils since we are visiting the area and they did not provide any even though they said they would. I've eaten at this restaurant a few times, including in its old location back of the Jacoby Building. It's been a bit of a mixed bag, sometimes better than other times, but this last visit it was very good. First, the new space is a huge improvement, airy and has nice light on a summer evening. Eating at the bar is pretty comfortable, and the bartenders were just friendly enough and had good coordination with the kitchen staff. They've got some decent cocktails going, including one called The Oyster, and some unusual wines including some unfiltered ones. The snow crab was a little meager for the price, but tasted fresh. Good with the drawn butter (they keep it on a flame, nice touch). The chilean sea bass, on the other hand, was a generous portion, and had very tasty sides. A kale caesar salad to finish it off. We added fried anchovies (this is a fish restaurant, after all), which were too few. For bread, we had a great flatbread dish with a soft cheese spread and garnishes, and grilled bread with anchoy butter. Expect a meal like this to set you back some, maybe around $150 before tax and tip. read more

Beautiful restaurant. Great food ! We had dinner here tonight and enjoyed everything: our plates were completely cleaned. -Grilled bread with anchovy butter A+ totally worth it. Warm and crispy sourdough. Butter was eclectic, and delicious. - clam chowder. A- liked this one too. Had peas in it which I don't like but still we licked this one up. - catch of the day- scallops risotto. Topped with arugula. Perhaps the best dish but everything was great. - grilled halibut - crispy halibut but soft inner. The asparagus was dipped in this heavenly sauce that was the perfect balance to the halibut. This place is great. I've been here twice now and both times were amazing. The food is very flavorful, unique, and delicious. Anything you get is great. Drink wise----I don't like tequila or mixed drinks but The Green Flash drink was incredible. It had cucumber, mint, lime, etc and was so refreshing. You didn't taste the tequila at all and I definitely felt it. There was a lovely hostess there who was so helpful and nice. I think her name was Iris. She made the whole experience wonderful! We stopped by this cute little place after a long day of hiking in the Red Woods! The ambience is great, very aesthetically pleasing. Our waiter Trent was very kind and helpful. The seafood platter was delicious, the raw oysters were amazing (definitely a must try). The mussels were delicious and dipping the garlic bread into the sauce was heavenly. Charred octopus was good as well. I had the clam pasta for dinner and it was yummy, very filling, i just wish it was creamier but that might be a personal preference. Excellent food and service. Pricy but delivers on quality. We called in to check if they were open, and glad we did as they work on a reservation system. We got a spot about an hour later. The food prices are high, as is correctly mentioned in the other reviews on Yelp. So, although the seafood is of good quality and very nicely presented, there are places you can get same quality for lesser prices on the Eureka- Arcata coast. However, the vegetarian options here are better, and served with as much care as the seafood ( which is not the case in most seafood restaurants!). The stuffed acorn squash was a perfectly cooked and presented dish, with a good balanced yogurt based sauce, slightly but not too chewy farro, and a melt in your mouth baked squash which served as the "dish". The house cocktails are also really good, and standard priced. So definitely worth the splurge! read more

Short version: food took 1 hr to get food, and food was poor quality. Full version: we ordered two entrees for pick up. One was poke, which is raw fish plus salad. One was crab pasta, which is mostly noodles and a bit of steamed crab. The staff told us it would be 30 min. A bit long for what the food was, but okay. While we waited, we saw a Doordash delivery person feel upset his order was taking so long. The staff told him, "there's nothing we can do about it." He lost wages waiting for the delayed order. Another woman waiting finally lost it and got angry with the staff, saying she'd been waiting "forever". The staff brought her her order 5 min later. We ultimately got our food 1 hr later. The poke was a small portion with soggy chips, and the pasta was very noodle heavy (yellow egg noodle, like ramen) with little crab. Only plus: it's a nice ambiance if you can get a table and for that 1 star ;-) read more

We stayed in Arcata and stumbled upon Salt Fish for dinner.Terrific seafood; the soup was great, and the special octopus dish I had savory and, more important, tender and not rubbery as lesser places can serve. We picky, one guy owns a winery, etc. We live in Sonoma County and were not expecting too much in the way of eats in the mysterious far north, but Salt Fish blew us away. We ordered the hush puppies as an appetizer and they were crispy, hot and seasoned just right. I had the seared scallop risotto. The scallops were big, sweet and seared perfectly while the risotto was the right amount of dente while creamy. The hubs and girl-child had fish and chips that were crispy and not overly battered. The absolute best Charred Octopus I've ever tasted. The layers of flavor packed into this perfectly portioned appetizer called me back for a second visit. The chorizo, olives, arugula, sun dried tomato and spice all played their part along with a most tender and delicious Octopus. This time, I chose to have the Octopus as a main course. I also ordered a side of the seasonal Vegetables. It was a combination of Zucchini and Summer Squash sautéed and served in a cast iron skillet with a touch of heat. It was a perfect compliment. For dessert, I opted for the Strawberry Panna cotta. The fruit was a swapped at the last moment for the Peach. It was assured to be more fresh and delicious. (I saw them at the Farmers Market the day before so I knew they were locally sourced.) It was carefully, thinly sliced and stacked in a fan formation atop the Panna cotta. This was our first time at Salt and we were not disappointed. Had the steamer clams, 1/2lb crab legs and the fish tacos. The service by Kristen and the others was excellent from start to finish. If you like mixed drinks you shouldn't be disappointed, ours were outstanding. I would have given 4 stars because the crab legs were a touch salty, but the reaction when we brought it to there attention was professional and I'm confident they'll address it and for that they get credit until they prove otherwise. We ordered the calamari, clam chowder, fish and chips, two grilled oysters, and one raw oyster. The calamari was great and came with a delicious sauce. The fish was fresh and good, except I didn't really like the tartar sauce. It kind of tasted like it was yogurt based rather than mayonnaise based because it had a consistency similar to a liquid. I didn't try the raw oyster, but I had the grilled oyster and thought it was delicious. I gave this place four stars instead of five because of the clam chowder. The carrots and peas in the clam chowder tasted like they were from a frozen veggies package. The clam chowder itself was bland and tasted just okay. I definitely had better. The service was great as the waitress was attentive to our needs and we did not have to wait too long before we got what we needed.
