We had some trouble with our reservation. I had called a week prior to make a reservation only to show up with my party of 7 and told we didn't have one. Different phone number on door vs yelp, was told I had the wrong number, but MILLIE completely understood my frustration and rearranged some tables to fit our party. I cannot thank her enough for getting us in. It was my fiance's birthday & we drove an hour for this reservation. BOBBY(?) was our waiter and he was great! He always checked on us and brought whatever we asked for in a timely manner. The whole vibe of the restaurant is fun, the food was amazing, and the drinks weren't bad themselves. Been here a handful of times and always get bad service. Too many tables and too few servers who care about their jobs. No toilet paper in the bathroom, no silverware while our warm food is getting cold on the table, unable to order drinks during our meal. I had to order from the bar and our waiter canceled our order so he could place it himself. We split the Bill and they charged one card twice and the other not at all. We go in the next day to figure out the card thing and talk to a manager about the poor experience and literally nothing was resolved. We were told that it was because the menu is new and they were busy - menu was barely new and if you can't give someone service don't seat them. Salt Fish House is always a go to when visiting Arcata. It's in the basement of the plaza where the Chinese restaurant used to be when I lived up there, and it is crazy how nicely they renovated the place. The food is quite good- the oysters are phenomenal, the salmon is great, and all the other items I've had are good. Drinks are solid. Yep. It deserves the rating . I literally have nothing negative to say about this place in the 3 times in a 3 week span that I've been coming here. First time I came I ordered the "catch of the day". It was salmon, not my favorite fish, I tried it anyway based off how the waiter described the whole dish. I like my salmon cooked a certain way so it's not so "fishy", it came out perfect without me having to say anything about my preference, along with roasted potatoes and spinach and something else. I was impressed. Second time I kept it light with a Caesar salad with prawns. No complaints here. Third time I went with the fish tacos, two fries and one grilled. All above average in size, very fresh tasty tacos with a lime on the side. Again, it was awesome and no complaints. Again, impressed with the food and the consistency overall from this place . With all 3 of these meals I paired it with a brown derby, one of their bourbon based cocktails. I'm not a bourbon drinker usually but this is my new favorite drink . Can't tell ya the ingredients on top of my head but it's gooooood. I've never been here and had to wait, literally, always seated right away and service is consistently way above average, Bobby is the man. They're one of the only restaurants in town open past 8pm. We spent a lovely evening here on the patio at sunset. We both had fish and chips and the fish was wonderfully crisp and so much more plentiful than other places I've had at other places. Very fresh and tender. We shared an orange panna cotta and it was perfectly creamy with the orange being a perfect freshness. Our server was spot on. I've been traveling across the US for two weeks, and I've had fish for dinner almost daily. But the meal and experience I had at the Salt Fish House in Arcata was the best so far. I had the most delicious grilled halibut, served with a light cream sauce and beautiful mushroom and asparagus side. I was almost in tears it was so good. The place is a bit loud but so worth the visit. It's otherwise a very cool vibe in a town I feel fortunate to have visited. I live in coastal Maine so I know good fish when I taste it. First let me say, the bartenders and staff are awesome! They're attentive, friendly and get the job done. Their drinks are great. The overall design of the restaurant is very trendy and cool. For impressions on the two entrees we ordered, the fish and chips - very meh (semi tasteless rectangular pieces of cod and small fries). The fish tacos were pretty, but very bland. Holy crap their happy hour is unbelievable. My wife and I came in after several hours on the road. She was craving oysters and Salt did not disappoint. We were served by seemingly every able bodied person in the place. They were cheerful, helpful, and super cool. We came in during their fabulous happy hour. We ordered fish and chips off of the limited happy hour menu thinking it would be a plate of small bites, but it was a full order. We had two orders of their super fresh oysters, an order of broiled oysters, (I told you we had been driving all day - lay off!) local beers, and a nice dry rose. Parking is a nightmare unless you know about the super secret parking lot. Located on the east side of the square, Salt Fish House is the perfect end to a long day at the beach. This upscale restaurant has a surprising element in each dish. Our party ordered the Salmon Poke as a starter. The very fresh fish and cool cucumber melded with the soft avocado and crisp watercress. Served with crispy wonton crisps, this dish is plenty to share or enjoy as an entree. The Country Chicken Sandwhich has a crispy chicken breast, fresh cabbage, and a spicy aioli that delivers the heat. Served with sweet and dill pickles and a side of shoestring fries. Fish and chips can be difficult to get right, but Salt Fish House got it just right. Beautifully golden, the fried cod stayed crisp because the oil was hot enough that it didn't linger. The inside was juicy, and we'll seasoned. Crispy, moist, and delicate fish is what we want! The polenta and prawns was a little odd. The polenta is crispy and fried. I found it under seasoned and squeaky in texture. The relish is too sweet and not complimentary to the polenta, which is hard to do since the polenta is basically so bland that it tastes like nothing. I'm sure the shrimp were delicious given their appearance, but I was going to send the dish back and I didn't want to be "that" customer who eats all the protein BEFORE sending it back. Instead, I ordered the Grilled Shrimp Tacos. 3 beautiful tacos arrived in front of me. The color contrast of the chipotle aioli atop the sliced red cabbage and radish is striking. The soft white fish has a pleasant char from the grill, and the soft corn tortilla encased the lot in a warm completeness. Beverages are pricey here, but try the Cucumber Cooler. Unlike most cucumber beverages, this drink is packed full of flavor. It could easily be watered down and made to last all the way through dinner. Watch the ginger, though! There's plenty and it's SPICY! We will be returning on our next trip to the coast. The grace with which our server handled our table combined with the constant service and attention from support staff made this little basement treasure the highlight of our weekend. read more

While I was hesitant to try them (raw oysters are my favorite food), the grilled oysters with chimichurri were impressive. The service was okay. The atmosphere was good (small place; I'm going to assume you need a reservation for dinner). They're also open a little later than other places, so that's nice. Nice, open interior space. Can be a bit noisy. Gets busy, so I recommend you call ahead if you want to make sure you get a table. First time visiting and did so for lunch. Clam chowder was great and best I've had anywhere, Seattle, Portland, etc.. Dungeons Crab Toast was amazing and was the best of all the dishes. Crab was sweet, and all the ingredients complimented each other nicely. Only suggestion would be to put the avocado on the side to add as needed. Steamed Clams - clams were high quality, and broth was good, but not my favorite broth of all time. Maybe add a few other broth options. Cocktails - Were on point. At our table we had the #3 with a bulleit, Penicillin, and Glory Days and all were well made and had great flavor. Also, loved that all drinks came with a big cube, rather than small cubes. at first blush the menu puzzled me with his combination of high prices and spelling errors. The ceviche was loaded with sugar and capsaicin and lacked salt. The poke was less disappointing but certainly not good. The rest of the food items ranged from passable to good. I ordered one cocktail and food. The least pleasant part of the experience was the response to my very good natured attempt to be friendly with the bartender who gave me my food. To thank him for the food, I decided to joke "this looks great, do you think I deserve this?" The young man clearly acknowledged having heard what I said with his body language, and made it very clear that he was simply not going to be polite enough to respond. He later sneezed three times, and I gave him another chance at basic decency by saying gesundheit three times, to which a simple "thank you" could have gone a long way to mitigating the damage this young man caused to the atmosphere of the restaurant. But alas, no response. My desire to consume food and beverage in this place of course disappeared because dealing with this unpleasant person was part of the process of acquiring any consumables there. Luckily some regulars at the bar were very accommodating and invited me to sit and converse with them. When the rude server gave me my check, I said thank you and again there was no response. It must be noted here that I was absolutely not making any sort of attempt to invade upon this rude person in any way shape or form. There are clear rules of courtesy in America and this person was obviously aware of them. I finally commented to the regulars who had drawn me into conversation, that the server didn't seem very polite. 'Yeah, that's his thing' was the essence of their response. Those regulars are obviously more patient with a lack of courtesy then someone who's time in this town is much more limited and fleeting. This place is an aesthetically pleasing construction, and could make very good food with the ingredients it enjoys access to. Salt, however, needs to change its kitchen and at least one member of the wait staff. I must say that every other member of the wait staff I dealt with was normal to accommodating in her courtesy. I however, was sadly remanded to the business confines of someone who was not.
