My husband and I agree this is a solid 4 stars. Salt Rock Grille is a great new addition to the restaurants on 5th avenue. -The owner and servers treat you well. Julian was especially caring and really attentive. -The price is fair -The food is great We weren't too hungry, so we shared the special of the day which was Penne with salmon in a delicious creamy sauce with dill and capers. It also came with the house salad (we substituted for the Caesar salad). Every meal also comes with homemade bread with mango chutney and also a bruschetta with a special tomato salsa topping. All of this for only $150 pesos! Oh and did I mention that they have a great dessert selection too?! We were debating over the key lime pie or brownie. We chose the brownie and it did not disappoint. A fantastic addition to Playa's restaurant scene! My wife and I are annual visitors to PDC and tried Salt Rock Grille last night at the recommendation of friends. We were not disappointed. We started with calamari, which was excellent, and mussels, which were amazing....we agreed it was one of the best versions we'd ever had. The mussels were served in a delicious Thai style broth that had us sopping up every last drop with the grilled toast accompaniment. If you enjoy mussels this is a MUST try. Our entrees were also terrific. My wife and her friend had the skirt steak and I had the jerk chicken, which was as good (if not better) as any I've had in Jamaica. Great side dishes too. The new owners have revamped the entire menu, including drinks. The "Salt Rock-tini" is a take on the classic drink with tropical flavors and goes down easily....maybe a bit too easily! Bottom line: Salt Rock Grille is a great place for casual lunch or dinner (I see they've also added breakfast if you're staying near 5th Ave.) or to enjoy drinks while doing some people watching. As a bonus, it's away from the densest part of 5th Ave. and the atmosphere is much more relaxed. Highly recommended. read more

You should definitely try out Salt Rock if you are in Playa Del Carmen. My hubby and I stopped there on our first night out to eat and the owner was extremely nice and hung out with us. He gave us and another couple free shots! You also have to try his signature Salt Rock Martini! It's amazing. And on to the food...we thought this was going to be a hole in the wall spot but the food was outstanding. I absolutely LOVED the GROUPER! You should definitely try it there. read more

First time here will be last time. Overpriced Fifth avenue restaurant. Was most expensive in 3 weeks, least liked. Some positives, my moms green salad was tasty, calamari was good otherwise nothing special. Appetizer bread, not the greatest, seafood pasta served with out of the jar quality pasta sauce, Basic salad was can/am buffet quality, Sea bass was barely broiled with no flavour at all. Schnitzel was like liver my Dad said...but hey he broke the rule ..be careful getting schnitzel elsewhere from German eatery.Salsa was ok though. Staff was way understaffed and overworked missing out on details; no salad dressing, wrong beer, wrong pricing on bill etc Nothing special here. Should have went to the other recommended restaurants close to here like Chez Celine or Piola again. Kev read more

Wow, flavours of the food fantastic. Not the usual menu, great sauces accompanied the dishes, Shared the calamaries, enough for 2 people. My husband had the schinzel with a mustard sauce, yummy and I had the fish with a rum & banana sauce, incredible. We had a selection of deserts, all absolutely great. The sauvignon blanc was good. Very welcoming owners, don't miss a visit if you are in Playa del Carmen. We will be back for sure !! read more

Delicious food. Drinks: salt rocktini, sunshine strawberry dream, and mohitos. Apps: goat cheese salad, calamari and mussels embedded in the most delicious curry sauce. Entrees: fish taco (catch of the day. Ask them for the tacos...it isn't on the menu but trust me they have it!), seafood pasta, grouper ponzu. It was delicious. They had run out of bread(they make their own bread in house) but the owners realized we had the mussels and the sauce it came with and they whipped up some more bread for us. After dinner we were so full but decided to take a stab at dessert...the death by chocolate orgasm....wow....its a hot fudge brownie with ice cream...its was so moist and amazing....yep...dinner was great and the owners are def the nicest ppl ever. We wanted to take a break from Mexican food. Good idea, really bad execution! We read plenty of reviews, good reviews. Not sure how anyone could think highly of this place. We ordered appetizers - calamari (fine) and meatballs (dry and tough but good sauce). Entrees: Pasta Del Mare (best thing all night but still average at best), Mozzarella de Buffala (NOT Buffala, something was lost in translation), Skirt steak (tough, not flavorful, overdone) and the Portobello entree (came out 10 minutes after everyone had there entree, wasn't worthy of the wait!). Service was fine. Ambiance is nice - smallish place, mostly outdoor. There HAS TO BE better places to eat in PDC. Maybe? We'll try and find out! read more

Merp. So unhappy with my experience here. My parents had been here before when the restaurant was under other ownership and had loved it. While the current owners happened to be there when we were there upon our visit..the was they interacted with us was strange. The male owner made several comments to us, pointing out into the street to men holding hands saying "wow it must be gay week." This made me FUME. Who cares? I happen to have gay family members. Leave them alone. I wanted to scream I couldn't understand why this man who doesn't know us would think that's appropriate to joke about. The female owner seemed to be very intoxicated upon talking to us. So short staffed they were waiting tables too? Very confusing. They had one waiter working who was slow. We didn't have silverware when our appetizer came, didn't get drinks we asked for, drink orders weren't complete, main dishes were goos, calamari was meh. Underwhelming. Unimpressed and especially in Playa del Carmen where there are sooooo many places to go with better food and experience to offer. read more

Wonderful. Try the arrachera chimichurri. Great! The wait staff are friendly and attentive. The owner Louis is there overseeing the operation to ensure you have a great experience. There is a TV to watch sports if you don't want to sit in a bar. Prices are reasonable and quality is excellent. The brownie is THE BEST. read more

Came here because the place had good reviews. A lot of it seems to be because of how nice the owners are. The food here was underwhelming and overpriced. Ordered the arrechera which came with vegetables and mashed potatoes. Also ordered the jambalaya. The arrechera was good but the vegetables and mashed potatoes were comparable to the mashed potatoes and vegetables you get in TV dinners. The jambalaya seemed to be lacking any sort of spices and tasted very bland. read more

Located on north end of 5th Avenue. Catherine and Jose can't do enough to fill your order and make u feel comfortable. Daily specials are excellent and affordable. I have eaten at Salt Rock several times and always been happy with meal. Homemade bread with mango chutney is included with each order. Chocolate brownie is "out of the box" spectacular.
