Our friends from Edwardsville treated us to Sunday dinner at a well respected BBQ place in town. I thought the service was good, with the food being OK. Founded in 2014, Salt + Smoke now has six active locations across the St. Louis metro area, including this brand new one in Edwardsville (opened in May of this year). They have a large dining space, both inside and out. Since we had been outside for most of the day (and I wanted to avoid the mosquitos), we asked for inside seating. We were the only ones inside, but our server did a decent job of being attentive. We ordered a lb of fatty brisket ($24.99), dry rib full plate ($29.99) with White cheddar Cracker Mac and pit beans with smoked bacon. The appetizer was burnt end toasted ravs ($12.99). We shared a gooey butter cake ($8.99), which is a St Louis classic. The restaurant does mention that it's meats are smoked 'Texas-style', which is why I was really disappointed in their brisket. We even ordered it fatty (moist) and by the pound. It just tasted old, as if it had been made at a different site on a different day. The ribs were OK, a decent slab of meat The two sides were OK, with the white cheddar mac'n'cheese and baked beans (wouldn't really call them pit beans) providing some starch to counteract all the meat, but there just wasn't that much flavor. The plate did come with their famous bacon and cheddar popovers, which looked great...but was served barely warm and didn't really have much bacon flavor. I'm wondering if one has to come at the right times, when the meats have just come off the smoker. But as it was, much of the food was served at the wrong temperature, causing everything to taste a bit off.

The service was great. The inside is super freaking cute and I love the patio area! The food obviously always bomb - I love eating the pulled pork with the popover. I do think the crackers on the Mac are a bit odd but still the noodles and cheese are always cooked to perfection and I do enjoy the pulled pork made with the beans. I really enjoyed this visit.

Honestly, it breaks my heart to only give 3 Stars to, Salt + Smoke. When I lived in STL, I was a regular at their Hampton location and gave them 5 Stars. The E-ville location is still new, so I am sure they'll improve very soon. After all, they've only been open a month. Dining alone, I seated myself at the bar. I hate tying up a table for just me. I'll start out saying that the bartender was friendly and made a good Manhattan. Only complaint is that I ordered it up and it was served in a rocks glass. I know it's only a glass, but presentation is important. For my entree, I ordered the two meat Bestie Combo with Burnt Ends and Ribs. As my sides, I chose Pit Beans with Bacon and Creamed Corn. My sides were top notch, both were full of flavor. Pit Beans are always a must for me when eating BBQ and these did not disappoint. I like that they do theirs with bacon instead of chunks of brisket like many others. My disappointments came with the Cheddar Popover and my meats. The popover was way over baked and should not even have been put of a plate for serving. Ribs and Burnt Ends have always been my go to meats at S+S, but these missed the mark. The ribs on this visit were overly dry. They had a very crunchy outer coating. My Burnt Ends were more fat than meat. I typically clean my plate at S+S, but not this time. I'm giving them a couple of weeks to work kinks out and I'll return. The only reason I went ahead and wrote a 3 Star review, was to give them a heads up, so they know where they need to improve. Their other locations are so good, I know this one can be great, too.

Saoirse, was our waitress and she was amazing! The food was served hot and delicious! This was our first time dining at Salt and Smoke. We loved the food! Come and dine here and enjoy the flavors and the amazing menu and the service! You will enjoy!

Ribs 1/2 Rack, beans, mac-n-cheese and a roll on top!

Sat out on the patio which had a nice breeze! First time there and it was good food! The ribs were tender and the baked beans were the best I've tasted in a long time with chunks of pork in the. Mac-n-cheese was good! The roll they give you is different but delicious. We hit it on a Sunday and it was not crowded. The service was impeccable.

Good barbecue spot! Really pretty restaurant with great cocktails! We got the Eldest Son and an Old Fashioned. The place was pretty busy, and service seemed to move pretty quick. Great whiskey selection!

Waited 30 minutes when I noticed only two tables had food delivered since we sat down. I looked around and counted 18 tables that were sat before us patiently waiting for food. I then saw Doc walk out the door carrying a paper bag that appeared to contain food. Two possible managers going table to table blaming a new line cook for the delay. Here's the issue. Docs items are not cooked to order. Owners don't walk out when 80% of their patrons are experiencing extended waits on food, and one new employee should not be the excuse given at Doc's Smokehouse. Docs has great food, and amazing customer service. Hopefully what happened Friday night is not the new norm. Go try docs, but don't count on it being the service that you're used to getting.

We were greeted by a lovely young lady working the register who took our order and we sat down at our assigned table. We were quickly served our drinks and waited for our overly large order (we wanted to try lots of things). The ribs were delicious. Just enough smoke (this is not Texas BBQ) and so juicy. My husband's pulled pork was very good and thankfully did not come sauced already. The turkey very moist and tender and flavorful. Yum. The burnt ends were a little dry, but can be forgiven because it was near the end of the night. We were checked on frequently, drinks refilled. Then we had the opportunity to meet Susan, the owner. If you don't know Susan was a competition BBQ'r for many years before opening her restaurant with her husband and you can see all her trophies and ribbons in the room She graciously bought us some bread pudding and gave me a little secret about it! If you think this is anything other than spectacular there is something wrong with your pallet. We have eaten around the world in some very high end restaurants and that gave us as much satisfaction and joy as many a dessert. Delicious. My husband was trying to be good but sadly had to finish the lot Lovely experience, delicious BBQ. Not as smoky as Texas which is what we are more familiar with but we enjoyed it a lot. Hopefully we get to stop in again.

They did a great job and the portions were so large, I got two meals out of my Ribs and Brisket Combo Platter. Brisket was fork tender and the Ribs were fall off the bone tender. Both were good, but my fave was the Ribs. Edley's is an order at the counter establishment. Once you order, you're given a table marker number. When your food is ready, a runner will bring it to you. If you're a soda or tea drinker, you'll order them with your food. If you prefer an adult beverage, you order them separately at the bar. I aways sit at the bar any way, so it's easy to order a beer while waiting for my food. Edley's now has their very own, Hazy IPA made by Urban Chestnut Brewing Company. I gave it 4 out of 5 Stars on my Untappd. I liked that a local STL brewery was the one who made it for Edley's. My Combo Platter came with two sides and I chose, Baked Beans and Red Potato Salad. I have always said, if you're eating BBQ, you've got have a side of Baked Beans. Another of my crazy rules is, Potato Salad must be made with Red Potatoes. So when I saw that they advertised their potato salad with red potatoes, I knew I had to have it. The Baked Beans had chunks of brisket in it, which added extra flavor. Even though the potato salad was made with red ones, it needed more white pepper and some more seasonings to make it kick. In addition to the two sides, the platter came with a piece of Jalapeño Cornbread. I'm a jalapeño addict, so it was a winner for me. It was moist and had plenty of little pieces of jalapeños to give it the perfect kick. The young lady at the counter was very perky and made the ordering process easy and smooth. My bartender was friendly and hustled taking care of bar customers and guest who showed up at the take-out window. I arrived around 11:30 AM and soon after, the restaurant filled up inside and on the patio. I was surprised how busy the take-out window was. I guess some folks wanted an easy Memorial Day, too.

They told us it's counter service only, and to head to the opposite side of the dining room (where the exit is located, not the entrance). OK, annoying, but no big deal. I had looked at the menu ahead of time, and we chose this place in great part because they had fish. I knew I wanted the catfish (I'm pescatarian), but it turned out they were out. So we left. There was nothing else I could eat besides the French fries and maybe the slaw. The atmosphere felt nice, though, while we were there. That gets a star.

Even though I am thrilled to have one on the IL side of the river, it's a half hour drive to enjoy. The other day I was running errands and shopping in Edwardsville. I made it a point to do it around the lunch hour, so I could enjoy an calzone. I ordered at the counter as you do and lucky for me, the cashier was patient with me. As I ordered, I kept reading the menu and changed my mind two times and finally stayed with my third choice. Having a love of jalapeños, Pancho Villa was my final choice. Pancho Villa not only gave my fresh jalapeños, it was also filled with red peppers, smoked cheddar, Mozzarella and the meat was Chorizo prepared in Smoked Chili Oil. Yum-Yum and no heartburn. For dipping or spreading on top, I was given a cup of Queso. One nice thing about SOTS, is they offer adult beverages. They have an excellent selection of local craft beers and wines to pair with your calzone. I paired mine with, Pale Ale from Schlafly. The dining room is clean and crisp. It's done in an industrial style. They have regular tables and a few hightop tables, so you can choose which one is best for you. On the tables you'll find linen napkins with reusable flatware. If you can eat an entire calzone, I am impressed. For those of us who cannot, next to the soda machine is a stack of eco-friendly to-go boxes to put your leftovers in, to take home.

When I saw they had hot honey and pepperoni paired together on a 8" pizza, I instantly knew that was one of my choices. The fresh mozzarella and ricotta cheeses paired with the hot honey and pepperoni exploded with flavor. My only disappointment was the inner crust. The outer rim crust was very crispy, but the inner was soft and limp due to the excessive grease from the flavorful pepperoni. I guess that is something I just need to deal with for a tasty lunch pizza. My other choice was, the Apple Gorgonzola Salad. Wow. Double Wow! This has to be the best salad I have ever had. It was a delightful mix of, spinach, granny smith apple, gorgonzola, sun-dried cranberries, candied pecans, all topped with a delicious maple cider vinaigrette. I will be back for the large version and a glass of Pino Grigio as a dinner. As my usual, I sat at the bar. My adult beverage of choice, was a Peel Summer Lager. I may be going back to fill my growler, for the upcoming holiday weekend. The restaurant has a contemporary feel, but the acoustics make it a loud environment. I didn't mind the laughter and loud conversations, it was the yelling and crying toddlers that made me cringe. Service was friendly and attentive. I enjoyed watching the bartenders use their mixologist skills preparing all the cocktails. It pleased me to see they offer "hooks under the bar". That's a small detail that makes me smile.

The pizza was a really good combination of flavors but in my opinion they were too heavy handednoj the onion balsamic jam and honey glaze that tipped the pizza way too sweet and kind of buried the saltiness of the meat and cheese. It's one of a very few places in the area that isn't a chain, isn't just burgers and pizza, and also isn't pretentious or overpriced. The service is always friendly and knowledgeable. We've been there at least ten times and only once was the service slow. It was an anomaly because they're usually really on top of things. Ambiance is a friendly, but upscaled downtown cafe/bar place that is perfect for taking out-of-towners or a fun brunch with the ladies. (They have a separate brunch menu on Saturdays!) I don't drink, so I can't comment on their drink selections. I'm taking away a star because the parking situation is annoying, especially during construction. There is street parking or a huge parking lot in the back. However, the back parking lot is a terrible hodgepodge of concrete and asphalt and a gazillion potholes and no super clear direction on how to get to the restaurant. Some signage would go a long way in helping customers to not only find parking, but once parked, to them navigate back to the little crevice where the back door is located. The back porch is located behind a larger portion of the structure and you can't see it from the parking lot. Additionally, if you have anyone in your party with mobility issues, it's next-to-impossible to park near enough to the door to make a difference. The handicapped parking spots are 40 yards away from the back door. All that said, we will def go back because there's nothing else like it in the area.
