I'm not as picky as some other reviewers here, nor am I a writer. This place is a great neighborhood restaurant, and I live quite a few neighborhoods away. My husband and I feel fortunate that we actually live in the neighborhood and have such a wonderful neighborhood gem so close by. We've tried most of the items on the menu, and have never been disappointed. My favorite is the sea salt chicken, and my husband loves the steak. We also love to try the specials. This restaurant is hidden gem. We eat there at least twice a month, have our favorite dishes - staff is very friendly but professional. Weekly specials on menu is always a plus and chef will surprise you with something new and delicious. Great wine list with weekly specials makes dining more interesting as well. I was quite impressed with the breadth of Saltoro's menu. I ordered a charred octopus appetizer and Brussels sprouts salad. The charred octopus was memorable - just what I had hoped for - crispy blackened on the outside, a firm tender on the inside, with just the right give. You could tell care was taken in cooking it. The Brussels sprouts salad less so - a little underdone. My friend enjoyed the seafood linguine. We both had the flan, which we both enjoyed - a creamy custard with a light caramel sauce - and it was a wonderfully moderate portion. The ambiance is inviting but the evening lighting struck me as a bit harsh. Not a big deal unless that is something to which you're particularly sensitive. Overall - I think this is a great restaurant in the North Seattle/ South Shoreline area. read more

Truffle fries good....no happy hour bad....food is ok.....good for north end.

the truffle fries, as everyone else has said, are delicious. and for $8 the serving they give you is ginormeous. i've gone twice with two other people and we've never seen the bottom of the plate-- it could probably feed 4 people if all they wanted for dinner was to be stuffed with fries. price is about right for what you get & there's half sizes that are really just the right portion if you aren't starving or if you order an appetizer. fried risotto balls are something different and really good if you're not into truffle fries too. bar there is awesome and so are the drinks they come up with. it's a good place for a girls night out or a date-- glad i found it since it's kinda in the middle of nowhere. i'd give 5 stars if the service were a little better, but they tend to be pretty slow.. otherwise it's a favorite of mine if i'm looking for a nice dinner + quality time with whoever i'm eating with read more

This was recommended by a new friend from church that happens to also work at Saltoro. I arrived around 6:05 on very rainy and very windy Saturday night. The place was full already, bar, dining room and and side room. However, I had called ahead and reserved a table. The staff was very friendly and upbeat. As I sat down and perused the menu I was bit surprised in that the prices were 3-4 dollars higher tonight that what was posted here on Yelp. Okay. I quickly ordered a beverage and Sea Salt Roasted 1/2 Chicken with broccolini and garlic mashed potatoes started reading a new book on my Kindle. After like 30 minutes and lots pages I was really hungry. Suddenly, all the power and lights goes out in the restaurant and on the streets thanks to the ripping winds. After about 60 seconds lights back on to the applause of my fellow guests. I continue reading while inadvertently starring at guests entries with a growling stomach for another 30- 40 minutes. The waitress stops by with an apologetic smile explaining the kitchen never received or processed my order because of the blackout!. OMG, I am famished! I ask for an appetizer of fries and she gladly agreed. More waiting...I finally get the order around 8:05 with fries instead of 15 minutes earlier. I scarf it down like a vulture while occasionally noticing how tender, juicy and nicely salted the chicken tasted along with perfect garlic mashed potatoes and fresh fries. Unfortunately, the broccolini was undercooked and boring compared to the other elements.. I felt better but nonetheless spent, cold and underwhelmed because of the 2 hours waiting to eat. I secretly wished the waitress would have offered a desert as well. She didn't so I quickly paid the bill, tipped the waitress, thanked the hostess and scrambled back home to my man cave. Forces of nature dealt the hand and Saltoro at least addressed my pain. Overall, not a great experience. Another reviewer said it well: the restaurant is a little dated in decor and in unevenness of individual elements in terms of each complementing the other in sophistication and execution. I often thought of the term old school. I think management needs to have a entree consultant re-asses the paring of the different elements and instruct staff on service interruption recovery. read more

I really like this place - relaxed atmosphere, attentive helpful staff, great food, and good selection of wine and drinks. I've usually gone for seasonal specials, but have had the fries, lamb burger, and the other dishes that others recommended. One night, my girlfriend asked the server what her favorite dish was and she suggested the baked chicken. She was right! Try their house-spiced Manhattan if you want a very tasty, slightly off-beat cocktail. We came here on a Friday for our niece's 22nd birthday. Her friends planned it out since their family frequents this place often. They set up quite a display to surprise their friend; balloons, roses, and birthday hats. Even with this display, our server didn't once acknowledge her birthday. Now, as a server myself, I understand that the young adults at our table had a lot of energy and were excited to be out celebrating. This might have made it hard to grab everyone's attention when it was time to order, but read your table and SPEAK UP. Give them more time if they need it, or ask if you can help them through the options. God forbid you suggest a favorite! If it weren't for the food, we'd be giving this place zero stars. But, the food was fabulous. Definitely try the truffle fries and anything with seafood. The portions look kind of small for the price, but it was just the right amount. At the end of the meal we asked if the server could split our check and she responded to someone's question about splitting it with a little too much sass for our taste. Needless to say, we won't be returning. Oh! Someone in the kitchen told us Happy Birthday on the way out! That was a plus. The moral of the story is go here for great food, but the service this time around was a dud... the person who comes here often said the service is usually really good, though. Give it a shot if you feel up to having pricy, but delicious food. Hopefully you'll get service that's worth the price of admission. read more

Been here a few times with friends and once with the family. Food is always great, excellent even, and the cocktails & wine are extensive and diverse. The service is nice, friendly, and responseive, however my only gripe is that you should really have a kitchen size that can support the number of tables in the place. I've had very long (1 hr +) waits even when the place is only half full. If you're out for a full evening here this gives you an excuse to drink their excellent wines and cocktails, but if you've got a family or are trying to make a show after I hope you have better luck than I did. read more

Saltoro is one of our family's favorite places to spend a birthday or anniversary. The food's fantastic and the service is excellent. The food's good enough for the place to be a bit more pretentious than it is, but it has a real neighborhood feel underlying the posh bistro ambiance. My daughter and I went to this restaurant during my visit to Seattle. The staff was very nice but I can't say that about the food. I ordered the Pappardelle with Bolognese sauce that was extremely spicy. I had to scrape the sauce off my pasta so I could eat it. My daughter ordered the ravioli and found a large piece of paper towel in her food. The manager or head waitress told us 'oh yeah they use the paper towels to dry the ravioli'. So, that made it okay to serve it with your food! They offered us a desert to share for the inconvenience. They should have offered to take the cost of the ravioli off the bill. I would not recommend this restaurant. You never know exactly what you are eating. They should also let you know a meal is spicy. read more

Saltoro is one of my favorite neighborhood restaurants. The food is always good and the atmosphere is casual but with a touch of elegance. A little secret about Saltoro is that they have a selection of Grappa that would make an Italian homesick. You have to love Scotch to appreciate Grappa. Never would I have thought that Saltoro would dip down to a 2-star review. My wife and I used to absolutely love this place, but the food has had a steady decline for over a year now. Everything has been trimmed back: the steak frites don't have peppers anymore, the truffle fries have less flavor, the seafood lacks any punch, the portions are smaller, and even the drinks are smaller now. Why did they mess with what has been working for them for years? When our steak arrived quite underdone last night, that was the final curtain for Saltoro for us. We love Saltoro - its is our favorite neighborhood date night location. I've never had a bad meal, or even a so-so one. Some of our favorites: steak frites (great thin fries) and the dessert pot-de-creme. Saltoro has the ambience of a pricey restaurant at a very reasonable cost. It is a dark place and it can become quite loud when it is full. Their alchohol display is awesome. The wait staff is consistently friendly and professional. Best thing here is the truffle fries, the saltoro burger is close second. One of our favorite restaurants. I've never had anything bad here. The closest was a bib lettuce salad which was simply a bit pedestrian. Recently had the short-rib agnolotti, which was possibly the most delicious beef-flavored dish I've ever had. In terms of value, I'd say it's just slightly overpriced. I've certainly paid similar prices for far less interesting food. The truffle fries are a good starter: $9 for fries sounds like a lot, but they are *fantastic* and you get a standard dinner plate piled fairly high. Split it four ways and still everyone will feel like they got a good little foundation layer to prevent feeling any hunger after another item as an entrée They will ruin you for normal french fries. Cocktails and virgin drinks are very nice. Wines by the glass are again just maybe a dollar more than I'd like, but not egregious. The beer list is short but always has something I enjoy, and is closer to average bar pricing than the wines. I'm a big fan of iced tea and a bit of a snob about it; the iced tea here is acceptable but not incredible. Décor and lighting is nice. I could do without the TV over the bar, but it's not too intrusive. Lots of bare wood means it can be a bit loud if the diners are whooping it up, which is not usually a problem. My only real complaint with the place is that the flat wooden benches in the booths are not very comfortable to me, although my wife and daughter don't mind them. Try to get a table with chairs instead if you have a bony butt. read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Seattle. Every time I've been there the ambiance, food, service are consistently great! The first time, my friends took me there for my birthday, years ago. I had my first delicious lavender martini there. We had a cheese plate appetizer that was fantastic & we all ordered different entrees & then shared. After picking my son up from a late baseball practice on Saturday night my wife, son and myself headed to Salt Toro for dinner. The atmosphere in Salt Toro is very warm and the establishment has a great neighbor feel. The severs are very polite and let you choose any open table to dine at. They have a great menu and service is prompt. The menu has a great selection of dishes from steak, seafood, and pastas. Everything is moderately priced. I recommend Salt Toro as a great place to bring the family. read more

What a diamond in the rough! We checked it out having jokes about the Seafood/Landfood on their sign. We were kind of expecting a retro or divey place but found the atmosphere pleasant and the food surprisingly chic! My husband had the shrimp linguini and I had the Kobe steak. We shared the beet salad as a starter and the fallen chocolate cake (amazing!) It was such a surprise I felt like we should have been celebrating something.
