We were absolutely shocked that Saltus raised its prices to such a stratospheric level. I don't know who is in the kitchen, but a non chef driven restaurant should never command such prices. Our shock continued when the astronomically priced dishes didn't even provide an acceptable serving size. Three ONLY three diver scallops for $46. Mind blowingly ridiculous. Shame on you. The serving size used to be five, and cost a heck of a lot less. We paid $3 for bread service which contained three itty bitty pieces of baguette. It was like eating a crouton. My dish, should have been called a coconut soup with Mussel garnish. These bivalves are so incredibly inexpensive yet I only received eight or ten. All fell out of their shells during prep, so finding the small pieces was like looking for Waldo. My meal came with the same three baguette slices that we had for our bread service. We were embarrassed as we brought a dear friend who was visiting from Houston. The six "jumbo" shrimp cocktail for $18, was not worth it. If you put Jumbo as an adjective you better deliver. In Boston, the shrimp they served us here would only fall into the large category. They were tasty but slightly overcooked. Saltus should be embarrassed for not even being able to deliver a true and excellent rendition of this classic. SC shrimp is the best. They did not respect this crustacean in its description nor its preparation. Although my husband's blackened tuna had acceptable flavor, it was not a true blackened dish. Send your staff to New Orleans so that they can better understand how to execute a dish like this. The fish also had a strange deep burgundy tint that seemed out of place. It was highly unusual as we eat tuna quite often and have never seen such a hue. Our bill ended up being as much as a chef's tasting menu at a prominent restaurant. Our server was young, inexperienced and had no enthusiasm, warmth or personality. Sad to say, we will never return. read more

Then we sat at our table for over 20 minutes without a waiter ever approaching. We got up and left. We did tell the hostess why we were leaving before we left. I took my daughter and granddaughter to this restaurant last night for their birthdays. We were greeted by a very friendly hostess who seated us promptly. Our waitress was lovely, professional, friendly, and very efficient yet not obtrusive. We started with the Arancini, which was delicious. I had the New York strip, which was done perfectly medium, my daughter had the filet which was also done medium as well, and my granddaughter had the scallops which were exceptional. I had one and have not had scallops this perfectly done in years, anywhere. The butternut squash purée was delicious as were the bacon wrapped brussels sprouts. The cocktails were done just right and the wine was very good. We finished up with tiramisu which was out of this world. I will definitely make this a go to spot in Beaufort the next time I come back. The seating was very comfortable and we noticed they had a lovely bar area that was well stocked and professionally tended. My family and I came here for an early Sunday dinner and we had such a pleasant experience. Our waitress was extremely kind and helpful in selecting our dishes. The mussels were amazing and the real star of the show was the crab bisque! Everyone else had rave reviews about their items as well including the buttermilk chicken and shrimp pirlau. We all ordered a round of drinks and I wasn't particularly wow'ed enough to get a second but it was enjoyable. I'd recommend this place to anyone visiting the area, the location is perfectly placed at the waterfront and parking can easily be found on the street and nearby lots. read more

We tried the fried local shrimp to open - an offbeat appetizer that was amazingly fresh. The mashed potatoes somehow paired beautifully with the tuna as delightful comfort food. This restaurant is open daily while some restaurants in Beaufort are closed Sunday and Monday in particular. It was a little too cool to sit outside and there didn't seem to be service out there. We did go because we were looking for a place to walk to on a Monday evening. We just shared a few small plates and had 2 drinks each but it managed to be quite an expensive meal and while the food was good it didn't stand out to me as one of the finer meals. The chargrilled oysters with garlic butter were nom, the sushi roll was tasty (but maybe just a bit small for the price), and the blackened Mahi Carolina Set style was fabulous! SOglad we decided on Saltus River Grill for our anniversary dinner this year! We were staying in the state park campground for a few nights as part of our anniversary celebration and brought our own food for all our meals except for the evening of the 21st - the actual anniversary day of our wedding. After reading a bunch of reviews we decided on Saltus and I am so happy that we did. We opted to sit at the bar and the two bartenders were both very nice and helpful. Our pork belly appetizer (we shared everything) and crab cake were both outstanding and delicious. We shared a ribeye and to our pleasant surprise the kitchen split everything and our dinners came out on separate plates. Nice touch! It was costly but more than worth it. We will be back! Not gonna lie, I was disappointed. Beautiful setting and nicely appointed restauarant. The waiter was nice until he wasn't. I asked what the catch of the day was. Mahi, one of my favorites. But here's the real catch. It's just a piece of fish and by the time you pair it was sides, you are well over 70.00 for a plate of food. I ordered the Mahi and a beet salad. The mahi literally came all alone on a large plate. The two items cost upwards or over 60.00. Then my husband and i split a dessert. Blueberry cheesecake. I don't know what i would call it but it wouldn't call it cheesecake and the blueberry sauce seemed like it was out of can. My husband had sushi and said it was good. When the waiter came at the end of the meal to ask us how everything was, i told him that the fish needed to be accompanied with something, he said to me I told you, you could have ordered any sides you wanted and i replied. I didn't feel like spending 70.00 on my meal and he said that was my choice. Then i told him i didn't care for the cheesecake and coming from New York, it is not even close. His response "we don't call it New York Cheesecake." So perhaps I didn't order correctly but this is nonetheless my experience. read more

We took my elderly mom out for an early dinner SAltus . first the good things . 1. we were very pleased there was a side door that she could easily park near to let her out and come in without having to go up the stepswith her walker. 2. The food was delicious and the service excellent. But they were two things that really ruined all the above. 1. The overhead music was so loud we could not converse easily Which was even more difficult since my mom is hard of hearing 2.We asked the wait staff to turn the music down a bit and they currently did but it was still distract. i felt the choice of music station was inappropriate actually...and I am a fun middle-aged person. SAltus is a very upscale dining place and the music that we heard included "doin da butt", "jungle love" , "word-up" and others. If we had been at an outdoor rowdy party those songs would have been perfect but I didn't feel like they were the right listening music for the ambience of the restaurant. We loved SAltus and will likely go back but we did have a disappointing visit this time due to the music. read more
