We took my elderly mom out for an early dinner SAltus . first the good things . 1. we were very pleased there was a side door that she could easily park near to let her out and come in without having to go up the stepswith her walker. 2. The food was delicious and the service excellent. But they were two things that really ruined all the above. 1. The overhead music was so loud we could not converse easily Which was even more difficult since my mom is hard of hearing 2.We asked the wait staff to turn the music down a bit and they currently did but it was still distract. i felt the choice of music station was inappropriate actually...and I am a fun middle-aged person. SAltus is a very upscale dining place and the music that we heard included "doin da butt", "jungle love" , "word-up" and others. If we had been at an outdoor rowdy party those songs would have been perfect but I didn't feel like they were the right listening music for the ambience of the restaurant. We loved SAltus and will likely go back but we did have a disappointing visit this time due to the music. read more

Not gonna lie, I was disappointed. Beautiful setting and nicely appointed restauarant. The waiter was nice until he wasn't. I asked what the catch of the day was. Mahi, one of my favorites. But here's the real catch. It's just a piece of fish and by the time you pair it was sides, you are well over 70.00 for a plate of food. I ordered the Mahi and a beet salad. The mahi literally came all alone on a large plate. The two items cost upwards or over 60.00. Then my husband and i split a dessert. Blueberry cheesecake. I don't know what i would call it but it wouldn't call it cheesecake and the blueberry sauce seemed like it was out of can. My husband had sushi and said it was good. When the waiter came at the end of the meal to ask us how everything was, i told him that the fish needed to be accompanied with something, he said to me I told you, you could have ordered any sides you wanted and i replied. I didn't feel like spending 70.00 on my meal and he said that was my choice. Then i told him i didn't care for the cheesecake and coming from New York, it is not even close. His response "we don't call it New York Cheesecake." So perhaps I didn't order correctly but this is nonetheless my experience. read more

Started off with a great smile and explanation of Saltus, what they were out of (Oysters, Clams did not meet up to the chefs expectations) Char Grilled Oysters--So good that we had 2 orders of them! Truffle Fries, and a lobster tail as a second set of appetizers and a Caesar's salad. Dinner was Buttermilk Chicken ( Amazing) and the suggest Blackened Dorado ( not spicy at all) Then to top it off 2 deserts! Both amazing Cheese Cake and their version of bread pudding. In a nutshell: the food was amazing but our wait just to order food was 50 minutes--even though we were able to order drinks. Once we were able to put in the food order, bread came out in about 10 min and food in about 20. We gobbled it all down and then had to wait further for our check! We had a reservation for 8:45p and were seated immediately. The cocktail selection was on the smaller side but we all found wines we wanted. One of the glasses in the first round came out a very short pour. The waitress noted this and said it was because the bottle ran out; another bottle was being chilled and a second pour would come later. We should have tasted the wine before she left, though, because the bottle was clearly old and that glass should not have been served. We couldn't complain, though, because our waitress didn't return to take our order until nearly 10pm. We had no bread, no orders, no refills on drinks for about an hour. By the time she arrived to take our orders (and finally bring that other half-pour of fresher wine), I was hangry. Even though I had asked earlier about the fried lobster tails, I didn't order one because I was sulking and didn't want to give in to an up-sell. Once the bread came out, I regretted this decision because I really did want to try the fried lobster tail and I shouldn't have let a bad waitress get in the way of a good meal. Nevertheless, we ordered, bread came out and we all fell in love with the butter. It seemed to have some Provencal/Mediterranean mix of herbs. The next time the waitress passed by, I flagged her down and asked for more butter. There was enough bread for 8 people, but only enough butter in the single tiny ramekin for two!!! She stayed and chatted about the different herbs they've tried in the past and the consistency of the butter. We were still hungry and didn't care at all about what she was saying. Why was she still standing there and talking? We want to eat! Please, please, please find us more butter. She did, eventually, after our meals had made their way to the table. What? She disappeared on us? Shocking... The food was good. Like, so good. We had two types of scallops, the market fish (tile fish with octopus salad), crab cakes, dorado, and some kind of pasta that was actually forgettable. Except for the pasta and the side order of spinach I couldn't resist, everything else was fantastic. Small portions (we were starving...) but delish. Highlights were that the crab cake was almost entirely crab--no filler; the caramelized scallops had that nice crispy edge to it; and the market fish was so moist. The Brussels sprouts didn't have enough (any???) bacon and were slightly undercooked but once we realized there was vinegar at the bottom of the dish we were able to stir and inhale (again, starving...). As the second tiny ramekin of butter came out after our food, and as we were still so hungry from wolfing everything down, we re-attacked the bread and butter. If I wasn't so irritated, I would have been embarrassed that we were essentially licking the butter dish with the remaining bread when the waitress came to take it away, but we were all clearly still hungry. As noted above, no surprise, we had to specifically ask for the check and even though a card went down immediately, we had to wait even further for her to come and take that card and process it. It seemed like other servers were doing a fine job as other the tables around us had various things like drink refills or bread. I'd go back, but I'd make a fuss if I got our server again--or even sit at the bar if we'd had a smaller group. TLDR: great food, seemingly uniquely bad service! read more

This is a quite nice place which ordinarily would probably be worth 4 stars. We did not know that South Carolina allows restaurants to open without any form of COVID restrictions on diners. So I asked the greeter for a table which was 'appropriately' distanced from others. We were given a nice table and placed our order. Shortly after this, a party of four was seated, maskless, within 3 feet of our table. I asked for them to be moved. 'No' was the response, 'they're friends of the owner....but we can move you outside'. Obviously, I was somewhat upset by this as I had been given a table on the promise we could socially distance. The lack of safety concern is a government initiative and I understand that restaurants in SC are fully entitled to seat as many people in whatever environment as they are allowed. But we should have been told this when we arrived. So, we went to sit outside in the cold. For the record the service was ordinary, the food was excellent and the manager was not impressed with the way we were conned by the greeter. Indeed, the manager tried everything she could to make us happy, with the exception of offering us an isolated indoor table. The owner's friends are apparently above reproach. I reiterate the food was very good and the manager, though ultimately ineffective for us, tried hard to mollify us. We had a lousy night. read more

A great location in need of maintenance and freshening up. We have dined there twice recently indoors and the fly problem persists. From what we can tell the cause is quarter inch sized gaps in the windows letting the annoyances in. It's one thing to have flies visit while dining outside but inside it should be an irregular occurrence. Menu is good but not great and needs refreshing. The house old fashioned cocktail was undrinkable and we saw another table return theirs as well. Service is friendly. My advice to management would be to step back and focus on the customer experience. read more

My wife's birthday, we had our daughter and partner my wife and I. We all live in Beaufort and have dined here many times. We got our dinner and it was not what any of us ordered. He and I had steak , him a filet of beef and I a my strip steak my wife had sushi as did my daughter. We all that night got violently ill and up all night. As a visitor, we had a fantastic meal at Saltus. We started with the ahi tuna sushi and it was delicious. The hubby had the grouper ceviche and muscles (both appetizers) for his dinner. I had caramelized scallops and substituted the root vegetables for broccoli and goat cheese. It just so happened to be my birthday and my children (3 states away!) surprised me with a bottle of Prosecco and Saltus surprised me with crème brûlée! It was a pretty spectacular meal and if we ever make it back to Beaufort, we will definitely return to Saltus for another dinner. read more

I'm honestly so sad writing this review because I wanted so badly to love this place after seeing their menu and some raving reviews. However, first impressions consisted of the bartender running our card for someone else's $200 check after we ordered two glasses of wine while waiting on a table - big debacle fixing this. We then waited 90 minutes for a table, only to be sad and told that they are out of grouper, mahi, crab & crab cakes, sushi rice, eel, and a few other items. Basically that left us with their grilled oysters, shrimp & grits and truffle fries. ... let's just say the restaurant name is spot on "SALTus". Though the flavor on the shrimp & grits was delicious, it was so heavily salted it was challenging to enjoy. The oysters and fries were so salty we couldn't even eat them. I'm dehydrated thinking back on it all. Let's just hope it was a bad night in the kitchen and they can have a chance to redeem should a return visit arise. We have been to Saltus many times over the past 5 years. The food has gone downhill. We don't mind paying $45+ for great seafood and steaks and these are overpriced. We do enjoy the sushi. It is fresh and very good! Chad is a very attentive bartender. The restaurant needs updating! It is very dark and the light fixtures are dirty. As an upscale restaurant, there should be table clothes. The ladies room was unacceptable! The owners need to step it up! read more

This local used to love Saltus but it's gone down a lot in both quality of food and staff since the pandemic. The atmosphere on the water is wonderful and never disappoints. But between the long waits, poorly trained revolving door of new staff members, and plummeting food quality it's hard to support what used to be one of my favorite restaurants, especially with their increasingly higher prices. I will try them again after the summer season dies down and report back. read more

First time here in South Carolina & was expecting a wonderful meal with the southern hospitality everyone raves about here in the south. The service was absolutely AWFUL & we left terribly disappointed. We came down here from Massachusetts to get my mother out of her same everyday routine after losing our father (her husband) in September. For the first time in months we got ready, put makeup on and ventured out to Saltus. Please be mindful I have been in the serving industry for over 12 years - from serving, bartending, managing, marketing, etc. For starters our waitress took forever to greet us which I totally understand on a busy Saturday night but that's besides the point. We then ordered our drinks and appetizers - our appetizers came out cold. Again - completely understand that's not the waitresses' fault. We just let her know and she assured us fresh hot ones will be right out. Half hour later our waitress comes to the table and points at the truffle fries that have been rotting in front of us and goes are those the new ones? We told her no & that we have just been poking at them due to the fact they have been sitting in front of the five of us for thirty minutes now. When she went to grab the plates that were cold she spilled the untouched mussel juice all over the table and then looked at us and goes that was cold for you, the bowl burnt my hand....? I immediately looked at her and suggested she should try one so she could correct what she just rudely said. Our meal then came out before our appetizer which was four sushi rolls. These rolls came on one plate without one word being spoken - which roll was which? Any allergies? Nope, nothing. About twenty minutes later our appetizer was brought to the table with a nice snarky attitude and comment that we definitely didn't order - "I have food that wasn't hot enough for you guys." This comment stopped me dead in my tracks due to the fact this isn't my first rodeo with the service industry. Are your servers and management trained properly? She put the food on the table and quickly left without following up with her rude comment. The waitress didn't come back or check in on us once the food hit the table which also is ridiculous for fine dining. The woman who dropped off our appetizers and rude comment was then at the table next to us about twenty minutes later so we called her over again to ask her for the manager where we were absolutely shocked to find out she was one - to our surprise she was the assistant manager. I then asked her what she meant by her prior comment about our "food not being hot enough" and that let her know we felt disrespected and found it very rude. She smiled and said that the bowl "burnt her hand" when she picked it up from the table. This is wild because well.. the bowl of mussels was sitting on our table for about 40 minutes at that point. Anyways - after going back and forth with the "manager" she told us she would take the "cold appetizers" off and walked away. Our waitress again did not come back once until it was time for the bill to be dropped off. Our waitress dropped it off and said thank you, have a great night. Not ONE apology, not ONE person taking accountability for the absolutely awful service and cold food. On our way out we asked for the manager since the woman with the glasses claimed to be the assistant manager - nope apparently she's the general manager now. As we were walking out, the "general/assistant manager" was standing at the front desk with a big smile on her face. She looked at us and told us to have a great night very loud and proud. Shame on your team & management. I do not recommend this place to anyone who visits the area who is looking for a nice meal & great service. You're better off hitting the chick-fil-A that's not too far away. One star is far too much but was our only option. Bless your hearts. read more

The wife and I had a no kid weekend and decided to pop in here for dinner on a Saturday evening. We got there around 6, hostess said they were booked until after 930, even though only a little over half the restaurant was occupied while we were there (maybe COVID protocol?) Food was subpar for what you pay. We had the crab cakes and pork belly as apps. The crab cakes lacked flavor and were BURNT, not char grilled. Pork belly was decent. For our mains we had the shrimp and grits and fried chicken. Portions were small for both. The shrimp and grits had a weird consistency and I didn't even notice the bacon or the flavor. The fried chicken was again BURNT (atleast they're consistent). The mash and squash were nothing to rave about either. Overall, this place bills itself as a fine dining establishment but the only thing fine dining are the prices. Would not recommend. read more

Dorado was presented perfectly and tasted exceptional. The fried chicken with mashed potatoes was also another selection in our group and it did not disappoint.
