Cajun Shrimp Fried Rice with Vegetables
    Allison S.

We went to the Saltwater Crab for the first time on Friday night! It was packed with people which always is a great start for trying somewhere new! We were seated on the outdoor patio, right away our server came and took our order. We started with the edamame, which was traditional but inexpensive. The shaggy dog sushi was fantastic; I definitely would get this roll again. I heard great things about the cajun fried rice, but to me this dish didn't stray far from traditional fried rice flavor wise. My least favorite part of the whole experience was how loud the restaurant was. If you are looking more for a party scene or going out for drinks, this is your place! Next time I will be getting sushi to go!

They have a very extensive menu. I went with a large party of 20 and our server was great! All of the orders were perfectly presented. The food was tasty too. I ordered the gumbo (not much seafood in it but tasty), the Los Angeles sushi roll, and catfish bites, all delicious. My daughter also got the dumplings and #1 boil bag mild and literally demolished it. It is a huge place so there is plenty of space and parking is around. Only downside was that the party space was in a sunroom and it was cold.

We dined in again and had an event better time that the last. I absolutely couldnt wait to enjoy the CajunSeafood rice. I also ordered 2 spicy crafish rolls (which include a soup and salad) along with the fabulous 4 for $10 poinsettas. The rice was 10/10. Large portion size, seasoned well and perfectly cooked seafood. The poinsettas will get you right everytime. Brittany Z was an amazing hostess for our party. We enjoyed the back enclosed patio area which was warm and spacious for our group.

Customer service is great, I recall being greeted by almost every staff person I passed walking to my table which is rare. The environment felt familiar and inviting which is important! The food was super tasty and came out quickly, the Cajun seafood rice with veggies was flavorful, I would order again and sushi rolls, I had the 4 for $10 poinsettias and the bartender didn't miss!! The server for our table of 9 was patient and attentive even when the restaurant became busy. I can't wait to go back and try the seafood boils.

We were seated swiftly, and our server, Brittany, was nice! However, our food was just okay. We enjoyed the King sushi roll, which was fresh and tasty, but the Cajun chicken fried rice with veggies was not good. The rice tasted steamed and tasteless. To the rice, we added vegetables, Cajun garlic butter, and seafood sauce because we like spicy food, but that did not help. We began to feel unwell and requested an empty bag to take home in case we became ill on our way home. We made it home with no sickness! The place was pretty crowded, the vibe was chill, but the food needed help.

My husband wanted to try this restaurant because it had gotten good reviews for its Cajun fried rice. It was super busy when we got there so we were placed on a waiting list. No problem! There was a crawfish festival going on right outside its doors so I checked out some vendors while waiting. When our number was called I headed back to what was a literal zoo! It was so noisy that I couldn't converse with my husband. One customer (hyena) was talking and laughing so loudly from the back bar area that her voice carried to the front and startled me every time she opened her mouth. Just uncouth and inconsiderate. I had seen lots of people outside eating boiled crawfish that was pouring out of the styrofoam containers but my husband suggested I get it here. It was on the menu for $9/ 1/2lb and $15/lb but with a minimum pound order, and today bc they were competing with the festival, they upped the price to $20/lb. I had never had whole crawfish but it looked delicious from the outside vendors. I thought my husband was splitting the order with me but he ordered the Cajun fried rice and a grouper fish sandwich. He also ordered the soft shell crab appetizer. It was okay. It was 1 crab, maybe. I was so disappointed when my food arrived in a bag, especially then learning how to twist off the head of the crawfish and discovering there isn't much to them, so in essence it's a pound of useless head. I also thought the crawfish was bland and not worth the effort. Not the restaurant's fault that I didn't know better. My husband said the grouper upset his stomach and tasted like an oil sandwich. To make matters worse, we sat next to a table of 4 young people cursing and on a video call, 1 who made me hyper alert about my surroundings. I was just turned off by the environment and couldn't enjoy my food so I took the entire meal with us so my husband could eat it later. $80 bill for a meal we didn't enjoy and a loud and uncouth environment.

Gave this place a spin tonight & it was well worth it! Service with the staff was super good & very friendly. The staff is knowledgeable of what they like & answered all the questions of...what's the best or what do you like. Really liked the staff knew the product. The place was fun & had plenty of TVs to watch games at the bar. We had a few drinks along with oysters to start which were good. Ordered a Batman Roll & a Crunchy Crab Roll which was very good along with the Cajun Fried Rice with veggies. This is some of the freshest & outstanding fried rice dishes I have had in a while! If you are in the Overton Square area this is a must stop if you like the Asian Cajun Fusion thing that is going on here!

I ordered a ton of food. Every piece was delicious. The pushin P drink tastes like a pink starburst. Eat cocktail I've had in a long time. The seafood Fried Rice is to die for!!!! Edamame was seasoned with a crab boil mix or something. So tasty. Service was amazing, server was very attentive, kept us satisfied the entire time. Decor is simple and straight forward, no complaints over here. lol. Will come back forever

This is one of my favorite restaurants in the M. I love their shaggy dog roll, seafood fried rice, crab boils, and especially the grilled Atlantic salmon. Most things on the menu are good; you can't really go wrong here. The staff is always super friendly and hospitable. The ambiance reminds me of a traditional seafood restaurant.

Don't walk, run here! Literally one of my favorite places, especially for happy hour! The drinks are cheap & the food always hits, literally no matter what you get. Definitely a place you can come as you are, dress up or down. It doesn't matter. The vibe is always a fun time & the service is top tier! Tell em, Lauren sent you!

A prime location for a prime steakhouse. The service was strong as was the pacing. I found the server a bit too eager to explain the restaurant and the menu. I'm a ribeye eater so I had a pretty good idea I was getting a ribeye before I went in. I think the talking is used as a way to upsell and push guests towards opaquely priced off-menu "specials" which from my understanding are always on offer (such as their deviled eggs and bone marrow sauce). We started with the beef tartare and duck ravioli. I preferred the tartare, which had a nice spicy seasoning throughout. The duck ravioli had an excellent sauce on it, too. For our mains, I got the prime boneless ribeye ($68) and my brother got the prime strip ($56). We also shared the Yume A5 Wagyu experience ($225), letting us try three different cuts of Wagyu side by side. For sides (about $15/each), we did the fontina potatoes, truffle honey tots, and carrots. We also added the gulf prawns ($21), foie gras ($14), and bone marrow sauce (~$20) which was prepared table side and was plenty to share. It was very rich and peppery, though a bit of a salt bomb. For dessert, we shared the French toast bread pudding with maple butter ($14) which is one of my favorite bread puddings I've tried. They also brought my brother a dessert since it was his birthday, it was something like a raspberry mousse with coconut foam and a sharp raspberry sauce. Excellent. The Yume experience was a big motivation in coming here, as getting to try cuts of A5 Wagyu next to cuts of regular (albeit prime) beef is unique in the Memphis area and really for hours around. It was priced as an experience rather than a food item. It did not disappoint, nor did the prime steaks. The A5 is so unbelievably tender by comparison. My favorite was the ribeye, but I'm biased. My brother, normally a strip guy, agreed with me there. The potato sides were underwhelming, particularly for the price. I don't know how I let my brother talk me into buying him $15 tater tots for his birthday. I could get the carrots again, though. My total was $800 for the two of us for the above food, six cocktails, and tax and tip. A big chunk of that was the Yume experience as well as the drinks (we were celebrating!). If we were to go back, it would be closer to $350 for the two of us, and I would go for the prime ribeye with foie gras again, no need for Wagyu or sauce. I enjoy the sister restaurants in this restaurant group (Coastal Fish, Flight, Southern Social) and frankly I'd bet Porch is the cash cow of the group due to the relatively poor value proposition. We had a great experience exploring the finest steak and accompaniments one could wish for. But, for my money, Coastal does a pretty good steak too.

I feel like this place embodies the essence of my inner peace somehow. It was born as a overflow bar for Iris from the lore I hear. To me, as I see it, this place became Chef Kelly's escape to reality as far as food, atmosphere, and service are concerned. I think this place presents his personality in his relaxed more chill version. If you have ever been to Iris, specifically, when it was next door, you would understand what I mean. When it was the tiny place it had some kind of pretentiousness to it that just turned me off. I only ate there once. It would take weeks to get a reservation before he moved it and the constant limelight had to be a lot of pressure. This place though.... I could come here three times a week no issue. In fact, I actually wish that I could eat here three days a week. Second Line is moving soon. They are going back to being next door to Iris in the newer Laurelwood location. In some ways I wonder if Chef needs that jovial comfort of a place next to Iris to keep him grounded. I do hope the charm of this is somehow transferred, but looking out the windows into Cooper the last time I was here Dec '25, just will not be a possibility in that shopping center it's headed to. That will be lost. He's a great guy! Hell of a Chef! World class employer! Tremendous philanthropist! A leader in the City of Memphis! Please go support him in the new location. Now.... All that BS and I ain't said shit about the food and why I like this place so much. If you scroll through my photos you will see almost every dish that has ever been on the menu here. Some are fantastic! All are very good! I have had nothing but great food here for many years! I have only had one bad meal here. Catfish Picante and it is long gone it seems! I wrote a long ass draft I never published (thank god), after that visit. I do believe it was my first time here and I almost didn't return. What a waste that would have been. My favorites now are Sweet Heat Oysters, Chicken Livers with pepper jelly, that lobster knuckle sandwich from waaaay back, spinach Madeline, and of course... the Red Beans and Rice. The desserts are always killer as well. I guess I'll catch you at the new place soon! Love you guys!! '25 - Finale

As a child I grew up on fried fish filets and hush puppies until my grandfather had to retire and sell his restaurant due to his Health. He still cooks up a mess of catfish for us about two or three times a year when we visit. Yum! My standards for good catfish are extremely high. Good fried catfish is not greasy, light cornmeal batter, tender flaky inside, and slightly crispy on the outside. Sounds simple enough but the truth of the matter is... Good fried catfish takes skill. After an epic searched for any decent catfish in Memphis and surrounding areas that took a few years ... My family and I decided to give up. And when I heard about Soul Fish it took some considerable convincing to get them to go. We where, none of us, disappointed! Soul Fish is without a doubt the best Catfish in Memphis. It is perfectly fried... Hushpuppies are tasty, coleslaw edible if not always yummy, fried pickles crisp and tart, pickle green tomatoes so yummy I could swim in them, and vegetables always cooked and seasons well (special recognition to the cabbage, broccoli, and black eyed peas). The service is always friendly, fast, efficient, and correct. The blackened catfish is pretty tasty too ... Sometimes they get a little heavy handed on the seasoning. Deserts are pretty great as well. My sister loves the Mississippi mud chocolate thingy they have (I'm not a chocolate fan). I've introduced many people (about 40 or so) to Soul Fish - locals and visitors alike - and no one ... And I mean not a single one of them where disappointed. So why four stars instead of five? True... the catfish is the best in Memphis - however it is not the best I've ever had. And Sometimes a filet or two at Soul Fish fall short of perfection... However ... I'm a regular and a fan of Soul Fish Cafe. If you have spent hours and disappointed meals trying to find good catfish in Memphis ... Look no further ... This is the place for you. I promise you will not Be disappointed!

Inside, it feels like a slightly bougie fish cafe--clean, cozy, and well-kept, with subtle holiday decor and that warm Southern hospitality greeting you at the door. Our server, Denise, was professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely welcoming. The one-page menu keeps it simple, and she walked us through it along with the daily special. One of the highlights of the visit was an unexpected surprise from our waiter, who brought us a sample of their avocado ice cream. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was creamy, smooth, and surprisingly delicious. It was a thoughtful gesture that added to an already great dining experience. The only disappointment? They no longer offer the flight sampler. I was genuinely sad to see it gone because it was one of my favorite ways to experience several menu items in one visit. Overall, Babalu continues to deliver excellent food, attentive service, and outstanding drinks. Even with the flight no longer available, it's still one of my top recommendations in Memphis. 5/5 Stars - Consistent quality, excellent hospitality, and a place I'll gladly keep returning to.
