Took the ferry over for a day trip from Tortola because you always hear about JVD. A quick taxi from the ferry dock and I was on one of the most famous beaches in the BVI's. I walked up and down the beach to check it all out before getting in line to order a drink and food. You write your order on a piece of paper, pay, and grab a reserved table since you'll have food. My food was very good. The wrap was light and fresh and the fries were thin and crispy. This is a cool spot to check off your list but it's so crowded and so touristy. The gift shop is bigger than the actual bar area, which shows you how touristy this place is. It was packed with cruise ship people as well. Cool spot to do once but there are cooler and more local/remote spots in the BVI's. read more

It is similar to the Painkiller, but with a taste of dark cherry. Both were $8 -- a great deal these days! You place both food and drink orders at the bar. You will receive drinks right away, but you will receive a number for the food that you will display at your table for delivery when ready. We enjoyed the salmon burger, veggie burger, and lump crab cake BLT. (Maybe skip the lobster po bo -- those that tasted it were not impressed.) Sandwiches came with yummy fries sprinkled with a little spicy seasoning. The ambiance could not be better -- on pristine white sand, with tables and chairs under umbrellas very close to the water, with clean bathrooms. It's called the Soggy Dollar Bar because the only access to the island is by boat... and because there are no docks available to tie the boats up, you need to climb out of your boat and swim to shore! This was our third time back to the Soggy Dollar, and the first time in seven years. Our family has always loved the vibe there, and this time, just about everyone was old enough to enjoy their classic cocktails, including their amazing Painkillers. We got there via a private charter service that provides access to the BVI's from St. Thomas. The experience of jumping off the back of the boat and swimming to the beach is definitely one of the best parts of the experience. We also had a few in our party that preferred to dock at the Great Harbour after checking in with customs and taking a taxi over to Soggy Dollar. We didn't do any snorkeling here, as White Bay is a sandy area without as much aquatic life as other snorkeling spots like the Indians, the Caves, or the Baths. But it's a great spot to lounge around on the beach or in the water. The drinks are amazing, service was very nice, and their gift shop is one of the best around. They had a nice lunch menu, but we were just there for drinks and the atmosphere. If you plan to swim up to the bar, bringing a waterproof bag (for your wallets, phones, etc.) is always a good idea! Most of what we liked was gone. First not only was the drinks not made well, it was very cheap with the liquor. More so The service was not very good. Worst they had an attitude. I love Soggy! To try and explain why I love this place you need to close your eyes and picture this. Easily one of the best beaches I've ever been too. White sand, clear water, calm seas. This bar is known for the Painkiller, a staple in the Virgin Islands. I like Soggy's version, especially because they grind fresh nutmeg on top of each drink. My girlfriend and I went to soggy dollar on Friday and we both had a blast!! The painkillers are awesome considering this was the place that invented them! The only way to soggy dollar is by boat and you do have to swim to and from the shore. Hence the name of the bar. I recommend you put your money in a zip lock bag so it does not get "soggy". The beach and the water is drop dead gorgeous. So clear and warm. The soggy dollar does have a gift shop that sell great T-shirts and other stuff which is cool. Plus you can go on to their website to order shirts if you don't want to risk getting you items wet while you swim back to your boat. Most importantly, watch how much you drink. The painkillers are strong and you do have to swim or wade to get to the boat. If you are looking for for a romantic and serene bar... Soggy Dollar is not the place! It's a party place. The beach this bar is on is stunning. The drinks and service we received were not on par with the views or hype. I ordered one of the original painkillers expecting something fantastic. I love painkillers and have had many around the world. This is the birthplace, so they should knock my socks off, right? No so. My drink lacked any flavor ( coconut, pineapple..nope) and I couldn't taste any rum. There was plenty of nutmeg though. Disappointing..... I then tried to order some conch fitters, but was unable to flag down a server. I gave up after 15 min. Next was the gift shop...I really wanted a t shirt. They have a nice display with women's and mens shirts.. i picked out one I wanted and asked one of the workers there about getting one in my size.. No go .I was told they are out of all the women's t shirts and just have tank tops... What!?!. I then pick two shirts from the mens wall and ask for a med...Nope...they only have them in X large and up. I took one last shot picking a shirt and was able to get one in a size that i can wear. The place is legendary and definitely worth a visit for nostalgia sake. The set up is really nice and the beach is breathtaking. Just keep your expectations in check. read more

Unfortunately I watched on tv while the island was wiped out by a hurricane. My heart broke and I was determined to come back once they recovered. Fast forward to 2019. They rebuilt and are back stronger and bigger than before! This time I arrived on an excursion from a cruise ship. Getting to shore is how Soggy Dollar got its name. The bartender is a state sided who is rude and does not fit in with the tranquility, beauty, and friendly locals that inhabit the lovely quaint island. There is a spot next door that is newer and far better to visit to eat and drink. Though I spent upwards of $200 to enjoy a charter from the US Virgin Islands to the British Virgin Islands (BVI), the Soggy Dollar Bar (and the waters of Jost Van Dyke) were the only part I'd itch to return to were I in these parts again. Paying upwards of $200 to visit a bar might be (is) too rich for my blood but the charter simply didn't give me enough time here to shake the "I want to stay here all day" feeling. When I shared a photo of my visit here, a relative who sails remarked on how many times she's enjoyed the place and frankly, I was jealous. Unlike her, I don't have a boat and must rely on others to ferry me here. The Soggy Dollar Bar is so named as there's no pull-up docks to walk in from. Anchor your boat then jump off into that stunning, warm, blue water then belly up to the bar for the best drinks I had on either the US or British VI. They don't skimp on the alcohol here AND they know how to make a good drink (Margarita $7). Enjoy. Conch Fritters (6 for $10) are one of those things you must get here, even if conch (all conch) is rubbery. Here they're fried to perfection and served with dipping sauce and you can almost overlook the fact that what's at their base is very odd. Stomach filled, alcohol in hand, jump back in that water. I could loll there all day. This is a beautiful place, a fun place, a place that lodged itself into my memory. Now all I have is those memories, a handful of photos, and great merch (don't miss their store) bearing their highly amusing logo: "A sunny place for shady people". read more

So this place is definitely more touristy than other locations you'll run across while sailing in the BVI, but I give it 5 stars for being what it is, which is a nearly perfect beach bar/lounge/fun place for kids. The setting is so cool with perfect white sandy beaches, with sailboats anchored everywhere, hammocks between the palm trees and multiple bars and food stands for you to walk up to for service. It's got a lot for kids to do, with corn hole, connect four, jenga and the perfect calm beach all on hand. The food is good and not incredibly overpriced. The service was fantastic - Leon the bartender was cranking out drinks for hours both times I went and he somehow always managed to keep a pleasant and patient demeanor. We had the pain killers which I thought were great - they're not huge by any means but they also aren't very expensive. From what others are saying below, I guess it's changed from what it used to be, but it having a handful of kids on our boat, I thought it was wonderful in its current state. One suggestion for those boating with kids - we hit this toward the end of our trip and that worked out nicely. As mentioned above, it's more touristy than other places and has lots to entertain the kids which wasn't the case at many other locations, which is fine, but if you have kids and do this first, they may find the other places lacking. read more

Really great location. Beach has plenty of chairs in a good variety. There are a few separate bars to keep the lines down which is nice. Only downside was the amount of people, but even that wasn't terrible as everyone was in a wonderful mood. Will definitely be back. read more
