Wait, I didn't do a review for Salz yet? I swore I did! Let's do one anyway! If you want keys made right, come to Salz. Don't go anywhere else because other places are definitely hit or miss. I've been to a couple of City Mills, Ace Hardware, and...Wal-Mart (this was the worst). I've had keys that didn't work at all, keys that don't even go into the lock, and keys that work terribly. Is it really that complicated to cut keys? I guess they don't really hire professionals to cut keys at those bigger stores. Everyone is a professional at Salz. Salz is located along Waialae Ave, near the big intersection of Kapahulu, King, and Kapiolani, across from Goodyear, next to Mandalay. They have their own parking lot with specified parking spaces. It's a small shop, but filled with numerous key and lock related items such as key rings, lanyards, specialty NFL team keys, safes, combination locks, and etc. Prices start at $3.00 for single cut key copies. All the newer locks have the same style keys, so almost all the keys I need to make are $3.00 each. Double side keys start at $4.50, and there are many more services Salz offers. The staff that work there are very friendly, upbeat, and personable. Excellent customer service. I like how they use key rings to separate all the keys. Very helpful! And I can use the rings too! I lost the manual key to my Mini. Since I normally only carry my manual key instead of the whole fob/key assembly when I go to the beach I had to get the key replaced. Thus, I ordered an OEM key slug from mainland. I went to "CM", "HD" and "L" chain stores and they all said they didn't cut BMW/Mini and told me to go to Salz. Salz is a small shop but was busy. When other key cutting services told me to go here that was my first sign of quality workmanship and then the amount of customers coming in the shop told me I made the right choice. They cut the slug on site and it worked on first cut (those who have BMW/Mini know how finicky and precise the duplicate has to be). Anyway I side thing I noticed is they do safes too. Visited a few times for various services and I have always received great service with a friendly smile there. Getting a set of extra keys is something you don't want to have to go to a place more than one time for and Salz is always spot on with their copies. I've purchased door locks, standard Master Locks that have been rekeyed to match other locks, copied truck valet key, and most recently had my tailgate lock repaired there. I've known about this place for a while and have seen the stellar reviews but I don't go to Kaimuki that much but I should have..... Need a key duplicated, GO HERE. Want great service? GO HERE I was driving around trying to get a seemingly simple key duplicated. My mind even tried to convince me that the key was so simple that I could learn how to pick the lock! This is a simple key.... even I knew that. Despite going to several places, one of which had some kind of cool computer thing that would scan the key, no one said they could duplicate the key. Finally one of them said to go to Sears.... Sears???? NO WAY! I had enough problems with Sears with my cars. They would probably try to convince me to change the lock while examining my key. Back to Salz. I go there and there is lots of parking! So big plus! I go inside and there are keys.... I mean KEYS! Like lots of keys! I show the lady my key and ask if she can make a duplicate, she immediately says YES no problem. After all the other places, I was totally surprised! She said that the other places are not locksmiths, but Salz is and they have stuff other places don't have. Oh yeah! I asked how much and it was $3, so I got 3. What a relief. While inside, all I saw were nice people and a friendly vibe. THIS is the most awesome kind of place to patronize!!!! From now on, need a key, go to Salz. This is the place. Don't look anywhere else. Needed a new fob for a used car just purchased. The old fob still worked, but was beat-up and couldn't tell what each button was intended to do. And, the dealership was no help. So, took it to Salz, they order a new one (with the appropriate number from inside the fob) and it arrived within 10 days. Went down on a Saturday and they programmed and installed it. The new fob works great. These folks know their business and a no-nonsense approach. Very accommodating and friendly...probably offered me coffee at least twice while I waited. It's getting harder and harder to find a brick and mortar locksmith these days. Most appear to be mobile operations with a travel fee assessed to the work charge. That's fine if you need someone to come onsite, but not if you need a specialty duplicate key cut or want to buy commercial grade hardware for a DIY project. I've done both at Salz and always been pleased with the quality of their work and products offered. Be aware that Salz requires their store customers to wear a face mask. While I have a different opinion on the matter, I respect their policy. read more

For many years now, when I had to make duplicate keys my go-to place was City Mill. Last year I went to City Mill to make a spare key and although it was eventually made, there were some technical issues that took some time. To be frank, I didn't know what was going on but I just stood there and waited patiently. Late last year, I had to make a spare key for work and I was about to drive to City Mill in Kaimuki. But my colleague advised me to go to Salz Lock and Safe (SLS) instead because of their high quality work. As my colleague has been at the office for over 15 years, I took his advice and drove here instead. Located on the Mauka side of where Waialae Ave starts, just as Kapiolani Blvd ends, SLS is a small storefront that makes duplicate keys and sells all sorts of key accessories, and a selection of small safes. The also provide mobile locksmith services where they come to your home. For work I needed to make multiple spare keys so my colleague and I came to SLS on an afternoon. We were surprised there were a handful of people waiting in line as we arrived. As we stood in line we noticed more people came in and the line got longer. I guess the word is out of SLS's quality work. When it was our turn, I gave the staff several keys and requested one each. While waiting, I browsed around their rather small store checking out all sorts of key accessories. It was cool to have witnessed special themed keys for purchase, such as NFL and Hello Kitty. Looking to have car keys made as well? Look no further as SLS offers this service. Make your way here to have duplicate car keys made. This will result in savings if you instead went to the car dealership. When it was time to pay, the staff informed the prices and indeed they were higher than what I've been paying at City Mill. I needed a Lock set for a Metal cabinet that required a lock that I couldn't find anywhere else, I went to Salz and they of course had it and several different ones I was able to get one that was a perfect fit to the metal cabinet. They were helpful and quick when I described what i needed. I purchased a new doorknob and deadbolt for my entry door and wanted to get it rekeyed to match the key for my security door. Got there about 11:45 am and left there a little after noon. Service was quick and seamless! Employees there are extremely knowledgeable and provide great customer service! They are the last shop to provide either mobile or walk-in service. Called Salz after the mailman supervisor recommended them to replace a mailbox key on a condo. The key snapped off and got stuck in the lock so they had to take out the lock without opening the entire condo mailbox door. Appointment set up was very efficient and quick. Only took less than 30 minutes. Replaced lock and gave a set of new keys for a reasonable price for around $165. Great service, would recommend and use again! read more

We needed another key fob to replace a lost one. We called the dealership but wow! They were going to charge for the key and programming so it was going to cost over $300! We've used Salz before so we checked with them and it was way cheaper for everything. So easy! And they are super nice too. Programming takes about 30 minutes- no problem, we'll get a bite to eat at Mandalay red next door. Located on Waialae Ave on the right as you head towards the freeway, just past St Louis heights. Thank goodness for Salz. You don't know how many times I have needed (and used) Salz Lock and Safe for their locksmith skills. They're the BEST. No other locksmiths need apply. I've called on Salz multiple times for our clinic doors that needed new locks. I could also count on them when our break room had mysteriously locked us out (note to self: don't use push button locks on doors that will swing into appliances that may inadvertently "lock" the door from the inside). They were available that same day and unlocked the door within the hour. Most recently, I needed Salz to duplicate keys that other lock and hardware stores failed to do. You can't imagine the frustration of duplicating 20 keys after fighting traffic and parking, only to find that all 20 keys did NOT work. Then going back to the shop that miscut the keys, exchange for 20 more only to find they also don't work. Oi! With Salz, you don't need to do the frustration dance. They do it right, THE FIRST TIME. Location is not difficult if you have a few pointers to help you out. They are located at the beginning of Waialae Avenue across the street from Goodyear. Heading east, you'll see the signage after passing the storage place. If you see the Greek restaurant and City Mill, you've gone too far. Ellen had helped me make keys for a new bathroom set that required DO NOT DUPLICATE stamps on them. She was professional and took extra time to disinfect everything I touched in light of COVID-19-- countertops, pens, my own credit card. What service! Awesome local shop that specializes in locks and key duplications. I had to get a car key duplicated and was referred to them by next-door Premier Automotive. Went in shortly before they closed for the day and I was in and out in about 15 minutes...very quick and efficient service. Clearly the technicians are experienced (as you'll probably see on their website) and they are definitely better than places like Home Depot, Lowe's, and even City Mill when it comes to keys. The prices for their quick service is pretty reasonable. I would definitely come back to them the next time I do need any keys duplicated in the near future. read more

Can do most services locksmith can do. The only issue I have with them is that they need to organize their Will Call area. I turned in my claim ticket when I picked up and they couldn't find my order. Instead they started asking me what was the claim ticket for. I gave them the answers and they still pulled the wrong order because the claim ticket number did not match. After 10 minutes they finally found the order. Now I understand things can get lost however no one took responsibility for the company and no apology was given for the delay. It appears everyone there are individualistic and not team players. They took my $50 and sent me off my merry way. If you want bad service and be condescended upon by their workers then this is the place to go. read more

Walked in to get my mom's car key battery changed. I still have an old school key but new car key batteries I guess run out faster. They checked the battery strength using something on the wall. The gentleman said that they couldn't guarantee that it was a battery issue but that the strength was weak. He changed it right away within 5 min. Checked it on the wall thingy again and strength good. $20. And the key works. There are parking stalls marked for this business right in front. read more

Had to have my portable Blink portable safe opened (picked) because batteries were long dead and I was unable to find the backup keys. Tried this place for the first time and was very satisfied that they resolved my issues, which only took no more a few minutes. The cost was $50 ( excluding the sales tax). Not sure what the going rate is for this type of service, but that seemed a little expensive. I probably could have bought a new replacement one with a little more. But didn't really have the choice because I needed to see the contents. Good lesson learned: 1) do check on your batteries operated safe or other gadgets regularly and change the batteries at least annually or sooner, 2) remember where you keep the backup keys :-( Aforementioned tips will save you hard earned cash! read more

I used another locksmith that AAA sent me to to get my remote replaced. Needless to say, AAA wasted my time (more than 8 hours on a Sunday waiting then he couldn't do it and had to return the next day) and their money as the remote worked for a couple days and the locksmith never contacted me back. I kept seeing Salz' ads and finally decided to call them. SO HAPPY I did!! They answered the phone right away, was extremely helpful in locating the correct remote, and very pleasant!! They held the remote for me and I went there immediately.
