Sammy's Trattoria is always a mixed experience. The pasta is homemade and the appetizers are always amazing. It's easy to make and get a reservation and you're always seated quickly. Sadly, the service is always incredibly slow. It took over 30 minutes for the appetizers to arrive and an additional 35 minutes for the entrees to arrive. The pasta ratio to sauce was too much, as the dish could've used more pasta considering the size of the meatballs and the amount of sauce. Positively, the meatballs were amazing. You can expect a busy, loud environment with a true Italian flare. Their cocktail list is extensive and their dessert always looks delicious. Unfortunately, it has always been too late to order but I'm confident I will be able to try the dessert soon. read more

Been here a few times, and it's a nice little restaurant! This past visit was just for drinks, we had a delicious espresso martini (3 beans!) and a bottle of wine. The bartender really fit our vibe that night and joked around with us perfectly. Previously we've been for pizza and apps at the bar. I hate leaving a review this bad but the service was so exceptionally awful I feel I must. Setting the stage: we're a party of 6 with a 7:15 reservation on a Saturday night. We're celebrating my wife's birthday with our adult children and their partners. We were seated promptly in a glassed in patio heated by a gas space heater. We all wore our winter jackets the whole night. We didn't see a server for 15 minutes. In that time we watched another table of 6 get up and leave. They only had water and they said to us good luck with the service. We were approached 3 times by a kid from the kitchen delivering food that wasn't for us. We watched him walk from table to table asking if they ordered what he was holding. A few minutes later the waitress arrived. She was pleasant and didn't seem stressed. She took our drink order and we also ordered 3 appetizers. 30 minutes passed. Nothing except kitchen kid with another order for someone else. Server never came by. No water. Nothing. I went and found the manager waiting table in the bar. Expressed my frustration. She apologized. We then had bread and water delivered. 10 minutes later our drinks arrived. Another 10 minutes and appetizers finally hit the table. In that time another table got up and left. This could have become a drinking game if we thought we could get refills. At 8:45 our food finally arrived... 2 plates at a time with 5 minutes in between trips. No joke. It was delivered by the kitchen kid. Our server stopped by twice while we were waiting for the rest of our dinners, but she personally never went to get the rest of the food. We ordered garlic bread an hour earlier and it finally arrived after we finished eating. We decided not to order dessert so the birthday celebration never happened. The manager sent over 2 free cannolis with the check but it was much too little much too late. At least we got a memorable story of the worst birthday service we've ever had. read more

The food here is good , the atmosphere is good, the servers work their butts off and are great . What makes me give it a 3/5 is 2 things . The first is the host when you enter . The older man . I don't know if he is an owner or what , but he has NO business doing that job . 1st time we went and approached the desk , he asked if we had a reservation, when I said "no" he literally got an evil amused grin and scoffed at me like I was funny asking for a table without a reservation. We left . I still wanted to try it and we had reservations the next time for 7:30 . When you go in the entrance is crowded with people .. you think they are in line to check in , but it's just he doesn't make eye contact with anyone or ask if they need help . He waits to be approached. So I make my way to the stand asking who is in line and doing his job for him . Get to the stand , and he still doesn't look up and acknowledge me . (This has happened several times now ) he just keeps wiping off menus like he doesn't want to be bothered . So I finally loudly say "excuse me.." and he walks away comes back a good while later with someone's carry out order - I finally get his attention, and say we are there for our 7:30 reservations, and he looks at me dismissively and says "well we are running about a 1/2 behind , so go wait over there and we'll call you when WE are ready " and dismissively flips his hand like to shoo me away. He has zero customer service skills or kindness . Not even an apology for being a 1/2 behind . Do reservations even matter ?? He is also slow a molasses . He needs to be replaced . The second reason I give it a 5 is there is SO much wasted space between the kitchen and bar that could all be seating . It could be a whole extra dining room . Then they could seat people quicker . There is no where to sit when inevitably waiting a 1/2 hour for your reservation. No one needs to see the kitchen - there should be a wall where the poles are making it a hallway to kitchen window for the servers - then a long bench could go along the front side of it to make seating for a waiting area . Bar should be knocked back a little creating a large amount of seating in the huge dead space . I still begrudgingly go occasionally because they do have good Italian food , and the servers are great .. but I dread having to deal with the host each time . read more

Went on a Saturday night and service was awful. Granted it was busy, but they should be better prepared. Took 15 min for waitress to take drink order. Didn't place dinner order for 30 min and took 45 min to get our food. The food is good but one of our friends asked to speak with the manager. She was very polite and wanted to express her dissatisfaction regarding the service. The manager was extremely rude to her and walked away. No apology, no accountability. Not acceptable! read more

Would give zero stars if I could. They will accept a takeout order and tell you 15 minutes, BUT fail to tell you that they had a huge catering order and then the staff and manager get pissy when you are not happy that your 15 minute order takes more than 40 minutes. I went here with family on a weekend afternoon, needless to say, I will not be returning. The server was a little snippy with us when we asked her for help. We had to ask for refills on our drinks. We got the lasagna for lunch which was very forgettable. Although the cheese and pasta were okay, the tomato basil with bolognese tasted more like pizza sauce (not good pizza sauce either) and there was a random undercooked onion on the top of the lasagna. We also had ordered two salads which never came out (so, who knows how they might have tasted). The ambiance was definitely lacking ... the tv monitors had screensavers on them the entire time we were there, instead of any number of sporting events going on. read more

Terrific Italian food, and very welcoming staff. Salads are fabulous and fresh. We have been several times, and really enjoy the lively vibe and friendly service. My fiancé and I eat here often. The fried calamari appetizer is always a pleaser. It comes out fresh and hot, lightly breaded, with a delicious dipping sauce. The Chicken Francese is probably our favorite dish. We get it with steamed broccoli, but if you're a garlic fan then just let them bring their house broccoli. It's great too. Other dishes we have enjoyed are Judge K's Veal, and the Breschi's Halibut. We frequently sit at the bar and the bar staff is wonderful. The outside covered seating is quite nice. The dining room can sometimes be a bit noisy so if you're looking for a quiet, intimate, venue this is probably not your choice. Overall we have been very pleased with Sammy's despite some of the negative reviews here. read more

This was my first visit to Sammie's and it did not disappoint. We were visiting my son, daughter-law and grandkids. My son said that we would enjoy the food and he was correct. I enjoyed the eggplant parmigiana while my wife had lasagna. The portions were enough that we enjoy a second meal the next day. The service was outstanding. We had a very engaging waitress with a terrific personality. The ambiance was inviting. All in all we have a great meal and won't hesitate to come back. read more

The food was cold and the service was not good. We were a group of 7 for dinner Sunday night. We started off with some Calamari and 2 people split a salad. The Calamari was good but not a very large portion for the $12 charged. The salads were large portions and enough to split or eat as an entree. The bread was fresh and warm. Some of the food that was ordered came out cold and wasn't very tasty. I ordered the Petro's Veal Involtini. It didn't have much flavor and it was luke warm. My wife ordered the Salmon and it had so much garlic (We both love garlic but this was excessive) that it was overwhelming the rest of the flavor and it wasn't very hot either. The other meals that were ordered by others were just OK. Everyone in our party said they will not come back again. I hope that management reads these reviews and does something to improve or they will be the next restaurant to go out of business. Our server was very nice but he was overwhelmed. He didn't remember multiple things we asked him for. I can't blame him because he was so overwhelmed by having too many tables. We will NOT be returning. read more

Let me start with, the original location on North Charles Street in Baltimore, MD is the better place to go, and should not be associated with their new second location in Hunt Valley. It is as if they are two completely separate entities. My mother has dined at the Baltimore location for at least a DECADE with her friends and has been satisfied every time! The fact that the Hunt Valley location is subpar surprised all of us last night when we dined there. To begin, to enter the establishment was very optimistic - the ambiance and greeting was inviting. My mother, husband, two children and I happily sat, ready to enjoy what was supposed to be a memorable experience. However, as we sat down our first impression was how one of the two tables, and chairs slid around uncontrollably [an indication of possible subpar cleaning at night]. Initially, the server was delightful, doing her best as it seemed like she was busy and overextended. She took our drink order and delivered appropriately, but unfortunately, that was the beginning of the end. Our server took our appetizer and entree order, and unfortunately, as the appetizer came out [Calamari Fritte, which was actually tasty], two of our entrees came out with it at the same time! We also ordered a Julia House Salad for my son, but it had not arrived yet. We told the food runner to send our entrees back and for our server to come. When our server returned she was extremely apologetic and specifically said she would have the kitchen remake our food from scratch. She then personally brought the Julia House Salad [Also very enjoyable - the dressing was good!] While that seemed ideal and hopeful, the kitchen did not deliver AT ALL. We received our two Judge Sweeney's Pappardelle alla Bolognese entrees that were previously delivered with our appetizer, however it was clear the kitchen just microwaved it or sat it under the heating lamp for the 10-15 minutes. Usually, the Bolognese dish [when prepared at the North Charles location] has al dente noodles with a thick generous and flavorful sauce. However, at the Hunt Valley location, not only was it tepid, it was mushy, and filled with more pasta than sauce. It actually looked like a plate of leftovers where the pasta has soaked in the sauce as there wasn't any. The other three entrees, the Kelly's Penne alla Vodka, Pasta con Polpette and the Eggplant Parmigiana were satisfactory, except also tepid -- which led us to believe the kitchen also just let these dishes sit under the heat lamp or microwaved it. Consequently, we felt obliged to just take home half of each of the meals, and ended up finishing our bottle of wine, paying the check and leaving. Our server was tipped well, but that was because that experience was not her fault; because as I said before, the kitchen did NOT deliver. She was lovely, energetic, clearly apologetic, but also unaware of the ball dropping. A new restaurant is only as good as the chef, sous chef and their ability to deliver quality, hot, and consistently good tasting food to each and every table who sit to enjoy a meal and have a memorable dining experience. While Sammy's Trattoria on North Charles is for the most part a solid 4 Star restaurant, their new spot in Hunt Valley is not comparable at all. Unless they step up their game and get it together, this location will suffer. read more

My wife and I celebrated our anniversary here last evening and the experience could not have been better. From our greeting by the host, Steve, to our server, Paulie, the service was prompt and cordial. The meals were authentic Italian, and the Brunello was excellent. My husband and I had frequented Sammy's downtown for a number of years. As an Italian American, I thought Sammy's was much better than most of the restaurants in the Little Italy area of Baltimore. Because of the pandemic we have not been eating out much but decided to visit Sammy's on Tuesday, April 19th to enjoy Italian cooking in Hunt Valley. Upon entering, the noise and volume of conversation was over whelming. We could barely hear the hostess who seated us or each other as we sat at the table. They were hosting a group of 26 people in the main dining room which was too small to hold both this group and other patrons in the same room. I ordered ravioli, which in the past tasted home made with a light pasta dough and small squares of stuffed pasta. These large squares of pasta arrived at the table. The dough was thick and chewy and obviously commercially produced at a restaurant supply house. How disappointing!!! This pasta was immediately filling and heavy. I must say the sauce and filling was tasty and the wait staff was lovely if you could hear them. I am so sorry to see that Sammy's has become just another Italian restaurant, without any pride in the making of each dish as though it was made in an Italian home. That was the kind of food and service we experienced in the past on North Charles Street. I will try to return to the downtown location in hopes of finding the authentic cooking they were known for.
