The wife and I are finishing up an overnight trip and we searched online for a good place for breakfast this morning. We found Sam's Coffee Shop. First things first: seat yourself wherever you like. That's the rule. On to the location, atmosphere and food. Nothing about this strip mall stands out and all the stores in it have yellow-lettered signs on dark, wooden signs but once you find it, you will be glad you did. This place clearly hasn't been updated since the 70's. Once we found it, we walked into Sam's and waited near the front door. The inside looks like any random diner in a small town with old tables, carpet and decor. Lucky for us, the place was empty on this morning except for about 4 or 5 tables. These people were clearly locals. We stood at the front for about 5 seconds until one of the servers noticed us from across the room, smiled and let us know to choose any table we'd like and someone would be right over. They weren't kidding. Our server was there with menus, a pot of coffee and two cups, a smile and good service within 30 seconds. The coffee, amazingly, tasted as good as anything you're going to brew at home with your Mr. Coffee. I was satisfied. The server left and gave us a bit to figure out what we'd like. When we were done, she was back immediately, took our orders (2 french toast meals) and the kitchen got right on them. The wait for the food wasn't long, 5-7 minutes. In the meantime, our server offered to freshen up my coffee. I had only taken a few sips out of it so I declined but was enthused by the attentiveness and level of service. When the food got there, french toast was at the perfect butter-melting temperature, sprinkled just right with powdered sugar. The butter was off to the side in one of those small paper condiment dishes and whipped just the way I like it. The scrambled eggs were nice and fluffy and the sausage was cooked just right: hot but edible, browned but not too dark. About halfway through breakfast, our server came back to top off my coffee again. This time I accepted since I was halfway down the mug and it was the best I've ever tasted in a diner. In the end, we've decided we're coming back to Half Moon Bay soon. There are a few big reasons but this place is definitely one of them. read more

Sam's is known by the locals of Half Moon Bay as being the casual place to go to meet friends, have a cup of coffee, read the newspaper, and joke with the friendly staff. Well... I orders the sam#2 it was very good, lots of spinach and avocado! But they had to ruin it by putting in processed cheese? You know the Kraft single in the plastic wrap? Heading out on a weekday to do some kayaking. Sat at the counter, staff was very friendly. Had a nice omelette with hash browns and some tasty fresh coffee. Some of the reviews seem to be confused what this place is. I am actually very tempted to not give this place a review, as it is so good I don't want to share it. As a local, I try to come here at least once every two weeks. I love the banana waffle with whipped cream and butter (HUGE waffle but very light and crispy) and the bacon, cheese and avocado omelette (packed with avocado just the way I like it). The corned beef hash is also very tasty. Their coffee is amazing! The only coffee I will order in a restaurant, it's always fresh and never burnt tasting, and they're good about refilling (I'm talking 4-5 refills with a smile). Speaking of smiles, they always give fantastic service. You get your food quick, they're wonderful about special requests, and they're always pleasant and sincere. This quaint coffee shop is how I wish all of Half Moon Bay was - friendly, clean, simple, and authentic. read more

I guess I should have known better than to order a salad at a coffee house. Since when is a chef salad a plate of iceberg lettuce with cold cuts and cheese slices cut into squares (not cubes)? It was really disappointing for the price ($10). My husband had a hamburger and it was somewhat bizarre. Nowhere in the description did it say it came with sauteed green peppers! Very strange. we came here because we were in town and read good reviews about this place. we came in around 10:30 sunday morning for breakfast the place wasn't busy or packed and the inside was not appealing. their was flies all over the place and all over the food. the problem was the waitress she was extremely rude and when asked questions about the menu didn't know what to say about the food, we asked what she recommended from the menu and she said "i dont know i dont eat here", we asked if we could switch the pancakes to french toast and she said no you cant. then she went to the back and was extremely loud talking bad about us when the whole dining room could hear her. im a culinary student and i am well aware of what good service should consist of and if youre a waitress you should know the menu. also, when we requested extra toast that we never got which came with our meal she rudely said that they couldn't do that and that she was going on her break. the service was terrible and the food was mediocre, my english muffin on the bottom of my eggs benedict was burnt. the hash browns were not crispy and were mushy. we got a so call 8oz apple juice cup which was considered a large! we were charged almost 4$ for a tiny apple juice considered a large ! the waitress never came by to check if we needed a refill or how the food was or anything. she was very rude and seemed very bothered when we asked for something. we will definitely not come back here. read more

One thing about living in the Half Moon Bay area is that all restaurants cater to tourists which brings a lot of excellent dining but also extravagant prices. I haven't found a restaurant that does not overcharge until I found Sam's Coffee Shop. It is a wonderful breakfast joint that you can tell gets a lot of locals. The food is delicious with good sized portions and both of my kids finish all of the food on their plates every time we go which should grant some sort of award in itself! Even when it seems crowded on a weekend morning, we usually only have to wait a few minutes before being seated unlike many other restaurants in the area that have 1hr+ waits. read more

I was really hungry After my workout but didn't want to pay an arm and a leg to eat so I stopped here. I had a spinach, mushroom, onions, beef, pepper jack cheese scramble with avocado, a pancake and a bowl of oatmeal with a fried egg on top. The portions were big and food was flavorful. I got a lot of avocado on my scramble which I loved and they gave me a huge bowl of oatmeal with an egg on top just how I ordered. The pancake was somewhat tough to cut through but I did wait to eat it after my scramble. I came in at 11:45 and it wasn't busy at all. Food was brought out quickly. I will be back. The best part it was just under $20!!!! Im sure I would have paid that much for half of what I got somewhere else. read more

This is the best hole in the wall place you'll find anywhere. It's almost out of a 1950's movie as far as atmosphere goes. The food is always good. Breakfast omelets are awesome and burgers are great. Would highly recommend. The only reason I didn't give them a 5 star is the service is hit or miss. The Latino staff seems to favor other Latinos and ignore the rest of us. Other than that this is a must do place in hmb. read more
