The good part first: super quick service. However, quality is not there, even for the relatively low price. We got some fish and chips and calamari rings. $10 for a box of rubbery calamari rings with no taste. $7 for one small piece of fish with french fries, which is a reasonable enough price except that the fish had no taste and the fries were only ok. So if you're looking for some cheap fast food, there are better alternatives (I'd have preferred a big mac for the same price). If you're looking for some good fish and chips, don't go there. read more

I visited the Chowdermobile today with some coworkers and it was pretty good. I had the lobster roll and I split a calamari and chowder with my friends and it was a good overall experience. The lobster roll was a good size and came on a buttery toasted roll and was filled with mostly lobster meat from the claws and legs. This means a slightly more chewy and less sweet flavor then the body but was still pretty good. The flavor of the dressing was lighter and complimented the lobster pretty well. As a whole I'd give it a 4 given that it costs $15 dollars and I'm not sure if I'd make the trouble to go back. The calamari was good, but nothing crazy. It was fried well with a light batter and was lighter in flavor. The chowder was good but nothing outstanding as well. This place is good if you want a more adventurous lobster mobile meal but be prepared to spend at least 20 big ones on lunch. It was also a little hard to find. I might or might not come again. I was strolling in the park one day. Golden Gate Park. Yes, Saturday in the Park ... I think it was the Third of July. Waiting for friends to join me for a visit to the Academy. I was thinking about lunch and walking and lo! There it was. An unprepossessing catering wagon like so many that set out to trap the tourists. I strolled over, expecting junk food or hot dogs or some such. WRONG! I was a little put off by the prices, especially given the low expectation I had for food off a wagon. WRONG! I had the lobster roll and the Old Bay fries. (It was the words "Old Bay" that convinced me to try these guys.). JACKPOT! The roll was lightly toasted. The lobster (some claw meat, even!) sauteed in butter and herbs. The fries were done to a turn and dusted with just enough Old Bay to complement the seafood with out going (wait for it...) overboard. Tried the Lobster roll and fries at their Lobsterfest today, not sure if it is the same as they usually make/sell, but I'm pretty happy with what I had today. For $15 per roll, they did give a lot of lobster (I guess more than I expected), it's a little dry and could be softer, but it's not bad. The bread is quite tasty, though it's a bit too oily for me, seems like they blended a lot of butter into it. I like the fries. I finally made my way to Golden Gate Park one weekend to try this food truck out. I've been hearing so much about it from my coworkers. On a somewhat rainy morning (more like drizzle and it felt like spit in my face), we ordered the clam chowder, calamari, and a shortie lobster roll. The clam chowder was okay, but the lobster roll was delicious. I got a ton of lobster in my shortie! Hardy har har. The calamari was plentiful too and delicious. Tried this when it came around to Redwood City. Yes, the chowder mobile is a bit pricey comparing to normal truck food...but I like this better than the normal Sam's Chowder House -- when I was there, I feel like it was too crowded and the service wasn't good enough.. Well, there you go, all the good food without any concerns for service because it's a truck. The guy was very nice, and it's great that the truck takes almost all kinds of credit cards. Foodwise, I still think their clam chowder is not as good as the place down in Monterey Bay (the name escapes me now), and certainly not like Boston's! It is a bit too watered down, with too much potato..however there was quite a bit of clam :) The lobster roll comes with a lot of lobster, but not extremely flavourful...at least the bread they serve it in is awesome. I think that $15 for a lobster roll is a bit pricey for lunch, but then again, lobster aint cheap! For $20 I got a Lobster Roll and Clam Chowder. The Lobster Roll was tasty, but overall it was just alright for me. It was packed with succulent lobster sautéed in garlic and butter and some other stuff in between buttery toasted bread, but in the end I think it was a little too buttery for me. The Clam Chowder is a different story. The Chowder isn't as thick and creamy as most other clam chowder I've eaten, but it had a nice balance of flavors and filled with clams and potatoes in every bite. YUM! I'm mixed about this place. I just don't think $15 for an item on a lunch truck is worth it even for lobster. I think I will take my buddy's recommendation and try the actual restaurant at Half Moon Bay and maybe I'll have a better experience. If the Sam's Chowdermobile comes to your area make sure you come early because after I got my food, they ran out of Lobster Roll and Chowder and there were tons of unhappy looking people who were still waiting in line! read more

I had the Manhattan Clam Chowder today and a bite of their pulled pork sandwiches.. their chowder was quite delicious and did not taste like it came from a truck! It was piping hot, full of vegetables and clams.. I loved it! The reason why I did not eat the pulled pork sandwich yet is because I'm trying to learn how to portion control! What's great about this establishment is that this truck accepts Visa/MC!!! They have a wide variety of items normally offered near the wharf/pier.. lobster roll, calamari, fish and chips... since I do not eat seafood other than the chowder itself and I did not want to get full/fat of the "Bay Fries" so I held back but if I could, I would have ordered an order of fries w/ that. My friend got a lobster roll from Sam's Chowdermobile about a month ago and posted a picture onto his facebook. I have been wanting to try it ever since. It looked fantastic. Tonight was the night. They were in Santa Clara...my husband and I went to go find it, and we were not disappointed. He got a regular sized lobster roll and I got a shortied. We also shared fries and a cup of clam chowder. Everything was tasty and delicious. The service was fast, and the food was fresh. At first glance you might think that the prices are a bit high for a food truck, but for the amount of lobster we got, you would have to pay at least $30 in a restuarant for what was stuffed into our sandwiches. The rolls that held the lobsters were also fantastic. They were warm and a bit crunchy. Definitely worth the hunt. read more

Sam's Chowdermobile was at the Lobsterfest this past weekend. We waited 30 minutes in line to get 3 lobster rolls, 1 clam chowder, 1 calamari, 1 fries. I was talking about this place the entire week before arriving. I have been soooo excited to eat their food, shuck some oysters, and do an oyster eating contest! My friends and I were standing in line starving and drooling over the buttery aroma as the breeze passed it down wind. First we got our hands on the clam chowder. To my disappointment, it was really watery, had tons of potatoes, and not much clam meat. If I were to return, I'd pass on the chowder. Then we got the rest of the order and brought it to a haystack to chow down. The lobster roll was 15 tickets ($15 dollars) for buttery lobstery goodness! It was soo good I felt my arteries clogging right away. lol. The bun was perfectly toasted and buttered. The filling was lightly seasoned and was able to taste the lobster. The lobster filling had lots of whole claw and knuckle pieces. The calamari was fine. It was not over or under fried. The batter was fine... but I prefer less batter. Caught the truck in time before the dinner line began, yay!. As I was walking towards the chowdermobile, my stomach was ready to eat a lobster roll just from the smell! I asked to see the difference between the shortie and regular roll- it didn't seem to be much difference, which was disappointing, so I opted for the $11 shortie over the $16.50 regular. Either the worker was too lazy to show me the real difference or it really was only two inches more and not worth the extra few bucks. All I could think about was how pricey this is...but I suppose it is lobster and they actually gave a pretty generous amount of it. I bit into this roll and it was so tasty! FAVORITE FOOD TRUCK. So these trucks have been around on FB & Twitter for a little over a year now, in the Bay Area at least, and I'm definitely done with being super excited about them. Hunting them down was a fun adventure at first, but I've had my fair share of mediocre food and it's just not worth it anymore. NONE of that applies to Chowdermobile. Trucks are popping up left and right, and sure their food may sound cool, but the Chowdermobile is not only a super cute bright red truck, it serves food that IS DELICIOUS. The restaurant itself is so popular, I'm lucky that Chowdermobile shimmys its way around the bay for me to have more opportunities to eat that AMAZING LOBSTER ROLL (shortie size bc I can't afford the full size). The first time I went looking for them in downtown San Jose, I almost didn't go but after bringing back my steaming hot butter bath of a sandwich + cool mouthwatering cream soda, I absolutely knocked out for a good few hours and that was one of the best afternoon naps ever. I don't remember any dreams from that nap but I'm sure I was only dreaming of more delicious chunks of lobster bc that thing was PACKED. On my following visits, I had their yummy calamari which tastes super fresh and crispy (none of that rubber fish feel) and their chowder (which somehow tastes better from the restaurant). After seeing almost 200 reviews, I aimed at trying their lobster roll when the truck came to South Bay. In short, the lobster roll is simple but loaded with lobster meat. The ingredients is buttered grilled bread, lots of lobster claw meat and bits of celery. Simple and with the buttery help, taste good. To avoid lines, be there when the truck arrives. Sam's Chowdermobile visits Sunnyvale every month so I get to treat myself to the lobster roll. I am not a fan of the clam chowder. There are clams and potatoes in the chowder but the flavor of the broth was quite bland. Some people like the po-boy sandwich. I personally thought the sandwich was dry and not very enjoyable. Just had Sam's Chowdermobile for the second time and it was just as good as I remembered. Nom nom! So glad they come by my work every so often now. Their lobster roll is as good as everyone says it is. The bread is soft, toasted and buttered. This time, they were very generous with the lobster too. I heard they have the "shorties", which is the cheaper, smaller version of the regular lobster roll, but I don't think they offer it all the time. The clam chowder is money - well, they add bacon into it, so it HAS to be good, right? If you order clam chowder, it'll be quick because it's pre-made already. Had my first lobster roll a couple years ago in Golden Gate Park, and since then have occasionally chased down their truck on the Peninsula or South Bay. I've tried their shrimp po' boy - pretty good - but the lobster roll is the stuff. Heaping portions of tender lobster meat on a heavily-buttered roll - absolutely delicious. Why not 5 stars? Because the price is steeper than it should be (lobster meat wholesale has dropped recently but their prices haven't reflected this change) and because the roll that you get at the restaurant is actually better than from the truck. In a part of my new quest to explore the wonderful world of food trucks, I stumbled across this particular one when I was on Yelp. Since they were closeby at Nimble Storage, I decided to grab lunch there. Usually when I try a place for the first time, I like to try a little bit of their specialties, allowing me to get a good overall view of this place. I got the shortie roll, clam chowder, and the fries. I really didn't care much for the fries, as they were just your typical homemade fries, which is now a norm in this area, with seasoning. However, the shortie roll and clam chowder were delicious. This place is probably not one where I would eat everyday, since the shortie roll had a lot of butter, the clam chowder has cream, and the fires... are fries... but it's definitely a good place for a one-in-a-while treat. Now as for why I deducted a star... The total price came out to about $18. The fries were $4, which is a little crazy, considering, as I said, that they were just typical fries with some seasoning. Even if you don't get the fries, the price is still $14 if you are getting just the shortie roll and clam chowder. For that price, I expected a little more food or at least a more filling meal. Yes, I understand seafood is expensive but still, if it's over $10 for lunch, which to me is a sandwich and a side, then it has to be, at the very least, filling. It's a beautiful, sunny 80 degrees out right now, but that didn't stop the crowd gathering in front of Sam's ChowderMobile! It's never too hot for chowder! :) I have to confess, it's my 2nd time time visiting this truck this week :3 ... The first was at a mini food truck meet up, my friend & I were just DYING to try the chowder since we saw it one day downtown but were unable to purchase some because it was for a private event (wah, we were willing to pay!). IT WAS DELICIOUS. Served piping hot, I felt like we got a good portion for $5.50. The cup looks measly at first, but it is a hearty soup, filled with generous chunks of clams & potatoes. It was flavorful, and really hit the spot! Today my co-worker and I went halvsies on a lobster roll & shrimp po' boy sandwhich because my wallet was protesting the $16.50 price tag.. there was quite the line in front because it was right in front of Cisco, I'd say the line is the longest wait, because our food came out quickly! I thought it was cash only, but they do accept credit cards! :) Wish I knew that before I made a run to the ATM.. So... I'm not sure if I'm gonna get in trouble for this, but I thought the lobster roll was just........... okay. Don't get me wrong, it was loaded with lobster! Heard about them on Yelp and decided to give it a try when they were recently in Mountain View. Invited a few of my coworkers and went over at 11:30. Since it was a cold day and about to rain, there were only about 10 people in line so we were excited that the wait wasn't long. I ordered their famous clam chowder ($5) and lobster roll ($15). I have to say that the clam chowder was AMAZING!! 5 STARS!! It was hearty and full of clams unlike most clam chowders, which has more potatoes. As for the lobster roll, compared to the Old Port Lobster Shack, the bread wasn't that great so I didn't eat it all, but I liked that the lobster meat wasn't salty. The lobster was just mixed with chopped celery and no other seasoning so it may be boring for some, but it was fine for me. Next time, I think I'll go with their "Shortie" Lobster (smaller version) or try the Shrimp Po'Boy. 4 stars for the lobster roll and 5 stars for the chowder! I was looking for a seafood place near Half Moon Bay and found this well-rated restaurant. First of all, the ambience is great. Not super casual, not super formal. They have patio seating which is what I recommend, it's quite refreshing and amazing. I had the New England Clam Chowder. It was good but not the best I've had. I prefer a more creamy and thick texture and this wasn't like that, but it was tasty! For mains I ordered the Half Moon Bay Petrale Sole, which was super creamy with mushrooms. The fish was indeed very fresh, apparently they get it daily so it's supposed to be fresh! I strongly recommend their fish. Upon the recommendation of the server I also tried the key lime pie which is something they make fresh everyday too, and it was quite delicious as well! I normally don't like new England clam chowder but not in this case. I devoured that soup. Their crab ball appetizer was really good as well but oh so tiny and oh so expensive. Is a tiny golfball size of crab worth around $13? Still pondering that one. I'm wondering if I got the lobster roll at the restaurant if it might have been better than the food truck. I had Sam's cater my grandmother's 100th birthday party picnic at Memorial Park in Cupertino. I ordered the lobster bake for 80 people. Planning was very easy. I filled out the online catering request form. I was then contacted immediately by someone at Sam's. The pre-set menu for the clambake was great. In addition to a whole lobster per person, it includes clam chowder, mussels, clams, red potatoes, corn, sausage, cole slaw, bread and watermelon. They also have other options and add-ons that we didn't use. We supplemented our picnic with chips, cookies and birthday cake. We also got our own hot dogs and grilled them for the kids. The lobster bake is not cheap (it is lobster after all), but they come to your location of choice, they set up the table and help serve the lobster and clam chowder, and they clean up after themselves. You just sit back and relax. My family is very hard to please when it comes to food, and they were extremely happy with the food and services. You will need to choose a site that can accommodate the lobster bake as they will need a large space for cooking the food. It is about 5X5 square box that has charcoal at the bottom, covered with seaweed and the food. The workers were worried that some smoke and ash may affect our picnic area, but it was a nice day with little wind so we were not bothered by any smoke or ash (when they put out the coals). I recommended ordering more than the expected number of people so that everyone will have their fill of lobster. We had lots of leftovers that we ate for dinner. They will provide you with some take home boxes, but I suggest you have larger containers for leftovers. I highly recommend Sam's lobster bake for your next event. read more

I assembled a caravan of coworkers and head to Palo Alto. Clam Chowder ($5): chunky, meaty, great...but $5 for THAT size? Shortie ($10): lots of lobster in a buttery roll. Lobster, yum. Roll, a wee bit too buttery imo. I inspected my coworker's shortie and noticed she had larger, juicier chunks of lobster. I look at mine and thought what the heck? it's minced to bits. The nice thing was that they give you the chowder up front so you can enjoy it while you wait for your sandwich to be wrapped up. Now, I consider myself a chowder snob after living in New England for a Summer, and I'm happy to say that Sam's hit it right on the money. The chowder wasn't too soupy or too thick and the ingredients are top notch. The potatoes were soft, there was plenty of meat in the soup. Onto the lobster roll. They spare no expense with the roll. The bun is lathered with butter and toasted and totally overfilled with lobster meat. It was sight to behold and devour! A key thing to mention is that the Chowdermobile does accept credit, which is god-send considering my lunch cost me $20 (chowder, regular sized lobster roll, and a soda). So yeah it does hurt the wallet, but man it was worth it. I can't wait to make the drive out to the actual restaurant and see what other awesome things they have to eat! read more
