I've been to Sam's just once. My recent visit makes two. We arrived early for our reservation and were immediately seated. The prices are a bit high, but the seafood is FRESH and worth the price. We had a waitress that was on duty for her first day and she rocked it! We ordered the Captains Platter, Crab Ball, Oysters, Lobster roll, and the shrimp linguine. We were told that we ordered too much so we had to wait a bit, but the view of the ocean melted the anticipation. This place is a gem, a must visit. I'm a local and saw many tourists which I loved. I got to try this while being in Domenicos winery. They were promoting 5$ calamari, chowder and fish taco night. Yup 5$ for any of those. I tried the short lobster roll. 10$! Wow, that's pricey It was full of lobster (at that price it better be) specially baked bread which seems to have the smell of a french toast (Buttered Im sure), some chives, a little lobster juice and there you go. WARNING: Do not eat Sam's Chowdermobile on a first date or in front of someone you are trying to impress! It WILL get messy! I heard that Sam's Chowdermobile was in town, so I made sure to stop by. When I first turned into Mazada's dealership, I was so shocked with how fancy the Chowdermobile looked! I was seriously expecting another flimsy tin-can catering truck, but the Chowdermobile looked like a big bad firetruck! OooO-la-laaa! The lobster roll was a buttery roll stuffed with a whole lot of lobster meat. It was delicious and tasted fresh, but my favorite would have to be the shrimp po'boy! It was basically a sandwich with lettuce, tomatoes, and tons of fried shrimp! The shrimp had a thin layer of batter and it was fried to perfection--it was juicy inside and crispy outside! Eating the sandwich was definitely a challenge, as the shrimp kept falling out of it. It was pretty hard keeping my hands clean too, so I just said forget it and ate like a cave woman! Alright it's pretty rockin that I can get a solid Lobster Roll and a a loaded little neck Clam Chowder out of a truck. As much as it's crazy to see the "street food" phase hitting the bay area, it's provided for a lot of interesting lunch time bites. Since this is seafood, both of those will set you back around $20, but I think it's totally worth it every once in a while. Besides Old Port Lobster Shack and Woodhouse Fish Co, which are neither close to where I work or live, this is a welcome monthly addition to the south bay. The lobster roll, it looks small for $15 but they do not skimp on lobster chunks. The crisp and buttery of the bread is on point with the lobster once you take a bite. If I did not practice self control, I would have ordered another one! The bf ordered the pulled pork sandwich, which was..meh. I could tell by the disappointed look on his face, but he ate it anyway. My two favorites came back with a boatload of containers from Sam's Chowdermobile, the bright red exterior a stand-out in the circle of trucks. We tried: -- fish & chips: they loved the old bay seasoning on the fries. I loved the mild, meaty white fish & crisp batter (although beer battered would've been better.) Tarter sauce was very tasty; not too tangy. -- lobster roll: butter white bread, huge portion of crab meat & claws, but crab itself was not sufficiently buttered. -- clam chowder: I think I said this is my Sam's Chowderhouse review--I like that it isn't too thick & creamy. Strong dill taste. The clams that accidentally ended up in my mouth weren't too chewy. -- shrimp po'boy: 90% of shrimp were not de-veined. Yuck! Horrible experience at the truck parked outside (9/18/13) 2100 Powell Street Emeryville. First off, they made 40+ people in line wait while they decided to open up 20 minutes late. Their open time was supposed to be 11:30 they waited until 11:50 to take orders. Fine, the food is Ok so we all waited. The Kicker is they made us wait for 20+ minutes only to put up a sign saying their POS was down so they could only take cash. Couldn't they have informed the many people in the line so we wouldn't waste our lunch hour and still have no food to show for it? The guy opening the door on the truck to start taking orders yelled to the people in line. "You guys really that hungry?" Yes you tool we are, shut up and take my money. This is a crock, this isn't the first time there are issues with this specific truck. Multiple card machine issues, they are late most every time they come to this address. I am going to take my money elsewhere, if I wanted to wait 20 extra minutes for bar food I would have ordered in a bar. I can't speak for the lobster roll that people seem to like, I can't see why anyone would pay ~$17 bucks for a sandwich from a food truck but whatever. DAMN. I decided since I was craving food and wanted to go to the free museum day at the Cal Academy of Sciences, I would grab a lobster roll first. Such a great idea. The lobster roll was delicious. It was filled to the brim with lobster and so worth the $16.50 I paid. Definitely a great truck to stop at in Golden Gate park. My friend and I tracked down Sam's Chowdermobile to the Japanese Tea Garden over the weekend. This Sam gives his stamp of approval to the Chowdermobile. The New England and Manhattan style chowder had a generous amounts of clams, potatoes, celery and bacon. I give extra points because the celery was still green and fresh instead of it being cooked down to mush. Actually, I thought the bacon wasn't that necessary in the chowder. I'd prefer that Sam's New England style chowder be a little more creamier. Their chowder is more on the broth side, which is ok. But I do like a creamy chowder! The chowder was good enough to whet my appetite for some more food, so I went back to order some calamari. For $7, Sam provides a generous portion of calamari, which was deep fried perfectly! The batter was thin, yet crunchy. I was in calamari heaven, then to calamari overload! Luckily, my buddy was there to bail me out! read more

My co-workers and I always look forward to the days this awesome food truck is in South City for lunch. We plan our work to make sure that we can be there right when it opens at 11:30am so we can beat the crowds. I highly recommend anything that's offered (I think I've been able to taste almost everything on the menu). The lobster rolls ($15 for regular or $10 for shortie) are hands down the best I've ever had. I've been to Sam's Chowder House in Half Moon Bay, and I fell in love with their lobster roll. Amazingly, their truck version is just as good as what I ate in the restaurant. It's simply delicious. A toasted bun lathered with butter stuffed with tons of lobster meat. There's no gross mayo or random fillers. Just a little bit of celery which adds a little crunch and goes perfectly with the lobster. Honestly, I'm smiling just thinking about it. Other goodies include the fish and chips (yummy, huge portions), the shrimp po'boy (big pile of lightly fried shrimp on a brioche bun), and the fish/shrimp tacos. We've stalked this truck three times and we'll continue to come back as long as they keep stopping near our office!!! read more

The Clam Chowder from the chowdermobile is on par with their restaurant quality, which is not bad but far from the best. The Lobster Roll is definitely more interesting. Pretty good bread loaded with buttery lobster meat. Delicious. I still prefer Lobster Shack in RWC but Sam's Chowdermobile is a good alternative. read more

DISCLAIMER: I'm from the midwest. I've been to Sam's Chowder House and The Chowdermobile. The lobster roll (hot) is cheaper and tastes the same if not better at the mobile. I think the lobster roll is the only thing worth getting at either place. And it is AH-MAZ-ING, so juicy and flavorful, best freakin' lobster roll I've ever had. After living in Portland, I'm sold to the idea that food trucks are quick and cheap places to get food. With that said, the lobster roll was by far the most expensive item I have ever ordered from a food truck. At 16.50, you basically get two pieces of six inch bread smeared with mayo on both sides, and filled with pure lobster meat and a bit of seasoning. The lobster meat was alright - it tasted like boiled lobster, but I felt like it lacked flavor and freshness. This is also a meal that won't be sustainable every day with my budget. I do commend this food truck for driving all the way over to Santa Clara! Thanks to Yelp, I found Sam's Chowdermobile in my random searching. After reading the reviews, I knew I had to try it out. I waited patiently for the weekend to roll around and Saturday morning I was up and out of bed by 10:30am (which NEVER happens for me). I got ready and the bf and pooch were on our way! Sam's Chowdermobile is right outside the Japense Tea Gardens and was easy to spot. I mean, come on, how could you miss a big red truck? haha...We got the clam chowder and the lobster roll to share. Clam chowder was not thick as I have had many places before and I guess you could descirbe it as "thinner" in comparison. However, the taste was AWESOME! Granted I can't eat clams (allergic) I dogded all the giant clam pieces and slurped up as much as I could. I thought it was delicious! The lobster roll is huge and the pieces of lobster are large and plentiful. I like how they added celery for a crunch. It was very buttery and yummy. Usually those type of sandwiches are creamy mayo based so it was a different experience to not have it so creamy and filling. Those two items cost $20 - yes pricey but yes its also lobster. Chowder and lobster roll food truck with Po boys....it really does not get much better than this (for me.) We stalked the food truck's radar screen, and it was close to work so we piled in the car and went. There were lines, but they moved pretty quickly. Everyone seemed so happy to get their food, and I loved the chowder and the shrimp po boy. My co workers loved their lobster rolls and fish tacos. Friendly people in the truck. So extra points for that. So quick tips from a newbie: 1) parking is insane. Grab the first one you see, even on the street. Otherwise good luck 2) pager system is nice for it being so busy to be seated - also tell them you're open to seating at the bar for quicker service 3) they sell hoegaarden beer! love it 4) clam chowder - their "cups" are the size of a bowl, so if you want more than one dish a cup is great 5) get their lobster roll sandwhich if you haven't already. and if you're a cheese fan, get "backed" cheddar on top.. mmmm... Last Friday of Lent. I'm supposed to be fasting which means two partial meals, one full meal, no snacking. Le sigh. Fashionable and wise Mayka had given me a week notice to organize the troops (my coworkers) to come down to Moxsie for a scrumptious meal. That didn't have meat. I knew where I was going to have my full meal at. Got there at around 12:15 (truck had opened for business at 11:30 AM) and there was about five people in line and a few people waiting for food. BIG LUNCH TRUCK NO NO: cutting! I think this goes without saying! Two ladies cut in front of my friend and I, giggled and were like "sorry!". ....Right. I bet you are. I stayed where I was but my friend joined couple of our coworkers in front of them as revenge. Anyway. I ordered the clam chowder which was instant gratification. Pipin' hot! I had worked out the day before and I'm short and when I saw how high the counter was, I was pretty discouraged. The guy behind the counter saw the sadness behind these brown eyes and leaned over to hand it down to me. I also ordered the 'shortie' (how appropriate!) lobster roll. I had to wait about 10 minutes for it. Mayka let us into super secret Moxsie headquarters where I chowed down the chowder. It was more than enough for me really. I had to go by then so I brought my shortie back to work with me. Side note: I'm allergic to shellfish but I was willing to suffer an allergic reaction for this bad boy. The lobster was so so but at least there was a lot of it. The bread was toasty and buttery and that part was delicious. The clam chowder was $5 and the shortie roll put me back $10. Best Lenten lunch I've had all season. I recommend the chowder wholeheartedly and recommend that you eat the shortie ASAP and not wait to get back to the office. read more

I'm giving them three stars because the employees themselves are pleasant and have fixed the error I'm about to detail, but if I was judging on food and price alone it'd be two stars. I've tried them twice now and sampled from the orders of co-workers, as well. My brief summary: Lobster roll = kind of bland. Frankly, I've had better for a wee bit less cash. Also, the amount of lobster placed on your roll varies by the length of the line from what I have observed. Chowder = thin and unimpressive. Fish n' chips = meh. I've had better around here... tho the fries are delightfully seasoned. Calamari = so-so, but the portion is way too large for even two people to split. They should consider making it smaller and cheaper. If the purchasing process was efficient and painless, I might be a bit less judgey about throwing down ~$20 for one of the above options... but alas, it is not. Wait time to order + receive your item seems to average anywhere from 40-90 minutes in the blazing sun. Yikes. That's pretty hefty considering this Chowdermobile is mostly parking @ corporate locations, where people generally do not have a spare 40-90 minutes to waste on their lunch break. As for the aforementioned error, their billing dep't (or whatever computer gods control their credit card machine records) randomly charged me for the same thing in multiple, weeks apart. Weird. I happened to spot it on my bank statement and the Chowdermobile folk did correct it, but it was still something to be wary of. I'd suggest paying in cash just to be safe. Overall, I don't think I'll visit the mobile version of this establishment again. I might give the actual restaurant a try one of these days... but I can get an equal or better seafood fix near my office for less time and money. read more

Walked a good few miles around Golden Gate Park to finally find the Japanese Garden right across from where they were camping. I want to say it was worth it, but the price gets me every time I think about it. I ordered the lobster roll- shortie. I mean, don't get me wrong, it was buttery goodness, and nothing short of a heart attack. I just can't see why they would put cash only. The butter kind of masks the blandness of the lobster, so if you just eat the lobster without biting into the bread, you'll probably give this place 3 stars.Their clam chowder was meh, Still had better @ Carmel/Monterey. Fortunately, I didn't have to roll all the way out to HMB for this one - they made an appearance in nearby Downtown SJ, and a co-worker and I drove out to try and snag one of their lobster rolls. SCORE! The line was kind of ridiculous, but I've seen way worse for MoGo's. We shared some chowder, fried calamari, lobster rolls and fish tacos along with two other co-workers who joined us later. I dunno about them but I left feeling pretty satisfied. Chowder: considering its the namesake of this operation, I found it to be just okay. Maybe I'm spoiled by the chowder I had out in Seattle. It was still pretty good though. Fish Taco: Really good but would be better with corn tortillas - but the fish is fantastic and the smoky flavors complement it perfectly :) Calamari: Great! Not soggy the way some fried calamari tends to be after a while. Also well seasoned and they are generous with dipping sauce. Lobster Roll: Buttery lobster goodness! I wanted to give them another shot for the lobster roll but that failed.. and The fish and chips were decent since it was a large portion and the fish was pretty fresh.. Was pondering what to eat for dinner as I strolled along Fillmore in Pac Hts and spotted this red truck right across the street from Woodhouse Fish Co. (hmmm....). I've never been to the actual Sam's in Half Moon Bay, and my eyes bugged out when I read "Lobster Roll" on the little menu. I can never say no to a lobster roll. $15, plenty of lobster. They take credit cards. I was afraid the roll would be mushy from sitting in a food truck all day. But it was delicious. Perfect amount of butter, not mayo-y. Oh, I loved it. But it doesn't come with any sides like you'd get at Woodhouse. I wish this truck would roll around to the FiDi for lunch!! read more

Sam's Chowdermobile... Amazing. I began following Sam's on twitter about 3 months ago, after hearing about their truck from a friend, but our schedules kept taking us in opposite directions. Finally, our paths crossed yesterday for what was albeit one of the more expensive but also more memorable work lunches I've had in a while. Part 1- The food I ordered a Lobster Roll and a bowl of the Clam Chowder. While the price of the lobster roll had me unsure my wife would let me come home tonight I splurged and man o man was it worth it. Big chunks of lobsters, awesome butters roll, every bite was enjoyable. Utterly awesome. The clam chowder was full of flavor and had a great consistency. Sometimes place just can't find the happy medium between super thick and watery, but Sam's hit this right on the nose. A great broth and the chowder was packed with clams, potatoes, celery and other goodies. Part 2- Our unique experience I think the best part of a taco truck is the adventure of getting there, waiting in line and feeling like you "found" something not everyone gets to experience. We arrived at Sam's to find the infamous line, which was actually a lot of fun. A really beautiful day, surrounded by friends, coworkers and strangers. It was a nice time to relax away from the office desk. Just after we picked up out food from the truck, everyone in line started pointing to the sky and screaming and then running in every direction. A swarm of bees descended on the line outside Sam's (maybe they wanted a lobster roll). No one got stung and the bees went on their way, but it was one of the most amazing natural phenomenon I've ever witnessed. Conclusion: This place is hands down worth every penny they charge. Its not something I can do every week, but its something I'll always look forward to! My recommendation is to go for it and try the lobster roll, break the bank a little and do a $25 lunch, hey you only live once :) read more

In my head, I thought I could just wrap up the sandwich in the foil and eat it like a burrito on the road....one bite and nineteen bits of spilled lobster chunks later, I realized that a hearty meal like this is best enjoyed sitting still. $15 for a sandwich from a taco truck seems excessive, but there was so much lobster in my lightly toasted and buttered roll that I couldn't complain. I've eaten at Sam's in Half Moon Bay before, and I'm pretty sure the roll I had today had way more chunks of lobster meat in it. Lobster roll = buttery goodness, and butter really does make everything better. Aside from the lobster being cooked/poached and served in butter and the buttery grilled bread it's served in, the actual quality of the lobster meat was not to be ignored. Tender and juicy morsels of lobster that were not rubbery at all in form or texture. The clam chowder is tasty, served piping hot and they don't skimp on the clams. It's a little more soupy than hearty, but still quite good. read more

The traditional clam chowder is to die for. The Manhattan one was underwhelming. The rest of the menu sucks. BTW, the lobster roll was dry and bland. I really don't know what people are raving about. read more

I thought I wrote a review for their lobster roll but I guess not. Last month the chowdermobile was near my workplace so I finally decided to try their famous lobster roll. I think my friends hyped it too much. And the top 5 best sandwiches voted by USA Today?!?! Really??? Eh, I don't think so. I thought the lobster roll was just OK. First it was frickin expensive. The half was $10 but I heard it is now $11.50 (!) Yes, there were a lot of lobsters but I wouldn't consider it as one of the best. Second, it was kinda oily and too plain- just lobster, oil, and bread. My coworker loved it though. She told her daughter about it and has been on the lookout for the chowdermobile ever since. I told her today that the price is now $11.50 and she said $10 was already pushing it, so we shall see! read more
