I booked the truck for a private event on a Sunday afternoon. The event was for around 90 people. I was concerned with how much time it would take folks to get their food. However, that was no issue at all. I was amazed at how quickly they got each order out. As they moved quickly, the taste or service didn't suffer. The team of 3 guys were great. Very friendly and patient with everyone. Everyone was saying how quick they were and how great the food and service was. This was a great experience from Katie in the office that handled the booking to the day of the event with the truck. Sam's Chowdermobile had the longest line out of all the food trucks at Half Moon Bay Wine and Jazz Festival - and for good reason! When we finally got to the front of the line, I asked if I can sub out the bread in my Lobster Roll for a handful of Old Bay Fries, and thankfully that was fine. My friend ordered a regular Lobster Roll, and the food was ready (quite literally) immediately. It was totally worth the wait - delicious chunks of lobster and perfectly crispy fries. Driven by the restaurant many times and its always packed. So have not tried yet. So when the mobile popped up nearby we went to try it out. We both ordered the 2 piece fish and chips, and a chowder (because you just have to try it. The food was quick, hot and delicious. Decent size for a food truck and great price for what you get. Recently had their lobster roll at a food truck pop up in Foster City CA. Went around 5pm so maybe not the best strategy but the lobster roll just wasn't good at all. For $25, the least I could get was a fresh lobster roll and considering I've had them from Sam's MANY times, I could tell right away something was off. I've been to the restaurant location a few years ago in Half Moon Bay and loved it! So glad they operate via food truck too. No driving a hour and a half in traffic anymore to get their tasty food yay! Normally, I would get the long lobster roll with clam chowder, their signature items, but today decided to go get em tacos and cakes. The food is delicious as always and the crab cake actually tasted even better than at the restaurant, less salty yummy! The sauce they give you to dip the crab cake is so much better than normal tartar sauce. I put some of that on my taco. The deep fried fish taco was so big! Very surprised. I first arrived at the truck at 11:30am to get my FAVORITE item on their menu before it runs out. The KEY LIME PIE. A slice (I feel) is pretty expensive for the size, but worth it. Well. This is the 3rd time that this truck has come to our office, and they didn't have it. You might as well not put it on the hard menu, if you only have it some of the time. The food I ordered came out fresh of the fryer. You can tell that the fish is fresh, no fishy smell or taste (you know what I mean). I am not a huge fan of their tarter sauce, but I do applaud the effort of trying to make it more upscale by using dill instead of relish. The clam chowder today was really good. I personally like that they don't over do it with salt and pepper and just leave it to the people to dress it up how they want. I had a clam in every bite. I haven't been this disappointed since I got $1 from the Tooth Fairy when the going rate was $5 according to what my friends received. Two of my co-workers and I got the crab cake special. With tax it's basically $15 for one small kiddie crab cake, cold fries, and coleslaw placed in one of those small salsa containers. I felt like Sponge Bob Square pants, the portion was that small. There's a $10 "shortie" (2/3 the size of the $15 one) and a $15 lobster roll. So the only difference is really the size. I ended up getting the $10 one! FINALLY.. after months of watching them on twitter and drooling when my friends said they were going to get some I got a lobster roll biyahs! I got a shortie (small lobster roll) and it was simply put the best thing I had eaten in a while. It was rich, buttery, and the lobster spoke for itself. I was satisfied completely. Although some celery like stuff was in the roll it was 99% meat. The bread was soggy but crispy at the same time and once I started eating I could not stop stuffing my face. Since there were about 7 of us we were able to try a variety of things. I got to sample the calamari which was awesome!! It was light, crispy and perfectly fried (no dark coloring). I also got a few bites of Bobby's fish n chips.. the batter on the fish was surprisingly light and crispy.. even after it had been sitting for ten minutes or so (someone couldn't find parking hehehe). You should've seen the line wrap around the lobster fest today for the chowdermobile. We had the clam chowder, which was probably the best in the Bay Area. Nice chunks of fresh clam and potatoes. Not overly heavy in cream. I wolfed it down because I came prepared for a major pig out. We also had the lobster roll, which was fully loaded with lobster meat on a toasted (brioche?) roll. I've noticed the lobster meat on my sandwich was a bit dry, but other than that it exceeded my expectations with the flavor and the choice in bread. After having this place bookmarked forever, my friend and I finally made an adventure out of it and drove out to Golden Gate Park to try their food and hang out outdoors. Looking at their menu online, I think they've raised the prices. When I went, the lobster roll was $15. The bread was delicious--toasted, thick, and buttery--but the lobster could've been better I think. They were served in large chunks, and cold, mixed with some celery. Although the chunks made me feel like I got my money's worth, I've had lobster rolls where the meat was shredded and mixed with mayo, and I prefer those. The clam chowder was yummy, as I would expect since that's their namesake. The bay fries were just very seasoned and salty, not something I would get again. Overall the food was decent, but I'm glad I had already tried it by the time SJ Eats rolled around. Okay, the lunch-truck was in town. Time to grub! The site has a SMALL pic of the calamari. So, I told my coworker, $8 for a small calamari. "you kidding me, I pass". Until he came back with a LARGE TO-GO TRAY of calamari. So, I changed my mind and hit it up. Here's what I grubbed on: Baja Fish Tacos $5.00 Authentic "Baja" style fish tacos, hand-battered and fried, with cabbage and Sam's special sauce wrapped in a delicious warm corn tortilla -The sweet mango made this the best fish taco I've ever had in a long time! I recommend you try this! Sam's Famous Maine Lobster Roll $15.00 Delicious Maine lobster lightly tossed in warmed butter on a toasted bun. -Nice buttery toasted bun that is. We had heard great things about the Chowermobile, so we hit them up when the truck was close to us. On our visit, it was parked near The Academy of Sciences. This was my first time trying a lobster roll, so not sure how it compares to the real deal in New England. There was definitely an abundance of lobster, but it lacked flavor and the roll was very soggy. If this is what a lobster roll is all about, then I'm not a fan. However, the fish and chips were better. The battered fish was nice and crispy and delicious when dipped in the tartar sauce. They were parked nearby pumpkin patches and I thought why not try their lobster roll. Price is decent to me compared to Bay Area pricing. Portion is fine but the lobster was way over cooked. Sam's Chowdermobile is the food truck for Sam's Chowder House in HMB. We had their food in San Francisco's Golden Gate park, very close to the de Young museum. Line was long, but they were efficient. DH thought the best item was their lobster roll (regular size $17.75). Large, delicious chunks of warm lobster smothered in butter, with tiny bits of celery to provide crunch. Truly yummy. The soft bread was great too, except I thought they went overboard on the butter. The thing was dripping butter on the tray! Eat it fast or it will get cold in the chilly SF weather! It comes with a small container of coleslaw - onion forward, crunchy, very creamy, but not tangy enough. Fried calamari ($8.75) is excellent here, even better than at the restaurant. I think it's because you get them straight out of the fryer. They're hot and super crispy. The dipping sauces are delicious...one is a cocktail sauce and the other is a tartar sauce. Clam chowder ($5.50) is thinner than the stuff from cans. :) It is a white, New England style chowder with clean flavors, not smoky like the ones we've tried from Seattle. There are little pieces of bacon in there. It seemed too salty after a while. They get bonus points for large clam pieces. There are also potatoes, which were well cooked. We spotted the chowder truck from the top floor of the de Young, and we're like, "we gotta go there pronto!!" There is nothing better after a day of fine art appreciation than to treat yourself to some chowdah! The only thing keeping me from 5 stars, is dude was out of white clam chowder!!! So we got the red, which was good but a little too peppery for my dad and Tom. $5.00 bucks for a cup, comes with oyster crackers. But what was more delicious than you would ever imagine, was the shrimp po'boy sandwich. Oh my goodness, lightly battered, freshly fried shrimps spilling out of the bun. I finally had the chance to try Sam's after following them on Facebook and Twitter the last year... I got there around 11:45 and there was already a line...not too bad though. 5 people ahead of me and ordering was fairly quick. The wait was about 8-9 minutes for an order of fish n chips and clam chowder. The fish was flaky and fresh. The 2 filets were pretty big...very generous with the portions. Unfortunately, I did find two small bones in my fish near the sides :( The tartar sauce was a bit bland. For $9 it was a good deal. There was a ton of seasoned fries under the fish...again very generous. The fries were quite tasty with just the right amount of spice. I ordered the white New England-style clam chowder. For $5 the little togo bowl seemed a bit small. It wasn't as creamy as you'd expect. In fact, a bit on the watery side. There were quite a few clams/potatoes but again...it was really missing the creamy-ness you expect from clam chowder. The food truck was stopped at Golden Gate park. I saw the signs "Best Lobster Roll by TODAY", etc. All that advertising made me curious so I wanted to see what all the hype was about. So glad I did. It was the BEST lobster sandwich I had ever had in my life!! OMG!! Super yummy!! I got the shortie roll, it's the smaller version of the original lobster roll. When I got it, it was overloaded with HUGE lobster pieces, celery, and tons of flavor. I was amazed at the lobster pieces. I could see the meat from the lobster's claw in its original form. So worth the money! At first I was a little hesistant to pay like 11 or 13 dollars for a dinky sandwich, but it was worth it. It came open faced on a piece of heavenly buttered bread. It was like a baguette. The bread was overly buttered and soft so it went really well with the lobster. I could break the bread off with a fork easily. I went to Sam's Chowdermobile after getting some culture at the de Young Museum. I went to the cafe, and there was nothing that looked appetizing. The, they resorted to cheap tricks by filling lobster only at the mouth of the bread roll and leaving a huge vacuum inside. You are fooling nobody with it. They were supposed to be here, and I assumed that meant ready to serve food, from 11 AM to 12 PM. They were parked with their sign out but at 11 they said they wouldn't be ready for 10 minutes, at 11:10 they said another 5-7 minutes; No food came out of that truck till 11:25. I don't know what kind of flexible schedules they think people have but they should make an effort to be ready when they say they will be or at least be honest about how late they are going to be. As for the food I was surprised at the prices posted, considerably lower than listed on their website. I was just going to get the clam chowder but for $10 decided I couldn't pass up a lobster roll and decided to get both for $15. I couldn't believe how small the lobster roll was, two and a half bites and it was done. The last time I saw one it was about three times the size and I thought it was still small for a sandwich but this one was the smallest sandwich I've ever seen. It was tasty for the two minutes it took to eat but in no conceivable way it was worth $10. I suggest they make an honest lobster roll and charge what they need to, I felt tricked. I expected the chowder to be good since that is their specialty but it was kind of bland, a little watery, and just above room temperature. The website advertises 16 ounce servings but this wasn't close to that, maybe half. Quite honestly taste wise it wasn't any better than Progresso. This is what I call gourmet food on wheels! Had lunch at the DTSJ site with Julie K, and then a couple of weeks later, when I caught them late at the same spot (SunWize building) for a quick lunch. The short Lobster Roll was suprisingly satisfying with a screamin toasted-buttery roll and loads of succulent lobster meat. The Fish and Chips were another favorite of mine. Our Property Manager makes sure every tenant in the building receives an email about Sam's coming to our parking lot to serve some deliciousness usually around 11:30 am. My coworkers are always the first ones in line BEFORE they are open for service, why? It is SOOOOOO good!!! Beats anything I tried at the chowder cook off in Santa Cruz. And make sure to pair that chowder with their calamari and lobster roll. The calamari has just enough batter for the right amount of crunch. And their cocktail sauce is great (I don't even like cocktail sauce =P)! The lobster roll has a nice toasted, buttery roll and tons of sweet lobster. I also tried the fish and chips but I was so full that I didn't eat it until later. Even a few hours later the batter retained its crunch, but it wasn't as special as I thought it would have been. Better to stick with the items I mentioned before.
