Bear Steakhouse came across my radar when I was searching steakhouses located in Upstate New York. The majority of customers/reviewers gave the establishment positive remarks. Being a skeptic, I decided to reserve a table and see what the rave was about. The inside of the restaurant is reasonably smaller compared to other steakhouses that I have been to. However, this is beneficial to the customers, as the staff is able to tend to everyone's needs. Both the waiter and waitress were very familiar with the menu. Being a new guest myself, I welcomed their recommendations. During my time at Bear Steakhouse, I had the Fresh Mozzarella with Roasted Peppers and Tomatoes, the Beef and Vegetable Soup, and the Prime Rib. All three plates were very delicious and they arrived to the table in a spread out time. This was good as it allowed the time to enjoy and digest every dish. Although I didn't have enough room for dessert, I did order the Tiramisu to go. This also did not disappoint. In the end, I'll admit that the reviewers were not exaggerating when they posted their stories about Bear Steakhouse. I look forward to my next meal here. read more

This place was fantastic! Way off the beaten path, it is very tricky to get reservations as most nights there are only two seatings. It's a very small dining room with less than 15 total tables, but the atmosphere is very relaxed and conducive to sitting and enjoying your meal. The menu is very limited but everything on it is worthwhile. We ordered an assortment of items that were recommended or we saw every other table ordering and nothing disappointed. The beef/vegetable soup I can EASILY say is the best soup dish I have ever had. The shrimp cocktail was excellent,huge shrimp, and the cocktail sauce, very obviously, uses fresh horseradish. The filet mignon was seasoned and cooked perfectly with potatoes and carrots both delicious. We also had someone get the Delmonico steak which was, without exaggerating the saline of his face. We ended with a four berry cobbler which was fantastic. The waiters were courteous, attentive, great personalities and happy to give recommendations. Château Briand was delicious, tender rare beef, carrots crispy and potatoes well seasoned ...... $135 for the 2 person portion but had enough for two more meals, we took it home with us. We had a long drive back home so we skipped on any alcohol. Worth mentioning is that the water tasted like it came out of a garden hose even with the lemon we requested. We should have known better, but still ordered the coffee with dessert which oddly was only a half pour that neither one of us finished anyways. Service was exceptional and very friendly (found out later he was the owner). The bartender was super nice too! Without asking, she came over to give us more whip cream for our tiramisu (SOOOOOO YUMMY).... We appreciated her attention to detail and humor. I would have given it overall a 5 star rating if not for the ill repaired, outdated bathroom (missing hand towels, a mirror, and kind of a mess). The dining room was quaint, but outdated and lacked appeal for a meal that cost $186 after tax, and $215 after gratuity. It's not the price we scoffed at one bit..... the meal and service and was wonderful. If back home in Rochester we paid that price, we would most likely been in a fancier upscale establishment. Awesome dinner on Friday, 3/1/24. They serve dinner once on Thursday & Friday and twice on Saturdays. Our reservations were booked in December. It's worth the wait!! Upon arrival we were greeted by a friendly staff, a full bar & a dining room with seating for around 60. We ordered off their menu as there was only 2 of us. Our next visit will be for their specialty! The steaks (filet & delmonico) we ordered were decadent & cooked to perfection. Portions are very generous & include carrots and potatoes along with a fresh salad and fresh baked bread. The desserts are prepared in house & were also spot on. The food is the best I have ever had and the comfortable setting with great service made it memorable for sure. Lots of take home leftovers for each of us to enjoy at home. Home made deserts where the topper to a great special night . With all of the above you need to know that its definitely pricey and for us it would be only for a future special occasions. Im so happy I finally was able to have our family together to experience this great dinning experience. Our bill with drinks and deserts and a 20% tip was 1200.00. We had a lovely dinner at the bears tonight. Party of four and we had chateaubriand for two and prime rib for two. First of all, the service was impeccable. Our waiter, I believe his name was John, was very welcoming and accommodating, friendly and helpful! He helped with our wine selections which were great, and incredibly reasonably priced for the size of the pour ! The mozzarella appetizer was very delicious. We skipped the salad because we didn't want to fill up. Then the meal came, and it was so much food. We were expecting too much food, but this was enough food for a party 4x our size. The ambience at The Bears is cozy and it was a great experience. Although we were too full for dessert, we managed to order some desserts which were insane and I am not even a dessert person. The pies were divine. Oh I forgot to mention they brought out beef stew on the house which would have been a meal in and of itself. It was one of the most tender, well seasoned, absolutely delicious preparations I've had in a long time. I wish I could say the same about the rest of the meal, which bordered on being kind of average. Shrimp cocktail appetizers were fine. The starting salad was extremely generic (and could benefit from some interesting homemade dressings or something). The potatoes and carrots served with the meat were forgettable. I get that the meat is the main attraction, and rightly so, but they could really put more effort into the accompaniments. I will say that my dessert (a peanut butter cream pie) was excellent. And I loved our server. Actually, the whole vibe of the restaurant in a cozy house setting is lovely, and the special occasion joy of a giant platter of meat being brought to your table is worth a visit. Wonderful dinner. We were a party of 6 and we preordered the chateaubriand for 4 and 2 ordered off the menus. 1 getting the chicken and 1 getting the pork chops. We were greeted as we entered and seated per our reservation. The staff were very attentive and very pleasant. We had various drinks and shared the shrimp cocktail as an appetizer which was very good. The beef was cooked to perfection and everyone raved over their meals. We all took food home, however before leaving we shared three deserts that were outstanding. We were able to have conversations easily and had a great evening. If there was something to improve upon it would be that they only have carrots as vegetables and would like to see more variety but we will go back at any time. I'd read some of the reviews regarding high price and other negative comments and have to say I found The Bears to be exactly what I'd hoped for. Soup and salad DOES come with meal. I had salad ( with amazing bleu cheese dressing) and he had the tomato bisque, delicious. The chateaubriand was superb, the carrots tender and sweet, and the perfectly cooked and seasoned potatoes were excellent. For all of the options in Albany at similar price points or lower, The Bear's is grossly overpriced for some good food and other areas that are just okay. The last prime rib I got was so over seasoned it was hard to continue eating after a little while. The vegetables were mushy, baked potato is just a baked potato. The beer list is ok. Skip this place if you've never been. You can spend the same amount or less and get amazing meals all around the greater Albany area. Greeted by the friendly waitress and owner. The menu is very simple. First thing we ordered is the cocktail shrimp followed by the chicken soup and the pre-ordered big plate of beef with red wine sauce. The famous cocktail sauce will open up your sinuses . They are heavy on the horseradish. So it is good but not something I would take a 3 hour bus for. However the chicken soup blew me away and we ordered an extra to go. The soup is clear with robust flavor from the veggies and spicy sausages. I think they used a lot of bones and veggie to make it. It is the best chicken soup I ever had. After that I saw our neighbor's dinner, a big piece of prime rib. I am not kidding it is big!!!! While I was convincing my husband to let me order it on top of our pre-ordered meal, a big plate of chateaubriand landed in front of us. It immediately squashed my thought of ordering the prime rib because our plate was even bigger. It was huge! It was the most tender meat I ever had. No effort to chew. I can come back and eat this when I am 80 years old with my dentures. We had a good amount left over to bring home. I called to make a reservation for 5 adults and a 4 year old for a special family birthday dinner.. Immediately I was told no babies allowed. I explained my granddaughter was 4. She told me this was an adult restaurant and no food for children on the menu and actually children not preferred there at all. She was not the most receptive or pleasant person on the phone. She could have explained in a more polite way. Yes, I get it. Expensive dining and they want the patrons to return and kids could make noise or not sit still. About 3 years ago in early December I called here to try and make Valentine's Day reservations. I figured they would be busy so I wanted to get ahead of the crowd. The answering machine message said that they were closed for the holidays (perhaps since Thanksgiving?) but I could leave a message. I did, asking for a call back... which I never received. Around the third week of December I called back and talked to an older woman who told me that they couldn't take reservations for the next year because they hadn't purchased their new reservation book yet. Huh? I asked if she could write it down on a piece of paper but she said she couldn't. She also told me that their menu always changed so she wouldn't know if they would have prime rib or chateaubriand that Valentines Day. This doesn't make sense, as both are always offered (plus, I am sure whatever they served would have been fine). After talking with her for several minutes and getting nowhere, I said I would call back in January. I called mid-January and was told that they were full for reservations for Valentine's Day. You need to make reservations in advance. It is family owned. John waited on us. He was hilarious and he gave incredible service. I wanted to surprise my wife with a trip to The Bears. I made my reservation a month ago knowing how popular they are. It was a 40 minute drive that was rewarded with one of the best meals I've had in a very long time. Both of us decided to order off the menu instead of requesting the chateaubriand that they are noted for. The bread they brought out was warm and enjoyable as we waited for our appetizer, the vegetable beef soup. The soup was amazing. They use some prime cuts of beef in the soup and the broth is to die for. It was so good that I got 2 orders of it to go. Next was the salad. My wife had hers with Blue Cheese, I chose the Parmesan Peppercorn. The dressing tasted great. Next came the main course. Be prepared to arrive hungry because the portions are extremely generous. My wife got the "Mama Bear" size filet mignon and I ordered the Delmonico steak. The sides were roasted red potatoes and glazed baby carrots. Kudos to the chef!!! Everything was cooked to perfection, and the steaks were delicious. As I said, the portions are very generous and both of us brought home some to enjoy tomorrow. My wife is a huge chocolate lover, so I was surprised when she ordered the blueberry/lemon cake. It was so good she said she was glad she ordered it instead of the chocolate cream pie. This is a family run restaurant, and it shows in everything they do. Billy, the son of the owner, was our server and he was another part of what made our visit so memorable. Worth the drive. We went on a Friday night with another couple. Reservations, like others say, are a must, it took us a few weeks to get reservations. It's a small place, looks like a house. Very limited seating. One of the foursome ordered a shrimp appetizer. I've never seen shrimp so large. Husband ordered tomato, basil, mozzarella appetizer. It was huge and could have been a meal in itself. The prime rib we ordered (it's served family style at the table) was huge and beautiful. It was very tender (a little under cooked for me, but still tasty and delicious). The baked potatoes were the best cooked potatoes I've ever had. The vegetable was a side of baby carrots. Soup or salad is included in the costs of the meal. We all had salad. Decent sized and dressing was good. The rolls that were served were ok, but to be honest, I wasn't there for the bread! We did not finish our meal, plenty for take home. We wanted to save room for dessert and I'm glad I did. The chocolate cream pie was good. A huge plus for me was that they serve Pepsi products (it's the little things that count). It is a very pricey place, so not a place I will return anytime soon, but worth the money. $213 was the total bill (before tip) that was with 2 alcoholic beverages and 2 sodas, appetizers and dessert. Oh, I wish. I wish that my expectations - ok, be fair, my hopes - had been realised. I wish that I were about to be kinder. I wish that there was something on the wine list to attract, intrigue, or satisfy. Hell, I wish that we had gone to a different restaurant. None of which should suggest that the folks at the Bears' (and surely that is where the apostrophe should be, no?) were not friendly: they were fine, if rather harried and abrupt. I expected the latter, given the two very large - and rowdy - parties with whom we shared the room. The dated decor, the tiny wood-panel bar, even the scratched and antiquated china: I would have had no problem with any of this if the meat had been as fabled. By now you will have guessed the punchline. So: reservation famously hard to get, menu irrelevant - we're there for the chateaubriand, party of 10. We've had the concept of corkage dismissed out of hand, and some prior googling - largely on Yelp - tells me that the best bottle will be a $15-retail cabernet, priced at $47. OK - it was not awful, just a disappointment in what was hoped to be a special meal. One of my friends had two vodka-cokes - very very very much not my thing and he tells me that the price is not abnormal, but $75 for two drinks? with bottom-shelf liquor? really? OK, move on. Bread is anonymous and textureless... but ho! the appetisers are promising. Some tasty smoked salmon (and very potent fresh horseradish), enormous plates of mozzarella and tomato with grilled peppers, stuffed peppers that are far too vinegary for me but at least avoid the sin of being too meek. Salad following is bag-lettuce without any adulteration. At this point I have been pleasantly surprised to discover that on a beer list otherwise containing Heineken and Miller light, they serve Three Philosophers - good news. We're ready for the main event. I had seen pictures online previously, and assumed that the apparent grey colour of the chateaubriand was a glitch of lighting - nope. It's grey, not a hint of crust nor a trace of Maillard. Very heavily peppered, undersalted. It *is* - as expected - ludicrously tender, readily edible with a fork; but I would rather have lost a bit of that for some taste. My heart has sunk. Baked potatoes - the butter and sour cream are in commercial plastic sachets - and some surprisingly decent (heck, borderline excellent) glazed carrots. Plenty of leftovers. But: nowhere near as good as I make at home, not close to e.g. Black & Blue, and only the meat quality elevating this at all above a random diner. Can dessert rescue matters? This feels like the kind of place that does in truth make their own desserts, and I think that's correct: if you order the tiramisu you might in fact leave happy despite the preceding issues, because it is just fabulous: moist and intense and perfectly integrated. Kudos - that might almost deserve a third star by itself. Sadly, while my wife ordered that - and I ate much of it! - my choice of the chocolate cream pie was a gelatinous and low-cocoa affair. No way was I about to order a cup of the coffee that had been sitting on a burner ever since we walked in. We dropped well over a thousand dollars on dinner, so more than $100 per head. I don't exactly feel ripped off, really - just disappointed. There's basically no chance that I would ever go back, and it's as though a light has gone out: I was really hoping for this to be a hidden gem of the culinary landscape - and it's not. read more

My friend and his family have come here for 30+ years, so they know the owners, who seem to be quite friendly with every table anyway. The bread was soft and warm, and it would be too easy to fill up on, but I knew what was coming. I don't know of any other place that does chateaubriand, so I have no basis for comparison, but I don't need one when the meat is flavorful, with a nice crust on the outside, and melts in your mouth. The baked potatoes were a perfect consistency, not too hard, and not mush. There are also baby carrots heaped in the middle, but like sausage, not in my wheelhouse. I have seen reviews where people complain about the price. Yes, it's per person...because the platter is specifically set for the amount of people you bring. It's also the royalty of meat. Apparently the peanut butter pie is incredible, and sometimes, my friends have requested the owner make it on the night they come. Unfortunately, this time, it wasn't to be (add peanut butter to my list with sausage and carrots). However, the birthday boy had a piece of chocolate cream pie, candle included, and I had what was called "banana split" pie, which is a banana cream. Both slices were huge, and mine had not only chunks of banana, but slivers of coconut. WELL, I have to figure since we are local we dont matter or maybe its because we are not regulars or maybe we are considered low class!! We got served by the " bar tender"! the table of 6 "richie riches" from out of town got the ownwe and were chatted up and served like kings and queens! We got our bread long after our salads and my sisters prime rib end cut was killed! left feeling embarrased to be treated with such disrespect and a $150.00 bill!!! wasnt worth it at all and the embarrassment of feeling that the owner couldn't even ask us how our dinner was but chatted up the strangers next to us like they had been friends for years! We may be " hillbillies" but like Jesus you never know who you are dining with! WE WILL NEVER GO AGAIN!!! we could have had a nicer prime rib at the 99 for $16.00!! SNOB HANG OUT!!!
