Just had an incredible experience at Sushi Kawa in Desert Hot Springs The sushi was absolutely amazing -- easily some of the freshest fish I've had. Being out here in the desert, I wasn't expecting sushi this good, but it was perfect and honestly the best thing to eat in the heat. Everything tasted super fresh and clean. And the highlight of the night was the person serving us, who goes by "the old man." He made the whole experience even better -- great service and a great personality. We came here for dinner one night because we love sushi and udon. I am glad we did. The waitress was very sweet and got us seated and drinks right away. The restaurant has cool walls with drawings from guests all over. It's fun to look at and is a good conversation starter. Good news and then the bad news! We finally found an outstanding sushi spot in the desert. We absolutely loved everything and would order it all again. Our sever was outstanding when I ask her how long this sushi bar has been there she said three years, but her team took it over six months ago with a whole new menu and staff and now they're leaving next week and returning it back to the old owners! We were so upset that they are leaving. We will give the old place a try, but hopefully it's not going to be as bad as it was before they took over. I saw the reviews from a year ago and they were pretty bad. She told us they are training the new sushi chef so hopefully he will make the same dishes and they will keep the same quality of sushi. read more

Location is nice, directly across the street from the Las Palmas Resort, walked here for dinner. Of you're driving, lots of parking. The service here is so nice, sat instantly, big smile and quick for everything. Music in the restaurant is melodic piano, which was nice after a long day. Ordered a Maui roll, Cali roll, and edamame. It was quiet and not busy inside. We were the only two there but a family came later. Service was fast and very friendly. Sushi was good but I don't usually like when they have canned soda because not refills and also that the sushi didn't label all the ingredients. I don't like spicy mayo and it didn't state it was in it and also I can't handle spicy food but it wasn't so bad but was surprised that the sushi with raw fish had some sort of chili oil that I consult handle so I couldn't really eat them comfortably. And we told the server that I don't eat spicy food but they didn't tell us about the he chili oil on it But think maybe she didn't know. But it wasn't still ok. read more

I've been to this location several times through the years and it was always hit and miss. When I found it was under new ownership, I thought I would give it a try. Wow!!It is the best sushi place and freshest fish I have found in the Coachella Valley. The new chef and owner, chef Michael, is fantastic. For lunch I had the three hand roll special for $19. Salmon, blue crab, and spicy tuna. They were all fantastic. Please come support this establishment. Wow, what a find this is located on the far side of the river complex behind the show. We happened upon Sushi Kawa on Friday. Other than Joyce's it was the only place open for lunch. We had several different rolls. The rainbow roll had REAL blue crab! We also had the hand roll trio which was amazing. The most interesting and different thing that we had was the pressed Sushi. It was very, very good. The service was very attentive. If you're looking for chicken teriyaki go somewhere else, they have primarily sushi and sashimi. Which they do very well! Went to see Oppenheimer at Cinemark River, then wanted Sushi. Looked on Yelp and Kawa was 300 ft. away. We had no idea. This will now be our favorite Sushi. We went very basic with Cold Buckwheat Noodles w/Sashimi, a deep fried California Roll and a Pork/Beef Cutlet. Everything was perfect and delicious. Servings were huge, so that turned out to be two meals for us. Service was great, atmosphere was cozy but not intimate. Food was five stars plus. Will be back any time we are in the area. read more

Came here with my wife and two kids and had an amazing experience! The sushi was excellent, and we started with edamame--when we asked if it could be made spicy, the waitress gladly did so, and it tasted fantastic. Our son wasn't feeling well, and the waitress noticed and kindly asked if he was okay. She then brought him a miso soup with rice, free of charge, to help him feel better. This place made me sicker than I've ever been in my entire life. I've had an intussusception, where they literally remove part of your colon, and the stomach pain caused by food poisoning at Kawa was worse. The worst part? I was reading all of the terrible recent reviews while eating the sushi that tasted like fake plastic at the same time. I should have known better. I'll be reporting this restaurant to the department of health, the better business bureau, filing a claim with American Express and will probably have to call the police as I suspect they serve whale fin soup off the secret menu. read more

I started with bluefin nigiri, then had the Hawaiian roll, a spicy yellowtail hand roll, and finished with eel nigiri. It was all great, but I would absolutely get the eel nigiri and the yellowtail hand roll again in a heartbeat. Staff is kind and helpful and the chef was a delight to talk to and to watch at work. Sushi was delightful! Always appreciate when the rolls are pre-separated to pick them up a little more easily. Also makes the plating more appealing. Got the rainbow and requested lemon slices on top. Even though the lemon slices were additional, they incorporated them into the roll thoughtfully, and didn't just slap them on top (which I also would have been fine with since thats what I'm used to). Every bite made me audibly "Mm!" Rolls weren't particularly cold, however, so if that's how you like your sushi, that may be something to note. I don't usually enjoy seaweed salad much but they added julienned radish(?) slices and it really added some spunk to the texture. Also tried the Hama Hama and Aloha, which were similar to one another but both lovely. Ask if they have fresh wasabi available; it's different from the usual wasabi, and it's absolutely amazing. Yeun was our waitress and she was very polite, friendly, and attentive. Asked if it was our first time there and walked us through it all. Let us know they had fresh uni (sea urchin) available if we wanted to try it, so we decided we would. I'd never tried it before and was a little hesitant but this one was unlike urchin I'd seen before. The texture was incredibly creamy, like ice cream. The flavor was very reminiscent of the ocean, as one would expect. My brother and dad both said it was the best uni they'd ever had. Yeun spoke as though she was proud that I'd tried it lol. The chefs thanked and greeted us as we left. The ambiance was pleasant, though nothing overly impressive. The bathroom mirrors were neat! I liked the bronze faucets. They could probably afford to replace their rusting paper towel dispensers. My family had a good time reading all the signatures on the walls. All the drawings made the place feel warmer. We're not from the area but if we pass through again, I know I'd want to stop by again! Just depends if it'd be in the budget that day since the prices are nothing to laugh at. read more
