This was our first time at Samurai and we were quiet pleased with the experience. I was a little shocked that the restaurant did not have more customers for a Saturday night, though, and was initially skeptical. The chef was great! We've been to many Hibachi restaurants, and I thought he was very entertaining and put on a great "show". Another reviewer mentioned their use of garlic - it's true, it went into everything, not that we minded it tasted very good. Things I liked; the chef asked if there were any food allergies before he started; he joked with us and it was very interactive (I've been to some where the chef just goes through the motions and that's not very fun); everyone there knew it was my son's birthday and we didn't even have to ask for the birthday treatment, they did it automatically and we weren't charged for it. The only thing I didn't like was the smell from when the chef cleaned the grill - right as we're digging in to our food. It was different than I recall from other places. We were meeting a friend at the marina and decided to give Samurai a try as they could accomodate a party of 12. We were all very pleased with the food and the hibachi table easily took all of us. The "show" was fun, the service prompt and we all had a good time. I had the salmon which was cooked perfectly; the amount of food is definitely generous. I went here with my girlfriend to have lunch because it is right down the street. I ordered a salmon lunch box and they ended up giving me a shrimp lunch box. When I spoke to my server telling her I had not ordered shrimp she proceeded to say to me "can you try to eat it anyway." For the amount of money you pay to eat Japanese food you would like for your server to at least make an effort to give you what you ordered. Needless to say I will not be eating here again. Really good sushi in Croton. A long time fan of this place. Food and service are really solid. We enjoy the sushi. Always fresh and tasty. We are regulars and only drawback is that the sushi choices are all pretty standard. Nothing really unusual stands out. Fried rice is delicious and when we do hibachi they always make it fun for the kids. read more

I used work as a waitress in this restaurant, but I quit the job after 2 days because its kitchen is too nasty. The basement of kitch is full of running mice and roaches. Beside, because its bussiness is slow, many food is spoiled, but still sale to the customers. When I worked there, I can not even eat employee meal over there because the food was too dirty. This is a tough one. The food here is really good. Truly deserving of a 4 to 5 star rating. However, the service for a take-out experience was really bad. They quoted me 15-20 minutes for my pick-up and it ended up taking an hour! The hostess had to ask me 3 times exactly what I ordered. Seems like some organization and process issues that they can clean up. I don't know how this place got so many good reviews. We ate here before going to the Great Pumpkin Blaze, we are not local to the area. It was pretty frustrating. First of all, we had several waitresses, none of whom understood English very well. Every sentence was met with a "Huh?" Then, somehow, through a secret hidden translation device, possibly, they figured out or guessed what I was saying and repeated something similar back to me as if it was their own idea. Every time they came to the table, they wiped the polite smile I reserve for waitstaff off my face and left me disgruntled, confused and frustrated. It's pretty strange for so many people to rub me the wrong way, with everything they said. There was trouble explaining that we weren't ready to order. There was trouble with the drink order. There was some discussion about whether or not one roll would be enough for me. The waitress didn't understand my question at first, but then her secret translator told her what I said, and she suggested I could order the roll and maybe get something else later, if it wasn't enough. Which is kind of what I had just said. So I ordered my roll. Not only wasn't it enough, but it was NOT what I ordered. I was so frustrated with the various waitresses lack of understanding that I didn't even bother trying to send it back. I just poked out the gross eel with my chopsticks and tried to eat the rest. If it had been the item I ordered, I might have been full, but it was not, and I was not. NO CHANCE OF ORDERING MORE THOUGH. The very second I put the last bite in my mouth, the bill arrived with a thank you, good night and a vanishing waitress. There was a line to get in so they were only interested in turning over the table. Usually in Japanese restaurants, it's fairly hard to get the bill, as if it's bad manners to bring it unless they've been asked for it. I've experienced this many times in other restaurants in the US and in Japan. So I suspect this is not a Japanese staffed or owned restaurant. I checked the bill, they had written the right order down for me, but the chef didn't make the right thing and the waitress didn't check. I slipped off the the bathroom and my husband said he had to practically sit on the bill so they wouldn't take it away before I could sign it. The very moment I signed it, they snatched it away and demanded that we have a good night, and we were out. As we left, I saw a woman desperately trying to explain to the wait person that what she got was not what she ordered. Good luck lady. read more

I never do this kind of thing but I think this sushi restaurant is deserving--- I called to see what time they stopped serving --10pm, we got there at 9:30. The waitress tried to take our order 3 times within the first five minutes of sitting down. During the entire meal, a group of kitchen staff stood around the kitchen door and constantly glanced over at us and made remarks to each other as we ate. I looked up and one of them had his stare fixed on me so I say "hello, can I help you?" The waitress asked if she could box my friends meal quite literally as she had chopstix in hand and food on her plate. By the end it was so uncomfortable as three of the remaining staff stood around and obviously talked about us that we took their hint and left. WHY SEAT PEOPLE IF YOU ARE GOING TO RUSH THEM OUT AND BE INSANELY RUDE? It was(beside the lovely company of my friend) the most unpleasant dining experience I have EVER had!The food? who even knows, I was too distracted to notice. read more

I understand hibachi places are more about entertainment that quality food but the food here was the saltiest I have had. While many of the staff appeared gracious, and the service was good, I didn't appreciate the sarcasm and rudeness of the server. She kept insisting my son's name is a girl's name and referred to him as a girl. She then asked us if our camera was fake. When my son said thanks when his food arrived the server said to him "look me in the eyes when you say thank you". We go out to eat often but I have never experienced nonsense like this. Samurais is my new favorite place to dine in Croton. Not only is the food amazing, but the service is as well. The prices are also very reasonable and the restaurant is cozy and nicely decorated. The people there were very friendly and made sure to check on us to see if the food was okay. When we first walked in, we were greeted by a big smile and a warm welcome. We got hibachi and the chef was extremely skilled and did classics like the onion volcano. I will definitely be going back to this place often and I highly recommend it! read more

We tried them for lunch and had one of the weekday lunch specials. I love tempura, and quite liked their shrimp and vegetable tempura (except for the broccoli). My only complaint would be the tiny sized bowl for dipping sauce that wasn't deep nor wide enough to get the vegetable tempura pieces into. I also had the eel roll which was very tasty, and the shumai was also good. Rice was served loose on the plate without a bowl making it harder to eat. Overall, I was very happy with the food, but would like to see an adjustment with the serving bowls/plates. Service was good despite our dining at an "off" hour. read more

I had a wonderful experience at Samurai while I was in town to see the Pumpkin Blaze. I live in Manhattan and love to go out to eat, but when I travel it can be pretty easy to be picky about what you find. Samurai was one of the better experiences eating outside of the city. In fact, I've eaten at Benihana's in Manhattan, and Samurai was much better. The food was excellent, with the portions and prices great. Our Hibachi chef was very entertaining and fun! It was one of the best shows I have had eating Hibachi. I wish I remember his name, but the other chefs looked just as fun as ours. They did all sorts of tricks- the sake surprise was very well appreciated and great! The manager continued to check in on us and make sure we were satisfied- the service, ambience, food, and overall experience was really what I would give five stars to. Samurai is awesome, and we will be back when we are in Croton on the Hudson again! read more

I gave four stars, only because my boyfriend mentioned that one of the ladies there are never really nice to him, and I recalled the same there from times past. We went about 2 weeks ago for dinner with my 11 year old son for Hibachi. We had a blast. The Hibachi chef was extremely entertaining and got everyone at the table involved. My son's eyes lit up and he had a great time. The food was delicious and the portions we're much larger than I expected. I've also made this my only sushi place in the area, as many other places just don't deliver what you'd expect from sushi. Definitely worth the drive from Peekskill to Croton, when there's a sushi place minutes from my house. I just won't settle for less now that I've had Samurai Sushi. I do think that there may be a couple of people there who aren't the friendliest - but if you're going to a restaurant to make friends then you're not there for the right reason. I'd rather have one or two grumps and an awesome dinner, than to have the nicest people serving me and then have the food turn out like crap. So don't write them off based on the attitudes just yet. They have a lot more to offer then you may realize. read more
