This is probably the best Sushi Restaurant in Marin and finally open again! I have no clue what took them so long because it pretty much still looks like before they closed the spot for a year or so. This place is amazing. We had the pleasure of visiting on a Wednesday night. There was no wait, most likely due to some NBA Conference Finals game; but hey, their loss was our incredible gain! The food was deliciously delectable. Everything was fresh, the fish was succulent, and the flavors were out of this world. We had fresh wasabi (apparently wasabi is a plant and not a paste) and I can't accurately put into words the experience that was happening in my mouth (and nostrils). I don't think I can eat sushi without fresh wasabi again. We ordered the chirashi, different types of rolls, and chicken teriyaki meals for the kids. All was made to perfection. Totally "meh" sushi, especially compared to some nearby options. Hamachi Kama appetizer was overdone. Restaurant is extremely loud with a normal crowd but excruciatingly loud when there's a birthday party of little kids screaming and climbing over the booths, with parents screaming over the screaming kids trying to quiet them. I'm not specifically an expert in sushi, but I know quality when I have it. Fresh stuff, great service, good variety, and too decent of a price (especially for Mill Valley). People might complain about lighting/environment, but I ate at the bar so there was plenty of light there. But the food should be good regardless of that. The owner/chef might be young, but is an expert at what he does. He and the staff are all friendly. Overall great place to have fun and relax and enjoy some good sushi. read more

We went based on the raving reviews and the "$$" price range- not overwhelmed. I called ahead to make a reservation- they only take 4 and up, we were just 2. We arrived before 7 and found 2 seats at the bar quickly. As for the food: we ordered Miso soup, Veggie tempura, Sesame chicken for starters and sashimi and spicy Tuna rolls. The Miso soup was good (not too salty), the tempura was a letdown, not crispy at all. The chicken was a bit dry but the sesame sauce was good. The Sashimi was ok at best, we ordered Sake (Salmon) and Toro (fatty Tuna). We missed the salmon taste and the buttery texture of the Toro (which was not the real marbled kind). The portion was generous but price reflected that too: for 10 pieces each the tag was 54$. I total we paid 101$ plus the tip. I liked the Kawaba wheat bear, but to pay 9$ for a small bottle seems over the top. We traveled 9 times to Tokyo in the past 2 years and have some comparison to make as far a s sushi is concerned. read more

When I travel for business, I try to find locally owned 'joints'. I'm a midwestern girl, living in DC but I have to say... I love it here in CA! Not difficult to find great and diverse food. I followed fellow yelpers to Samurai. Great choice. Super great sushi in a very convenient spot when leaving Muir Woods. I had a Philly roll (reg salmon, not smoked... just my preference) and a Florida roll. Sushi chef was really nice and very quick. Samurai: please don't stop doing what you're doing. Your fish is fresh and vibrant, full of color and flavor. Your specialty rolls are world class. You have a board of nightly specials that are actually special. You almost always have uni. Your chefs aren't surly and crabby. Your prices are exceptionally reasonable. I can always get a table or a seat at the bar. There's no TV to annoy me with blue light and sports games. You are everything I could ever ask for in a neighborhood sushi restaurant. Just in case you think I'm a freak: you're not perfect. Service is a little spotty, but good-natured. Tempura is usually a little soft (just turn up the heat in the oil and lighten up the batter - we all love tempura but it should always have some crunch!) I wouldn't mind if you turned the lights down a tad to have a little atmosphere in the dining room. Your nigiri is a little too big. But.. that's about all I can come up with, and am pretty critical. And none of that means anything when compared to the quality of the fish. After 30+ visits I have yet to have bad fish - which is astounding. You must have a buyer at Tsukiji because your fish is amazing. Never dried out, or mealy (gross!), or fishy. Clearly you have pride in your craft, and refuse to do what must be so tempting for American sushi chefs... "just put out the borderline fish, they probably won't notice." Some of us notice! And we appreciate it! Every single time! Thank you for respecting your craft! I just returned from NYC where one of my favorite sushi restaurants is Blue Ribbon. I dropped $200 by myself. I've eaten there a million times and it's usually worth it. But there was some fish they just shouldn't have served. I didn't eat it and the manager was ashamed, apologized, and comp'd me, as they should. But it's not about the cost. It's about the principle. A sushi chef should throw mediocre fish in the trash before he serves it to his customer. Period. And at $6 a piece it should be near perfect. We tried Samurai last night for the first time and were rewarded with melt-in-your-mouth sushi. We walked right in at 7:45pm on a Saturday night and were immediately escorted to the sushi bar. The bottle of Kurosawa sake was very tasty and the perfect accompaniment to our meal, I'd recommend it. I'm trying to find their menu so I can tell you exactly what we ate but can't seem to find it. We had a roll with lemon zest on the outside that was crazy good and another with a sauce (Mountain Roll?) that nailed it. We also had hamachi sushi and an unagi hand roll (the biggest I've seen) that were also very fresh and delicious. Even the mochi was good for dessert. We'll be back! read more

They aren't very customer oriented. I've ordered one roll to go ($11) and payed by card multiple times, and now I've tried to get my regular order and pay by card and they tell me that the card minimum is $12. As this has never happened to me before, it seems like they are just trying to get me to order more. Now is especially not the time to get people to try to pay with cash (unnecessary germs). read more

We just had dinner at the Samurai that we have been ordering for the past thirty-five years. A big change has taken place. Their Chicken is diced! Less Prawns! and over all flavor has dimished. Very good place for fish. I eat here often and chat it up with the owner/chef. We talk about his 6-year old son and how he's faring in school. Back to the fish: excellent cuts. He also makes awesome hand rolls like the Alaskan, Florida and California. If you're adventurous, try the Ankimo-monkfish liver, and ask him for some ponzu sauce on the side. Bonus: they have the best cold sake pours in Marin. Lot's of good luck spilling over onto the plate. read more

Great sushi restaurant in Marin without having to drive to the city. Fresh fish and reasonably priced. They always have some special sushi on the board that is not on the menu. I have been going there for years now. Sushi Ran nearby is exceptional but can only afford for special occasion. Samurai is getting very popular so recommend making reservations. Love the new owner and sushi chef Brian. He always makes us special rolls and the sushi here is the same caliber if not better than Sushi Ran - just way less expensive and way less crowded. I'm Japanese and have worked in sushi restaurants before so listen to me when I tell you it's good stuff! Also great for kids, they have an awesome chicken teriyaki and tempura kids meal that my two kids split and love. The 12 piece sashimi is a steal. The owner has different sushi items ivhave only seen at this place which is nice from the typical California roll sushi resturant. Great local sushi spot! One of THE BEST SHRIMP TEMPURA I have ever had. The tempura wasn't too oily and plenty of shrimp! The sushi rolls we ordered were also very good. Tasted fresh. Seating and lounging area felt real cozy and it looked like the go to local spot for sushi goers in the area. Our server was a delight. The restaurant is quaint and clean, the waitstaff was friendly and helpful and the menu was a nice mix of traditional rolls to be expected (for instance I tried the Rainbow Roll) and specialty rolls worth trying. Went with my husband. Started with a small cucumber salad with sesame seeds. Was nice and fresh. From there it went downhill. I had a soup that tasted like hot water with some vegetables and potstickers in it. It tasted like water and there was no seasoning at all. My husband had some miso soup that tasted watery with no flavor or seasoning. I was not looking for gourmet, just a fairly tasty meal. This was the worst Japanes food I have ever had. There was no care that went inot it. My husband did not like his salmon and said the food was fairly tatseless. I would not recommend this place. read more
