Unfortunately I can't recommend this place. Upon walking into an empty restaurant at 8:20pm on a Monday nightI had this sense of dread immediately. It was dark and dingy. I've had my fair share of cheapy sushi joints and the dinginess meant that it was either going to be awful or if I'm really lucky, a hole in the wall hidden gem! Only one way to find out. We sat down and noticed the pricing was quite high. Okay, the BOGO 50% off advertised makes sense now. (I personally hate this sales tactic just price your menu accordingly. Don't make me do math.) That brings the pricing down a bit and is a little more reasonable. The sushi came out relatively quick. I thought the standard rolls were too small. Instead of the 6 pieces there were only 5. And they cut it super thin too. Definitely stretching something here. The salmon was just okay, didn't have that bright fresh taste but in the back of my mind the whole time I'm thinking "you get what you pay for". The food here is inconsistent sometime good sometimes it's less than average. Today the service was terrible. We walked in to order food to go. We waited for 10 minute for some none to take our order. We sat down to wait for our order and were asked to get up from our seats to let other customers take our seat. I asked why if we had already paid and we are waiting for our food--this place is tight with no where to stand. There was a booth open aside from where we were sitting. Then the host had the nerve to raise her voice at me and talked about me to the chef in Korean. She thought I wouldn't understand. The restaurant wasn't busy and it took from 12:55 to 1:21 pm to get our food. Don't order takeout from here. And if you call ahead still be prepared to wait 30 minutes for them to make your food while you wait and don't sit at the tables they will kick you out like you're not a costumer. We ordered the vegetable tempura, salmon sashimi, Alaska roll, and La Paz roll - sugoi! The tempura was crisp and hot. The sashimi was a generous portion and flavorful. the Alaska roll had scallop and roe i side, salmon outside, very nice! A regular date spot for my girlfriend and I. The buy one get one half off special pulls in a lot of people every weeknight, so there is a great community environment here. Staff is excellent and everyone is always welcoming and friendly. This visit we got the Mexican roll, special #7, super rainbow roll, and crazy bites. Fish was fresh and delicious as always, and we always appreciate the variety we are able to get. Woo hoo! I chose Samurai Sushi in Mission Viejo to be my #500th review because it exceeded my expectations and sushi is my favorite food! When I parked at the strip center off of La Paz and Marguerite (technically a street behind Marguerite at the Commerce Center traffic-light - plenty of free, easy parking!) it did not look impressive but I was recommended here by a friend so I went in to try. The first thing I noticed was it was PACKED! Wow this place is popular (they even have photos on the walls of all their customers) and after trying the food, I can see why. Even though it was the Sunday after the 4th of July weekend, all of the fish tasted fresh. I also saw an employee bringing in a bag of fresh lemons from a store into the restaurant while I was there. HOWEVER, this is the type of restaurant you to go to eat fun rolls (or maki). Don't come here expecting high end nigiri. I mean you can order the nigiri and it's ok but I wouldn't come here to order a bunch of nigiri expecting a fine dining experience and then give this place a bad review since that's not the kind of restaurant it is here. Personally I wouldn't order nigiri here - I go elsewhere for that! You come here for super yummy creative rolls (they even have an entire page of zero-rice rolls if you want to be no-carb!) and fun appetizers. I ordered: Baja Roll (spicy tuna, cucumber, avocado, cilantro on the inside with fresh yellowtail and jalapeños on top) = 10/10 delicious! Washington Roll (basically a California roll on the inside with sliced salmon on the outside - then for $1 extra I had them thinly slice lemon on top of it = my favorite!) 10/10 delicious! Vegetable Tempura - this was super tasty I got pumpkin, carrot, onion, potato, broccoli, green bean - this was a delicious assortment! 10/10 delicious Everything was delicious and fresh and exceeded expectations. The service was also outstanding - especially from the guy in the glasses (sorry didn't catch his name). I was served my food very quickly and I was checked in on multiple times to make sure everything was good and I didn't need anything. As for as ambiance, there are many tables, a few booths on one wall and a sushi bar. There were TVs playing sports but the volume wasn't on so you could still have a conversation. I was looking for a sushi spot in MV, and came across samurai! Unfortunately, I was just not impressed. I ordered a Tiger Roll since reviews of the raw fish were all over the place on Yelp and that scared me away. The Tiger Roll had a crunch/CA roll inside and shrimp/avo on top. It was one of the blandest rolls I've ever had, and I instantly understood why it came with so many sides of different sauces... also one of the shrimp pieces in the tempura had one of those nasty shrimp poos inside (I mean it happens and I get you can't catch it all especially with a tempura shrimp but still...ew). I also tried a few pieces of two other raw rolls, but they had some odd tastes and were not anything I would order again. The crunchy roll sprinkles on top of one of the other rolls was super stale. Seaweed salad was good and a huge portion for sharing, which makes sense given it was $12/$13. I wish there was a smaller size, however. Overall, not impressed. We have found mold in our sake cups, had stale sushi (who knew that's a thing), and had to double order our dinner because they got it wrong and wouldn't fix it. Super frustrating and super done. Came here for lunch this past Friday. The sushi was okay. Really appreciated the number of no rice rolls they had although the cuts of sashimi on top of the rolls were thin given the price of these rolls. The carpaccio (where you can choose your fish) was terrible in presentation, quality, and flavor. We chose albacore and the fish cuts were bad. The raw fish was presented on aluminum foil and the garlic chops were alternatively too thick and soft or burnt. But what really stood out was the terrible service. I normally prefer to sit at the sushi bar, but chose a table on this day. Big mistake. Waitress brings out ginger, wasabi, chopsticks and plates, but they're all just stacked together and that's how she leaves it. No separation of the plates (one for me and my guest). We order a bottle of sake. It's brought out with 2 sake glasses stacked together. Waitress doesn't open the sake bottle or even separate the glasses. It was laughable as far as service goes. This place isn't great, but the service is so bad that it's a definite pass if you're looking for a sushi place. You can do better. read more
