Loved Zenko! We did all you can eat sushi which they do every day of the week and I thought it was great. It's a pretty casual place with very friendly and helpful staff. We prioritized more nigiri and less of the hand cut rolls which were both great. For me, the special items really impressed including the Green Baked Mussels which were super flavorful, the crispy rice, spam musubi, and takoyakis. Makes me sad because we were always willing to go for sushi here and drive atleast 9miles but unfortunately tonight was terrible. The bento became small and not even worth getting it as the food also wasn't good quality. The beef terriyaki that we got was almost all gristle!!! We came here on a Tuesday for AYCE lunch. We were overall satisfied with the experience. Our server was very friendly and efficient. We were the only customers there at the time. Our orders came out pretty quickly. The sushi was fresh and I enjoyed everything I ordered. The appetizer section was lacking my favorite items that are commonly offered at similar sushi restaurants in this price range. There is no shrimp tempura, beef teriyaki, salmon teriyaki or salmon collar. The fish to rice ratio wasn't good- too much rice in the nigiri. I also wish they offered seared & cajun nigiri like other restaurants do. They don't offer green tea ice cream or mochi ice cream to end the meal which would have been nice. This is great local AYCE sushi. The service was so nice and friendly. The sushi and other sides all came out fast. The fish tasted fresh especially the salmon. The rolls were all good with decent rice to fish ratio. There are also a couple other special treats offered - halibut, sashimi in a martini glass, and fatty toro. All great. I'm not sure why this place has only 3.5 stars. We came here for the all you can eat sushi. We were greeted by friendly staff and started ordering right away. I'm not usually a big fan of all you can eat sushi because the fish is often not the freshest and you have to chase down the wait staff to place any additional orders. These people were not hiding and they weren't shy with the portions! The fish was fresh and each of the plates were better than the last. He was aggressive and had a poor tone. 2 people out of our group had AYCE and the other ordered off the menu. During our dining experience, the owner starred at us from a corner chair across the room the ENTIRE Meal! It was very off putting and creepy. We were all very uncomfortable. Not to mention the quality of the fish was not good. The salmon was slimy and tasted bland. Made me sick to my stomach and when I mentioned it to the server. As a south county local we would come here once in a while because it's closer, but now it beats everything else in Orange County. The improvement from the past is noticeable when you see the quality of the fish. They have soft, buttery sushi, that tastes extremely fresh. The rice has the perfect consistency and the menu is bigger with exciting new options. The people working there are incredibly nice and clearly experts at making sushi. Great service, pro chefs. I hadn't been here before the management change so I can't speak to the difference in quality but I CAN say that whatever this new management is doing, they're doing it well! I went in with a friend on a weeknight, we were able to be seated really quickly (which is great, since my other favorite AYCE sushi spot takes FOREVER - for good reason but still!), and they answered any questions we had right away. We got to ordering and honestly the rolls came out so quickly but they tasted wonderful, fresh, and were also presented beautifully too. We never felt rushed but our server definitely came in to check on us a few times, topped off our waters, etc. and my friend and I had a great time. The place was relatively empty but I can see how that will change once people pick up on the management change and quality! The store itself was clean and nicely-lit. This is an old favorite for us, as the quality and price were always a treat. So we gathered the family and grabbed lunch. The restaurant hasn't been updated in a long time, but is still reasonably clean. Staff used to be very engaged and friendly, but that seems to have diminished over the years. The food was still very good and offers a ton of variety for an all you can eat meal. They also have great offerings if you just want an order and eat options. Probably the toughest pill to swallow is the price increase! Lunch used to be around $17 and dinner $25, now lunch is $28 and $35 for dinner, which is pricey and a huge jump. We came for the lunch AYCE because we wanted to check the place out under new management. Interior is your average sushi joint, but cozy, tidy, and clean. Bathroom is very well-maintained too. We were greeted and seated right away even though they were moderately busy. I was so pleasantly surprised at how fast the food came out, we ordered 10 rolls AND nigiri AND appetizers all of them arrived within 15 minutes. I honestly liked that not everything came out at once so we had time to work our way through so the table would have room for more plates. The seafood was fresh, not fishy at all. My parents owned Daikoku Sushi and Japanese Cuisine at this location from 1985-1998. It's nice to see those who took over since then kept it a Japanese restaurant and made some great improvements to this place! What was once an 80s diner with red booths and red carpet, is now an open, more modern look with tables, tile flooring, expanded sushi bar and recessed lighting. That might not sound very impressive, but take my word for it that this place got a much needed facelift! I've had the pleasure of coming here a few times over the past several years, and have had positive experiences each time. I believe they were closed for a bit during the pandemic as they did not create an outdoor eating area. They have a pretty comprehensive menu, but I've only ordered off their AYCE selections. AYCE lunch is $22.95 and dinner is $27.95- great deals!! Rather than a buffet, they give you a menu that you can order three rounds of food with. AYCE includes appetizers from the kitchen, sushi, hand rolls and cut rolls. The slices of fish on the sushi are quite thin and small, but there's a generous amount of fish in the hand rolls. As you might imagine, the choices of fish are basic on the AYCE menu. No uni or amaebi, that's for sure! However, they do have some rolls with soft shell crab and crawfish. I was leaving rice on the side so as to avoid getting full quickly, and noticed the menu asks not to do just that! The menu also mentioned they would charge for any food leftover, but the servers didn't seem like sticklers about these requirements. In fact, the servers are really nice and friendly. The large amounts of sushi we ordered came out pretty fast too. AYCE is the way to go here. I guarantee you'll get your money's worth! read more
