Let's start with service it was awesome!!! Our personal server was so kind and attentive! Food - leaving this here so this cute restaurant can make things right for future customers - I was served fish that was starting to turn color. I pulled all the fish out and it was all the same. I lost my appetite. The rice around the sushi was unfortunately not cooked all the way and even crunchy. I didn't have to say anything. My server saw all the unappetizing fish on my plate and brought a new one!!!! He was amazing!!! And not his fault. Sushi chefs. :( But he did mention that fish was for baked rolls.. so I may never eat a baked fish roll again.. or sushi at that fact! I had ordered a togo soup. Ugh what a bummer!!!! The soup leaked through the container into the bag. And the styrofoam that the noodles were in was deformed/melted from the temperature of the food. I wonder how often this happens to other togo orders??? And this could be an easy fix changing packaging! Although, my experience was not great... 2 others cane in to pick up togo orders raving how amazing this place is!!!! And gosh did I want it to be for me!!! Service excellent! Food experience awful.. due to a sushi chef making a terrible decision on meat selection of freshness and packaging of togo order melting. Food I would give a 0 star. What a hidden gem! After our favorite sushi place abruptly closed in Merced, we have been on the search for a comprable place - meaning good cuts for sashimi and rolls that were more adventurous than your standard fare, on the lighter healthier side and not so big you can barely eat them. We found the reviews here and decided to go for a pre-Thanksgiving family tradition of sushi the night prior. It reminded me a lot of little sushi places down in LA in strip malls, dark windows do you don't quite know what delight might be waiting for you. Well, we were not disappointed!! Adorably adorned with a little sushi bar counter and a nice open chef's kitchen. Lots of beer choices though I had a wonderful fresh brewed very hot Japanese tea served in a small stone carafe. The sushi rolls, nigiri and sashimi selections are vast and they have assorted other Japanese dishes too. The sashimi are generous portions and extremely fresh. The three rolls we shared were absolutely delish... they even have their own secret spicy tuna mix that was amazing! The staff and chef, kitchen were so friendly and welcoming to boot. Our waiter did an excellent job of walking us through the menu for what we had in mind on healthier options. The added little bonus of the yellow tail that they ran out of but gave us what they had on the side! We'll definitely be back and start working our way through the second column of the menu!! I normally don't leave reviews, but this is my worst sushi experience. My SIL placed the order through DoorDash as I do not use food delivery service and I am here visiting I only ordered the beef teriyaki bento with gyoza add-on which was an up-charge and the Japanese Mafia which I have yet to eat . My bill cane to about a ridiculously high amount for those items with fees and tip I wouldn't have done it but I was craving sushi and my SIL was kind enough to make sure I was comfortable So, absolutely, my BIG MISTAKE! I unfortunately am recovering from an illness and unable to be out about with them, hence the food delivery. The beef was TOUGH!!!! The rice did not taste fresh nor did it taste like Japanese rice. It looked and tasted like steamed white rice that sat too long. My salad dressing was some kind of ranch fusion and not the traditional ginger that I'm used to seeing or eating. The miso soup that came with bento meal was standard just like the California rolls. Nothing great. My gyoza upgrade looked like it was frozen and a little on the salty side or it could have been the sauce. They also forgot to include soy sauce, but whatever. The soy sauce is the least of my concern at this point. So, needless to say, if I could leave 0 stars I would. Maybe it's because my expectations are higher because I live in a larger city, but that wouldn't be fair to Turlock. I'm no sushi snob by any means but I have had enough GOOD SUSHI/JAPANESE to know that this is definitely not GOOD. It's not even mediocre. May post another update after I try their specialty roll. More than half the stuff we tried to order (Edamame, udon, fried rice) was not available. The staff was nice, nice is cool but it's not Udon. Last time I had an experience like this was in a foreign country. On the other hand this is Turlock, compare that to the big city I'm from it could be a foreign country. I decided to stick with fried food so as not to test the freshness of the fish. This was a Labor Day Monday after a busy weekend. I'm not into that type of risk. The service is slow here, they have a small staff. They all work hard and that's worth a lot. The restaurant is clean but not polished. The staff is not wearing masks or taking any extra precaution at all. The Miso soup was okay, very very standard. Shrimp poppers were good, sweet and spicy with great crunch! Deep fried Philadelphia roll, the unfortunate highlight of the meal! Tonkatsu, the fried shell just fell off a tiny price of meat, a total disappointment! What was in the Bento box? I'll tell you what wasn't in the box. No wasabi, pickled ginger, soy sauce dish and no chop sticks. I did get a fork in my salad! No dipping sauce for the tempura, no dipping sauce for the gyoza. Mostly it was just a bunch of no. I'd not come back. All things being equal they still get 3 stars in my book. I still had a good time and was able to connect with my loved ones around a table. The food was good. The small little place is cool. However, the customer service wasn't that great. It took about 5-8 minutes to get the menu. Also wasn't told that we could grab the menus ourselves when first walked in. It was my first time there, so how was I supposed to know I could grab the menu myself lol. I got my drink once and was never offered any refills and I got a simple water. The waiter wasn't very active even though the place wasn't very busy. My table was also not offered any individual plates so the food could be shared and put on. My table had to use our napkins as an extra place for our food to sit so we could eat it individually. I even saw the table in front of me get individual plates... Overall, good food but mid customer service. If I come back to dine in and I experience the same service, I might just do takeout instead lol. read more

I picked up the Dragon roll and Rainbow roll and both were unimpressive. The Dragon roll was doused in a teriyaki sauce and parts of the avocado laid over the top were browning. I feel like the sauce was used to conceal the below average ingredients and prep and it just made things worse. The Rainbow roll was decent taste-wise but the fish laid over the top was extremely thinly sliced. You can find better sushi in Turlock at a similar price. read more

Strip mall sushi. The cut on the hamachi nigiri was horrible and taste was off. The lobster roll was a lobster mix that had very little lobster. The only decent thing about this place was the waiter. Well there was a lack of communication with the staff. They made an extra tuna roll, we told them that we had gotten one already waitress said the first one would not be charged. The other chef was freaking out, it made us feel uncomfortable. Then the original chef left and the staff started to talk about their weekend, drinking, fights, 4x4ing until 4 in the morning. I watched the waiter make it after I waited to return for a good amount after the quoted wait time. Not sure where the chef was. My roll was completely missing the cucumber that was supposed to be in it, as well as having the tiniest sliver of avocado. He also forgot to add the fish eggs I paid extra for until I reminded him. The place is small, barely have space to move around. Short on staff. We ordered the bento box which tasted very mediocre. We also ordered the chicken udon which was a BIG mistake ever. The soup tasted like the sea water, just very salty. We added ice water to the soup to dilute the soup and cannot get rid of the saltiness. The udon noodle is salty itself.
