Dr. Wade Lee is an excellent dentist. To my regret I left the office because I never got a statement for my treatments. I had to call my insurance to verify the charges. I always was overcharged by several hundred dollars. The staff gets only one star for being rude. read more

Nothing fancy about this dental office, for sure. But Dr. Lin is AMAZING--very knowledgeable and friendly and efficient and experienced. He is very patient and will take a lot of time to explain procedures and offer different options, if available. My husband and I have been going to him for the past 3 years and think he's absolutely top notch. I've personally only had good experiences with the staff; in fact, I find them more friendly than most elsewhere. And despite another reviewer, I've never thought that anything I have encountered there was dirty or unsanitary. Dr. Lin rocks! read more

This review is for Dr. Nguyen's shady operations called San Antonio Dental. I wish I checked the abundance of 1-star reviews here before getting involved with this "office". Both of my kids were assigned to this office by my dental plan. I do not have a preference with dentists, so I agreed to be assigned to this Dr. I called to schedule a cleaning appointment. On the first call, I was told that Dr. Nguyen is "not available ever". Surprisingly, turns out there is another doctor with the same name operating out of the same office who will see my kids. He is not listed in the directory(!), but it's the same last name, Dr. Nguyen, albeit a different first name. The earliest appointment was a month and a half out. I went ahead and scheduled it. Few days before the appointment, I get a call from Sylvia, "the office manager". Right off the bat, she states that the other Dr. Nguyen is leaving the country and he is not available after school hours anymore. I indicated that my kids cannot skip classes. The conversation deteriorated quickly then as I asked for a possibility to speak to the doctor or he can call me back to chat. At that point, Sylvia proceeded to say "you should not come to this office at all". After I said this is a denial of service and I will report this to my insurance plan and the Dental Board she said "go right ahead" and hung up. I believe while I never had a chance to speak to the dentist, the "office manager" experience, as well as the switcharoo with doctors with the same last name smells of the insurance fraud and at the very least, indicates the level of commitment of this dentist to his patients. The staff is pretty friendly and so are the doctors. The wait can be a little long and scheduling can suck, but they get the job done and they accept both my HMO and PPO plan. I'll definitely be back... with or without cavities. :) read more

I've been twice and both dentists were nice and knowledgeable. However, they seem to have some turnover there - my dentist had left and the staff seemed different. I didn't like the rooms either. They are more like cubicles, so you don't have any privacy and you can see and hear everyone else. read more

I have been coming to San Antonio Dental for more than 11 years. I had never experience any bad costumer service or just experience per say. I am beyond disappointed that the front desk lady that I would always see since my first visit, is no longer there. She was very helpful, very mind full of her patients and their care. She would always do her best for everyone to come out with a nice smile and most importantly, for her patients to be back. The Dentists were very nice and caring for their patients. Now a days they have nice Dentist, but It feels like this place is falling a part. It takes so long to get an answer to a simple question now a days. The receptionist by the name of "Helen" super rude lady. She does not listen at all. She wont listen carefully or le's you speak, and then I have to repeat myself more than four times on the phone when I call. She gets super frustrated and sometimes even hangs up the phone. She won't follow up with you on important matters. You have to do it all for her. I won't recommend this place to anyone. Stay out of here! seriously... read more

The place is dirty, the staff's personal hygene is pretty bad, dirty smocks, sterile (?) gloves in dirty pockets, who knows where else they have been before they go into the patient's mouth. Although the dentist seemed quite good, and was not pushy about treatments, the administrative staff tried to push every conceivable treatment at outrageous prices, way beyond my health plans' co-payments. I went here for my check up/cleaning last year and returned again today for the same. Both last year and this I saw Dr. Chu and was very satisfied with his care and would recommend him. As a dentist he's very patient, gentle and takes his time examining every tooth. Both last year and this year he said my teeth were fine. The office isn't fancy at all. But in the past, I've been to real fancy looking office's with snobby dentists who rush in yank your mouth around and rush out. I'm sticking with the less fancy office but much kinder and less pushy dentist. read more

I was not at all thrilled by this dentist office. There are no real rooms, just like cubbies. You can hear everything being done to the person next to you. The dental assistant was pretty cold. The dentist was a nice lady but her technique was not so great. She did my cleaning herself, which I thought was going to be nice, but instead it felt very harsh and she was trying to juggle the cleaning pik and the suction herself resulting in water being sprayed all over us from my mouth and down my neck and shirt. And she just said oops and continued working without cleaning me up or stopping so I could. Pretty gross. Also the equiptment seemed very outdated. I have follow up work that needs to be done and I will be going elsewhere. read more

Location: The location of the office was very convenient, lot of spacious plaza parking. Frontdesk: As soon as I arrived, i was greeted by the receptionist. I was thankful that i was able to get an appointment so quickly to get my molar looked at, for it was giving me a lot of discomfort. The receptionist was friendly and patient, guided me through the simple paperwork. Wait time: Within ten minutes or so, i was taken into the examination room, and had x-rays taken of my tooth. The assistant that took them was fast, professional, and knew exactly what she was doing. Where as in the past, other offices would have trouble because I have quite the gag reflex. Dentist: Soon after my x-rays were taken, Dr Wu came in, examined my x-rays and explained to me that I had a molar that needed to be removed. I was a bit nervous, but overall, the experience was totally beyond my expectations, it was fast, quick, and painless. Definitely recommend Dr Wu. Recovery: Just as Dr Wu described, minor soreness, but everything healed up just great, discomfort is gone, no side effects haha. Overall experience: Kind, patient, professional staff, great dentists all equals to one happy customer. read more

I chose this office because they were listed on my insurance his website. While the dentist was very friendly and competent, his staff on the other hand was not. Turns out they don't actually take one of my insurances and ended up costing me three weeks of pain due to screwing around while trying to verify my insurance and what will be covered. Eventually I was told that I should just get the work done anyway and not worry about using my secondary coverage because it's "only $3000 anyway". I don't know about you but $3000 is a lot of money to me and they took so long getting back to me, I ended up getting the insurance company's verification of benefits myself. They refused to give me required information and finally told me that even though they're listed on the site, they won't take the insurance until "maybe after the first of the year" when they're adding a new doctor to the practice rather than updating their current information with them. Thank you for waiting 3 weeks to let me know so I could go somewhere else and get the work done and actually NOT be in pain....like I said the dentist was nice enough, but I'd steer clear due to his staff! read more

I want to be clear that I'm rating the dentist here, and not the receptionist. Dr. Chu was excellent. He was knowledgeable, considerate and responsive to my concerns and questions. My procedure was no more painful than other similar procedures I've had at other dentists in Palo Alto and Berkeley. The procedure was quite a bit more expensive than similar treatments I've had in other places around the Bay, but I'd rather pay more and not have problems later than pay less and worry about the quality. The office is a little run down and the equipment does not look to be the latest and greatest -- but I'm not much for cosmetic things. I'm paying for the Dentist, not the waiting room. Summary: Dentist gets 5 Stars. Office and equipment get 3 Stars. Average: 4 Stars. A Note on The Receptionist: Many other Yelp reviewers have noted how rude the receptionist is -- I think they are referring to the Asian one. I have to agree. She is extraordinarily abrasive for someone whose job it is to deal with customers every day. I almost went with another dentist based on how rude she was with me on the phone the first time I called. It was really surprising. I assume part of the woman's job is to help the dentist get new customers, and here I was a new customer calling, and she was brusque and unhelpful. She sounded to me like she was upset that I had called. And like my inquiries were keeping her from more important work. I wish someone would advise the dentists to place someone else in the customer-facing role at the office, because I am confident that they are losing business based on that woman's behavior. The reason I went through with the process and made an appointment is because their office is close to my work, and because they take my insurance, and because a co-worker told me that the dentists are good, despite the rude reception. I had the same experience as Lisette H. I called several times to book an appointment and the receptionist was super rude and unhelpful. I was required to choose a provider when I signed up for my insurance and chose this one blindly based on location. I should have done my homework first. I kept calling and the receptionist kept saying I wasn't "On their roster" but I should call back in a week or so. This happened a few times so I finally called my insurance and they immediately faxed over the forms and said I had been on their roster for weeks. When I called the dentist's office back the receptionist again was super rude, finally booked me for an appointment and wouldn't listen to even the simplest answers I gave to her questions. I'm cancelling my appointment. These guys seemed super, super unprofessional on the phone and I'm glad I read these reviews because it doesn't seem worth taking a chance on a quack dentist. read more

I have been going to see Dr Steven Lin since 2001. He is very gentle and kind. He knows his stuff and do not try to up-sell you into getting treatments or tooth whitening procedures that you do not really need. I have not had a bad experience here. Everyone from their reception staff to their dental assistant to Dr Lin are all very professional. One time, they made a mistake on my insurance claim and they promptly corrected it without me having to spend so much time on the phone getting the runaround. This place wants to rip you off. The asian receptionist and Dr. Huang insisted I take x-ray for a front teeth crown re-cement. I told them I had x-ray done at their place 2 weeks ago, but they insisted. $60 for one front teeth, which they can clearly see without x-ray(I was told two weeks ago by another doctor that usually within one year one does not need to retake x-ray). I didn't see the doctor looking at the x-ray either. I can understand they want to make money but with such highway robbery tactic I cannot recommend anyone to go there. read more

We saw Dr. Lin. He was fine. Not great, but nice enough and did a fine job on some fillings. He gets maybe 3.5-4 stars. We were satisfied with his work. My husband and I were not very impressed with the staff though. Problems include: 1) On the day of my cleaning, the hygienist had a cough. She wore a mask or whatever, but two days later I had a cold. We hadn't been around anyone else with a cold. Pretty disturbing. If you're poking around in someone's mouth as a job, maybe you should go ahead and wait to come back to work until you are no longer contagious. 2) One (or more?) of the women who answers the phone is incredibly difficult to understand and also has a difficult time understanding you. Mostly this was just frustrating. 3) Maybe they're understaffed, but on at least 3 occasions, I ended up having to leave a message when trying to make an appointment during regular business hours. What was weirder (and considerably more annoying) was the fact that I never got called back. I had to call over and over to make an appointment. Were they trying to discourage us from coming back? It was the scariest dental cleaning I ever had and it was by a female dentist whose name I will never remember. Her trying to be pleasant small talk was painful too. I usually don't have any trepidation about teeth cleaning, but the dentist would stop every 3 seconds, ask if I'm okay, while hitting my lip with the dental tools. When she went back in, she was using the tool rather sloppily and would jerk it back up again. She didn't know where to place the suction device and would leave it in my mouth while she went looking for tools. After awhile I told her she was talking to much and not looking at my teeth because she kept on yanking the tool in and out of my mouth and asking me if I was okay. She even had someone come and help her and stuffed cotton on my gums because I told her she was hitting my gums too hard. It was just sloppy handwork and the cotton made me uncomfortable. The assistant seem to know better where to put the suction device than the dentist. After awhile of this treatment I certainly WASN'T OK. I was supposed to get some fillings done (not for cavities....), but I decided that it was too much of a risk and left the office after the cleaning. I took me a long while today to shake off this bad dental cleaning. Like I said, I usually DON'T have a problem with dental work!!!! She wasn't in a hurry like someone else reported - it took 40 minutes of torture. My former dental hygienist at Rutner Dental was always painless and uncomplicated, and I never had the emotional trauma like I went through today. Their office is a lot more friendlier and modern too. I think I'm going to change my dental plan and not go back. Only reason I went here is that they are the HMO provider in the area. read more
