Sadly I use this location for nut and bolts mostly. The variety is good at Ace. However I had a male employee treat me poorly on this evening. The young male employee apparently believes he is special and can laugh.at customers who are trying to resolve a problem of items being told are available only to find out this was untrue. The management and owner apologized for this behavior and state that it will be addressed. I drove 20 minutes to be laughed at by this employee. So, ACE has a employee who feels it's ok to be rude. I went to the hardware store because the front wheel of my walker was falling off because of a missing screw. I received a friendly greeting by man standing right inside the door. I told him my problem and followed him to the nuts and bolts area where he picked out two things and proceeded to put them on my walker. "That should do it". My father owned a hardware store in a small town in Illinois. What a treat to receive such care and attention. This cost me $1.38. Of course I could have ordered the screw and had it mailed to me to do it myself but I wouldn't know what size. It probably would have cost me $10 and I would miss the great help I received at Ace. read more

Great local hardware store with amazing service. 90% of the time there is someone there at the door to greet me and help me find what I need. They are available, attentive and knowledgeable, unlike you would find at the Lowe's Depot. Parking is great, often right in front. Prices are not that much more than other options. Yes, there is no way a small operation like this can compete with the behemoths but the time I save coming here is well worth it. A quick stop for a few items is a piece of cake. Attempting the same thing at the big stores would take four times longer while I curse to myself in traffic, parking, and the inability to find anybody to assist me. The family loves the popcorn! It's a great place to bring the kids and show what it's like to support local small business. read more

This is a nice medium-sized hardware store with a very helpful staff. A much better vibe and experience at the cost of a more modest variety of stock. I was told they do not deliver or set up but they have a list of handymen. Ample parking. Surprisingly, while they are useful source of the missing piece of a project, they are also competitive on price, and stock larger items that you may not expect to find a few blocks from your house. This hardware store isn't a True Value anymore; they have very recently become an Ace Hardware. However it's the same wonderful management as before - knowledgeable, friendly, beyond helpful.i recently went there for window screens. They made the frames to my measurements without the screening material to be sure they fit. Well they didn't fit. Seems that the windows are not square. I took the frames back to the hardware store expecting a charge for the frames (only fair, right?). No charge and a recommendation for a good mobile screen company! I'll take San Carlos Ace over Home Depot or Lowe's every time and suggest you do too! read more

I went here to grab a replacement part for a project at my house, but I wasn't exactly sure if I was getting the right part. As I was headed to the register, Peter came up to me asked if I needed any help. Long story short, Peter took the time to help me get the proper parts and I successfully completed my house project. I went in today needing help with finding waterproof tape. I asked the man at the key making machine, Danny, if he could help me. He very rudely told me he was making a key for "someone in the store" (no one besides me was standing there) and that he would help me afterward. While I waited, a woman walked up needing a key made. Danny finished making the key, & left the machine area, presumably to deliver the key to the nebulous "someone." He walked right by me, ignoring me as if I weren't there, and offered to help the woman make a key. Needless to say, I was surprised and frustrated. At that moment, another employee was wrapping up with someone else, and I asked if he could help me, saying within earshot of Danny, "thanks, since it appears Danny is ignoring me." As we walked toward the tape area, I remarked how lacking Danny's customer service was to me, and this person said, "Oh, that's Danny!" WHAT? Let me get this straight: Danny's rude behavior is not only well known by colleagues and mgmt, but apparently condoned??!! Unbelievable! That is the first time in over 25 yrs of patronizing this hardware store that anyone was unfriendly, rude, etc. What dismays me more is the blasé attitude when it was brought to the other employee's attention. As I walked out of the store after purchasing my tape, I heard Danny saying to the lady needing the key, "as if I weren't already having a bad enough day." Wow... read more

The simplest things in life at this hardware store are not easy. We tried to return a sink drain plug, we were charged $19 for it. Tried to return it we were charged $19 again and then returned $19. We're still $19 short.! Apparently the manager and anyone else in the store is never available to help. They are rude. Do not like to give great customer service. I had the best experience in True Value today. I had a mini crisis at home as I accidentally punctured a copper water pipe when doing some remodeling. I needed a small pipe cutter because I had minimal clearance. 2 people helped me try and find one in the store but when we couldn't find them on the shelf, Danielle saved the day by offering to loan me the store's cutter. As she handed it to me, the other man that was helping (didn't get his name) finally found it on the shelf. Despite finding one I could buy, Danielle was still kind enough to loan it to me. Having spent so much extra money that wasn't planned on our home project, I couldn't be more grateful to Danielle for helping me avoid yet another tool purchase. Not to mention, this helped solve a pretty big crisis at home today. I'm beyond grateful that I was able to turn my water back on with no leaks. Thank you Danielle. I have only been here a couple of times but each time was perfect for me. I wanted to grow some tomatoes and stopped here to see if they had the supplies I needed and they did! I was able to get the planter box, soil, and the tomato plants. I was able to find the area I needed right away in the store and I walked around a bit to find exactly which items I wanted. The staff asked me multiple times if I needed help and I never felt lost in the process. Checking out was easy and the price was decent. I'm sure if I went to a bigger store I would have paid less but sometimes it is nice to pay for the convenience and helpfulness of a smaller store closer to home. read more

SUCCESS! If you're hesitant to use this store over a big box hardware, don't be. Their selection is actually WIDER. For example, my husband needed sanding belt sandpaper that was 2.5 inches wide. Home Depot only sold it in 3 or 4 inches wide. Lowe's also did not carry it. But this store had the right kind. read more

I imagine this is what a store would be like if the world wasn't so crowded. The people here are friendly, they say HI when you walk in, and actually smile. They don't carry a large volume of products, but they do carry a fairly large selection of many things. You can also find products that the big box stores don't carry, such as specialty grade 8 bolts, certain types of tubing, etc. Their garden area is kind of small, but ok. But the last time I was in, there were only a few dozen plants, and many were wilted. I felt bad for the plants, it was kinda sad. Maybe they need someone to take care of the plants more. Usually it's better. Prices are a bit more than discount stores, but then again it's a local business. I'm all for paying a bit more for that. Sometimes you can find better quality items. For example the fireplace grate was made in USA, and really beefy. I'm still using it after 3 years. The one I got from Home Depot burned up (literally) in less than two months. I found some good US made tools here too. The biggest reason I like this place is that it feels comfortable, un-hurried, yet still has a good selection. read more

It's nice to have a local hardware store. Reminds me of when I would go to the hardware store as a kid with my dad every Saturday morning. I love old hardware stores something about them just reminds me of a bygone era. I'm glad this place is still around. They will always bend over backwards to help you and make sure you have everything you need to complete tour next project. San Carlos True Value Hardware is the definition of a small town-style hardware store. Robert (likely the manager) helped us from the second the doors opened and he gave us 5 options on decorator chain, Animae then cut to the exact lengths that we needed, and Brent checked us out. During our visit, we found dozens of things you'd never expect to find in a store of this modest size and we are totally thrilled to have this better than Home Depot option a short drive away. A good neighborhood Hardware Store. They carry most of the things that you need such as most light tools, light bulbs, weed killer, sand paper, etc. They cut keys and they sell some plants and flowers. If you're going to add a wing to your house, this is not the place, same if you're a major tool pig, but it probably serves 90% of your needs. What I really like about this store is that someone almost always approaches me to ask if they can help me. I don't need to wander around aimlessly like at Home Depot and Lowe's looking for someone to assist me, only to have them tell me that it's not their department. From Builder's Emporium to Petco, to Ace Hardware, to San Carlos Hardware, this place has changed hands so many times! I like the hardware store being just up the street, but the problem is that it closes very early and it's hard to purchase things there when I get home too late after work. Sometimes I'll need screws, or fixtures, or whatever else I need to do my home improvement stuff--and I do a lot of home improvements since my place is falling apart. The prices aren't so bad, and there is a definite convenience factor, but you can't always get what you need at this place and that's a shame. I have been able to find things most of the time, but sometimes I'll need to take that extra drive to Home Depot. It's a good little store though and I hope it stays around for awhile. There sure are a lot of homeowners in our neighborhood that hate driving all the way to the nearest Home Depot to get a hammer, or screws, or rubber washers. Just wish it was open later. read more

PROS I always receive a friendly greeting when I walk in the door. These guys know their stuff and are quick to offer assistance. I really like how there is always someone available to direct me to exactly what I need and help me select the best products or tools for my project. And, they never make me feel dumb despite my lack of home improvement knowledge. I've noticed two great things since I started coming here. (1) I get in and out so much faster because the employees help me find what I need. (2) I make fewer return trips because their expertise helps me get the right products in the first place! Worst customer service I have ever received. This is in regards to the older woman with the long blond hair. I just moved to this area and I am all about shopping local. We decided to stop here to get our keys made. Should be an easy process, right? Nope! I asked for 2 copies of my house key to be made. She only charges me for one, so I have to go back and purchase another. Not a huge deal. While I am purchasing another copy, I hand her back my house key and she goes, Oh so you want this key to be made now? "No, this is the same key." She proceeds to tell me that I handed her a different key and argues with me, telling me I was wrong. I ask if I need to pay for another copy and she aha that she has to check with the manager, even though I am 99.9% certain that I gave her my house key. The whole process takes about 20 minutes. It would have taken me two minutes at Home Depot using the machine. The manager finally comes up and checks the "mismatching" keys, only to realize that it WAS the correct key that was made (yes, my house key.) The woman with the blond hair was very rude for me. I have dealt with such terrible customer service. She told me I was wrong and that it was my fault, when she clearly made the mistake. She did not even apologize. I will never shop here again. I will stick with Home Depot and Lowe's! read more
