Massilia is a gem of a place! We came here after a Grand Performance event. Walked about a block up to Massilia where many of the concert goers were going for an after party. Massilia's ambiance and menu is influenced by flavors of Spain, Italy, France and North Africa. It is a grown and sexy place but with none of the pretentiousness. We were there at about 11pm and it was nicely packed with music playing in the background. Every one from the patrons to the staff were very friendly and had great energy. Our server checked on us regularly and for small talk, he helped me practice speaking French. Mushroom pizza was absolutely delicious as well as the calamari . Overall, I will be coming back to Massilia. I want to try their brunch menu or meet up with friends for drinks. read more

So, ended up here for dinner after seeing the Yoko Ono exhibit across the street. This was a few months ago and I had forgotten about this experience until Yelp reminded me. Walking in, waiting to be seated - took a while. Not knocking anyone because there could have been some issues that were being ironed out. Eventually seated. It actually gets worse ... I wish I could say the service was ok, but it wasn't. Having to wave someone down who isn't even in the area or station my friend and I were seated in - is pretty bad. I wish I could attribute the service to it being busy, but it wasn't. The server was nonexistent. I don't know if it was staffing issue but it was to the point that I know I won't be back. I wish I could say the food was ok, it might have been great. However, when I'm already annoyed because of the service, that bad taste in my mouth soured the food experience. If there's anything you order from Massilia, it should be the seared cod. The fish was flaky and the sauce took the entire plate to the next level. It wasn't too heavy as a lunch item either! I also had their fattoush salad and meatballs - both good, but the cod...... 11/10! I need it again. A group of 7 of us came in on a Wednesday with a reservation; I'm glad I made one as it was pretty busy at noon. I docked a star only because service was a little slow. I consider myself a patient patron but a group of 5 was seated long after us and recieved their food before us (by at least 10 min). I looked over and they ordered similar plates. My friend and I came here for lunch after the DataLand exhibit. It wasn't too crowded on a Friday. The restaurant is open and airy with a nice bar. Initially we were seated at a table with wooden chairs which weren't very comfortable, so we asked to be seated at a table with cushioned chairs. After ordering our drinks, we ordered the crispy calamari which came with lemon and a sriracha aioli. The calamari was nicely crisp and tender. The aioli was a nice compliment to the calamari. I ordered the chicken avocado sandwich on homemade focaccia topped with arugula, olives, tomatoes, capers, harissa aioli. To add fries to the sandwich were a separate charge. Found that to be strange. Fries or a small salad should come with it. Loved the sandwich. Everything was fresh tasting, but I found the focaccia would crumble a bit with each bite. The fries were served hot and crisp. My friend had the burrata, prosciutto, mortadella sandwich. It looked good. She liked here sandwich. Service could have been more attentive and friendly. I went for a pre-show meal that was worth repeating any time! Ambiance is very lively and for those living or working nearby, going to their weekday happy hour would be a no brainer. Started off with crispy calamari, lightly coated with a seasoned batter and served with an excellent dipping sauce. We split the salade verte (green salad) which was lightly dressed with a delicious vinaigrette and even split was a large plate of greens! We opted to share the royal coucous which included an amazing merguez sausage, tender lamb shank, and chicken over a bed of coucous and chickpeas. Plenty of stewed vegetables and a marvelous broth served in the side that we could use as we wished. The meats were all fall off the bone tender, and the vegetables still held some texture (not mushy). Delightful wines by the glass, and because I had no room for dessert, l finished off the meal with poire william eau de vie! Professional and kind service from hostess to waitstaff. Massilia has a really nice ambience, and the noise level was just right--lively but still comfortable enough to have a conversation. Unfortunately, the food was a little disappointing overall. The steak frites was probably the biggest disappointment. The steak was very small and overcooked, especially for what you would expect from this type of restaurant. The pasta also needs some work. We tried the burger and fries, which were okay but nothing particularly memorable. On the positive side, the calamari was good, the Moroccan couscous was really good, and we also enjoyed the meatballs. The lamb shank was another one of the better dishes we tried. I really like the atmosphere, so I would be willing to come back and give Massilia another shot and try a few different dishes. I think the menu could use some updating, and the execution on some of the dishes needs improvement, but there were definitely some highlights. I'd give it another chance. read more

Beautiful restaurant, huge with plenty of seating. They have a parking garage, which also makes it very easy. Service was wonderful, I absolutely loved my merguez sandwich. The flavors were spot on, and I'm always excited to find that since it is not served at many restaurants. The salads and pizzas were also delightful, you really can't go wrong with anything on their menu. The quality is well worth it, everything was perfectly executed and plated beautifully. Ordered delivery, so I can't give an honest review of the service or ambience. It was our first time ordering, we were hoping to find a Napoli style pizza, calamari and ratatouille. First issue was the ratatouille, they did not have it and we were disappointed. Second issue, for the price/value of the calamari, it was not what is considered a "full portion", it was less that 3/4 cup/a little over 1/2 cups. We shared equally and split between 3 people to try, so it was really a few bites. Third issue is the pizza not being cooked evenly, 1/2 of our prosciutto pizza was burnt on the crust edge and underside. The second pizza we ordered, margherita pizza, we only lightly burnt. Finally, we agreed that we do live further away from the restaurant, so the steam from the pizza and calamari were trapped in the containers, so it made the crust and calamari coating soft instead of crisp. Our thought would be, to ask for the packaging to change to allow ventilation. At least to allow the arugula on the prosciutto pizza to not wilt. While waiting for my daughter's jury selection to wrap up, I decided to grab lunch at Massilia Grand, and I'm glad I did. From the moment I walked in, the restaurant felt warm and welcoming. The host greeted me immediately and quickly showed me to my table, setting the tone for a great dining experience. I started with the meatballs, which were cooked perfectly--tender, flavorful, and a great way to begin the meal. My only criticism was the bread served alongside them. It was a bit too hard and didn't really complement the dish as well as a softer, fresher bread would have. For my entrée, I ordered the grilled salmon with mixed couscous and ratatouille. The salmon was cooked perfectly--moist, flaky, and full of flavor. The mixed couscous was absolutely outstanding and easily one of the highlights of the meal. I'm not much of an eggplant fan, so I skipped that portion of the ratatouille, but everything else on the plate was delicious. Since I don't drink during the week, I paired my meal with a lemonade, and it was incredibly refreshing and the perfect complement to lunch. Overall, Massilia Grand delivered excellent food, welcoming service, and a comfortable atmosphere. Aside from the bread with the meatballs, everything exceeded my expectations. Beautiful dining or drinking spot inside the Conrad Hotel. I loved the sheikh modern meets country vibe. Totally elevated for dining but yet delightfully warm and cozy. The drink menu has some one of a kinds like the anchovy martini. If you're into briny drinks, this might be what you need. Standouts for the dinner were: 1. Mushroom and ricotta pizza 2. Salade verte (yes, this is a simple salad but oddly packed with flavor) 3. Fried artichokes 4. Sauce is the best thing in there, meatball tastes like Costco food. Salmon tartare very average as well, not super fresh. Just basic raw salmon with soy sauce and avocado and some garnish. Nothing impressive. Definitely won't come back for food unless everything else around is closed and I happen to be in the block. Nothing to complain about service, it's standard. First time coming here and had an early dinner before my opera visit. I have to say this place is quite nice. The decor is really nice and very inviting. I like how there are lush couch seating all around the restaurant and there's even outdoor patio seating as well. The wide window doors can be opened and closed so that was nice when it got too cold and windy during the evening. As for the food it was quite tasty. We ordered the sausage kale pizza and the crust was perfect. My seared cod over carrot purée and Brussels sprouts was nice. I do wish they would have more Brussels sprouts as I felt the carrot overpowered the dish. The cod was seared nicely and the presentation was nice. Our server was attentive but I felt during checkout he was a bit pushy and wanted to do a quick turnaround of tables. I was taking extra time to double check the bill before paying and he kept coming around asking if I was done. Felt weird. Wasn't a fan of the added spice on top and didn't get baklava flavor coming through. It tasted like a standard espresso latte, so should have opted for that instead of paying for a specialty drink. The interior is nicely decorated with a variety of seatin arrangements. It was hard to tell where the entrance was as there was no sign for Massilia but another cafe. Once seated it took a minute for us decide and once we did our waitress was great. We got an appetizer (chorizo and clam), then got an entree each. I got a breakfast bowl and my friend got the salmon eggs benedict. It did take a while for our food too, about 25mins after our appetizer. The appetizer was nice though it could have been a little more acidic and some of the clams were gritty (not cleaned all the way?). My breakfast bowl was a nice combination of various ingredients, though I discovered the miso tahini sauce very late as it was at the bottom of the bowl and hidden (so asked for some hot sauce as it needed somethingto tie the flavors together). The salmon eggs benedict looked filling and a good portion! However the smoked salmon itself was a little bland and could have been more flavorful. Eggs were were cooked great and potatoes had a great pan fry which resulted in that crunch! The restaurant recently relocated from Santa Monica to DTLA, so my co-workers and I took a break to check it out. The place is spacious and has a small little market area at the entrance. There is indoor & patio seating and plenty of spots at the bar. We were seated at a table facing the window so we could watch pedestrians and cars pass by. Our server was delightful and polite. The perfect pre show dinner. Great service. We let our server know that we had a show to catch and the food was prompt in arriving. The food was also delicious and a great value considering the area! Highlights: mushroom pasta, 50/50 pizza, wagyu burger and thin crispy fries, and grilled zucchini. Make a reservation because it gets busy on show nights! Super convenient choice as it's right across the street from Disney concert hall and kiddy korner to ahmanson and Dorothy chandler at the music center. Parking was $10 flat rate at the music center garage (and we were heading to a show at ahmanson) so it was all a delightful and smooth experience. One thing to call out about this restaurant is that imo it was fairly priced. I checked out Kendall's and Abernethy's and really not into paying $70 a head for what reviewers said was Mediocre food. The plaza grill has smash burgers but I had read someone saying it was dry and disappointing for a pricey experience. Massilia fit the bill across all our needs for classy ambiance, convenient location to theatre, delicious food, fair pricing, and good service. Our server was gracious and thoughtful, and encouraged us to take our time enjoying our meal. Really appreciated his candid recommendations and calm, hospitable demeanor. He helped us decide between various options and we settled on the Moroccan Couscous Royale - an absolutely fantastic dish full of warm spices and hearty portions of Merguez sausage, chicken, and tender lamb on a bed of seven different vegetables and fluffy couscous. We were staying at the Conrad and thought this place would be a more casual option compared to San Laurel. Saw all the great reviews about this place back when it was in Santa Monica, so now that it's in DTLA, we went to give it a try. We came for early dinner and they sat us quickly since we had a reservation. The ambiance was nice and the room was lively. We had a very friendly server, but when he was pouring water he made a big spill on the table. We thought he would come back to wipe down the table since the table is small, which made the spill so much worse. Not sure if they were short staffed that day but we had to ask 3 different people before someone finally cleared the spill. In regards to food, I wholeheartedly agree with a lot of the 2/3 star reviews. I normally don't give below a 4 unless there's something really big to address, but we had one of the most disappointing meals in recent years. While the ingredients were fresh, the flavors were very underwhelming. We got a Burrata Margherita Pizza because we saw the positive review, but after a bite it was really hard to continue. The pizza was somewhat lukewarm since they put cold burrata on a warm pizza. It would've been nice if the burrata was also popped in the oven or alternatively, they could've cooked the pizza a bit more. The pizza didn't have that crisp you want. All that is to say it that we were pretty sure we could make a better one and when you're paying LA prices for food, it's not ideal. We also ordered the Salade Verte with Grilled Chicken. This was a little better than the pizza but it was just a simple salad. No garnish or anything. Super glad we got chicken otherwise it would've just been simple greens. Don't get me wrong, it was a fresh salad and very edible, but when you crave a Trader Joe's salad afterwards, that says something. The saving grace at this place was the White Pear Negroni. Props to the bartender. Had I not gotten this, the meal would have been a lot worse of an experience. This is definitely a drinks place. If you come here for just that, you're most likely good. I'm not sure if this experience is indicative of the restaurant as a whole since the opened not too long ago and I don't wish poorly on them. I do hope they address the food flavors. It seems that they have potential to be a good restaurant. Lastly, they really should put on the menu about the extra 4% charge. The reason they give is due to them being in the building close to all the hot spots. I don't mind paying the fee, but it felt wrong that they didn't disclose it ahead of time and just worked it into the receipt at the end. read more

It's a delicious kind of healthy. It's floral, sweet without being overly sweet, decorated with pretty plating, served with water. Came for brunch today, so this review will be for that. Massilia is located just outside the Conrad hotel downtown, they offer valet for $15 (with validation) or self parking for $4 (with validation). The restaurant is such a vibe, with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The indoor is super open with a very modern vibe that I really liked. We had a larger party and our server was super friendly and accommodating, and all the other staff were quick to bring our food out and serve us. The ambiance and service were both great and standouts for the experience. Unfortunately the food was pretty mediocre, which was a bummer. I got the soft scrambled eggs with sourdough and while the eggs were well seasoned, they were overcooked to the point of being an omelette. The sourdough was also cold, I think it should've been lightly toasted. The salsa that was provided was also very bland, and probably could've been brought up to room temp (it was icy cold so it didn't complement the warm food). The blueberry buckwheat pancakes were also quite bland, and there definitely wasn't enough blueberry compote on them. The yogurt didn't complement the dish either, it would've benefited from some cream vs. the tang of the yogurt. The breakfast burrito was also pretty bland, and suffered the same issues with the salsa. Overall I think this place has a great vibe and solid service, but I don't think brunch is a strong suit. I'd certainly consider coming back for dinner, but won't be back for brunch. read more

Came with friends for lunch before a matinee at the Ahmanson. We sat in the patio on a beautiful day. My friends had Wagyu burgers with fries $22. I had the salmon with ratatouille and rice pilaf $32. I specifically told our server, Forrest, I wanted the salmon to melt in my mouth. He said, "So you want the salmon medium rare." I replied, "If that's what it is, then yes." The salmon came back overcooked. I needed my friends' burger dips to help me eat the salmon. I told Forrest that medium rare didn't help bc my salmon was still overcooked and a little dry. However, I didn't want him to take it back to the kitchen bc I dislike wasting food unless I can't eat it. My friend had asked for mayo for her burger and that was omitted. She had to ask for mayo again. The lack of understanding and follow through in the kitchen was the only con. My friends liked their burgers. I asked what the restaurant did for bdays. Masselia will only supply the candle. We ordered tiramisu $14 for my bday. Another friend who was allergic to nuts, had Forrest combine ingredients from two desserts - ice cream, strawberries and shortbread. It was nice of him to accommodate her. The desserts were delicious! The tiramisu was beautifully decorated with berries, delicious and had a candle on top. Great service in our server Forrest who was accommodating and gave us a 5% local discount. Street parking. Free parking pass in the Music Center lot if you're a CTG subscriber. I was able to get $20 off $60 as an InKind member thru Masselia's website. We'll be back bc the restaurant is convenient and walking distance to the Music Center. P.S. My friend told me the restaurant charged us $1 for the one small candle! Geez. Next time, we'd have to bring our own candles. I discovered this spot after a long morning in court but it's also very convenient to the Broad and the Disney concert hall. The space is beautiful and comfortable with plenty of seating on a large patio space. Breakfast options are served at lunch and I must rave about the breakfast bowl which includes quinoa with roasted chickpeas, a perfectly poached egg, roasted heirloom tomatoes, burrata, sliced avocado, and a slice of multigrain toast with mixed greens. Conveniently located across the streets from major hot spots (Walt Disney Concert Hall, MOCA, The Broad)! There is validated self parking as well as valet. | M E N U | (I came for brunch on a Sunday morning so have only ordered items from that menu + drinks.) Ordered 3 mains + a side of fries + umami martinis. I can't stress enough how yummy everything was! SEARED COD (carrot purée, crispy brussels sprouts, tomato-olive-caper sauce vierge ) The cod was cooked perfectly that it was nice and soft, the carrot puree it sat on was lightly seasoned but in a good way that it complemented the cod rather than stand out in flavor on its own. The capers were an excellent touch as well. MERGUEZ SAUSAGE PIZZA SANDWICH (fennel confit, harissa labneh, greens) My mom said this was so good she already planned to come to LA next week to eat it again lol. MOITIÉ-MOITIÉR ( 1/2 four cheese and 1/2 marinara with cantabrian anchovies) My mom, daughter & I all agree this was great! We're an anchovy eating family and these anchovies were top notch. Not like the ones you get at a dominos or something other. FRIES They're shoestring!! And we all know those are the best kind of French fries. Best part though? The bowl is pretty big for a side -def giving McDonald's a run for the money lol. My daughter wanted to take a side to go! UMAMI MARTINI (gin, vermouth, yuzu, anchovy oil) Alright, I know you're reading the anchovy part and making a face but hear me out first; if you're a dirty gin martini fan, you will love this! It's a very delicately balanced martini with a whisper of the umami from the anchovy oil, a slight tart from the yuzu & the smoothness of the gin combined. I don't think I can accurately describe it but just know it's worth the order (or in my case, multiple orders lol)! | S P A C E | Beautifully designed, open layout with gorgeous furniture & plants! There's a table setting for every mood I swear; bar vibes, date night, brunch, happy hour bites! I also wanna shout out that the sinks are outside the bathroom which I appreciate so much, especially in DTLA. I hate having to wait to wash my hands when there's a line for the toilets. When you first enter there's a cute section of curated drinks, artisanal goods, snacks, sauces & spices! So if you were looking for grab & go goodies, souvenirs or just a treat, you're in the right place. | S T A F F | My guy, Forest, such a gem! Attentive, friendly, and helpful with great recs.
