I have been to Marina Park many times but I only recently found out that there is a dog park in the area if you make the walk along the water and cross over the bridge. I always travel with my dog and I was excited to check it out. Unfortunately, it just wasn't really for us. The biggest issue for me was the lack of shade. It was a warm day in the bay and the entire area is dry, exposed and pretty hot which made it uncomfortable for me and my dog. The walk from the parking area over the bridge and along the water is also longer than I expected. The walk itself is not bad but based on what the park had to offer, I'd rather just walk my dog on her leash around the waterfront. I think there was only one other person that stopped the entire time that we were there and they had a large dog so there was no interaction because the park is separated into small and large dog areas. I think if there had been a lot of other people using the park it might have been enjoyable and maybe there are times during the day when it is busier than others, but everyone I saw with a dog just walked by and I honestly enjoyed walking my dog around the water more than the time we spent in the dog park. read more

Came out at 9:15 AM on a Sunday and dogs slowly trickled in. By 9:30 AM, there were over 12 dogs in the large dog side. There are multiple parking areas a short walk away from the dog park. Keep in mind this dog park is a mix of dirt and grass. Your dog will get dusty. read more

Nice people and nice dogs. The agility equipment is nice but our doggie spent the entire time playing with other dogs. It's a large fenced in area. Water fountain works, it's clean, well-drained, and we had no trouble finding parking. Great place! read more

This is a decent fenced dog park, separated by small or large dog. Great view of the bay to the right, and the golf course to the left. There are built-in obstacles for dogs to play around with including weave pole, tunnels, jumps and A frame. Great for those busy dogs to burn off their energy. Rules are clearly marked at front gate (and doors open inward only), with a couple of water fountain for the dogs and one tall one for the human. Length of this dog park is adequate, enough to throw tennis balls for my dogs to fetch and retrieve. We came here over the weekend and surprisingly there were only 3 dogs. I would imagine on a busy day, it could get tight, but the plus side is that you have the option to walk your dogs along the paved trail (with leash) and enjoy the bay views. Note: There are parking either on the sidewalk or the parking lot. We lucked out and found one at the lot which is the closest to the dog park (which is about half mile walk). Cheers! read more

My experience here has always been wonderful! Located at the marina park, I have been bringing my pup here since she got fully vaccinated and dewormed at four months. She is now almost 1, and we have been coming frequently several times a week, or at least once a week. I love this place! First of all, the views are unbeatable. Second of all, there is so much space for her to run in the small dog area. For the most part, people are respectful of the size separations, I've never had any trouble with dogs of different sizes mixing and creating a dangerous situation. From my experience, almost all owners have been incredibly responsible and make sure their dogs are well behaved. If there is any tension, the other owner, and myself, will immediately approach the dogs to separate them. People are very mindful of their dogs and pick up after their dogs. I have even made several friends coming here! People were so friendly and gave me tips as a new dog owner, and recommendations of local areas to take my dogs. From my experience, if you are friendly and mindful of your dog, people will be that way in return. If at any point I feel like my dog is being put in an uncomfortable situation, I just separate her or we leave. Luckily, this has rarely happened yet. There was one time where a dog was humping all the other dogs and the owner didn't seem to care, but I protected my dog by walking over, pushing the dog off, and separating her from this dog. read more

Updated review - I recently stopped by and saw that all of the grass with foxtails has thankfully been removed. What is left is a nice sized dog park. I wish they could spare a bit of resources they use to maintain the beautiful acres of grass in the park next door and bring it to this dog park, but alas, it is a dirt pit. I like this park, nice views, and decent amenities. Though it can be windy sometimes. Parking can be hard to find on weekends. PS. Be wary of non socialized dogs and ignorant owners. I almost got into a fight with an older man who brought his 2 years old poodle to the park. He was so protective of it and wouldn't let it socialize that HE got defensive. My dog wanted to greet the poodle and he hit my dog. I got into his face and if his daughter wasn't there I would've messed him up really REALLY bad. I was that heated but I chalked it up to him not knowing anything about dogs... I've been to many dog parks in the east Bay Area and I noticed more ignorant or less socialized dogs tend to come here more than any other dog park I've been to. read more

I don't know if anyone will actually do anything with the reviews made or if others even yelp dog parks to take into consideration. This dog park has potential to be something really awesome, most dog parks is just a gated field but this one has obstacle course stuff for the dogs and benches/tables for the humans. I don't normally see this at other dog parks I've been to. The down side is there is a lot of dog poop around that people just don't clean up after themselves (? This is why I'm not sure whether to even say anything because that's more on the people who visit rather than the place itself). However, I do mention that all the grass areas around the dog park are nice and up kept but the dog park grass is dead. Just confused why the whole park and golf courses around the dog park were up kept why not maintain the small dog park right next to it too? I sound like I'm complaining about the park, but besides those two points (the poop and dead grass) I thought the park was pretty cool and lots of dogs come so when you visit your dog will have friends to play with. For COVID purposes I recommend to bring gloves/hand sanitizer/wipes with you for opening the gate which you have to touch in order to enter. read more

This park is terrible. It shows neglect on the park of the city of San Leandro, and indicates that they do not hold dogs nor their owners in high regard. I have spoken to other owners who tell me they simply walk their dogs in the actual people part of the park where picnickers are, there is grass, etc. This is a prime spot for a dog park but San Leandro should go check out the Foster City dog park to get an idea of a great facility. read more

Update... Coop ended up with a 320 dollar vet bill antibiotics, pain meds and a prescription cream. We are 2 weeks later and still dealing with these injuries healing. The city never followed up with me as expected. Seriously Do Not Go Here! I still feel awful for my dogo and that this happened. This is the worst place I've ever taken my poor boy. I'm infuriated this place exists and that the city was alerted and couldn't even follow up. I followed up myself with a message and no response. Thankfully we are fortunate enough to have the kind of funds to deal with that bills without an issue... But I know that there are many that are not especially in these times with Covid. read more

Very large dog park. It was clean and in a nice location at the Marina. Parking is a bit challenging but if you keep looking a spot can be found. The surface is some kind of dirt or sediment but it did not get all over the place as I thought it might. It would be nice to have more shady spots though. My first time at this park and it was beautiful. The dog park was great until a man came up to us and was rude. I never like going to dog parks and this was the very first time our new puppy went inside a gated dog park. There's two sides to every story but I'd like to share my experience. I know my puppy and what's best for them so for someone to come up to us and point fingers at us was infuriating. Let me paint the picture ~ We went inside the gated dog park along with our family's dog which made it a total of 4 dogs. Everyone was doing great and socializing. We loved all the dogs and the responsible owners who helped make us feel comfortable being there. Eventually, we pulled our puppy aside where we were further away from the group of dogs as more people were coming in. We wanted to let him off leash but after being there for some time we realized it was best for us to let our family's dog finish playing and getting his energy out before leaving. Then, we were giving our dogs water. Eventually, a dog approached our puppy which we're fine with but noticed that they didn't really want to play with them but we still told him to be nice and easy. The other dog was still in our puppy's face even though our dog clearly wasn't interested. We were literally just standing there on the side furthest away from the action and it worked fine where many dogs came up to say hi and continued to run back to the other dogs when they wanted to play. Anyway, the dog kept trying to get to our puppy and the dog was not listening to the owner. I didnt have an issue with it because these things happen. The rude man came up to us to get his dog who did not do well with recall at all and had the audacity to ask if our puppy was aggressive and that we aren't allowed there if we have a leash on him. Normally I wouldn't mind if someone said that to me but it wasn't right for someone who's unable to control their own dog to say something to me. We took ourselves out of the situation by leaving as the rude man was still trying to leash his dog as the dog was now going after our family's dog who also did not want to play with them. I'm thankful nothing terrible happened but no one needs to act like this especially when they're not being responsible themselves to maintain a safe environment for everyone. read more

Still a great Park. Probably the best anywhere around the San Leandro area. However, the Foxtails are starting to spring up again which was the major problem why no one went to the park prior to the upgrade. I still rate the park along a 4-5 star park. However, I am rating this update a 1 for visibility. As of late, this Park has grown in popularity. With that, there are a ton of visitors now especially with the great weather. With more attendees, you have more clueless or ignorant visitors. Folks, if you have a large dog, stay in the large dog area. DO NOT take your LARGE dog in the Small dog area because: 1) You do not want your LARGE dog getting harassed by other Large dogs 2) Do NOT use the Small dog area as your great escape or paradise away from other large dogs. 3) Get a smaller dog next time? 4) Just because your LARGE 30-40lb dog is still considered a "puppy", this does not make them a Small dog. So you have no reason being in the Small dog area with your gargantuan beast of a dog. 5) If your Large dog is in heat, and do not want her attracting other large male dogs. Do not go to the Small dog section thinking you have the perfectly fine reason to be in. No, just dont go to the park. Consider a private walk with your dog that is in heat who is releasing pheromones to attract other dogs. The dog park was meant for your dog to socialize, taking your dog to the park expecting to not have any other dog socialize with your dog who is in heat is a damn oxymoron read more

My girlfriend and I took our pup here on Saturday. I would not recommend this dog park. Firstly, parking was a nightmare. I suppose that's understandable because it was a warm Saturday in the summer, but that was still unpleasant. Be prepared to either wait for a spot to open up in the lot next to the dog park, or to park a ways down the road and walk. Secondly, the ground in the park is a mix of dirt and rough, sharp gravel. Not the most inviting or comfy for paws. Lastly, and most importantly, there were foxtails EVERYWHERE. My girlfriend and I spent 10+ minutes removing them from our pup's coat after he was done playing. Definitely not going back. read more

For whatever reason, my dog gets the CRAZIEST zoomies here. She'll run for DAYS here, but when we take her to Central Dog Park in Fremont (our usual haunt), she doesn't run nearly as much. No idea why. Maybe it's the expansive view of the bay right next to the park fence? I agree with everyone when they say that the views here are GORGEOUS, but it's almost always a little chilly because of the breeze off the water. There are two separate parks for big and little dogs with limited seating and a water fountain on both sides. However, I wish there was less gravel/dirt here. The grass is almost nonexistent and honestly could be called weeds more than grass. The biggest concern is the golf course right next door. There's only a chain link fence separating the golf course from both parks, and it wouldn't take much for a golfer to hit a ball over the fence and brain a dog. I have yet to see it happen, but I don't come here very often. I don't often see a lot of dogs when I am here, but I tend to take my pup to Central Dog Park in Fremont because the big dog park has turf instead of grass (huge perk), there's usually more dogs, and it's not as cold! San Leandro Dog Park is the dog park I take my dog to when I need her to burn some energy but am not able to take the time to get her into Fremont and back. read more

Not a bad dog park in that it is about a 1/4 mile long (for the big dogs) and has an entrance on either end. What bothers me is a problem with other large dog parks throughout the East Bay...some of the owners bring aggressive dogs that should just not be in dog parks to begin with. These dogs are young, unsocialized, and dangerous. They are often large and the owners often seem oblivious, stupid, ignorant, belligerent or all of the above. Today my black lab was attacked by a Rottweiler as we entered the park. Luckily I had her leash still attached and could pull her out of it and into the protected area, but it was unsettling. My dog did not suffer and injury and the owners seemed clueless as to why this happened and tried to blame me for not releasing my dog off her leash upon entering the park. I'm not going to judge this owner but let's just say this is not the model of a responsible owner. I heard others comment about "that damned rottweiler" as well. Dude, take your dog home if that happens. Inexcusable. YMMV. read more

I went on a saturday and it was not crowded at all. I liked using this large park as a controlled area to practice recall with my dog. I can see people's issue with the gravel but I visited in march and there was a fair amount of grass growth on the sides. If your dog loves water, be careful for all the puddles after a large rainstorm. This poor owner's lab was going crazy in the puddle it found. read more

It breaks my heart as I write this review. We've been going here with our three dogs practically since it opened. In the last year it's been a rough trip. I am a lifetime dog person, I do NOT neglect my dogs in any way, and would never try and leave my dogs in harms way. it started about 6 months ago when one of my dogs had been uncharacteristically lethargic. It happened moments after we arrived home from the park. (We live VERY close by). We didn't really give him any food or treats out of the ordinary. But luckily he snapped out of it late that evening. So we thought nothing about it. Fast Forward to a little over a month ago, immediately after going to the park, our dog, Vinny started vomiting then had a seizure for the first time in his 3 year old life. They ended up being clusters of seizures, so by the 5th seizure in 3 hours time we immediately brought him to the Emergency Vet (BAVS). They couldn't pinpoint the cause, but it could have been something he ate....We fed him nothing out of the ordinary. We feed our dogs Premium Dog Food (Taste of the Wild), rarely give them table food, and minimally give them doggie jerky treats. We thought maybe, maybe not from the park then...? Vinny was then put on a Phenobarbital Drug routine. He became blind on one eye, and started getting back to his normal self, but unfortunately got worse last week. Vinny passed away and is now buried in my backyard. We took another trip to the dog park, and another one or our dogs got sick immediately after going there. We had to bring him to the vet for constant vomiting and nausea. Vet luckily took care of him. He's good now. I may be wrong, but it's just TOO coincidental for this to happen to not ONE, but TWO of my dogs...getting sick immediately after our trips to this dog park. I don't want to tell you that the park MIGHT have done this to my dogs...but I don't want what happened to my canine babies happen to yours. It is rocky, it is filled with weeds, and could use more poopie bags (even though I bring my own). The view is breathtaking when the sun is setting, or on a misty, foggy morning when the Bay looks like an infinite pool of serene water. I was SOO happy when they built this Dog Park, but I'll never set any of my dogs' feet inside those gates again. Just a walk in the trail will do...Even as much as they whine and whimper when I walk them past this part of the park. If you still bring your dog, I hope nothing happens to your dog. If you had encountered anything similar to what I had at this park, please PM me. I really hope I'm wrong. Suggestion for the City of San Leandro: Lay some pet friendly Turf in the dog park area. Easy to clean you could rinse it using a sprinkler system at nightfall, and easy on the paws. read more

HEY MAN. You built a dog park right alongside a golf course with nothing dividing it but a chain link fence. There were no dogs but I let the little ones roam free figuring it would be super unlikely any of us got hit by a golf ball given all the space there was and there were only a few golfers out. NOPE. Little Gizmo got hit by a golf ball and the poor guy was in shock. I think it hit him in the side of the ass so he's fine but it had some serious speed and would legit have concussed either dog or myself if it hit any of us in the head. I count myself lucky but this is a shitty gamble to take and after not 15 minutes there we lost the gamble and nearly hospitalized my poor little dude. Also the ground is gravel which sucks for dog paws and there were no poop bags. Major shame this place is poorly maintained AND hazardous because it's right on the water. Got lucky this time my dog seems fine but I defffffiiiniiiteelllyyy won't be back here. Totally not worth the risk to you, your kids, or your dogs. read more

Well it is what it is and with that said I will explain... It's small compared to other dog parks. One section for the little mutts and one for the BIG dogs. There is not much seating for the humans being caged in with the K9s. Water fountain in both sections. There is a few patches of grass and gravel. The small dog area is small compared to the big dog area. The big dog area is double the size. It is better than nothing. I guess being in SL we should be happy to have something. On the bright side: Has a view of the water and golf course. It is less than a 1/4 mile from the entrance of the walk way. Not busy when I have been there or maybe people leave when they see me coming with my two beasts :) read more

I'm giving this fairly new dog park one star for the location and use of space. It is located on the Bay Trail just across the bridge from the Marina Park. The shoreline setting, next to the water is quite scenic. It looked like a doggie oasis from afar, but as often the case, this oasis turned into a mirage, it was only an illusion. This nice sized park is divided into a big dog area and small dog space for dogs up to 25 pounds which is always a good thing. There are shade structures and a few park benches in each area. There are garbage cans but I didn't notice any dog bags dispensers. I didn't look closely since we bring our own. Unfortunately this dog park is not maintained properly; possibly not at all. The surface area is mainly rocky, not small gravel but good sized rocks. This is not a comfortable surface to walk on for paws or feet. On the small dog side (we didn't observe the big dog area) there is a great deal of weed growth and long grasses. One particular weed is the one that has a sticker that looks like a wire cork screw and is impossible to brush out of a dog's coat. We spent a good 2 hours picking stickers after our visit. This is not fun for dogs, nor humans. We have visited many city run dog parks around the state and understand budget restraints but it would not take much manpower to improve this park's conditions. I am "pawsitive" that the San Leandro Dog Park could be a very nice place to enjoy off-leash fun if the city took the time to maintain it properly. read more

This dog park is what I expect from a dog park. Not big enough? The large dog park is plenty big for my 75 lbs lab and several more his size. The park is probably 500ft long by 50ft wide. The park has a covered picnic table and 3 open benches on he large dog side; always plenty of seating. The park is never too crowded and most people have been very friendly. Actually I've only seen on dog/owner who weren't super well behaved.(I go 3-5 times a week.) All entrances into small or large dog area area double gated! Perfect. Views are not to be beat! No grass? Too many rocks for your poor doggies feetsies? Good, keep your entitled dog out of this super chill place for dogs; to ACTUALLY run as far as you could throw and run almost free. read more

I commend SL for doing this. It's nice to have something close(r) to home than Castro Valley, or Alameda (superb) or Chabot. So for that reason, I don't mind it. However, if you expect well trained dogs that aren't aggressive, or owners who don't let their mutts fence fight or attack yours, don't go here. Just don't. Also no one picks up their dog's shit. Sorry to say but it's fallen victim to SL's "ghetto" folks---the pet owners who own yard dogs and rarely take them out; house pets who can't behave in public because they've never been trained, and out-right morons. Out of all the times I've gone, I've had two good visits: once, when no one was there, and when a bunch of well-informed small dog owners were there in the early evening. It's so frustrating to come here and then fight off 10 other cars for the last parking spot in the lot or park like a mile away. I wish there were an easier way to get here but we can't find it. I don't recommend this park for dogs with long hair. I took my fur baby there for the first time and I had to pick out weed prickly balls from her paws. Awful!! Either have real green grass, not weeds or have artificial grass for our fur babies to run and play on. I used to live in the Pinole area and would take my 35-40 lb dog to socialize with bigger, older dogs since she's still a pup. It was great socialization for her. Unfortunately I don't get the same opportunity here. No dogs. Ever. A few early mornings but never around 8-10 am during the week. And must have come at an off time during the weekend. I DO see however people WALKING their dog PAST the park. There are never any waste bags, also. But that must be because no dogs ever come. How can my dog learn to behave around other dogs without any dogs? So disappointed in this dog park. read more

I probably should have read Suzy's review about the rocks. She was right. I carried my poochie from place to place at some point cause I didn't want her underside to get scratched.
