I thought that San Mateo Auto Sales - in particular, their lead salesman, Ranulfo Alvarez - were an excellent and professional local business and I was happy to support them. Purchased a 2011 Ford Fiesta off of them for $4500. Just to put this in perspective for you, I am in my early 20s paying rent on my own and this was my first car purchase EVER. $4500 was ALL of my savings that I have collected painstakingly over the last 5 years. In fact I had to borrow $500 from my parents but I trusted Mr. Alvarez and San Mateo Auto Sales so much from their seemingly caring customer service that I thought it was such a good deal that it was worth it. Well, less than a week later, the engine CATCHES FIRE on the freeway, putting me and my passengers in serious danger. I took it to the mechanic - engine was barely limping along with 0psi on all but one test. I was livid. Clearly they were aware of the problems this car had before they sold it to me. I tried to call Mr. Alvarez to give them a chance to make it right, but all I got was a game of phone tag for a month before finally cornering him on the phone for 20 minutes of awkward excuses and "Um let me call you back" s before they finally just ghosted me altogether and refuse to return my calls. They are a SHADY DEALERSHIP and you should TAKE YOUR BUSINESS ELSEWHERE if you care about your money at all. The repair shop gets the car ready for sale based on Ca guidelines. The shop backs their work. 120 point inspection. They now give all their cars a 3 month 3k warranty!! My first car had some issues 2 months after purchase. They replaced a battery for me and did an alignment. They go above and beyond to help. Even tho my car is AS IS and the battery was fine when I bought the car. I also purchased a extended warranty. I have used it only once on my first purchase. Fito and his team are incompetent and a straight headache. I cannot believe the hell hole they put me through after selling my car to them. After completing all paperwork and transferring liability I had to pay for toll charges they racked up over a year and a half until they finally decided to transfer to the new owner. I battled with them for months and they were not helpful. Called and showed proof to toll that I had sold the car. They put me in a gray area that nothing could be done except by the dealer and they didn't. Fito had the audacity after the year and half passed to reassure me everything would figure itself out and I would no longer have to worry! He sold me a silver 2005 Honda Pilot EXL with about 90k miles on it, on Superbowl Sunday (I think it was Seahawks vs. Broncos). This was the car my wife wanted and she loves it. I was kinda sketchy at first since it was a small dealership and what he told me about how I only qualified through one bank, but he was right I had a few banks send me the denial letters. He also, gave me a week to find another bank to see if I could get a lower interest which I did (Pacific Service Credit Union - got me 2.24%) and offered me some great warranty packages. I was in the process of leaving the US and although I had paid off my car loan, the title was stuck in "bank processing limbo." Other dealerships wouldn't help me because they couldn't get a payoff letter, but San Mateo Auto found a more creative approach and took the car off my hands so that I could leave. What's more, my flight got cancelled and I found myself stuck in the Bay Area for a couple extra days without a vehicle (and daily rentals at SFO were in the neighborhood of $150/daily for the smallest car), but San Mateo Auto helped me out with a loaner car. I highly, HIGHLY recommend not to bring your business here unless you're looking to be unpleasantly surprised with their lack of quality customer service and if you're in the market for an over priced lemon. I can assure you that their one month or 1,000 mile warranty is just enough time for your beautiful lemon to get out of their hands. They will take no responsibility for anything. My first experience there I was met by your typical used car salesman but very friendly and eager to get me in the driver seat. I fell in love with the car even though they weren't very willing to budge on price after I had pointed out that their local mechanic who was supposed to do a break job had only done a pad slap and one of the tires had illegally been patched on the sidewalk, which is a big no no in the car industry, but I let it slide because they assured me that the car was in great condition and had just been fully inspected. 2 months down the road and about 2,000 miles later my motor had a catastrophic failure where the head gaskets blew. I called the dealership and anyone I talked to on the phone took no responsibility for the mechanical error so I took it into my own hands to go to their mechanic who had supposedly inspected the vehicle very recently just to find out that they hadn't done an inspection since the beginning of January of 2016, I purchased my vehicle late December of 2017. Instant red flags. Now I am dealing with the fact that they had purchased my old vehicle as a trade in and was told I didn't have to worry about a thing once I signed the release of liability. I've now signed that paperwork twice because they had lost the original copies and 5 months later I am still receiving letters from DMV regarding my old vehicle letting me know not only do I owe for registration but I now owe a late payment fee. DO NOT PURCHASE A VEHICLE FROM THIS CAR LOT!!!! I traded in my old car for a car from this car lot and they completely screwed me over. I turned in a 2010 vehicle in very good condition, the car ran like a dream, but I felt it was time for an upgrade as my old car didn't have a display screen, sunroof, etc. I ended up trading it in for a 2011 vehicle and all is well until I take the car home, which started displaying a light saying increased battery discharge, meaning the battery was bad. I take it to my local mechanic who informs me that this car has multiple problems, including oil leaks, cracked bushings, etc. Basically, I bought an 11,000$ car and find out it needs $2k of work done to it. Turns out the car has even more problems after I realize it still isn't running properly, so I take it to the mechanic who says there are more oil leaks, another $3000, very far into the car so the leaks are hard to get to. The car was also listed as having features like parking sensors, and it does not. The people selling cars at this lot are shady and deceptive. Do not buy from this car lot unless you want to spend way more money than you expected to. I was told that they wanted to assure they were selling me a car in great condition so they took it to a mechanic, who must have not been a real mechanic considering he missed about 7 things that were going wrong in the car. I would do anything to get my old car back which I turned in with zero mechanical problems but unfortunately it's too late. Absolute hassle....What I thought would be a quick easy process I was sent jumping through many hoops. My biggest issue is the car I bought said "this car is approved for warranties" so I made the deal to purchase the car with it, signed the contract and back home I go. I'm from Modesto and drove out to San Mateo to get this car, a week goes by after purchase and was very concerned how many companies were running my credit. I get a call saying I can not get approved for the loan with the warranty...so they gave me an option to purchase the warranty with 10% down of the cost and 12 months of payments no interest on top of my car loan...I really wanted the warranty so agreed...couple more days go bye, my credit was ran three more times and then got a call saying I will not be approved for that loan either, after a small discussion I decided to buy the warranty out right...I planned a whole Saturday to drive back out there to get a call AGAIN After I was already half way to the dealership that now my car is not available for ANY warranties and there's no way for me to purchase one. I had to drive all the way back out to San Mateo to have a whole new contract written up even though we had an agreement...only reason I jumped through so many hoops was the fact this was the car I had been looking for. I spent 7 hours at this dealership on the day I was purchasing my car just to be told I needed to get all my info again for the second contract...that would of been fantastic to know before hand since I left my proof of income at home with all of the other needed information. After many trips to the bank, driving back and forth to San Mateo and being told things were available and then switching it to "nope can't help you" I will never deal with this dealership again. Only reason for the two stars is the fact the sales guy left me alone to check out the vehicle. If something isn't available for a vehicle DO NOT ADVERTISE IT!! They should have known if warranties were available especially when it's been sitting on there lot for 5 months! Bait and switch tactic, a lot of hassle, credit over ran, to many sales lies and nothing but stress. I can't say that this is true of all their salesmen, but the one that I was dealing with was the stereotypical car salesman who tries to hide things about their cars and intimidate you into buying something you're not comfortable with. He literally gave me the line, "Show me the cash. Money talks." He tried to get me to agree to buy if he showed me the Carfax and it was clean, before I had test driven or seen the Carfax.
