This place is very reasonable and location is near to a beach and shopping center. The rooms are very clean and you can tell they take much pride on how they prepare the rooms with practically every looks new and they use good materials. Went on a trip with my Fiancé to see the Aquarium. The Inn appeared nice enough from the outside. Upon entering our room we were overwhelmed with a heavy, musky, odor. We decided to leave the windows open while we ran some errands in attempt to air it out, because it was pretty strong. It never went away. Everything else seemed adequate. On the first night we slept with a very heavy blanket that we brought along, separating us from the sheets. The next night, I fell asleep on top of all the sheets and blankets, and my fiancé fell asleep underneath all of them. Sometime after midnight she woke up, and to our horror, discovered she was COVERED in bed-bug bites. We packed up our things and decided to make the drive home in the middle of the night, rather than potentially take the bugs to another room or hotel. We went to the front desk, showed them a few of her bites (he wasn't very interested in them), and asked for a refund. After trying to talk us into staying in a different room, we were finally given half of a full refund. I was furious, but I was sick of arguing with him and my fiancé was obviously very physically uncomfortable, so I took what he would give me and left. We got home between 3-4 AM. At this point she was having a full on allergic reaction to all of the bites. To add insult to injury, it was my Fiancé's birthday. I called the Inn the following morning to ask if we had mistakenly left medication there in our haste to escape. We have never forgotten that medication anywhere, ever. It's for my Fiance's Auto-Immune Disease. Of course, in our haste, we forgot it. The Inn keeper told me I could pay UPS to come pick it up... Then he proceeded to lecture me with some story about not being able to find bugs in the room. As if it's relevant to me now, as if we were lying, and as if I wanted to drive home in the middle of the night and spend the entire next day hunting down medications and washing all of our belongings. I know that bed-bugs happen. My fiancé is getting better and using a prescription Cortisone cream now because the bites are, without a doubt, bed-bug bites. But the point is, the aftermath and hassle of trying to at least get a full refund was completely inappropriate, especially considering that bodily-harm was the reason for our dissatisfaction. One of the worst places I've stayed at. For the price that I paid definitely didn't get the quality or service that I expected. We checked in late last night at 12 AM and were sleeping comfortably until the people next door began banging on their own door cause they locked themselves out. Not sure why the front desk didn't just give them a key but the people who run this place allowed them to bang insistently. Then two more guys showed up to calm the girl down and they proceeded to yell at eachother and chat loudly outside our door. I'm usually a really heavy sleeper but they woke me up and my whole room. I was too tired and sleepy after a 9 hour drive to do anything and after a longgg while of just listening to them talk cause I can hear everything they say I decided to call the front desk. Anyway damage was done. I book a hotel so I could sleep at it which I couldn't So now I hate myself for booking this place. This hotel has the thinnest walls and doors so if you want to hear every thump and bump then I promise you you will. You hear people walking up the stairs etc. Front desk people don't seem to care to take responsibility for anything. The breakfast food is whatever. Not staying here again and definitely wouldn't recommend anyone else to. read more

Recently stayed here as me and my daughter were in town to attend her freshman orientation at CSUMB. This was one of the cheaper options on hotels.com and since we were only staying one night it was the obvious choice for me. Pretty easy to find located very close to the freeway. Check in was pretty fast. After we checked in me and my daughter put out bags on the bed and left immediately to go eat etc. side note we ate at a restaurant next door Gustos and it was super delish!! Def worth a try! After dinner we went to cannery row and that is when the hotel called me and said they gave me the wrong room and can I come back so they can switch it. I was super annoyed because we hadn't planned on coming back yet and we weren't close anymore. I told them to move my bags for me since we hadn't unpacked anything. I was pretty annoyed that they didn't just let me keep the room since they made the error not me. They were not going to let me keep the room as it was already reserved and they were sold out. They were not going to offer me anything due to the inconvenience, I had to ask them to do something to make it right. In the end they gave me $10 off the room. The rooms appeared clean and have been updated at some point recently. The room they moved us too was not as nice as the first one. The bed was caving in and was extremely squeaky. The tv volume would not go up at all no matter what I tried to do so no tv. The shower was leaking so bad I had to tell them so they didn't think I did it. All in all not a bad place to stay if your just passing through or staying for a night. read more

Here's mine for what it's worth. My husband and I arrived yesterday at about 3:45. We had spent 3.5 hours driving to a friends 80th birthday party. We had made reservations so we wouldn't have to make the long journey back home after the party ended. (day time party, over at 3:30). When we arrived, we were tired, got into our room which smelled like an ashtray covered up with some type of odor control. HORRIBLE smell. The furniture is old and funky, the bathroom had a handicapped shower, where the mold and mildew had taken over between the shower pan and the floor. We took a short nap, where something electrical kept going on a off keeping me awake. Finally at 5:45, we headed home. No refunds at this place. I can understand why. $152.19 later. read more

For the value, this was a great place to stay. My wife and I booked this place as a good midway point on our Hwy 1 drive from Santa Maria to San Fran. This place was cheap and did the trick. It's really easy to get to off the highway. We checked in without a problem. The rooms, especially the bathrooms, are nicer than you would expect from a little motel. They have done some work lately that was worth it. I read the review from Shanon, and she was right on. Only downside was the breakfast was pretty bad. Nothing fresh, just bread, waffles and more bread. No fruit or anything. That said, my wife and I ate at the tail end of the breakfast hours, but don't plan on a great continental. read more

You get what you pay for ... The room was about 50 bucks a night in a sketchy part of seaside . Your walking distance from beach . The rooms are very deceiving , the appear to be clean , somewhat remodeled and they have good channels on the tv . They have free breakfast , waffle maker , muffins cereal juice the works . sleep tight don't let the bed bugs bite .... I have never had such a bad experience with bed bugs in my life . I woke up in the middle of the night because I was itching I pulled back the covers and I thought there was ashes in my bed from smoking earlier so I brushed them away and went back to sleep . Oh they weren't ashes ... I woke up an d had bites covering my face , legs and arms . They were feeding on me all night I don t even know how I slept threw that . I didn't bother going to the office I payed 50 bucks and I know the drill they offer you anther room which is most likely invested as well . Ill never stay here again . Very mixed review. We came in High season, so of course paying almost $200 for the room was overpriced. Pros: -Parking accessible and FREE -Bathroom and shower was CLEAN (very important) -Front desk clerk was very nice and accommodating Cons: -The flat sheets had multiple stains of varying variety. Tossed them on the floor and couldn't use them -Breakfast room/what doubles as the check in area is tiny and only accommodates about 1/10 of the hotel capacity. We had to forget the complimentary breakfast and go down the street to Red's donuts. -WIFI very slow (though this is common most hotels I stay) -window in bathroom and (balcony??) presented questionable security issues All in all the room is okay if you are just sleeping, showering and packing up. Its in the middle of a desolate area that looks uninviting. When I saw the area we were driving through, I quickly started to look up other options. There were no other options so we went in. The place was a lot nicer than we had anticipated. We paid a little more for the king size bed and hot tub jacuzzi in the room. The bed was super comfy and clean and the place was quiet. Finally got a good nights rest on this vaca. Only draw backs were, the location; we had to drive to eat, the back jets didn't work in the spa, there was no clock in the room, the tv remote didn't increase the volume; only decrease, and the night light on the wall switch was ultra bright. Not a 4 star hotel, but for what it looks like on the outside its much better on the inside and the staff is very polite and helpful. read more

I stayed in a room that was almost exactly the same on the Monterey Peninsula at another hotel near the beach that was double the price and it did not have a microwave. There is also a refrigerator. The rooms are not spacious, but the bed was comfortable and the shower was fantastic. Word of warning the marble tile is beautiful, but its freezing in the morning so have slippers or throw down a towel. The TV could have had a better picture, but the channel selection was fine. The kicker is the breakfast. continental... HA!!! They have a waffle maker with syrup and butter that rocks. Several cereals, toast, juice coffee and pastries, your choice... wow getting a little hungry as I write this. Price was fifty dollars or 49.99 if you want to get technical. I knew that Motel 6 was 39.99 and was headed over there. The guy at the front desk took five dollars off the room, but after staying there, I must say i should give then them the five bucks back. I'm more of a hotel type of person, so when I drove to the Sand Castle Inn (booked through Hotwire) I was pretty disappointed with the location and how the exterior of the motel looked. So disappointed that I was going to call Hotwire to see if I can change to an actual hotel and was willing to pay an upgrade. After reading some reviews on Trip Advisor, I decided I would check in and try to give them a shot and I did. I was actually quite surprised. Don't let the outside fool you, the interior was actually nice. The rooms and bathrooms were both remodeled. The bathroom was very impressive! The room had a mini fridge, cable tv and a cozy bed. Through Hotwire, we paid about $43 (including tax). Not bad! We slept well, with no complaints so we decided to stay an extra night. When I called the front desk to ask if we could stay another night, she said "You booked through Hotwire, right?" I had said yes and the woman said that we could stay another night. When I asked how much a second night would be, she asked me how much I paid through Hotwire then started to speak Punjabi to the manager for a good minute or two. She didn't even ask me to please hold, which I thought was rude. I didn't understand why she couldn't just tell me what their rate was. She charged us more, but it wasn't that big of a deal since we paid dirt cheap for a decent room. Another thing: The Sand Castle Inn also has a belgian waffle maker and gives their guests complimentary breakfast (you have to go by a certain time though). I slept in and missed it by 2 minutes. 2 MINUTES...Although the waffle maker was still on and there was still a lot of batter left, the woman at the front desk (same woman) said that we couldn't get any waffles. Everything was still out. It's not like they had put everything away. Whatevs! Again, rude and obviously does not know what good customer service is. Would I stay here again? If I wanted to stay in the Monterey overnight and was on a tight budget, maybe...The only reason why I stayed here to begin with was because we went during a holiday weekend. I went to Monterey for the weekend to visit Carmel and enjoy this lovely coast. I was looking for a clean and affordable room for the night, for 3 people. Sand Castle Inn was exactly what I was looking for: clean room and bathroom, comfortable bed, nice welcoming. First time in my life I see a waffle machine, we made something like 6 waffles in a row! yummy! I left the place very satisfied. I forgot a pair of pants in the room, my favorites one. + 1 star for location, location, location. This place sits right between Fremont and Del Monte streets, two of the largest streets in Monterey. You can take Del Monte directly to Cannery Row, Fisherman's Wharf, Monterey Aquarium, Carmel...pretty much anywhere without having to jump back on the freeway. + 1 star for having a microwave and fridge in your room. It's nice to buy some quick snacks and be able to warm them up in the microwave. There's also a big supermarket and a Target a block away. - 1 star for FALSE ADVERTISING. The pictures show a bathroom with a really nice bathtub. When we walked into our room, it had a shower stall with no tub, and looked like one of those college dorm showers - no door, just a shower curtain. I called the front desk and asked if there were any rooms with bathtubs. She paused and hesitated, and then said "No ma'am, those rooms are all booked." The parking lot is half empty right now (it's after midnight). These rooms are not booked! - 1 star for very very thin walls. The couple next door has decided to be... VERY loving. Multiple times. We can't hear the tv over the noise. We can't sleep. Arrgh. - 1 star for the oddest hot water policy I've ever heard of. Apparently, PG&E has them on a timer and they can't turn on the hot water until 4:30 pm. WTF?? You have to either call and ask them to turn it on for your specific room, or wait until the hot water comes on. Something's fishy here. Wifi is super slow. I had to connect to my phone's hotspot to get this review written. read more

Spiffy little motel! It was easy to find, check-in was quick and easy, and the front desk girl, Chelsea, was super sweet and friendly. The room is spacious. 4 people fit comfortably in a double room. The room comes with a flat screen tv, a desk, dresser, microwave, & fridge/freezer. The bathroom area is very nice, and everything was clean and tidy when we arrived. I took off one star because wifi strength was a tad weak in our room. But that's alright, I'm a patient person. I'm not a high maintenance person, so I'm just fine with staying at non-5 star hotels. When we first arrived, there was a crew that was resurfacing the parking lot, so we actually had to park in the lot just on the other side of the motel lot. No biggie. And when we walked around the pathway to get to our room, the resurfacing crew apologized for the inconvenience. When even the guys who are laying down the asphalt are polite to you, then you know you made the right choice when making a reservation! Location-wise, it's near by to a lot of things. There's a Target & Ross shopping just a few minutes down the road, it's got Starbucks, Jamba Juice, and a bagel spot. Easy to get to from the hotel. As a tourist, this is a plus. No need to drive in circles trying to find things. I love the Monterey area and we would always come up for the MotoGP events at Laguna Seca. Hopefully, they'll bring the race back. When they do, I'll know where to stay. :) read more

The only reason it's a 2 Star is for its location and price and the bed was decently comfortable. The bathroom had black mold around the bath tub and around the door frame from ground up. Very poor ventilation throughout the entire room. Woke up in the morning and the windows were completely covered with condensation. The hair dryer looks as if it had caught on fire. The connection between the tile floor to the carpeted area had no strip to guard from tacks in the carpet so I ended up putting a towel down so I wouldn't get stabbed in the foot anymore. The iron and ironing board were disgusting. The board looked like someone did their makeup or something on it. The iron was black and rough as if it were burnt. I used the microwave and had to stop it because it began to smell like smoke so I was afraid it was going to catch on fire or something. It was an older unit so it definitely needs to be updated. While we were sleeping the fan to the heater would turn on, which was fine because it was set to the thermostat, but when it turns on it is very loud and wouldn't stop rattling. I looked at it the next morning and the cover was broken so there was no stopping it. Just very annoying. The furniture was dated and missing hardware to open drawers. The chain lock to the door looked as if someone yanked or pushed the door in with a lot of force causing the chain base to separate from the wall. This is room 215. Also in another room my friend was staying in, which was a little more updated, but it had electrical burn marks from the outlet in the bathroom. Also there is no breakfast in the office any longer. It's just coffee. I wasn't about to try it though. The machine looked as if it hadn't been used very often. read more

We were so pleasantly surprised by this motel. Th rooms were SO clean and maybe newly remodeled. It smelled so clean we. We walked in and I knew that we were you g to have a nice stay The owner was extremely attentive and he patrolled the grounds a lot. That made us feel comfortable. The beds were very comfy as well. I've stayed here twice in the last year to attend different occasions in the Monterey area and the experiences were quiet different. I found my stay the first time most pleasant of the two with the exception of the room being overpowered with the aroma of ammonia. I stayed in a double bed room at the top corner and the beds were comfy and the room was cozy. However, this second time I stayed in a queen on the bottom floor and the bed wasn't quite as comfortable. The room decor was set about the same, I did enjoy the mini fridge, microwave, and various digital channels. The room had an odd stench of "wet dog" that we smelt throughout the night which was very off putting but we were too tired to make a complaint and feared changing rooms we'd only encounter the same problem! Average continental breakfast with the plus if a min waffle maker plus a juice machine. Staff is mediocre (the man much nicer than the woman). read more

This was my second stay here but might not be a repeat customer. Room was clean and neat. Couldn't get a late check out both times even though I just needed an hour over the regular check out time. I took a survey that was in the room on the snack bar asking me to answer a few questions for free snacks. I did it and grabbed 3 snacks otherwise would cost 5 dlls max at CVS later to find they charged me 20 dlls after check out. That was a complete FRAUD! Very upset for the misunderstanding and the way they had the set up was to completely fool you. BE AWARE!! read more

Pretty good hotel! Our room was clean and smelled nice! It also had a flat scree tv as well as enough amenities for all of us, for example, towels, wash cloths, tissues, & toilet paper. It also included a free continental breakfast! The only real issue I had was the price, we payed $360 for one night which was way over priced, but I believe it may have been due to the Monterey Car Show that was going on at the time. The waffles were a nice surprise. Cereal, toast, and pastries were available, OJ, coffee, tea and Apple Juice! :) It is located in an industrial part of the city, but extremely close to everything. I can't quite give it 4 stars, but it is a great value for the price paid. Very clean, with updated bathrooms -- a decent (smallish) room. No cigarette smell at all in the non-smoking room, and there was a refrigerator and microwave. Convenient location to Monterey, etc. Negatives (but tolerable): slow (very slow) wireless internet, terrible soap (BYO), icky breakfast (no protein, big sticky jar of jam, communal butter container, no fruit). Bring water - the stuff out of the tap tasted terrible and the machine was sold out and ripped me off. I would stay here again. Not much complaints other than Wi-Fi didn't work with our Mac Books at all and breakfast room extremely small, very helpful staff, everything was very clean and organized, Microwave, flat tv, furniture and bathroom updated, close to most of the places on the area, washer and dryer available in case people need to do laundry at all, extra point on that since we were on a road trip yay! We stayed here on 4/2/17 in room 105 and was pleasantly surprised. The dude at the front desk was very nice and helpful. He gave me tons of suggestions for where to eat and when I asked for extra blankets, he brought them to our room. We got parking right in front of our room. We didn't used the TV or wifi. But the one complaint I'd have is that the lighting in the room didn't make sense. The main light by the door was dim. The light by the beds was ridiculously bright. The one light by my bed kept making noise and would turn itself on and it. There was no way to dim them. The bathroom was stocked with large bottles of body wash, shampoo and conditioner. Perfect for people who forgot theirs and none of the items had an unpleasant odor. The motel was easy to find and quiet. We didn't hear our neighbors or anyone outside. read more

For starters, Sand Castle Inn is a budget inn. For me it was both a nightmare and an excellent experience. You may be asking, how can this be? Read on! So I made a reservation online for a room with a double bed. When I and retinue arrived at three o clock in the afternoon, the clerk at the front desk named Lauren gave us the key to room 119, the furthest room. I smelled something fishy already because the place seemed deserted and there were only 3 cars in the lot at the time of our arrival. However, we got over it and went over to drop off our things in room 119. Upon arrival, we were not pleasantly surprised at what we found. In fact, we spent a good minute in the room unpleasantly surprised by the mosquito infestation that we were witnessing. Immediately, we picked up kleenex and began to run around like professional cheerleaders. Of course we tried to kill everything in sight because what we were seeing in this room was an absolute monstrosity. There must have been at least two dozen mosquitos all around. They were small in size and ranged about 1cm but were everywhere, from the floor to the ceiling, windows to the walls, shower to the bed. They were even on our reflections in the mirrors. Indeed, the rest of the 10 minutes we spent smacking everything in sight and jumping around killing mosquitos before we finally remembered that we weren't at home and didn't have to deal with this. It wasn't our problem at all! So we walked back to the front desk and talked to Lauren. At first, she stated that she had no other rooms and could do nothing to help us. However, she walked with us back to the room to check out the situation and ended up upgrading us into a better room. She also went and talked to the maids and told them to go kill the mosquitos. So ends our nightmare inn experience. Thank you Lauren for the good customer service. Now here is the review of the actual room that we stayed in. So Lauren upgraded us to room 101 with a king size bed as well as a hot tub jacuzzi. Other amenities in the room included a refrigerator, microwave, flatscreen tv, and iron and ironing board, dresser and the usual. The room was very big compared to the previous room and was devoid of any mosquitos. I'll take a wild guess here and say that this was likely their best room. It was a beautiful stay and we had a good experience. The continental breakfast was also a good addition. Pros: 1. Clean 2. Comfortable bed and hot tub 3. Spacious (excluding bathroom) 4. Great value because we were upgraded 5. Continental breakfast Cons: 1. Wifi is slower than molasses 2. The soundproofing on the rooms are terrible 3. Tiny bathroom with door won't even open all the way due to bad design 4. Mosquito infestation in certain rooms 5. Too many mosquitos right outside of your door Overall, my personal experience is a four out of five because of the room change. However, without a room change my rating would definitely be as low as it gets. When we first walk into a hotel room, we always pull back the covers on the bed to see the sheets--a tell tale sign of a hotel. These were bright white and clean! The carpets were fairly new. The bathroom was newly remodeled with granite and very clean. The room had a refrigerator and microwave. Overall, a great hotel and just minutes from Monterey and Carmel. read more
