Sandbox VR is a new form of entertainment and I will definitely repeat! At the lobby, the staff gave us the sensor gear connected to our chest, 2 arms and legs. Then we entered a room about 20 x 20 ft, they helped us to put on a VR eye glasses that let us see 360 degrees in the virtual world. The games we picked were resident evil theme which we shot zombie all the way through. I honestly it is much more entertaining than I thought and I genuinely had a fun time. Pros: - The aliens shooting game was fun - Easy to access for newbies - Setup is quick and easy for newbies - The AC bursts in the room is very helpful as you get hit and sweaty while playing Cons: TLDR - Get a receptionist / Fixthe equipment - Staff is very unhelpful. I asked the guy, do I register with you? He just looked at me and said "No". I was puzzled as to what to do next, then I found a friend and he told me to use the tablets. - The equipment is old and janky. We couldn't hear each other properly, even had to stop once. Hence, even the voices in the final video were terrible, else it would have been a reel fun keepsake. I may have even posted on social media, but the in game voice quality is abysmal. - My defender pistol plastic gun kept sticking. Not bad enough to stop, but it meant I couldn't really shoot half the aliens coz it literally wouldn't fire. I gave the person feedback after the session that it may need fixing, he just shrugged his shoulders, said meh and put it back on the rack! - No hand sanitizer post experience! - I wanted to buy water, but there was no one there to talk to and I asked the first guy again. He started disinterestedly saying stuff, so we just noped out. - The game was nice, but there as no way to track enemy direction or get visual cues as to damage you were doing. We played a zombie one that a family member choose. Had a blast but it was sooo hot. Definitely a total workout and would recommend to dress light and tie up your hair in a ponytail for the ladies. Only thing I dislike about this place is there is no restroom inside. It's connected to the mall but once the mall closes there is no restroom access. Our group requested a reservation a week in advance and received an email from her detailing pricing and timing. We made our selection and followed up via email and phone to no avail. The representative who picked up stated that Jenny wasn't there to confirm or book, that no one else was able to book, that they themselves could not confirm because Jenny wasn't there and did not know about any confirmation, and had absolutely no effs to give. I can not describe how surreal of an experience this was. It felt like I was lucid dreaming but fully conscious? I'm sweating after our session and am still processing how crazy it was. I had to close my eyes sometimes with how insane it looked to see zombies running at us. This was for my boyfriend's birthday and we did Deadwood Mansion, and they included a birthday celebration video at the end and sent us recordings for both experiences. I'm so happy with this experience and am now questioning reality. DO IT. Also staff at this location were extremely nice, personable, energetic and passionate about the experience which made it enjoyable that much more. Thank you so much for making it so great! read more

This review is based on their customer service. My friends and I dropped by this past Saturday to see if they had any games available for the current time. We ask the girl that worked there and she replied asking us what we wanted to play. We asked what our options were for the current time. She pointed us to their TV screen with trailers of each of the games and told us to look there. After watching the trailers, we provided her our top choices of what we wanted to play. She then replied and told us to check online and book online. When we checked our top 3 choices online, nothing was available until later in the evening. Why wasn't she able to let us know if they were fully booked for the afternoon or at least check to see if any games were currently open?! Needless to say, we ended up not booking anything with them but with the SF location instead. The staff at the SF location were all much more helpful and friendly! read more

First time trying this. I used to own an Ocular Rift 2 so I had some idea of what to expect. But several technical issues made for a less than great experience When the Star Trek scenario started I had no audio. Why wouldn't they do a quick check to make sure this was working for everyone before it started (like, hey, put your arms up if you can hear this!)? So I put my hands up to indicate I needed help as we were beamed down to a planet (WTF am I supposed to do here without hearing the briefing?). This took about 5 min to fix. He appears to fix it, and then kept futzing around with stuff until I told him that I could now hear things through the speakers. Then about two-thirds of the way through the scenario my screen goes completely black. At first I thought it was because I was dead, but no, another technical glitch. Had to stop it again. The scenario (Star Trek) was okay, but not sure I would do it again. There is a shoot-out late in the session and creatures are coming from behind, but it is pretty random (sometimes there are no creatures coming out from the rear for long periods of time, making me think I am wasting my time with all the creatures coming out from the front). We were told that this is the most guided type of scenario offered by SandboxVR (most of the others are primarily shooters). The storyline was just okay. I liked the way the vibrators in the vests enhanced the experience of being beamed up/down. The resolution of the scenes was lower than I expected. I would have liked to get general strategy tips about how to do this well before starting the scenario. Like: look for opportunities to ask for help from your team if you are having problems resolving issues by yourself). When they are gearing you up for the scenario, you get to a point where you have the headgear on and are completely blind. It would be nice if the people handing you the phasers and tricorders gave you an audio clue that they were handing you something rather than shoving them into your hands And giving you some idea as to when they are officially starting the scenario would be helpful. I thought the first scenes were preliminary (and had no audio for me). If I had known it was starting for real I would have stopped it sooner. The folks that are gearing up the customers are nice, but there seems there are a lot of improvements they could make to make the gearing up and scenario-starting process go a lot smoother. A few comments for people new to this: - while this is not mentioned anywhere on the website, you can wear glasses in the scenario--my friend did it. - before the scenario starts you can store your stuff in a box that is in the same room that you are occupying during the session. read more

You gotta try Deadwood Valley... even if you're not into zombies or games! Went here with some coworkers, and it was loads of fun. - The game itself is *really fun. There were scenes on scenes of zombies in the game, and it had more variety and story than I'd expected. We also had plenty of in-game screams and cries for help. I never realized how much fun a zombies VR game is, when you're defending with friends. I wish there was a melee mechanic for zombies up close. I can see why there isn't: they probably don't want you thwacking other players on accident. - Organizing the experience for coworkers was a breeze. The staff is familiar with and ready for our decently-sized party of 5. The staff was very helpful, kind, and playful -- definitely trust them with the game. They were right that dual pistols with a saw are the way to go! There are some details the staff is confused on: For example, the leaderboard is for individual not team scores, and the total score is the bonus *plus the bottom-left when you finish. This is not a big deal and could be easily fixed with a pamphlet, documentation somewhere etc. - The one star docked is for a bit of disorientation. The IPD is virtually adjusted and a little nauseating at first. After a bit of recalibration, we went through the game perfectly without hitches. This also left some disorientation after we took off the headsets, but all was good after a minute. A hardware solution might remove the disorientation -- not sure, but it was still fun! Would recommend Sandbox VR for a group experience. I'd put it on any list of group activities you're considering. For myself, if I'm ever hanging out with a group of 6 (or fewer, their maximum per experience) for a special day, I'll make sure to come back! read more

The actual game play is fun and is a real good time. However some of the staff at night tend to be rude. Guy charged us more because we were only a group with 3 people and because the game we were playing on a week day. Keep in mind I've done the experience with the same game a different day with same amount of people for a lower price and had great customer service. Overall would still come back just watch out for the guy with the afro who tends to overcharge you at night. read more

This place was really a fun experience! I really didnt think I would have as much fun as I did here! I really want to come back to try the other experiences. So firstly, I did get off on a rocky start here at first. My friends had booked this room for my birthday experience. However, we came with 5 people when we had booked for a room of 4 (up to 6) people. I think there was just a bit of a confusion. Upon arriving, the rooms that could fit up to 6 people were taken. We were no longer able to do our booking for that night unless we wanted to wait until 11:15PM. Luckily, they were able to reschedule us for the following week. That was very nice and accommodating of them and I'm thankful for that! We did the Deadwood Mansion and at first I was super scared. Zombies?! In VR?! Didn't sound like a fun time at first but I was up for the challenge! The workers strapped us up quickly in all of our gear. Once we put the VR headgear, we were immediately immersed! You actually have the gear that you use to shoot the zombies in your hands and everywhere you turn is your game area! The collaboration with your teammates is very much needed and I promise you there is not one dull moment. If you and your group are in it to win it, the whole game is SUPER intense! I obviously cant give away too much but just be ready to sweat LOL and be up for the challenge. Since it was my birthday, they included a fun little birthday surprise at the end!!! That was super fun and a great touch! I wasnt expecting it!! It was basically like a fun little virtual birthday party at the end. On top of that, as soon as we walked out, they already emailed us a little video of our experience! What a great keepsake to take home and watch back to relive the memories! My friends and I (6 people) joined the haunted house VR game on Oct.8. We were all new video game players, so we did not know how to play the game. Eventually the scores were released, and I was at the second place among all the six friends. Sandbox showed us a trailer they made after the game. Everyone was named as 'fighter,' 'exterminator,' or other words to a similar effect. Only I was singled out, being called a 'noob.' We did not know what this meant in the context of video games, so we googled. Then we found out that this is a disparaging term in the video game world, suggesting someone an annoying new player. After the game, I was unhappy about how Sandbox called me in the trailer, and I thought about leaving a one-star review on the same day. Several days ago, I talked to my friends who participated in the game about this, and they supported me to leave a negative review about sandbox. We paid to participate in the game to have fun, not to be humiliated. After all, everyone needs encouragement, let alone those who are new to the video game world. I tried to reach out to Sandbox online before I post this review. Yet, nobody from sandbox reached out to me. There was some lag or glitch on some of my friends gear. The headset was also quite heavy. They also did not turn on the air for us, so we were sweating a lot. This place is so much fun! The staff were very welcoming. This was our first time here and they explained the process and how this worked. We were sold and totally wanted to do this since I am such a big gamer. I saw a few videos of people doing this and I thought this looked so much fun and cool. Anyways, we chose the zombie mansion one and it was amazingly entertaining. We all laughed, screamed, pretended we were all professional shooters. It felt REAL! Like you were in the game. Sad part is, it only lasts for 30 min. You move around a lot and I definitely got sweaty, felt like I was doing a workout. They do sanitize the gear. You do receive a link to a video of your gaming and they are hilarious. I won the MVP which I am so proud of haha. I definitely will do this again. read more

Deadwood Valley (4-player) was so much fun that we went back for a second session (Star Trek Discovery, 5-players) on the same day. The virtual weapons and haptic vests made a huge difference in the immersion, as did the other environmental effects built into the rooms, in comparison to the typical VR set at home with typical Oculus or Vive hand-controllers. Some minor technical issues though--both sessions required a mid-game pause for a battery change or equipment fix. The audio clarity in some of the headsets were temperamental. The play experience was a bit dependent on the attentiveness of the staff in addressing these inevitable tech hiccups. The videos at the end of the session (free) were a great way to share the experience with other friends and family. Check that you get the video link before leaving the premises because sometimes the system does not complete the video upload successfully. Look forward to doing this again when even more games come out. read more

I had such a blast at Sandbox VR- my coworker sis, bf and I trekked all the way to Hillsdale mall (on a weekday) to try our hand at virtual reality. Arrive 15 min early to register, orient with the game staff, and choose your VR adventure. Ours was "Deadwood Mansion," which I already liked the sound of since I have a fascination for scary things. The staff made sure we were suited up in the small bare room that would later turn into a haunted abandoned mansion teeming with blood thirsty zombies and rats. The headgear definitely made everything real and we commenced to protect ourselves and each other from the chaos. We were able to pick our gun and from my VR glasses, we were under attack! You can feel the buzz on our armor when we got hit, we can see the bullets hit the zombie and die, we screamed, rolled on the floor- it must have been funny to watch from the staff's POV. Anyway, we had a blast and they made and emailed us a nice video summary of our experience. Highly recommend for groups for a unique, fun, team-building event. read more

WHEN: Saturday @ 4pm Our large party was late to the reservation, we had a group of 7ppl. The staff recommended to separate to 2 small VR rooms since our party was over 15min late. 4 ppl in one room, 3ppl in the other. Once we arrived, we found one of the room had a VR backpack malfunction for the group of 4. One person had to leave, he was the birthday boy unfortunately and wasn't able to play. The other party didn't want to do the VR anymore so we were able to get the refund. We ended up watching the group play the VR, it was very entertaining. I sat next to the staff who was controlling the VR game, I saw the full screen of the VR game, what the party saw on their goggles. It was so cool to watch it on the other side, the zombie mansion game seems scary though, there are jump scares for sure. Throughout the game, it lagged a lot. You only had 30min to play the game, then 20min or so for instructions in the beginning. A lot of times, the gaming goggles went white, the guns aren't working, it took some time to fix it and the game paused a lot. There were technical difficulties for sure. Be aware of that when you play at sandbox. I highly suggest arriving 15min early n wear contacts if u wear glasses. read more

The fact that I've been to multiple locations and have brought different people with me every time should be enough proof that I love Sandbox VR. I've visited both this San Mateo location and the San Ramon location with friends and family. Every experience has been a great one. We always set a reservation online ahead of time (sometimes even the day of) and have no problems with checking in. You'll pay online about $50. Pro tip - look up promo codes! I've used "WELCOME10" to get 10% off. Upon arrival, you'll sign their waivers and register. Then they'll set you up with an introduction of the gear and how to play. It's always so funny to hear screaming from the other rooms, especially knowing that that's about to be me lol. The Zombie games are the most fun and a little scary at first. I've played 2 player in Deadwood Mansion and 6 player in Deadwood Valley. With 6 adults, it's not a whole lot of moving room but it does feel "safer" against the zombies and as a team, you'll get more kills, thus making you more likely to win. I've also played Amber Sky with 4 players and that was really cool with some unique elements. For example, you'll go on an elevator and there's a few other opportunities for target shooting. After the game, you'll also get two video links so you'll always have a keepsake of the experience. All in all - so fun for groups of all sizes and ages. Watching my parents fumble around fighting zombies and my mom hiding behind my dad while shooting into the ceiling was just the best part LOL. read more

Has a decent experience in the VR, but not afterward. When we finished, I had a text from my bank that my credit card had been used while I was in the game. My card was backward in my wallet when I checked. Cash was also taken from my wallet. The cameras had been pointed away during our session, so that they couldn't be seen. It was my first time doing VR game so I didn't know what to expect. Turned out it was a VR game on steroid as the full set of VR gears were involved. So besides the headsets, there were also the backpack and 4 tracking sensors both hands and feet. The game itself was a shooting game so we were given some guns and rifles as part of the gears too. It was fun especially if you are into shooting games or you like to see yourself in a virtual world lol. If you have a large group, it is of utmost importance you get an exact count and pay the exact number of individuals in advance. I spoke to a staff member on the phone about reserving for up to 12 people for a Saturday, well in advance. I asked if the 2 people who were unsure can pay in person day of reservation. He said yes they could. We originally had two big rooms booked for separate times. Day of, I had friends journey from all around the bay. Some took more than an hour to get there. Some didn't drive and took the train. It was a lot of effort to get 11 of us to be there. And it was for my birthday - the last one I would have in the Bay Area because I'm moving away. It would have been nice to have one last birthday that went smoothly and all my friends could attend. If it wasn't obvious, the person I spoke to over the phone failed to note up to 2 more people were coming day of so their rooms were full. It was not adequately explained to me that the room of 4 was maxed out. The person I spoke to over the phone did not communicate with whoever I was emailing. I was so upset I was shaking when I arrived there. One of my friends had to head all the way home because there was no room for him to play. So disappointing because I communicated so well but their internal team dropped the ball. Carlos, the manager was kind to offer adjusted&discounted pricing for my group to come back and the staff during the experience was a fun pair. The actual play experience was fun but also really fast. My group didn't hear directions and was confused about when to heal so our game was so much shorter than the group of 4. I think we should be able to be given one more chance if we al die and it's all our first time. It is about $60 a person and we played for less than half an hour. I look forward to updating my review when we go again if it is a better experience with booking and customer service. We also now know how to actually play, so we may be able to play longer. I thought this was an escape room experience but as it's a small area you and your friends are in- it's more of a shooting arcade game/plants vs zombies where you defend your base. Cons - need the room cooler as it does get hot wearing all the gear and stressing about playing lol. They had fans but only turned on a few times. - all 6 players make it more crowded in the room but you have more fire power in the game! Location- I think they will move to another part of the mall or expand to be in both areas but double check before you go! As of 8/2019 they are located by door 5, so park near Nordstrom! There is also a bakery near by too. Parking - lots of parking in the garages. It will get full on weekends at the usual times so if you can come early, easy parking! Notes - get there at least 10 mins early. If you're late or it gets held up, it cuts into your playing time. We got our video link pretty fast which included 1 trailer and 1 team video showing scores and our selfie in the game. Decided to take my nephew to something new for his 9th birthday. I would rather give him experiences rather than toys that he will not play with within a week. When you walk in to the place, it looked sci fi. The lobby was big and then there were kiosks of different sizes. It reminded me of Superman's fortress of solitude. I reserved for a party of 4, but last minute my niece decided to play. The problem was that they scheduled a lot of games and the rooms for 6 were taken. We made a reservation for 430pm on a Saturday and when we got there 15 minutes prior, there were quite a few people waiting to either start playing or get their waivers signed. Once we got our waivers signed, we were seated on the side so we could gear up. Gearing up actually took a while, you had to put wrist and ankle sensors, backpack, goggles, and a headset. You're basically put in a huge green room with a giant square on the floor to indicate that you're close to the wall. We ended up doing the Curse of Davy Jones and it was such a fun experience to do with friends! I was so surprised that they send you videos of you and your party afterwards for free! RUDE WORKERS I've been wanting to go to Sandbox VR at the Hillsdale Mall for quite some time now. I booked an appointment, arrived at the location, and was confused on where I had to go to check in. I saw a worker, looking at his iPad and asked him what to do. He COMPLETELY IGNORED ME and continued to check other people in. I was standing RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM. No acknowledgement whatsoever. He could've at least said, one moment OR there's iPads over there to check in. NOTHING CAME FROM HIM. SO RUDE! Whatever. I asked another customer what they did to check in and they told me to go to the iPads over in the middle to check in. We're waiting there with 2 other people. This other worker came by and flashed his iPad for 2 seconds, asked us if we were "these names on the ipad", did not give us time to even look at it. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to follow him, but I did and asked him again if our names were on his list. HE ALSO IGNORED ME! But proceeded to call out the names. So, okay, whatever AGAIN. He was so rude in explaining the instructions. He said "I didn't tell you to put those on. I don't know why you're putting those on." RUDE AND CONDESCENDING! Mind you, both of these workers are definitely over 30 years old. First guy, probably 50s. Second guy, probably 30s. Not supposed to be young and naive people. We're almost done getting ready and we're inside the gaming room now. We have the VR headset on, he passed us our guns. My boyfriend noticed his gun wasn't shooting. He told the worker it wasn't working, the worker disregarded him and said "that's how its supposed to be". Now, the game is over. My boyfriend is the usual gamer type and definitely knows how to play these shooting games. He had the highest accuracy score, but also the lowest kills and I mean, ridiculously low. He kept dying throughout the game. It was because HIS GUN WAS NOT WORKING. Ruined his experience. Rude workers ruined my experience. WHY are these workers so RUDE?! We were group of 4 walk-in before 3pm on weekdays and there were no one so we got into easily. The service here was on point when we got introduced with all the gear and stuff by Oscar, then Luis. They were best and accomodate us perfectly. We decied to play Deadwood Valley which was the newest game of Zombie and got hooked up pretty fast. You got to choose weapons but for each teammate have to be different one. We were so impress that we had to play another one - Amber in the Sky 2088- Kevin got us tons of tip and super useful advices on how to play this one. Overall, recommended 10/10. Holy mother of virtual reality~ If you haven't tried one of their VR experiences yet, this review will seriously leave you with major FOMO. I FINALLY got to try this out with a group of friends on a Thursday night and boy was it booked down to the last session. We were lucky enough to get a spot for Deadwood Mansion about a week in advance and came just on time for the fun. It's best to come at least 15 minutes early just to get the equipment set up. Prior to the experience, you'll sign a liability waiver, create a team name, member names, and put on the ankle and wrist sensors. It's easy for the sensors to fall off since they're heavy, so it's best to make sure you have everything on tightly to ensure that you wouldn't have to stop the game due to the sensors falling off -like mine and a friend's did :(-. Not only that, each of the sensors comes with a "L" or "R" label so you know which wrist/ankle to put it on. If you skip this step, you'll look cross legged the entire game. After putting on your gear, you get told the instructions via an AI figure which then helps you decide on which weapon you want to choose for the game. The team leader is the one that carries the team since they have to listen in on the instructions carefully, so pick wisely on someone who will lead your team to victory! Once the game started, we immediately went into battle mode, scanning the area and preparing ourselves for game play. Each level got harder and harder with difficult bosses and zombie additions that will make your head spin. Not only that, but they make it even harder as your team mates die and you end up needing someone to revive you. I won't go too into detail since I want to save the fun as a surprise factor, but trust me, as a twenty-something-year-old who doesn't game often, this is the one thing I would splurge on. Some other pluses are that they have boxes you can keep your stuff in, free movie-like videos you get to post on social media, and a rundown of the stats for which teammate did the most damage, etc. After finishing what seemed like an hour long game (it ran for 30ish minutes for us since they took long to check us in), my teammates were sweating (pls wear workout clothes) and we sat outside talking about the game for another 30 minutes absorbing everything that happened. I loved, loved, loved this place. I wish I could give iy 6 stars. I must admit that it was difficult of me to find in the mall. But, I just gave them a call and they guided me right in. They even meet me outside and met me. So, FYI, the place is located on the second floor of the mall, down from the food court and across from Aldo at the end of the hall. The place is very clean and organized. The staff is uber friendly. Top notch, grade A employees. They could not have been nicer. I made an appointment online earlier in the day, but even though they do accept walk-ins, I highly recommend reservations. They make thing a a lot easier. You only go with your group, no matter if it is only 2 of you or 6. They do not put you with others or combines groups. You should arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled time to check in, and get set up. When you arrive, you first check in at the kiosk/sign waiver and then they suit you up with ankle and wrist sensors, a vest and backpack, a headset and of course googles. You do have to wear your COVID mask during your session. I had an issue with my goggles fogging up due to my mask. I recommend wearing either a gaiter or some type of none fogging mask to really enjoy your adventure. You start off with a tutorial and then you roll right in to your adventure. You can choose between 4 different ones. I chose the most popular one, Deadwood Mansion, which is some type of zombie one. It was awesome and so realistic. I thought that people screaming in the trailers was fake, but oh no, it is real. You think you are really seeing and feeling the zombies and rats. You vest vibrates if you are hit to add to the realism. If you really get into it, then you will probably finish with a light to moderate workout feeling. My session lasted about 30 minutes in total and I was sweating afterwards. After you are done the person in your group with the highest score is crowned (literally) the MVP. You then take a selfie, remove your equipment and head back to the lobby where they show you your scores and video on one of the televisions. You are also emailed the score and videos to view at home (included with admission). I give this activity my highest recommendation and could not have had more fun. It is not your ordinary thing to do. There are not many places like this out there. I hope that this catches on and they bring this to Indianapolis. I would love to do it again. read more

A total blast. I am a senior and was a bit nervous, so we chose the Squid Game because it was the least violent. We were totally immersed in a virtual world and had a wonderful time.
