We've eaten at Sandro's when they were on 81st St. and loved everything about it. At a recent dinner at the new 86th St. location, a few things stuck out: they give you 4 very thin slices of bread and charge you $5.75 if you ask for more. The wine list, while extensive, if incredibly overpriced. The least expensive glass of wine is $15; several were $25. Yes, the food was very good, but we found the nickel-and-diming really offensive. read more

Food was really good. Like A-/B+ but the service was some of the strangest thing I've experienced. They took our menu away while we had apps on the table so the paper menus didn't get dirty so I had to search the menu on my phone. This is a cute cozy restaurant with great food. Nice place to take a date. Service is excellent, and food comes out pretty quickly. You can make a reservation, though we went on a weekend for dinner and it didn't seem like the wait was very long. Noise level is on the quieter side! FOOD: They give fresh complimentary bread, lentil soup and dessert at the end, which I love! I would recommend the rigatoni and meatballs. The pasta was very fresh and cooked just right. There was a perfect amount of sauce, and it comes with 2 medium sized meatballs. The portions are average (not too small or excessive). Must try their spicy oil, which goes so well with pasta!! DESSERT: I was a little disappointed with their tiramisu. While different places have their own way of making their tiramisu, theirs just Didn't have much espresso in it. First, the food is mediocre at best. Sent back the Caesar Salad since it was the most lack luster salad - no dressing, dry, no flavor, at least they took it off the check. Very expensive for what they are serving. My girlfriend wanted to visit this restaurant but it seems it a typical UES restaurant "trap" Offer bad food at a high price and UESiders think it's great. Everything was very good except desert. We sat outside right near the front door and it was pleasant. Service was attentive without being overbearing though it might have been smarter to tell us the specials before we spent a lot of time studying the menu, but that is a minor complaint. The food came fast. My friend had chicken cacciatore and I had the grilled shrimp. The "baked on site" grissini are excellent. Good selection of wine by the glass. Food served by Sandro's feeds your soul. You have to go to experience it. Eating there is far better than getting takeout as there are so many mouth watering specials that you can't get from the takeout menu. During the lockdown, the takeouts fed our soul though. Really solid spot on the UES -- probably about as authentic Roman as is possible up there. On our first visit, we got mussels in a red sauce to start, followed by the cacio e pepe, bucatini amatriciana, tagliatelle with ragu, spaghetti pomodoro, and an off-menu chicken parm that was really excellent. I liked the pastas as well, with my favorites being the cacio and the pomodoro (which might sound boring, but the sauce was excellent). Also, the complimentary bruschetta to start was outstanding. Sandro's is the epitome of a great neighborhood restaurant. It's cozy, comfortable, and full of locals looking for Caesar salad with anchovies, Amarone wine, and wisps of shaved parmigiano reggiano. So Sandro's specializes in the cuisine of Rome; therefore, try to order a dish that is quintessentially Roman. A dish that screams Roma from the top of the seven hills. A dish like cacio e pepe. I of course went with the cacio e pepe, which is off the menu, but mentioned as a special. They don't have it every night, only the nights when Sandro himself can prepare it. This was absolutely delicious. The specials list was quite long, and had a couple of dishes that piqued my interest, specifically the rigatoni with oxtail ragu. An authentic Italian dining experience. Wow, I loved Sandro's. The ambiance was great!!! A small restaurant with around 15 tables, white walls, an attentive staff, and the owner present. Entrees were all top notch, the pasta cooked to perfection. Dessert was great and served with complimentary grappa and supplemented with our addition of limoncello. Sandro's is one of the best traditional Italian restaurants in the city. I was here celebrating my wife's birthday a few weeks ago and they did a great job keeping everyone happy. Everyone was able to find something on he menu they liked, probably because they have about 100 specials every night. The waiter kept the wine and beers flowing which made for a great night. On top of that the food was excellent! Highlights of my time here were the chicken parm, monkfish, truffle pasta, and the cacio e pepe (it's not family style, I just ate off of everyone's plate). I almost forgot to mention this, they literally gave my wife a sandro's plate when we left so she could remember the fun birthday celebration we had here. Nice touch! There's nothing I like better than a business appreciating its customers. I'll be back soon for more food and maybe more plates too! read more

OMG passed this by so many times. I thought it was Mexican. What an amazing Italian restaurant. It's really tiny. There seem to be almost as many specials as meals on the regular menu. The homemade grossini is delicious. We had two specials (lamb and swordfish) and both were amazing. I rarely have dessert, but didn't pass it up this time. So good. It had been years since my last visit to Sandro's, and I missed this place! I had a great dinner with a friend who had always wanted to try it. There were so many specials that we didn't order anything off the printed menu! We started with the fried Artichokes, followed by the Cache Y Peppe, and finally the Veal Bologna. All three dishes were very tasty, and the portions large. The service was friendly, and attentive, without being overbearing. This is a really nice, local authentic Italian place. Great atmosphere, warm & inviting. We dined in summer but could see it being a really nice winter meal. Service was impeccable, excellent server with a 1st class attitude enhancing the meal completely. He suggested an Italian match to a Pinot Noir and it was super good, perfect pairing for fish & pasta. There were many specials, some sounded great, we tried a couple We opened sharing an artichoke app, perfect amount to share of 3. My main was the fresh salmon. Server said all of their fish is fresh catch and they inform guests only when it's farmed. I eat only fresh. It was served with a nice crispy top and not over cooked, a usually difficult feat but this was very nice. My son had a pasta which with a light cream sauce that was the table winner. Got a last minute reservation at Sandro's on NYE. Place was packed and lively. Mostly older crowd but a few younger couples. Decor is plain but to be honest we werent there for the view. Menu is fairly slim but there are a massive amount of specials (I believe there were 42 the night we were there). Ordered a shared appetizer and two entrees off of the special menu and didnt regret our choices for a second. Best mozzarella I have ever tasted, and the pasta was absolutely exquisite. I have been here 3-4 times and tried many items on the menu and the rotating long list of specials (not all specials change but there's usually a few new ones each time). CYP is awesome as is the bucatini. Veal Milanese is nice too. Branzino and swordfish special are awesome alternatives to the red meat. Their artichokes and crispy and delicious, their suppli are perfection, and their all'amatricina sauce is made just as it should be. Ok let me 1st say this place is so noisy you have to scream to have a conversation with other people at your table. 2nd the food is ok. Dry Cacio Pepe is not hard not to do. Lastly and most egregious is the wine. I saw a bottle of Sandro's wine from Umbria (obviously a private label) I asked if I could get a taste and was told no it's only sold by the bottle. Upon receiving the wine I tasted a small sample. It was horrific. Not Corked but just crappy wine. I don't know what was worse. The fact that the offer this wine at $60 or having the delusion to even offer this wine for free. It was that bad. Upon ordering another wine ( a label I was familiar with) I was told by the waitress no matter what I was paying for the bottle. One of the best traditional Italian dining experiences. Sandro's is not so much an Italian American restaurant, its just straight up Italian; Roman to be exact. Meaning the menu is basically all in Italian as is the wine list. This place blew my expectations out of the water - it was phenomenal to say the least. I did not have a reservation here and they accommodated both my girlfriend and I with only a minutes notice. They gave us an hour before they needed the table for the next reservation. This was very generous on their behalf! But let's get into the food -- I was apprehensive about their pasta because the prices were a little on the high side but believe me it was exceptional. The pennete (mini penne) with vodka sauce and bolognese pasta was exceptional too. Decent sized portions that complement wine and bread perfectly. They also gave us cookies and grappa at the end which was a great addition to our meal. Great classy ambiance with a family feel culture. We had to come here after learning that family of the owners of a winery we toured in Frascati, Italy, had a restaurant in New York. We weren't disappointed. It's clear the family takes a lot of pride in each aspect of this establishment. As many others have mentioned, they typically have a large selection of specials that you won't see if you just look at the menu posted online. I was astounded that our server was able to remember and recite them all. The food was great, the service was exemplary, and considering what an expensive city New York is, the price for dinner including drinks and gratuity was astonishingly reasonable. Sando's is a cute little nook of a place tucked below street level on a quiet, lovely block on the UES. OK, I live on this block, so I might be partial. So being literally a few doors down from me, I've been wanting to try it ever since I moved in 2 years ago. I finally recently got sufficient motivation lately when they started advertising their recession special outside on the sidewalk. From 4:30-6:30 M-F, their pasta dishes are discounted according to the number the Dow closed at on that particular day. Normally priced at $20+, they are discounted to under $10! So my husband and I stopped in to take advantage of the deal last night. It was completely empty at 6pm, but we made ourselves comfy at the bar and snacked on delicious homemade breadsticks and olives while we awaited our meals. I got what I believe is their signature dish, the spaghetti limone and my husband had the pancetta rigatoni. Mine was really, really good. It was slightly creamy and slightly lemony - just a perfect balance. It was a simple dish, but they executed it to perfection. The pancetta rigatoni was also good, but we both preferred mine. We also really liked how authentic Sandro's seemed. From everyone working there to the TV behind the bar set on an Italian-speaking station, you're really going to get a true Italian experience. I wish the plain white decor had a little more pizazz, but it did look look clean and polished. The crowd that began to trickle in as we finished up was definitely of the older or expense account variety and you can see why when you check out their food and wine menu prices. It's definitely pricey compared to neighboring Italian restaurants, but I would venture to say it's also better than most. Based on the quality of everything we tried, I would say it is worth a splurge. P.S. This is the third Sandro's location I've been to. Original restaurant was on 59th street, then Sandro moved to 9th Avenue in Chelsea (way before it was cool) after a hiatus and now is on the UES. In that regard, I feel the place has grown up with me. Sadly (and hopefully where the metaphor ends), Sandro's has gotten worse and not better each step of the way. The good: Present (usually) owner, lots of specials and a focus on Roman food (most fine New York Italians are Northern). Used to be lots of comps/freebies back in the day. The bad: Prices don't match experience and staff is ehhhh. Hard to transition from chef to owner, but given how long it has been you'd think the kinks would be out by now.
