Whenever I'm sick I really want rotisserie chicken and I don't know why. Going into Sandy with a nasty chest cold, I didn't know they had rotisserie chicken. But $16 later, I had a whole chicken, a whole large aluminum takeout container of rice, a pint of beans, and a salad. Dinner for me and the boy for that night, and soup for me and the boy the next day. Despite knowing an embarrassingly small amount of Spanish (so little in fact, that I would hesitate to try and communicate, although I probably could), I got along just fine in here. I can't comment on the quality of the food, but this was our encounter this morning. 1. Seat ourselves at a table that wasn't cleaned up after the last guest. 2. Wait 10 minutes for server to take our order and then told they have no bacon 3. My guest and I order chicken parms. 4. 45 minutes later we notice that all the surrounding tables came in after us and were served before us. 5. 45 more minutes pass without being checked in on or an explanation given so we left. I used to live in the neighborhood a couple of years ago. Their cuban sandwich was a great (but HUGE) sized portion. I just went here last week and got the last piece of flan for dessert after my Patsy's Pizza indulgence. I got the last piece, thank GOD! My wife and I enjoyed it tremendously! I've never dined in this place, I get it on the way home or delivery. I've never been disappointed. The food is tasty, the English translation on the menu is helpful to those of us that aren't interested in learning another language. The chicken always hits the spot. The various rices (white, yellow, etc) are always decent. The sweet plantains have been hit or miss. For the most part, its good. I'll continue to eat here. Years ago I would stop at Sandy's on the way home from the airport. Since moving back I've been here a few times and have slowly fallen out of love with them. My favorite was the mofongo, with ajonjoli juice. I've gotten it three times and have been disappointed each time. The chicharon hasn't been fresh and without fresh chicharon mofongo falls flat. This last time I stopped in for Alcapurrias. The travesty. I ate one immediately because I was starving but didn't have time to stop and eat. It was horibble. Cold, flavorless and doughy. Alcapurrias are made of yuca NOT dough! which is why I got it! It was super disappointing. The ajonjoli juice was no bueno tanpoco. In the last few months we've gotten mondogo, mofongo, burgers, frituras and lord knows what else only to be disappointed. I'm done and am finally admitting that mom is right, the cuchifrito place down the street is way better. read more

Complete Bliss when you are starving and wanting some good old fashioned lunch foods from the isles. The "appetizers" are my favorite, with platanos rellenos and dobladas or even the simple bowl of rice and beans. Prices are good and plates are big. I live downtown now so i come every time I'm back home. can't wait to move back near to this place. definitely a keeper. concerns: wouldn't recommend the tamarind juice... not so great. No bueno. Sandy's must have changed chefs, staff, or management, because when I had it Wednesday, it underwhelmed. The arroz con gandules was not the same. All the flavor was knocked out of it, and they're using a different kind of rice. The chicken was ok, but that too had more flavor I remember. The roast pork was the only decent thing they got left. Ok this has been my go to when I feel like I deserve to treat myself to real food (i.e. food you can eat with a spoon or fork). The food is good and authentic. A bit pricey which has kept my visits to a few treats. I have had the lunch take out with pollo guisado + white rice + red beans + maduros (fried sweet plantain). I have a love-hate relationship w/ Sandy's. It was my introduction to Harlem, the hood where i now rest my head at night. I was a freshman in college living in posh midtown dorms, and my roomie knew some Harlemites that insisted i try out Sandy's. It was sooooo good! juicy, flavorful chicken, perfectly cooked rice, really good sandwiches. I miss THAT Sandy's. IDK if it's because of Caridad moving in across the street and taking a lot of their business, but something happened and now the chicken is dry, the rice is undercooked (stuck in your teeth status) dry ass sandwiches, idk what happened. Used to love them, even though we had a language barrier, I never felt like they had a attitude about it, i just pointed to what i wanted on the menu and that was that. It helped to bring my spanish homegirl along of course. I don't recommend it, go across the street to Caridad for better spanish food. One of my favorite spots in all of Harlem. The main thing you need to know about this place is that they serve food cuchifrito style, so the quality of your meal kinda depends on when you go there. Go there for lunch or dinner and you're going to have some of THE best Spanish/Caribbean food you've ever tasted. A late night meal is gonna leave you disappointed, though, cause some of the food dries out by then. Weird, I know. I choose to judge this place based on their best, though. Their yellow rice with pollo guisado is legitimately the best I've ever had at a restaurant; it tastes just like my mother and grandmother's version. Their Morir Soñando is also great. So i ordered a chicken sandwich with drink at about 230pm. Waited till 330 then gave them a call to check on the order.was told that they only had 1 delivery man and that's the delay. Waited another 45 minutes and asked to speak to a manager. management told we it was a change of shift and that my ticket/order was lost. I explained that being it was 1 hour and 45 minutes later the sandwich wasn't what i wanted anymore being that dinner was that much closer. I asked if he could comp me an item and i would switch my order and order from the dinner menu. He wasn't trying to do that, not even a small item could be suggested. Do not go to this restaurant. The food is horrible along with the service. I ordered a #1 which consists of chicken rice plantains and 3 sodas. The chicken was super dry and when I cut it open was white, the rice hard, the plantains mushy and too moist. Along the rim of the sodas all you see is dirt. Then the guy servicing the food was using a rag and no gloves to clean up then went to serve the food yuk (calling NYS department of health) I had to ask him to put gloves on. DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE. I ordered on Seamless, When I opened my bag 2 flys came out. Instead of giving me the avacado salad I ordered they gave me a regular dry salad. Went there recently with family for fried pork chops with yellow rice and beans and green plantains and it was good we sat at the counter service was friendly and great we where hungry and they came through. I give three even though, to me, there are a bunch of negatives, because I actually go here quite often. Mostly though just for their oxtails on Saturday. The rest of the stuff is pretty standard lechonera stuff, as someone else mentioned, and there is better in the neighborhood. The rabo, however, is good and Saturday's the only day I can handle a meal like that. Service is unfriendly but efficient (who cares, I get my food) and the beans are a little ketchup-y. I can't even give this restaurant half of one star. I went there one night before closing and order a good amount of food to go. It smelled and looked go when they brought it out to put in the bags. Once I arrived home and my family and I went to eat it the food was disgusting. It all tasted of bad old oil. We had to throw all the food away. I called the next morning and the staff was not helpful at all. I was told to call back for the night manager. I called back that evening and was told I was to speak to the day manager and they hung up. I called right back and the phone just rang each time and finally after my 5 attempt someone picked up again and then they acted as if they new nothing about my previous call. I really loved my meal here. The stew chicken was so yummy and only $7.50 for lunch! The rice was seasoned well and the chicken was very juicy and tender. I also had a shrimp empanada, which was tasty but not over the top write home to your mom about it. Went to Sandy's restaurant with some friends this past weekend and was excited to finally eat some Latin food. The place was pretty much empty, but our waitress took forever taking our order, and didn't understand what I was saying whether I was speaking English or Spanish. She seemed confused about the items on the menu. I got arroz con pollo y habichuelas, as well as an assortment of empanadas for the table. Our food arrived 40 minutes later, we weren't told which empanada was which, and had to cut each one open to determine what was inside (apparently it's not common sense that people have allergies, food restrictions, etc). Our waitress did not check on us once the entire time. There was a family sitting at the table next to ours, and after 15 minutes of getting no acknowledgment or service, they left. The food was good. When it came to our bill, we tried to get our waitress' attention but she ignored us. Then we tried to flag down another waitress - said excuse me, raised our hands, and were practically in her face and she still saw right through us. We eventually had to go to the front to demand to pay the check that clearly wasn't well deserved by the establishment, because it would be rude not to pay. Obviously. On our way out, a drunk old man sitting at the bar cursed at us for no apparent reason. What a gentleman. All in all, good food but absolutely shitty service, professionalism, and regard for paying customers. I will never return. I'll stick to Queens for my rice and chicken fix.
