The quality of food here depends on the time of day or night you get here. I walk by this place everyday. I'm not a big beef or pork eater, so the place is not a huge favorite of mine since they mostly have this product available. It's actually pretty nasty with the way they have an exhaust fan violently blowing full blast into peoples faces as they walk by outside. There's nothing like getting blasted in the face with the smell of swine every morning. But I must admit that this place is a life saver when I am stumbling home after a long night of festivities. Rice, beans platanos, and those ginger fruit drinks (forget what they are called in spanish). English is not a preferred language in this joint so I find my self pointing at my selection of food.Nothing too fancy in here. Waited an hour for my food, the delivery man was very rude. He called me & told me to come outside for my food, I get downstairs and he wasn't even there. I called him & he says give him 5 minutes, I was waiting for almost 10. He finally arrives with my food, and I paid with a $20 bill. He doesn't even have the proper change to give me. Sandy's recently underwent a renovation and while it certainly looks cleaner and nicer, they VERY OBVIOUSLY and PAINFULLY did not keep attempt to renovate with the following in mind: Organization and logical flow of patrons. Short version: don't expect to be in-and-out if you want the hot food. it's pure CHAOS waiting for your food and trying to pay. Long version: I walked in at 5pm on a Saturday, so it was getting to be pretty busy. There was a crowd of people standing by the door who were waiting to pay. So in order to bypass this crowd, you have to awkwardly walk around and squeeze past people who are just trying to enjoy their meal at their tables. Fine, you're finally in line for the hot-food and ready to go. BUUUT then, it's nearly impossible to make eye contact with anyone to serve the hot food because the glass covering comes up way too high (i'm 5'4", average height)--so what ends up happening is the dude BEHIND me gets served BEFORE me only because he has the luck of being over 6 feet tall on his side. Anyway, all i want is some pre-prepared rice, oxtail stew, and a 1/2 lb of chicharron. I order and think the worst is over. But NOO...I guess, as a result of me and the dude behind me not being Latinos, they assume we are together even though nothing would indicate this other than the fact that we both ordered in English. So this mix-up takes awhile for them to realize. Mind you, there's 100 people behind the counter, running back and forth, squeezing all up on each other. Very uncomfortable to watch--they are all like chickens without heads. Anyway, when the mix-up is cleared and i think the worst is over, I'm wrong! One last obstacle to overcome: a glorious and intractably long wait to hand over my cash--this experience can only be summed up by a few choice words: fucking CHAOS and HOT-MESS traffic jam. If you must go, since the food is decent, do so during off-peak hours to save yourself the misery. Or, like Steve S says--go to Caridad across the street. read more

Love this place. Usually stop on my way out of the city if driving for a Cubano (cuban sandwich). They do it well.

I Ordered for delivery a mofongo and 2 alcapurria. When the food came it was the worst mofongo I ever bought. They didnt smash the plantains well left chunks, no taste of garlic nor chicharon. Who ever made this doesn't know how to make mofongo. Also the accapurrias where cold hard and taste horrible. Big disappointment Iknow not to expect for it to taste like 116 cuchifitos but at least be edible. It was a waste of money. Very disappointed. read more

I went in for some Puerto Rican food while I was roaming around East Harlem. Honestly I was looking at several restaurants and I don't know why I chose this one. The employees were focused on a game on TV and I waited a while for my meal. When I did got my yellow rice, meat streak, etc.. I found it very dry and salty. It was definitely overpriced in that I did not like the food but oh well, past is past. If I was to try some Puerto Rican food, I'd give a different restaurant a shot, pretty sure I'd love it. read more

if there were fewer stars i would give them all to this place. i have to walk by here rather often as i live closeby and the disgusting smell coming from it hits me everytime. thankfully it is closed and i sure i hope it was shut down by the health department because it was beyond dirty and gross. i hope it will stay closed and we get to get an authentic latin place to represent the neighborhood's culture. this was not culture this was garbage. also the staff was always incredibly lazy, slow and unqualified to be in service and the prices were ridiculously expensive. (a bowl of rice was $6 while you could get better one at the chinese place for $1.50). read more

I recently ordered and was disgusted. I ordered 3 sandwiches. The Pernil sandwiches were pure fat and grease it was gross! I ordered a steak sandwich on the steak was so hard you couln't even bite into it. I called to complain and was answered by a very rude woman who said you are right depending on who makes the sandwich you can get alot of fat in your sandwich. Horrible service! I placed an order for delivery and the delivery man was a complete moron. First he claimed that he couldn't get into the building because the door was locked, despite the fact that people were going in and out of the building at the time. Then, once someone went downstairs(which we really shouldn't have had to do), he refused to bring the food to the building. He actually wanted to deliver the food outside on the sidewalk, which was completely unacceptable. He then proceeded to ride off on his bicycle with the food. I have never had a delivery experience like this, never! Needless to say, Sandy's will never be patronized by me and my family/friends again. Fir the first time on over 15 years, they delivered my food and it was spoiled rice. The owner told me I would have to bring the food back to the store. I told them it's not my fault they sent me soiled food and that they should come and give me back my money. He said no. I have to come to the store. I will be contacting consumers affairs. I had ordered from this restaurant in hopes of a decent dinner for a friend and I and to my surprise I was terribly disappointed with the food and the service. The guy that took my order didn't accurately take it and was rude from the beginning, however, I did receive my food in a timely manner just to have some of my order incomplete. When I called them back to inform them of their error the same guy hangs up the phone on me. I called back and his response is "what do you want". I will never order from them again. read more
