Sandy's on the beach has the best burgers in town! My husband and I went there one evening for a late dinner and the service was excellent as well as the food. The establishment was very clean. We moved out of state 4 years ago. Every time we come back to visit, we come here. Feels more like a restaurant than bar with food. Food is excellent, drinks are well priced. We usually spend about four hours here having drinks with old friends and playing keno. The staff is always nice and attentive. The only warning I give is make sure to have cash. What a nice surprise! Out of character for my usual MO I was craving a burger on a Saturday night. Since I was shopping by a Chili's I figured what the hell why not. But there was a giant wait. I do NOT wait to eat chain restaurant food EVER. So I thought if I'm gonna wait why not check out a new place and hit Sandy's in Redford. It was slammed when we got there but even with 10 people in line we waited less than 10 minutes for a table. While nothing special on the inside it was cozy enough and the packed house of people enjoying a night out was infectious. Since it was slammed I fully expected the food to take a bit. We were about 20 minutes in to a totally anticipated delay and two free drinks show up with an apologetic waitress over the wait. Wow. I wasn't even mad considering how busy they were but how classy was that? Nice. Food showed up soon after and was delicious. I had a special from the board blackened burger with blue cheese. It was drowning in blue cheese which I love, unlike a lot of places that give you a crumb of blue cheese and call it a day. The blackened seasoning was just perfect. The meat was great and is the best burger I have had in recent memory. The only niggle would be they are part of the conspiracy that asks how you want your burger cooked when they are going to cook it to well done anyway. But every place seems to do this so no harm no foul and the burger I had was still juicy and not over cooked. There are also nice condiments in bulk at the tables. Pepperoncinis and new pickle type sliced pickles which is a nice touch. Let me just touch on the fries for a moment too. They were the bigger fat fries I usually hate because I loathe, despise, abhor, and spurn soggy fries which is really easy to do with these kind of fries. They were crispy and salty and perfect. Why spend all this time talking about fries? Because if they can take the time even when they are slammed to capacity to actually cook the fries long enough to make them how they are supposed to be that's pretty darn rare for anyplace let alone one balls deep in customers. We came here after passing by for years. I should have definitely stopped sooner! Everyone was happy with their meal. My cheeseburger was perfect and fries were crispy and hot. Yum, YUm, YUM!!! I'm a burger-lover and so not just any beef patty will do, however, Sandy's by the Beach was already scoring as soon as they sat us down. Right smack-dab in the middle of the table was a lazy susan full of the most delicious condiments. I went for the dill pickles while waiting on a pitcher of beer which had a ice-bat attached to the handle to keep it nice and cold. Then came the burgers and fries. The buns tasted homemade and didn't fall apart even though the burger was hefty. The cheese was perfectly melted on the patty and the burger itself was very tasty. I tried both the "regular" fries and the sweet potatoes and although they were both good, I recommend spending the extra bucks for the latter. The service was quick and our waitress was attentive and pleasant. I know people have not been pleased with the fact that they don't accept credit cards but if that's the only complaint, I'm happy to bring cash. So are we going back anytime soon? I think what makes this place "OK" is that there isn't anything else in the area. It smells really, really, really bad in here, especially close to the back, which is where the kitchen is. The mildew/old stench makes enjoying even bar food impossible. The food isn't anything special. My French fries tasted like fish sticks. It was was Friday fish fry day, so I'm sure the fryers just got crossed, but it was still pretty gross. Service here is good, and the only reason to come in. read more

My family has been coming here since God was a boy and we're planning to continue the tradition. Do yourself a favor and order the patty melt, medium rare. You'll never have a better burger. I promise. Oh and some of the servers have been working there for over 20 and 30 yrs so I'm pretty impressed with how well they must treat their employees. Oh, and one more thing. The best damn burger and Labatt's served up by hardened old blondes. Take a seat at the bar and mingle with the regulars. Awesome. Walked by on a summer Saturday afternoon to check out their new patio. Had my sleeping babe in the stroller, but thought it would be okay for us to sit outside and have a burger. The crowd and waitresses gave me some pretty dirty looks, for bringing a baby to (technically) a bar?? It was outside! He was sleeping! Not sure what that was all about. Tired of the redundancy of eating at the same place for lunch everyday?? If you are fortunate enough to work in the Redford area, then this spot is a nice change of pace from McD's and Del Taco. The burger tasted like it was made with fresh ingredients including the bun. The portions were generous, french fries were properly cooked, and the chili had good flavor. Staff seems very efficient and ordering carry-out was fast and accurate. And like some other restaurants, this place apparently does not like contributing to the growing credit card debt problem that has plagued out society; therefore, cash is king! The overall experience and prime Redford location should be enough to bring you back for seconds. read more

I simply love this place. Everything is fantastic - the service, ambiance, other guests, THE FOOD and the prices. I'm NEVER disappointed here. Their salads are huge, burgers hand-pattied and cooked to order, and I tried the French Dip the other day and it's TO DIE FOR. Tender beef (not fatty), flavorful au jus (with actual herbs in the jus) and a toasted bun. Add grilled onions and cheese for an even better sandwich. I try to eat here at least once every other week (I work in the area), but I could truthfully come here much more often. It's the best! read more

Its been a while since I've been to Sandy's by the Beach, and I found myself here again. My last experience/review wasn't that great, but I wanted to update to say, what a difference a day makes! First of all, they were very busy and did they're best to accommodate people so no one had to wait very long, which wins big points. Next, the place was busy and hectic as mentioned, but the service was quick and the staff operated like a well oiled machine to service all of the customers. The food was quick, and the burgers were absolutely delicious...for me, equal to or better than any other place in the metro area I have had. As far as cash only, and complaining about it and even dinging them star because of it...there are no less than 3 signs as you walk in, two if which are right in your face (one on the exterior door, and one at the "wait to be seated" sign at eye level). If anyone doesn't notice them, guess what...you may want to reflect on your own issues, like your lack of attentiveness! Im glad things worked out that I wound up back here, I will be back. It was pretty good. I ordered the corned beef sandwich with fries. The fries were good, but the sandwich was so greasy! May just be my preference, but honestly thought it was greasier than fast food places I've been too. It did taste good, I added pickles to my sand which and I liked the dressing on the side, the grease just kind of ruined it for me. The rye bread was good and the corned beef was good. If grease isn't for you, ask for lite butter on the grilled sandwich. I would of had I known but this was our first time there. My dad ordered a wrap and said it was good. My mom got a blue cheese burger that was a little undercooked from what she requested, but had LOTS of blue cheese. She actually had to take some off, which my dad ate. Food is good bar food. Kitchen usually rocks the food in good time. Friendly place. Unfortunately take out is hit and miss. The bartenders are responsible for taking the take out orders. Depending on how busy the place is the bartenders will take the phone off the hook. I have also noticed that if the owner is not in the phone comes off the hook. Like tonight, I called 4 times before I decided to go and order at the bar. When I arrived I called one last time from the parking lot before going in. Again no answer. When I entered the bar it was less than half full. This seems to happen when the same 2 bartenders are working together. This has happened to me 3 times in the past two years. You've gotta stop in this place for a burger! I've been here twice. The first time was with my daughter. There's no kids menu so she had to get a 1/3 lb. burger with fries (about $5.50) and she ate every bite of it because it was so good. She normally doesn't eat much but she finished the whole thing! The second time was with my daughter and boyfriend and we again had a fantastic burger. I recommend Sandy's Delight - 1/3 lb. burger with fries for $5.50ish - that's the price of a value meal at McDonalds and I guarantee this hand made burger will be 100% better. The place has been packed both times with a line to be seated. The main bar area is pretty smokey but the back area is much better and a little more kid friendly, but it's still a bar. They have sports on the big screen tv's and the wait staff is very friendly. They only take cash though so be prepared when you go. I wasn't but they did have an ATM onsite. read more

Sandy's is one of the best local places for a burger. I grew up going to Sandy's weekly and as an adult will still go there when I get the craving for a great burger. I get the Sandy's Delight which is 1/3 lb of meat...the perfect portion size for my appetite. Sandy's offers larger sized burgers for those with more of an appetite. All burgers are cooked to order with your choice of toppings and come with a side of fries. I love the fries at Sandy's. If burgers aren't your thing they also have great sandwiches, salads, and other standard bar fare. The inside is kind of small, so on an evening or weekend, you could expect a wait. Now that Michigan is non-smoking it is much more pleasant inside! Sandy's also has an outside covered patio which is a great seating option. Sports are always playing at Sandy's so you never have to miss your favorite teams! Cash only at Sandy's, but they have an ATM onsite if needed. A Sandy's burger is way better than a Miller's burger in my opinion! read more

Never would have guessed it but this place is amazing! All the prices are extremely reasonable (especially the beer). Among this the portion sizes of the meals are awesome! I order the BLT which was on big Texas toast, and filled with lots of awesomely cooked bacon. Along with this perfect sandwich were a large portion of nicely cooked fries. I stopped here with a friend for a burger & beer. I've heard good things about their burger, and I'm all about good meat. The service was pretty good considering how busy they were. I had no problem grabbing stools at the bar. If we wanted a table, we would've had to wait in line for about 20 minutes, which is understandable on a Friday night. I'm pretty sure the bartender mixed our order up because I think my burger was cooked well instead of medium, but I couldn't see my burger because it was so dark. My friend's burger didn't look much different. Either way, it was good. I would definitely go back for another burger. The fries were pretty standard, hot & crispy, which is a good thing! I haven't met too many fries I didn't like. Lots of TV's if you care about sports. The regulars seem pretty nice as well. The only downside is that they only take cash. I came here 5+ years ago when I was browsing some Detroit area "Best Burgers" list and this place was on my way to the airport. My wife and I agreed it was indeed one of the best burgers we had (at that time). Loved how they gave you all the pickles you wanted in a jar on the table. Fast forward to 2014 and I put together a group meet-up with some work buddies, and we all got a burger (based largely on my 5+ year old memory / recommendation). And the vote was unanimous....they serve a great burger here. Don't know what they do, but they do it right. Downside is that they accept cash only and the seating / atmosphere is nothing great and a bit crammed. read more

We had heard great things about Sandy's. I even had verified they did carry out from the establishment themselves. Well, when we tried to call no one answered. We called 15-20x in 35 minutes, we were really wanting to try the food! Not once was the phone answered, not even to be put on hold. I'm so disappointed, but if you can't be bothered to answer a phone when you provide carry out service, not worth my time. We called O'Malleys a few miles away and got answered immediately and an order placed. The extra $2.30 a meal was worth it considering we were actually given some form of service. read more

Had the fish and chips. I wanted to go to Michno's for the nice perch but my lunch partner preferred Sandy's fish. Why? It was very greasy, slid down the gullet. Fries AND a roll - yes, Americans do need two starches with a meal. Too much food, but at least my friend has two more meals from what she took Home. Hey it was her treat, but I won't be back for the fish. And beware - do not request anything special, like thin bread, or rye instead of white. All my recent experiences are they make as stated regardless of what you request. Don't order beer anymore as it is too, too cold and they only have iced glasses.
