I came here on a Thursday afternoon on my last trip to Hawaii. Sandy's Cafe is located in China Town, my friend's mom was raving about this place and wanted to take us... I am glad she did! The staff were friendly and we were seated immediately. I ordered the Salt & Pepper Pork Chop on Rice with a Honey Lemon Tea. The pork chops were so flavorful and fried to perfection. I hate when pork chops are really fatty, but not these! The scallions and salt and pepper seasoning were so simple, yet it tasted so delicious. The portions here are HUGE, I couldn't even finish my meal! The Honey Lemon Tea was sweet and refreshing, perfect sweet taste to my savory meal. I am surprised this spot wasn't more packed! I assume the word hasn't gotten out yet about their food yet as this seemed to be a relatively new spot. I would highly recommend Sandy's Cafe if you are craving Hong Kong style food :) read more

Wanted to like this place but they definitely rip you off. I got a cold ginger chicken and roast duck plate and the roast duck portion was mainly just bones! I told the server about it but she didn't seem to care. And then when I was about to leave, I mentioned it again because I didn't really eat much of my plate. I'm assuming the manager/owner was there and she heard me and she said "the combo will come with mostly bones. That's why we gave more chicken." What a joke because my friend ordered the chicken & charsiu plate and it was the same amount of chicken AND she got a good amount of charsiu. I only maybe had one good piece of meat before I found out that all the bones were hidden underneath the one good piece and a duck drummette, which of course did not have much meat on it either because it was all dried out. The manager/owner said I better order the whole thing next time instead of the combo if I don't want all bones. For $20 a plate now, I would think they'd give a little more meat for the duck portion but guess it's bad on me to want to try both items at the same time. 1st time eating their food. Was actually craving something else until Cake Noodle got into my head. Probably my new fave. SUUUPER crispy. Little thinner patty so not too noodly...just my personal preference I got the minute chicken with "no gravy." Still had some gravy but everything on the side, so all good. Not as much chicken and veggies as other places, but it was still too much for me to finish. Chicken a little too sweet and even too salty for me and I felt super swo after, but otherwise tasty. Ok so I went back a few times to Sandy's Cafe after writing my first review. I've tried different items on the menu and man none disappointed me. All the dishes exceeded my expectations. Ok here a few dishes we've tried: Chicken and char siu rice: they make their own char siu, chicken and roast duck so they are very fresh. This dish is usually not available in the morning. One time I came at 9:30am they said they're still making it. But get it if it's available. Both chicken and char siu are very tender. And they usually tell the customers the chau siu is very fatty not the lean chau siu. Don't be fooled they are what we call "half fatty half lean", which is just perfect! Deep fried chicken wings/ Salt and pepper pork chop: they have similar flavor profiles and both were delicious! I like how they were deep fried yet feel very light. The wings were crispy without the thick layer of flour or coating on the outside. And you could tell they were seasoned well before going into that big pot of oil. Baked pork chop rice: it's one of the signature HK dishes and one of my favorite too besides beef chow fun. I like how the fried rice at the bottom were all separated from each other and all coated with eggs. The pork had a little bit fat and so was very tender. They put just the right amount of cheese and so didn't overpower the taste of ingredients. And in case you want to know how they handle reopening. They do provide hand sanitizer and practice social distancing. They put all the utensils and napkins in individual ziploc bags, not the most environmental friendly practice but definitely give their customers the peace of mind. read more

I went back several times to tried their other dishes on the menu. So far, it has been way better than my first experience. Service is quick, however, the waitress does sometimes get confused and forget our requests, such as our drinks and extra sauces. What I tried were 'Salt and Pepper Pork Chops on Rice,' 'Char Siu and Roast Duck on Rice,' and 'Singapore Rice Noodles.' Salt and pepper pork chops: Very good dish. The pork was juicy and soft. The salt and pepper toppings had a lot of flavors. Char siu and roast duck: My go-to order. The char siu slices were thick. It had the right amount of fat in each piece. One of the best char siu I had. As mentioned in my first review, the roast duck is still good. To me, this dish does not have enough sauce so I usually request extra sauces on the side. Singapore rice noodles: A tasty curry-flavored dish. The noodles were cooked perfectly. It was also slightly spicy. Overall, I ordered their dishes multiple times and it has been consistent. I liked their hours of operation where they are opened at 8:00 am. I'm usually an early riser so I always think of this place to dine-in in the morning. My husband and I tried this cafe for the first time in November. We took 2 visitors from down under(Aussies). We couldn't stop raving about the delicious roast duck, the fine noodles that goes with it. After trying their chicken cake noodles; wow, brok-dah-mouth, local expression. Even the service and ambience was good (for Chinese standards). Tables are bear with no condiments like the usual p/salt, soya sauce bottles. No complaints though. We could hardly wait till they came back from their 3 week break. Reopening was last Thursday and we went Friday for lunch. Well my husband surprised me and wants to go again today! I tried Sandy's cafe for the first time and was impressed! Their food came out really fast and the servers were very attentive. Their duck was delicious -- the skin was crispy. Their braised beef and tendon noodle soup was really good -- the braised beef was very soft and the noodles tasted really fresh! I was craving for chicken wings since one of my work friends mentioned she picked up lunches for her office from Von's on Pensacola St. I just had wings the night before but I still wanted more. After searching in yelp, it brought up some restaurants near by which served chicken wings. There was a new restaurant with just 3 reviews of this Hong Kong style cafe called Sandy's Cafe and decided to check it out at the Chinatown Cultural Plaza. They are opened from 10am -3pm during this COVID19 pandemic and is located in the former location of Spicy Pavilion or prior to that the Japanese Restaurant called Hifumi. It's near the back area by Taipan (dim sum restaurant) & near River St on the ground level. I forgot to confirm their closed days. I confirmed with her later that she was Sandy and they used to have a restaurant called Ginger House Chinese Restaurant in Mililani. The high rent brought her to Chinatown. They are serving a limited menu at this time but it's a different menu from what they served at the Ginger House. It kind of reminds me of the Kukui Cafe on River Street! They are still serving the duck and char siu and is made in house. That's what I got since the minute chicken was sold out. I decided not get the chicken wings since I like mines really crispy and wanted to try the Char Siu and Roast Duck! Sandy let me have a combo of both Roast Duck and Chair Siu on Cake noodles for $13 since I couldn't make up my mind between the two. They also have beef with black bean sauce over cake noodles too. The wait was not long at all since I called in my order. My food was ready upon arrival and she was nice enough to opened the container for me to take a picture! I was pleased and couldn't wait to try it! Even though she had the sauce separated, the cake noodles were not at all crunchy but I still enjoyed it. The char siu and roast duck were so delicious .. and it sure was tasty and tender! I haven't tried many other places but it juicy and not dried. It's not unusual for Chinese people to meet and greet each other by asking if they've eaten yet because it's a more casual and common way to ask, "how are you?" So it follows, when food-loving friends and family members get together, discussions about food or the latest food establishment always ensue over a meal. We were celebrating a friend's birthday with fellow Yelp Friends who we've not seen in months because of the pandemic when the topic of Chinese (Cantonese) cuisine popped up. Three of our friends seated nearby eagerly endorsed Sandy's Cafe, located in Chinatown's Chinese Cultural Plaza. They raved about the tender and perfectly roasted Chinese BBQ (char siu) pork belly at Sandy's Cafe. All three mentioned that one can ask for either lean or fat cuts, but whichever cut preference, they claimed the char siu would be tender and "cut like butter." My husband's interest perked up when they touted the deep-fried chicken wings appetizer. He joined the conversation by asking how many pieces per plate and if the wings were served whole or mixed drumettes and flats/wingettes. He was relieved to hear that the appetizer featured the wing flats/wingettes. The next day, as we set out to go for an urban hike, my husband suggested trying Sandy's Café in Chinatown instead of walking to Ala Moana or Waikīkī. I could tell that my husband ruminated all night about those deep-fried chicken wings. The restaurant is located along the Nuuanu Stream or the West side of the Cultural Plaza. Arriving at the crowded restaurant, we managed to be seated at the last available table facing the kitchen and butcher's display case. Service was friendly, and having perused the menu posted in the window, we ordered right away. We chose to order one item that our friends had recommended and two menu choices that no one else had posted. The server brought us glasses of iced water and disposable Western-style soup spoons, and bamboo chopsticks wrapped in plastic sandwich bags. We hope they'll bring out Asian-style soup spoons instead because to us, using a Western-style teaspoon to eat noodles in soup while using chopsticks was frustrating. FOOD: - Deep-fried chicken wings: eight crisp fried golden brown chicken wing flats/wingettes came hot from the fryer. I could see the steam rising from the wings as my husband picked one up with his chopsticks. Yeah, I did warn him, but he still took a bite and promptly dropped it back onto his plate. As he confirmed its freshness and serving temperature, he took a sip of his iced water. Meanwhile, the server delivered our entrées, and I took photos while waiting for the wings to cool before taking a piece. The chicken skin was crispy and didn't have breading or a battered crust. Its meat was tender, moist, and flavorful, although I thought it a bit salty (in a good way) as though the chicken had been brined. The wingettes were a hit with my husband, and I let him eat the rest of this appetizer. 8/$14 - Roast duck noodles in soup: the server brought my husband a small plate containing about 1/4 duck with a leg. The tasty seasoning and roasting of the duck were excellent, and the dense duck meat was tender and moist. Its mahogany-colored skin was fatty and thicker than fried chicken skin. The server then brought a large bowl of thin Hong Kong-style noodles in an aromatic clear broth. Upon tasting the broth, I could taste dried shrimp, ginger, chicken, salt (maybe soy sauce), and sesame seed oil. The noodles were medium-firm in texture and balanced the tender roasted duck meat. $15 - Pigs feet lo mein: okay, I gave into my penchant for pork meat even though I've cut back significantly because I've been working on lowering my cholesterol level. I was excited to see this on the menu because lo mein is dry tossed noodles and usually served with a bowl of steaming hot broth. The braised pig trotter was cut into four pieces. Each tender piece was flavored with star anise, cinnamon, soy sauce, and sugar. The trotter was so tender that I could easily pick out the bones with my chopsticks, and each bite into its fatty skin and moist meat had me smacking my lips because of the rich sticky collagen. Hahaha. I told my husband I felt my skin wrinkles plumped with each collagenous bite. I expected a bowl of broth to be served along with this dish, but none came. However, I looked around the restaurant and noticed others who ordered lo mein, and they weren't served a bowl of broth either. This dish was so full-bodied, I could only eat half portion and took the leftovers home. $16 We'll have to try other dishes in the future, but this first visit was tasty and generously portioned. At first glance, the menu seemed pricey, but we got what we paid for. I dinged them a star because after serving our meals, the server never returned to fill our water glasses or inquire if we needed any additional condiments, or bring us our bill. I absolutely LOVE Sandy's. The char siu (roast pork) can be a bit fattty butttt I'm a fatty so I low key love that. Haha . Otherwise the glaze is so tasty and nicely sticky but not tooooo stickly. PERFECT with the rice. The chicken with the rice cake noodle. Not even sure what it's called but it's a go to order in my opinion. Just comforting canto style food. Crispy and chew noodle cakes with gravy? On top. Parking on the street on Sunday's is free in china town. Cultural plaza also has a parking structure and I think Sandy's validates. Sorry I tried to go somewhere new because I was craving some roast duck and some chow fun. Unfortunately when I arrived they had neither, they said they ran out and I was there around lunch hour. Either they are super popular or they don't make a lot. Bummed but I said I'm here let me try something else. I got char siu and minute chicken over cake noodles and milk tea. The place has a lot of seats and there were a few patrons. I got seated pretty quickly and waited a while for the menu but then one of the 3 ladies realized I didn't have my order placed. Quickly I ordered what I wanted. The food came out rather quickly. Took one bite of that char siu and was shocked as to how sweet it was. I ate a few slices because I was on the verge of hanger. Then my noodles came out and looked fresh and good. I took one bite and I swear the cook's taste buds were off today. I saw all the reviews and say so good but it tastes like pure sugar and shoyu. A hidden gem!! Having eaten at super popular overhyped tourists spots the past days in Honolulu, we were pleasantly surprised with this restaurant. It's tucked behind the Chinatown Cultural Center, serving a variety of rice, noodles and wonton soup. They also have in house roasted duck and char siu! The space is well lit and clean, air-conditioned in the muggy summer weather. We ordered the rice with char siu and roasted duck, wonton soup and Spicy Singaporean Noodles. All are flavorful, come freshly made and delicious! The portion size is generous and the flavors are the best I have had in America, or at lease since my last time eating Cantonese food in NYC in 2017. The meat have the perfect balance of fat and lean, juicy and packed with flavors. They melt in your mouth... The wonton soup have huuuge dumplings, filled with shrimp and pork. And the broth was yummy yummy. Singaporean noodles are spicy, curry like flavored, has pork if I'm not mistaken and a few types of vegetables (napa, mushrooms and onions) My mom also ordered a hot lemon tea and they gave you four big slices of lemon, and it's not too sweet, which is always a plus. LEGIT Hong Kong cha chaaan teng food. I lived in Hong Kong for over 10 years and have tried most of the Chinese food in Honolulu, I was so excited to discover Sandy's and once I looked at the menu I was already drooling. Roast duck here rivals what you get in Hong Kong; the skin was perfectly crisp and the meat underneath was super tender. They have an open kitchen so if you look closely you will see they roast their meat in special oven that looks like a spaceship - I asked the chef and he told me it was specially imported from Hong Kong. That's commitment! Shredded pork with sze chuan pickles noodles was delicious as well. Generous portion and taste was spot on. I was full but had to order the French toast special as my dessert. Did not regret it - sweet peanut butter filling was a nice surprise! Oh and the milk tea - they make it the old fashioned way with the repeated multiple pours - very authentic! Well I was out riding bike and it started to rain so since I was near the Chinese Cultural Center I went to look for something warm to eat. I came across Sandy's Cafe and walked in. It looked nice and clean and so I sat down and ordered a Roast Duck Noodle soup. The Duck actually came in a separate plate and was one of the better roast ducks I've had. The noodles were Hong Kong style crunchy noodles and were perfect! with some Choi Sum inside with a sprinkling of green onions. They were pretty nice although they spoke a bit in English to me and then spoke to me in Cantonese (Which I don't understand at all) I just nodded since I had no idea what she said. I really liked the duck noodle soup and would love to go back again to try some of the other dishes. read more

A delicious Hong Kong restaurant in the heart of Chinatown at the cultural plaza! The interior is very clean and modernized and they even have a stall where you can see them prep, cook, and display the roast duck. Roast duck and char sui rice plate. This plate was $15 and it was worth every penny. Their roast duck was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside and overall some of the best roast duck I've had. Their char siu was sweet and salty and cooked amazing as the outside was caramelized and gave it more flavor. We also got their beef chow fun and another whole order of duck because it was so good! The beef chow fun was seasoned and cooked for perfection. The only thing I wish they did with this dish is that they kept the noodles long instead of cutting them into small pieces. Authentic and delicious Hong Kong style cafe in the Chinatown Cultural Plaza. This place is great for small get togethers or quick lunches away from the office. Most of the time my order consists of two of the following: 1. Lemon black iced tea 2. Roast Duck with a side of Cold Ginger Sauce The tea is not too sweet and is perfectly refreshing with large slices of lemon added in. The duck is also juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside. Personally, I enjoy adding the ginger dressing that typically comes with the gold ginger chicken. Either way, you can't go wrong with any of the items on the menu... Parking: There is a parking lot connected to the plaza with plenty of stalls available. BUT... My car has previously been broken into while parked at this lot, so please be careful if there are any valuables left behind. read more

This has been my favorite fried rice place before, during and after the pandemic. They have the best char siu and shrimp fried rice I've ever had in the islands. Their meat and shrimp are fresh, so they're moist, have a lot of flavor and juicy. I love that they put a lot of eggs in the fried rice, some other place put more sauce than egg to cheapen their fried rice. You can taste the oysters sauce and the char siu sauce in the fried rice. They give very big take out portions, at least one to two cups of rice in their containers. Depending on how hungry I am, I can finish the whole thing in a day but sometimes it takes two days. I think they only give about one cup of rice for fried rice now. Their fried chow fun noodles are also good to eat, a little salty so you'll need to put a little sugar when reheating it. The waitresses are very nice and friendly that is unlike to a lot Chinese restaurants. The place is very clean which is unlike a lot of Chinese restaurants. What a hidden gem! We came here to send my mother off for a quick lunch before her 10 hour flight back to the East Coast. I've walked by this place many times, but never stopped in- but boy I'm glad i did! We got the Char Siu/Duck rice, Char Siu/soya sauce chicken rice, and the baked pork chop rice. They told us the only char siu was the extra fatty marbled cuts today - YUM!! Each piece was properly marinaded, and bbq'd to perfection- just like Hong Kong Style. The Duck was Crisp, with just the right amount of seasoning and you could taste the 5 spice. So good! The pork chop rice was good. I'm usually not a fan of pork chop rice, but this one was good. First place in Hawaii that I am checking in and writing a review. First this place is so HK authentic. The milk tea is just like what the other reviews said, extremely delicious (and traditional). They use stocking (clean) to put in the kettle to filter the tea to make it silky smooth, boy aren't we lucky to get this in Honolulu? Super pumped to get Hong Kong breakfast, eggs, spams, noodle with toast! My bf got the salt and pepper pork with noodle breakfast, also looks and taste hella bomb with chilli pepper flakes (not spicy). Super Covid friendly (waiter gave us individual utensils in zip lock bags， condiments are all in little plastic boxes) with free in door parking. I got the roast duck and char siu combo over rice for $15. Both meats were flavorful, marbled, soft, and juicy. A good price for amount and quality. The char siu had that crunchy caramelized exterior that makes it worth coming back for. Spicy wonton was also good - it came in a shallow broth that wasn't very spicy which I liked. Wonton we're plump and juicy - lots of pork and shrimp. Called in order 10 minutes before I arrived and it was ready when I got there. I had a hard time finding it from the Google Map location. I loveeeeeeeee the blend of flavors here. I ordered the baked pork chop rice from here and it was delicious - a perfect blend of sweet, slightly sour, and savory. It's my go-to every time. My favorite go to breakfast / lunch place! Decent price, great food and lots of different items to choose from. Service is alright but the food makes up for it. Love their toast with butter & condensed milk, won ton rice noodle and roast duck on rice. So flavorful. read more

After today's encounter, I won't be back. I wanted to order their papaya dessert drink and walk in and stood in front of the showcase. 3 waitress notice me but none of them acknowledge me. They look busy serving food although the room only half filled. The female owner stand behind the showcase area but didn't ask if I need help. Instead a guy came in after me, stood in the kitchen area everyone acknowledge him. Then the owner turn and talk to him and I wave my hand wanna said I want to do an order, but she ignore me and turn away again. Very horrible service plus the food taste so so. I ordered their tomato baked spaghetti, couldn't finish because taste so bland. read more

Delicious. Not cheap but can't get this good if cheap. Shared minute chicken with cake noodles, char siu, and won tons with chili sauce. Inc 20% tip was $34 a piece (inc tax). Highly recommend and a place to go to again. read more
