Stopped by to eat here as a party of 7 on a Friday late morning. We were seated right away and immediately offered a variety of dim sum dishes from the carts that the employees push around the room. You can never really go wrong with dim sum at the Cultural Plaza in Chinatown. Legend Seafood Restaurant has been around for many years. And they've been around for many years for a reason! The taste of the dim sum is great and exactly what you'd expect it to be. They have a very wide variety that you can choose from. They also offer cooked main dishes of food entrees that you can order for the table as well. If you're not used to the dim sum experience in Hawaii, you may find yourself a bit overwhelmed by the employees asking you to try/take more dim sum dishes. This is standard. Just respectfully decline if you do not want what they are offering. The seating area at the restaurant is very large. The tables are round with a lazy susan in the middle so it is good for large groups. Also, the larger the group, the more food you can try! Since it is family style. Parking for the cultural plaza is in their parking garage. It can get fairly busy but I have never not been able to find a spot. The rates are decently priced. What a fun place to have dim sum / yum cha!!! Located conveniently in the Chinese cultural plaza, this place is like your typical Chinese restaurant with large round tables and many workers who speak minimal English. Service is fine and older kapunas trying to place everything from their carts to our tables. They have the typical hot mustard but one big difference compared to the mainland is that they don't have chili oil. Little dim sum tastes fine. No wow factor but good enough for this area. Things tasted like they're previously frozen but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Majority of dim sum places do pre make little dumplings and freeze them or buy them previously frozen. I was happy with the food that we've received a minimal complaints. Although the had to wait 40-50 minutes for our waters (probably asked 4-5 different wait staff members), it's not that bad. I haven't been here in years, since it got sold to new owners. We recently hosted two tables of the 10 course dinners. We actually did this for lunch. We also switched out some of the dishes for an uncharge. We went with the Joyful Dinner $318 per table. It came with Chinese Chicken Salad with Jelly Fish, Seafood Tofu Soup, House Roast Duck, Honey Walnut Shrimp, Deep Fried Pork Chop with Pepper Salt, Stir Fried Fish Fillet with Veggies, Stir Fried Seasonal Veggies with Garlic, Young Chow Fried Rice, and Almond Tofu for dessert. We switched out two of the items. Instead of the Pepper Salt Pork Chops, we got the Capital Pork Chops. We also subbed out the Young Chow fried rice for the Salted Fish and Chicken Fried Rice. It was $325 instead of $318. We had made reservations and pre-ordered the week before. On the day of the lunch, the tables were ready when we got there. The seating was a little tight though. Since we had pre-ordered, the food came out really fast. We could barely keep up. We were beginning on one dish and another would be coming out of the kitchen. Majority of the dishes were excellent. Service is mostly good but it can be a little chaotic with the food carts. I still enjoy the food carts, even if you have to wait for what you want to come by. Finally get to try it because it's always crowded around lunch time during weekends! We went on a Sunday around 9:30am and there's no wait, but around 10:30 to 11, the place got more and more packed, so that gives you an idea what time to arrive to avoid crowds! Their steamed items like chicken feet, spinach dumplings and shumai were quite good. I also liked their pan fried chive and shrimp cakes. However their deep fried stuff were not as fresh as I hoped, probably coz they were in cart for a little bit, not freshly cooked from the kitchen - that's why I normally prefer ordering dim sum with the paper than with the carts nowadays for the freshness of food. Decent old school chinese food on the edge of Chinatown. Lunch crowd is almost exclusively locals who look like they've been coming here for years. The restaurant is large with little ambience but the food is good. I would recommend skipping the dim sum, which was okay, but the traditional dishes are far better. Since we had been eating around Chinatown all morning prior to arriving, we only had room for one more dish after trying a few of the dim sum options - the mixed seafood chow mein. The portion size was enormous. The seafood was fresh and varied. The thin noodles were perfect and there was ample gravy. I see why the locals keep coming back. The dim sum menu at Legends is extensive, boasting a wide array of tried and true creations. From the classic har gow, steamed pork buns, and shrimp dumplings, to some more adventurous options, there's something for every appetite. As trolley after trolley comes by you have to be careful not to over order. There's also a formidable ala carte menu. A particular favorite of ours is the ginger rice. That by itself brought us back. The shrimp shumai had good flavor, but the wrapper was a little rubbery. The baked manapua had an unusual sour taste today that didn't sit right. On the bright side, the taro puffs were excellent, and the xiao long bao were solid, especially with the red vinegar sauce they served on the side. Sorry never like to bash a business. I think they were extra busy because Fook Lam is closed for the month of April. I understand that it's hard to get staffing these days, but maybe they should close off a potion of the restaurant to be more manageable. They filled all the tables. We ordered one basket of pork hash and then never saw the cart again for 25 minutes. The carts were empty and when food came out, they could not make it around the restaurant. Since moving back home, I have been trying to find a good dim sum place that's hectic/chaotic with the carts going around (something about the experience makes it so much better). My brother suggested my husband take me there for our anniversary and as soon as we walked in, I was excited. It looked very busy but were seated right away. I have been to Legends several times for dim sum and it is my 4th favorite place. Which is to say it is delicious and I highly recommend it as my top 3 are better IMHO although all are great. You need to choose quickly for dim sum don't be afraid to ask for clarification on something that is unfamiliar to you. Just don't dawdle or hem and haw. It is a fun place to go with 2-4 people, so the bill isn't difficult to split. Paying is convenient, you take your bill to the register at the back so you can leave as soon as you are finished. I can't recommend anything in particular because everything I've had is good. I typically like to try familiar dumplings and bao, plus 1-2 things that are unfamiliar. Came over to Legend because Fook Lam is closed for the month of April. Went first thing in the morning at 8 o'clock, and the restaurant was empty. It's really big inside. We didn't get to order anything until about 8:15 because I guess they weren't expecting us to be there so early. The cards didn't come out until 820. The service was as you would expect, not as attentive, even though there were only three tables eating at 8 o'clock in the morning. They do not serve a regular menu that early on, they only serve dim sum. Only one cart came around that early and they had a decent selection of dim sum. The dim sum, in my opinion was mediocre. The flavors were either Overpowering and salty or they didn't give in any sauces unless you asked. I will say that the shrimp wonton was actually the highlight because the shrimp in the fried wonton was pretty big. This definitely isn't at the top of my list for dim sum places. read more

Typical traditional Chinese restaurant. The place looks dated and seems popular with the older Chinese crowd. We were there attending a wedding reception. They served us a 9 course dinner. They served seafood soup, steamed blue cod, cold ginger chicken, orange chicken?, roast duck, lobster, shrimp, spinach, fried rice, and tapioca. All the food tasted alright although I don't recall anything that was outstanding. I was so hungry that I forgot to take photos of the food. The service was lacking. We initially had to request water and then later had to request tea refills. It took a really long time to get the 1st course and then when the courses started coming in there were too many courses arriving at the same time so we had to combine dishes to make them fit on the lazy susan turntable. There was a another function that was just slightly larger in size to ours but the built in PA system was for the entire restaurant and that kind of held us hostage for the duration of their ceremony. This is our "go to" place for dim sum if we're downtown. Legend has dim sum carts so you can see what to order even though you may not know the appropriate name! So much variety and selection to choose from. We ordered the usual siu mai (pork hash) , har gau ( shrimp dumplings), black bean spareribs, white book tripe which was tough, and needed to be cooked more! Our host wanted scallops with spinach. I ordered the tender juicy chicken feet! For dessert we got the egg whites custard tarts which are very healthy and just as good as the yellow egg tarts! Dim sum at Legend Seafood Restaurant is good again? I believe so! The word of mouth currently is that it's not good, but my previous experience says otherwise. There's some new faces, and possibly--(probably)-- a new dim sum chef since the last time I've been here. Prices are kinda whatever they want to stamp. Some are medium, some are x-medium, some are large, and it seems like nothing is actually small. Typical pricing from $4.45 to $6.45. Small is $3.45, but what's that?? When I went, there weren't many dim sum baskets in the cart, and a majority was steamed to order or in the process of steaming, which was great as everything was hot and fresh. The Steamed Beef Look Funn was excellent. Thin and moist look Funn that had a nice texture and consistency filled with juicy and tasty beef. Steamed Spareribs were quite tender and tasty with flavorful fermented black beans and garlic. The Steamed Beef Balls were amazing! It had a pink hue when it arrived at the table. Is it not fully cooked? Nope! It was perfectly cooked! I'll take this over brown anytime. The texture was very good. Firm and meaty, and also quite juicy and tasty. The Pan Fried Chives Cake was exceedingly good. Pan fried to a very nice crisp, and packed with tasty and flavorful filling with a generous amount of shrimp. The Fried Mochi Puff was excellent! Fried to a nice, not oily crisp with tasty and generous filling. The Mochi was perfect--not too soft and not too firm Bean Curd Roll has become a favorite of mines, but no one else's. I like how the bean curd roll is soft and soaks up the tasty sauce. This was packed with pork filling that had a nice meaty texture and a lot of other ingredients. Lastly, my favorite, chicken feet, were very good. Soft, plump, meaty, tasty, and quite flavorful with the savoriness of the fermented black bean and soy, umami from the oyster sauce, and slight sweetness from the sugar. Overall, this was a surprisingly top notch dim sum experience. Everything was freshly made, piping hot, well seasoned and well prepared, and even the service was excellent. This restaurant is a staple in the cultural center plaza. It is always crowded so pro tip make reservations if you're going with a bigger party. The service was good once we were seated. Some dishes took awhile to come and it took some time to get more water and tea throughout our meal. However, the dim sum was good, we tried an assortment of dishes and nothing disappointed. I'd definitely come back here for dim sum. read more
