It was the day before my best friend's birthday. We met up to catch up, walk around, and find a…read moregood spot to eat. We ventured to Flama Llama, delighted by the wonderful atmosphere and friendly service. What I was not mentally prepared for was the most enlightening culinary venture that I would ever undergo. Flama Llama provided for my companion and I both a satisfying afternoon meal, and perhaps the most poignant dining experience I have enjoyed thus far in my life. The meat was tender and juicy. The vegetables more flavorful than I ever thought possible. The noodles seasoned to perfection. The chicha morada subtly sweet and divinely slaking. And the sauce -- the sauce was orgasmic. I used to not believe those who claimed that good food tells a story. Before this meal I was blind, but now I see the truth. Tension, melancholy, tenacity, and elation. So rich in intensity and meaning. To descibe in human tongue this meal that transcends language would be a disservice to its biblical splendor. I can only in good faith describe the effect that it had on me. I have never cleaned my plate like I did in this restaurant. I have never performed with such steadfast resolve. I have never been turned into a beast of a man and immediately satiated by such postprandial bliss. I was a mad, esurient dog, and Flama Llama's cuisine a gentle hand guiding me to fulfillment. How the sweet meal sang to me, beckoning me into this nirvana like Saint Peter at the pearly gates. This world is a savage one, but the food at Flama Llama has reminded me that no matter how crestfallen, no matter how mired in anguish we as humans have become, beauty endures. I am, in all likelihood, Flama Llama's #1 fan. Still, I wish I knew enough about cooking or creation of any kind so that I could appreciate it more. I wish I had it in me to become so skilled at preparing food that I could develop something even remotely close to this. And while I have my eye on other endeavors, I will never stop being inspired by Flama Llama. Such artistry I will be hard pressed to find elsewhere. I can only hope that one day I will be responsible for something that touches someone as deeply as this food has touched me. An incredible experience if ever one there was. I may no longer seek love from a human companion because I have found everything I need at this establishment. I do not say this lightly: Flama Llama has changed the course of my life forever. afterwards we went to costco and got a hotdog and it was pretty good too

The Crudo (sashimi) was incredibly fresh with the perfect spicy, garlicky kick. Fresh ingredients, unique Peruvian-inspired dishes, and excellent execution. We'll definitely be back!

I was not a fan but if you like that smoky flavor you might enjoy it. i ordered a 1/2 chicken and a 1/4 chicken. One was supposed to come with fries and salad and the other just salad. We ended up with 2 1:2 chickens all with salad. Pretty sure though i tried my best to order in spanish , we had some pretty serious communication issues. Water was not free and they charge a small credit card fee. The servers were very sweet. The price for the chicken and two waters with tip was about $50.

I have driven through rougher parts of this neighborhood, however this plaza was well kept, and I felt safe during my visit. The inside had bare bones decor with folding chairs and tables for seating. Menu sheets were available in several spots. One side featured breakfast, drinks, and desserts. The other side listed the soups and entrees (beef, chicken, seafood). Although I could not find it on the menu, the man said Lomo Saltado was available which I ordered. I also selected a Causa Rellenade Pollo as an appetizer and a second entree, Aji de Gallina. The couple went to the kitchen to prepare my food while I waited. The promotional photos looked much more polished than what I received in styrofoam takeout containers. The Causa Rellenade Pollo had the most authentic appearance of my items. It was a layered mini casserole folded into a triangular shape. The top and bottom consisted of yellow potato with white chicken meat in the middle. The Lomo Saltado contained white rice on one side and then a stir fry of marinated strips of sirloin with onions, tomatoes, and french fries along the top. The flavor lacked the strong vinegar and soy sauce I have tasted in this dish at other restaurants. The Aji de Gallina was a stew made by sautéing red onion, garlic, and ají amarillo together. Shredded poached chicken meat was then added. The combination was then thickened with cheese or milk. Half of a hard boiled egg garnished the top. This entree had the best taste of the trio because there was a good balance of tartness and savoriness. When it came time to paying my check, the cost was slightly higher than what was posted on the menu. I didn't want to dispute the charges as I felt bad because the owners seemed to be struggling for more patronage. With the mixed experience I had with the food I sampled, I gave a 3.5 star rating for Chimpum Callao Peruvian Restaurant.

I don't eat a lot but these two meals filled me up 4x. Now I could have ate it all in 3, but I would have been stuffed! Oh and I got my hubby arroz con leche. He was eating at home since I was just in San Diego for dr appt, but I wanted him to enjoy dessert from here. Of course I got two chichas as well, one for the drive home and the other for while I eat my meal. Don't let prices scare you. It's expensive everywhere. I was quickly seated and able to choose any table I wanted, so I picked a little spot in the corner where I could enjoy some much-needed "me time" during my vacation while my daughter played at the beach. I asked what she thought would suit the mood for my solo lunch date, and she immediately raved about the empanada and sangria, so of course I went with her recommendations. The empanada was absolutely phenomenal, and I'm so glad I listened to her! I also enjoyed the two sauces it came with and the salad. It adds a nice touch to the hefty little beef empanada (also packed with flavor!) I also have to mention the ambiance. The seating is so cute, there's plenty of shade, and you're right by the beach. It's giving relaxation, positive vibes, and genuinely great food. Hawaiian reggae is playing and it's definitely a sign to come back because it's my favorite genre. I already know I'll be coming back the next time I visit San Diego because there's so much more I want to try here. The squid ink ravioli is at the top of my list, along with the baby chicken and the chef's choice soup of the day. Bella, thank you for making my afternoon brighter than I anticipated. From a mom who really needed a little break, a delicious meal, and a great conversation with a stranger, I cannot thank you enough. You made my solo lunch date feel extra special. See you again when I'm back!

AMBIANCE Parking: Liberty Station parking--pretty manageable but can get busy during peak hours. Seating: Shared seating throughout the public market, so it might take a minute to find a table. Vibes: Welcome to Liberty Station! A festive area pretty much throughout the week. Whether its a place to eat, partaking in a event, or just hanging out - this is your spot. The area itself is a lively food hall energy with. It's not a sit-down restaurant vibe, but more of a grab-your-food-and-find-a-seat kind of experience. A lot of options around, but this spot holds its own with bold Peruvian flavors. FOOD / DRINKS Pesto (Tallarinines Verde) Chicken (Recommend) Solid dish. Rich portion - huge piece of chicken and good amount of pasta mixed well with that herb-forward pesto sauce (Tallarinines Verde) - with a more creamy + umami-forward than your usual pesto It's a bit of a fusion take compared to traditional Peruvian dishes, but still flavorful and satisfying. Good portion and definitely filling. Chicha Morada (Recommend) Refreshing and smooth. Slightly sweet with those subtle spice notes (like cinnamon/clove vibes), which makes it a perfect balance to the savory food. A classic Peruvian drink and a must-try if it's your first time. SERVICE Quick and efficient--typical of a market-style setup. You order, grab your food, and go. TL;DR OVERALL 4 Stars. Good selections, delicious food, and steady vibes. Good spot for casual Peruvian food while exploring Liberty Station. It leans more quick-service + accessible rather than a full sit-down experience, but the flavors still come through. The chicha morada is a must, and the pesto chicken is a solid pick if you want something filling. Best wishes to Chefs - Fredy, Tony, and the rest of the Latin Chef team!
