Literally THE BEST Greek food I have ever eaten! I was craving Mediterranean food and came across this cafe while visiting the museums at Balboa Park. Homemade, fresh and delicious. I enjoyed everything and even took leftovers, as the portions are big. I was mesmerized by the fantastic lemon soup with rice and their salad with fresh Feta cheese. The owner is very sweet and gave great suggestions on portion-wise what to order. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The cafe is quaint and the walls are covered in beautiful photos of Greece, as well as appreciation plaques from the community.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] This is the only Greek restaurant that I will visit here in San Diego. read more

I've been coming to Alexi's for years--honestly close to a decade by now. I came most recently last night, and I hadn't been in quite a while. Everything was as I remembered. The owner is extremely friendly. The food is classic Greek cafe/diner food. My friend and I ordered a gyro pita sandwich, a small Greek salad, and a chicken kabob with a side of tzatziki. Everything was awesome! The meats were seasoned and flavorful, the salad super fresh, and the tzatziki was incredibly well-crafted. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This is a low-key, no-frills Greek joint in the heart of an overly gentrified area, but it holds its own and has for years.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The interior isn't going to wow you, but it will transport you back to the 90s and make you feel like you're at home and welcome.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Definitely come by and try out some of the items! What a value! Had the Mediterranean plate and it came with split pea soup (delicious) and a salad with crisp cucumbers, lettuce, salad, red onion and tomatoes (yum). the meal itself was warm tasty gyros, fresh pita and chicken hot off the grill which was perfectly cooked, moist and tasty. Best bang for your buck! Delicious greek spanakopita and avgolemono soup! I don't want to tell you how reasonable the prices are because I don't want them to suddenly go up! [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's not easy to see from the street at all, so I have missed it for years.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Recently I started shopping nearby and discovered the narrow storefront and had to give it a try. They took care to pack my hot food and keep the cold sauce separate, and gosh the hot food stayed hot all the way home- it was still nearly too hot to eat! The spanakopita was generously filled and a much bigger slice with a better proportion of filling to phyllo than anywhere else I've tried. Their Tzatziki is nice and thick, not the watery goop you find at big chains. The soup was also generously loaded with rice and tangy lemony flavor. Really happy we decided to eat here. Not sure if the person who served us was the owner but he sure loves what he does. He has so much love for his community, knows his customers, he's super friendly, and provides outstanding customer service. Treated us like we were regular's and it was our first time dining there. No wonder he has so many happy customers. Dinner was literally like a gift that just kept on giving. We first had soup, and than they came out with a salad. And we had our main dinner. We chose the Mediterranean dinner special. It came with a gyro and chicken souvlaki, with your choice of rice pilaf or fries. All for $26! (2 people) It was the perfect dinner. First, the guy serving us was working his butt off! Taking orders , waiting tables, serving food, bussing.. thank you sir ! Service was excellent, as was the food. We ordered beef and chicken platters and a hummus app. Meats had delicious grilled flavor, the pita bread, tasziki, dressing on our salads were so good! The pita bread was warm and flavorful. I went in yesterday and the food itself was good, but the service was very disappointing. When I was ordering, the server rushed me, wasn't clear about the sides that came with my plate, and when I asked a simple question he told me I 'wasn't ready' and moved on to another customer instead of helping me understand the menu. Later, when I asked about Apple Pay, he cut me off and spoke in a rude, impatient tone, then still expected a tip. I didn't feel respected as a customer and I won't be coming back. Staff should be more patient and clear with customers instead of rushing them. read more

What finally led me to come and leave a review was because I went to the new Halal guys next door, and it left me so underwhelmed and disappointed that I immediately went next door and got a Gyro from Alexi's before leaving the area. Their food is amazing, and the people are always so amazingly nice. If you're coming up to try Halal Guys and are looking for a Gyro pita or platter, come here instead. You won't be disappointed. I've been going there for years, same guy,same food, almost the same price. Always leave a healthy tip, because it's always the same industrious, hard working guy. Today I asked for the check and he just told me, and he's done that before. I took out the cash and wasn't comfortable just leaving it on the table, so I went to the counter and took my empty plate and glass. That's when he went off on me and it seemed to go on forever. He could have just said "just leave your stuff on the table next time. " Well, to be honest, I don't think there will ever be a next time. This place used to be mediocre at best, on a good day. Now it's turned to total shit. A decent Gyro is always supposed to be sliced thin, but not here, and they actually take the Gyro meat and place it on the hot grill. This, of course, drys the meat and takes away all the juices. Never a smile or even a hello, I say hello, no response from the owner. This dude is only in business because of the excellent location, his Cusine has nothing to do with keeping the lights on. This is a very late review for Alexi's since I've been coming here for almost 10 years and never written one. The food is classic Greek diner - it's fast, delicious, and affordable! I get the gyro sandwich with fries biweekly and the saganaki when I eat in (it's dinner and a show - trust me). [[HIGHLIGHT]]My guess is that the ambiance prevents this place from getting 5 stars - it's a diner - fluorescent lighting and difficult to see from the street.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] But you and I are here for the food, right?
