    Chilaquiles with steak
    Jennifer E.

I was really craving some Chilaquiles, so I decided to try this place out during my lunch break. I have never been here before, and let's just say I'm so GLAD I chose this location. It was empty when I got there and was immediately greeted by the friendly host and waitress. Everyone was super nice. The ambiance inside was great. Even though it was during lunch hours, the music was awesome, and the place was super clean and put together. The food came out in a timely manner, and everything was DELICIOUS! I ordered the Mexican chilaquiles in red salsa, with rice, beans, avocado, and fried cheese. It was so delicious! The steak was perfectly marinated and very tasteful. I will definitely be coming back to try different items on their menu. They have a wide variety of different foods. They also have a drive-thru window, which was a first for me for a Mexican place, but I feel like that's great, especially if you're running on a short time for lunches. I definitely recommend this location if you're ever in the area.

So weird how similar this experience was to my previous one. Both claimed to be super authentic. Both were disappointing to me but delicious for my partner. Maybe I'm just ordering the wrong things, I don't know. Decor inside was nice and the service was great. No cervasas so you are starting out down a star already with me. Queso was great, guacamole and pico were okay. Regular and salsa picante were above average. I just wasn't pleased with my entree. Choripollo seems hard to mess up but my chicken was dry and my beans and rice needed more flavor. As much as I disliked mine, my wife loved hers. Her shrimp tacos were delicious and her tamal was probably the best I've ever tasted. So there you go again, another mixed review. Maybe I should just start letting my meal mates order for me!

Just based on the outside of the restaurant alone I was a little skeptical of this place, but that was because I did not understand the concept. I think this is a first: an authentic Mexican restaurant with a drive through! This is not Taco Bell type of fast food. This is actually really good! I ordered the tamale and the chicken Gordita and plantains! All of it was fantastic! The prices were great as well! All 3 items were about $12. The only thing I wish they had was a drink menu. A nice margarita would have perfect with this meal! I definitely recommend this place! I am already excited to come back and try more items on their menu!

Santa Fe has potential to be my new favorite Mexican in Charlotte. I want to go back again before I make that claim but the first impression was great! I came with a group and everyone got something different. Everyone I was with loved their meal! The enchiladas, plantains, tacos, tamales, and Gorditas were all amazing. Everything was very fresh and authentic. The staff is very friendly. They have a drive through that is open late as well! What more can you ask for? Real Mexican food that you can get quick late at night! The only recommendation and downside is their chips and salsa. They aren't bad, just nothing special.

Been in Charlotte 8 years and have had our fair share of Mexican food. Santa Fe just blew all of them out of the water. Best Mexican food in Charlotte. So incredibly fresh and hot even with doing Togo. The fajitas were cooked to perfection with lots of veggies and chicken. We will 100% be going back often!

Definitely the best, most authentic, accessible Mexican in Charlotte! While the service could use some work and the employees were all sitting around on their phones the food makes up for it. We moved to Charlotte a year ago from Southern California and have been missing our Mexican food so much so it's nice to have a little piece of home in Charlotte!

With its subdued lighting, faded brick walls and tightly packed tables, it's the perfect spot to escape with a bottle of tequila on a rainy Friday night. But if your circumstances aren't quite so desperate, Que Onda is also a great destination for an intimate date night or an evening with friends. On a recent visit, my wife and I started with a bowl of chips and queso, accompanied by a pair of oversized house margaritas. When I complained to our server about my drink's disappointing lack of kick, he took it off the bill and recommended the far superior Patron Cadillac Margarita, which improved my mood in a hurry. For dinner, I dove into a delicious taco combo platter of steak, carnitas and baja fish, while my wive enjoyed a tasty Taco Salad. Service was outstanding throughout our meal, the prices were reasonable, and the ambiance superb. Well worth a visit if you're looking for solid Mexican food and margaritas in Charlotte.

Tacos El Nevado came highly recommended, so I headed over for lunch with high hopes. The restaurant was packed when I arrived around 1:30 p.m., which is usually a good sign. It appears to be a converted fast-food building with its own parking lot, outdoor patio, and a casual, family-friendly atmosphere. Despite the Charlotte heat pushing triple digits, the dining room was comfortable and bustling. Service was friendly from the start, and I was quickly seated with ice water, lemon, fresh chips, and three house-made salsas. The chips were excellent--fresh, crisp, and clearly made in-house. The standout salsa for me was the red salsa, which packed plenty of heat and flavor. There was also a tomatillo salsa and a creamy green avocado-style salsa. Both were good, although the tomatillo leaned a little too tart for my taste. The menu is extensive, with everything from seafood dishes and quesadillas to tacos and larger combination plates. As someone who loves sampling a little of everything, I was hoping for more traditional combo options, but this menu takes a different approach. I ordered the crispy taco plate with rice and beans. The presentation was attractive, with the tacos served upright in a metal rack alongside refried beans and Mexican rice. The rice and beans were both delicious and easily the highlight of the plate. Where things got mixed for me was the taco filling. I was expecting a straightforward seasoned ground beef taco, but the beef filling tasted more like a guisado-style preparation with a softer texture and a slightly tangy flavor profile. It may simply be a regional style or a misunderstanding when ordering, but it wasn't what I had anticipated. The chicken taco, however, was excellent. Tender, flavorful, and clearly made with higher-quality chicken than you typically find in a crispy taco. After trying it, I immediately wished I had ordered all chicken. While this visit didn't completely win me over, I don't think it's fair to judge a restaurant by one dish. The packed dining room, friendly service, fresh chips, excellent salsas, and strong chicken taco all suggest there's more to explore here. Next time, I'd skip the crispy beef tacos and dive into the street tacos or some of the house specialties that seem to be what many regulars were ordering. Tacos El Nevado didn't become my favorite Mexican restaurant in Charlotte on this visit, but it earned a second chance. Life is too short not to eat well, Charlotte. Keep exploring. Sometimes the next great meal is just one menu item away.

But I have to start with a small heartbreak: my beloved puffy taco is gone. I grew up in San Antonio, Texas, where the puffy taco was created, and it's deeply nostalgic for me. It's not a sope, not a tostada--it's a true puffy taco, light, airy, and unlike anything else. For a long time, Superica made one that came remarkably close to what I grew up with. Unfortunately, after changes in leadership and kitchen management, it quietly disappeared from the menu. That was a real disappointment. That said, I still come back--because the food here is consistently good. The crispy tacos with picadillo are my current favorite. Picadillo (P-I-C-A-D-I-L-L-O) is a traditional Latin dish with many regional variations, and this version reminds me of the one my grandmother used to make in San Antonio. The portions are generous, the flavors are balanced, and the menu offers something for everyone--from enchiladas and chile rellenos to steaks and fresh tableside guacamole. Speaking of guacamole, I'm a purist. I like it simple: avocado, jalapeño, cilantro, lime, garlic--chunky and clean. Superica delivers on that. The chips and salsa are bottomless, the salsa has great depth of flavor, and for those who like heat, they offer a tiny dropper of hot sauce that is smoky, bold, and absolutely not for the faint of heart. The ginger margarita is another standout. It comes with a generous piece of crystallized ginger and has a bright, balanced flavor that makes it easy to order a second one. And if you have room for dessert, do not skip the tres leches cake--rich, decadent, and a perfect way to end the meal. I also appreciate the little touches here: * Friendly, knowledgeable waitstaff * A lively bar area that's great for happy hour * A beautiful outdoor patio that makes al fresco dining feel special * And a fun tradition of sending you home with a packaged Texas praline This South End location is my personal favorite. It feels more adult and relaxed, while the Strawberry Hill location tends to be more family-heavy. Both are good, but the vibe here suits me better. Yes, prices have crept up a bit--as they have everywhere--but the quality, consistency, and atmosphere keep me coming back. And as someone who travels frequently for work across multiple states, I appreciate that Superica maintains a dependable standard wherever I encounter it. Bottom line: Even without the puffy taco, Superica remains one of my favorite Tex-Mex spots in Charlotte. Come hungry, bring friends, share plates--and as always, travel safe and eat well.
