We ate here during our vacation because we both love Japanese food. The miso soup was really good. The maguro was good. The wasabi was excellent. The shrimp and vegetable tempura was good. The sukiyaki was mediocre and fell short of being real sukiyaki. They used a clump of glutenous egg noodles instead of cellophane noodles, no fish cakes, the meat was a lot thicker and tougher than it should have been and there was a *lot* of thickly sliced tofu as well. The broth was excellent though. My husband was unimpressed with their caterpillar roll (we're from Texas so the avocado didn't measure up to our norm). He was also unimpressed with his chicken teriyaki dish. He said the chicken was dry and bland and there wasn't enough rice or sauce. This place could have easily had four stars if a) the service had been more attentive (it was pretty slow that night) and stayed on top of our water and tea refills and b) the chicken teriyaki and the caterpillar roll hadn't been so disappointing. There are a few other sushi joints in the immediate area so I would try one of those before going back to Sapporo but it wouldn't be unheard of for me to go back and try their lunch specials. Those seem to get some really good reviews so maybe I missed their specialty service by going for dinner. read more

Their unagi don looks tiny but the amount is big enough to feel full. The eels are tender and flavorful. The rice is mixed with a little seaweed, sesame and sauce but a bit sour though. We went up to Portland and had heard that there was great sushi in the Old Port area. We found ourselves at Sapporo at the sushi bar - lucky for us! The sushi chef was super friendly and accommodating! He made a ceviche salad of white fish, cabbage, and sesame oil and vinegar on the house. It was so good!! A great way to tease our appetites. I started the meal with miso soup. It was really, really good! Yum - can you say umami? I also had the cucumber roll and the crunchy spicy tuna roll (my favorite!). The cucumber roll was good - I have had better, but it was good. The crunchy tuna roll was awesome! It was spicy, and it was crunchy (tempura flakes)! Plus, there was a lot of tuna! It wasn't all mixed up with mayo, either. It was big pieces of lovely tuna - so, so good!! I finished off the meal with an order of green tea ice cream (my favorite ice cream flavor!). I have had better - some parts seemed a little icy, but the flavor was good. He had abalone - which is rare to see on this coast. It turns out that we aren't really fans. For me, it was everything I dislike about clams and oysters, plus, it is tough. He enjoyed it for a bit but had difficulty eating it all. He also tried Striped Jack, which he loved!! Sapporo is a top notch sushi joint, mostly due to the quality of the fish. They buy a lot of their stock from Browne Trading just down the street, which is always fantastic. I also like the way they do their shiitake rolls - they marinate the mushrooms rather than fry in tempura, and they are delicious. As far as ambiance, they've really done a lot in recent years to spruce up the place, and it's actually quite classy these days. It can get pricey if you don't keep an eye out - if you're there with one or two other people, the bill can quickly grow to three figures, so be careful. read more

Got VERY sick from the Sushi! Eaten there 20 times and never been sick, but on New Year's eve I got some very bad Sushi! Never been so sick... Mayo smelled bad in one of the rolls another time and I mentioned it and they said, "it ok, normal". I passed and that was the last time we went.... Owner was rude when I mentioned it to him and did not seem to care. He actually moved us away from people so they would not hear us if we talked about it. The staff Is very attentive and they have beautiful salt water fish tanks. I have been about 4 times now and was always satisfied. Every time I've gone I've tried something new and everything is stellar. The only reason it did not get five stars is because It is always cold. Not a big deal if you wear a heavy sweater or have a light jacket. Its proabably more comfortable in the summer. It is very clean and has nice decor. I look forward to visiting again. read more

Sapporo is a great bang for your buck sushi spot. The happy hour menu is spot on with drink and food specials. At lunch, they offer a bento box special for $10 that is an unfathomable amount of food. Seaweed salad, soup, rice, grilled chicken, sushi, and tempura shrimp and vegetables--all tasty. The rolls combination dinner is the way to go if it's not lunchtime or happy hour. The cherry on top is that there is a free parking lot for customers which is a treat of mythical proportions on commercial street. read more

A few hours later I had bad food poisoning and vomited the whole night and next day. If it weren't for my family member who is a doctor to bring me IV bags full of fluids, I would have had to gone to the ER. I come here a lot because it's across the street from work and home. It's good and satisfies my cravings for sushi. It's not the best sushi place I've been too, even in the Portland area but it's fine! It's hard to pin point why sometimes sushi tastes better at some places than others... Grade of the fish and quality of other ingredients, the way rolls are prepared? Service is usually pretty excellent but can sometimes be slow. I only give it less than a five because sometimes the service is a little bit slow. However I do come here on a regular basis for lunches and I enjoy every time I come. The service is very friendly sweet and easy to deal with. The food is always good and fast. The lunch menu is absolutely fantastic and always yummy. I have to admit the pricing is perfect. Sometimes we even get the cheesecake tempura and it's so good. I really like all the food that they have on the menu. Everything is good to me. I've only done with dinner here once and that was on a Tuesday or Wednesday and they had a great menu for happy hour which was super cheap rolls only three bucks I enjoyed it immensely and super appreciated how fast everything came it's an easy relaxing environment but right in the middle of everything so you can get away you need to go right after within 10 to 15 minutes. On occasion will sit outside but not often sometimes the smell of fish from the outside is a little to strong but today it seems pretty good most days it is. Sitting outside is nice and they don't forget about you it always feels like you're welcomed and they're happy to have you there and once I start to remember you it just becomes easier this environment is wonderful awesome and I can't wait to keep eating here read more

We were looking for a seafood place, and, honestly, were not impressed with anything in the area. I saw this place and had a good feeling about it so we went in. It pains me to give one star as the photos looked so good (prior to going), and the staff were really genuinely friendly. We were seated right away and our salads arrived very quickly, but it was downhill after that. The waitress was very friendly but the service was ridiculously slow and appeared to be the same with nearby tables who had different servers. When dinner arrived, the food just was not good. The sushi was not fresh. I ordered spicy salmon which looked like there was spicy sauce but had been scraped off, and shitake mushroom sushi that looked and tasted like they had used canned mushrooms. Went here for my birthday. The app we ordered was the most amazing thing I've tasted in a long time. It came in a bowl made of ice. It had fresh salmon sashimi wrapped with lemon and had bits of avocado everywhere and it had a sauce. Superb! Everything else was just OK. read more

All terrific, and large portions. The veg roll was a little bitter for my taste. Prices were moderate for a sushi place, where paying for each item can add up. My sister enjoyed her shrimp tempura roll, and the miso (ginger) dressing for her salad made me wish I had ordered one. We couldn't finish all the sushi, so were able to take home some leftovers - like that NEVER happens! Very good food coming from an establishment that doesn't look too fancy on the outside. The inside looks really nice and clean. Soft shell crab was good; there wasn't too much powder on the outside. Uni was not too fresh. Salmon sashimi was fresh. Maine roll comes with the dipping sauce that was super good. California roll with Maine crab was lackluster but I dipped it in the Maine roll's sauce which was really good. Chicken teriyaki was super dry though. A trip to Portland isn't complete without a trip to J's Oysters, Fore Street and of course Sapporo! It is probably one of my favorite place in the country for sushi. Fish just doesn't get fresher than this. Toro, hotate and uni sushi. Everything is fresh so try to come for lunch when they still have toro. Scallops are slimy and bland if frozen but when fresh, but at Sapporo, everything are FRESH! Oh...I wish I can bring you back to NY with me.
