Dinner review Zesty salmon roll - has raw salmon on top with raw scallop on the inside, scallions sprinkle the top and it is delicious!! We ordered two raw spicy scallop rolls and both were phenomenal!! The scallop is so fresh and delicious you don't even need soy sauce or anything! It's naturally sweet and just succulent! Ordered the California roll since it was made with read crab but didn't really taste the sweetness from the crabmeat. You can tell it's real crab and not the imitation but it didn't really knock my socks off since there was so little meat. Overall I highly recommend for anything scallop (raw)!!! read more

Oh man this place has good potential but yelp was wrong with these great reviews or everyone is just being way too generous giving 5 stars... The stars are for the food. The sushi was pretty decent. Their portion size was ridiculously small so you would have to order a good amount to get full. Ordered soft shell crab but it was cut into pieces? Never seen that before. Wicked small. Sashimi cuts were tiny. They should just raise the price a little bit to give you bigger pieces. Also we never got our soup with our sushi entrees. Service was below standard. I felt like we were waiting the whole time. Waited to get seated, waited for the server, waited to order food, waited for food longer than average, waited for the check... it was slowwww. I don't know if our server was having a rough night but it was kind of awful. Had to ask for water refill even though my glass was empty for a bit. Never brought out soups. Never asked if we wanted more drinks or another round, never asked if we wanted to see the dessert menu, never took our empty sake bottle & glasses away (tables are small FYI), never took plates away at the end. There were too many mistakes there. The other server seemed way more attentive with the table beside us :( Plus these tables are crammmmed together! High-quality, really yummy, reasonably priced. Always fresh, crisp seaweed (wakame) salad, hot miso soup with great taste and perfect tofu, great tempura, sushi rolls, udon dishes... There's an item usually only the seasonal happy hour menu--vegetable potsticker/dumpling--but when I've asked for it they've done it no problem even when it's not happy hour. This restaurant serves quality sushi and Japanese food. I ordered a shrimp and veggie tempura, miso soup, rice, and a California roll with ME crabmeat and Avocado. I was really impressed by the Cali roll even though I have been eating sushi my whole life. Everything I ordered was delicious, fresh, and even had nice presentation considering I ordered delivery. There was hardly anyone in the restaurant-- maybe just an off night, but our server was really short and rude with us, got our order wrong, and the food was over cooked and sour tasting (yikes). Yesterday I had lunch at Sapporo with a visiting friend who loves sushi. It was very hot and crowded in the Old Port so we planned our arrival just as they opened. We chose to sit in the cool and darker sushi bar where we could see everything being made. The service was prompt and polite. My tuna tatami salad was delicious and bigger than I'd expected. My friend ordered a sushi lunch and was very happy with every bight. The whole restaurant was clean, including the Lady's room. I would go there again. read more

The lunch special for sushi combos cannot be beat! It's $11.25 for 3 rolls (we usually get shrimp tempura and crunch spicy salmon or the eel ones). I wouldn't say it's the best quality sushi (sometimes the rice is hard), especially in comparison to the more expensive restaurants. But it's worth the low price and is way better than grocery store sushi. Great place to get take-out for a quick, cheap lunch. read more

Sapporo is the best affordable sushi place I've found so far after 10 months living in Portland. We started off with hamachi kama which was the grilled yellowtail neck. It's my favorite appetizer. We probably got lucky to have a huge neck filled of fresh and tasty meat.(or it might be a regular portion they serve here.) We had sushi lunch, maki lunch and sashimi lunch. I know they sounded pretty boring but anyway fresh and tasty. Then, we had some a la carte sushi: tamago, saba and amaebi... all of them came bigger and nicer than the sushi lunch. Saba and amaebi were delicious. At the end, the bill was about $50 something for three of us...not bad at all. Overall, It was a sophisticated meal. I'll probably come back soon. read more

From the perspective of a native Japanese, the best Japanese restaurant in Portland in my opinion. After trying the numerous Japanese restaurants in Portland (all of them generally good), I always preferred Sapporo over all the others. By far the most authentic, which is most important to me, but may not be for others. Only down side is their selection for sushi combos is a little restrictive--I would order sushi from a la carte, as the combos don't come with stuff I want, and I don't really like California roll. Also, their curry is excellent, very authentic Japanese curry. Last time I went, they used toro for the tuna rolls in the regular sushi comb. That made me very happy. read more

Well. Don't be fooled by its Japanese appearance from the outside. This is probably the worst Japanese restaurant I have ever been. In their sunomono, the shrimp is the ready-made sushi shrimp. Their nigiri sushi is also bad. One of the Salmon roe sushi came falling down instead of standing. But when I point it out for the waitress, I'm not kidding, her first reaction is to ask if she can make it stand again. The hotate shellfish sushi didn't even come in a complete piece. I really wonder what their chef is doing. But maybe, maybe I'm not inclusive enough. We just don't share the same value. If it is possible, I will give negative point. read more

My forays into Japanese joints always journey the same way: I contemplate springing for the noodle bowl and then I always come crawling back to the maki. However, I've been to Sapporo a few times and I'm honored to report that everything from their steamy miso oceans to their majestic mountains of crunchy tempura not to mention the rolling hills of maki and the eel infested udon noodle waters, all of it is deliciously luxurious. One time I even got sake and I don't even LIKE sake. This place is good. Nice location, patio in the summer times and free parking. Definitely grab some grub here and wash it down with an ice cold beer of the same name and you will be dining happy and sitting prettier than a geisha. read more

Sapporo got good ratings on Yelp! and seemed reasonably priced, so we made a reservation for 7:30. The restaurant was full, but the layout makes it both private and quieter than it really is. There are half walls in between most of the tables, and cloth hangings on the walls and ceiling to absorb noise. The ambiance is lovely and lets you concentrate on (and hear) your own conversation. The food was simply fantastic. The menu is extensive and has both sushi, noodle dishes, teriyakis and various other things. We got miso soup, shrimp tempura (fried shrimp and vegetables - 6 pieces), shumai (shrimp and vegetable dumplings - 8 pieces) and edamame for appetizers. That sounds like a lot, but bear in mind that seafood is light and portions aren't huge. I had never eaten edamame before (yes, I know, *gasp*, the horror!) and I loved it. I'm craving more right now, actually. For the sushi course we got a spicy tuna roll (excellent), a Boston roll (good) and a California roll (good). I would like to try different ones the next time we go back. And maybe be more adventurous. Anything not eel. I don't do eel. For dessert Dave got the ginger tempura ice cream (good, just not enough ice cream) and I had the mochi sundae. The latter consisted of chocolate ice cream (which I generally don't like, but I ate it anyway), fresh strawberries and, my favorite, mango mochi ice cream (small scoops of mango ice cream encased in mochi). I'll ask in the future if they can substitute some other flavor for the chocolate. After all that (very good) food, our bill came to about $50, which is insanely reasonable for a Japanese restaurant. There is an extensive drink menu, but hot tea is free, which is a large bonus. All in all, a fantastic restaurant that I look forward going to again. read more

My boyfriend and I met his mother here for dinner on a Saturday afternoon. We were greeted warmly and seated promptly on the patio (our choice). Our waiter was pleasant, attentive, and exacting. Service was timely, and the food was the desired temperature. Miso soup was our appetizer, and it was nice and warm and smokey and delicious. My boyfriend was extremely happy with his entree of Beef Tataki, Gyoza, and Yakitori. His mother was delighted by the very authentic Tempura, complete with a shiso leaf. My Crunchy Spicy Scallop roll left me wanting more. My California Roll with Maine crab was fresh and good, but it wasn't quite flavorful enough for me. We were all too full for dessert, which says it all when Tempura ice cream is on the menu! On a side-note, on a visit to the facilities earlier in the visit, I noticed that the trash can in the ladies' room was very full. I believe it is worth noting that the situation had been remedied between then and my second visit before we left the restaurant (the sushi chefs all thanked us on our way out). read more

Was it the most amazing, mind-blowing sushi experience ever? Nope. But it was very fresh, super tasty and very reasonably priced. I always get a few rolls and sometimes try a new one. I am in love with the dragon roll. It is perfection with its slight crunch and spiciness.The plum wine is phenomenal, sweet and rich with flavor. The staff are always friendly and attentive and will help sort out all the options of sushi and sake. I never have to ask for anything, as it is already anticipated and provide. While in Portland, I checked out restaurant Sapporo after I heard they had gluten free options. I went in and for ten dollars, I was able to order three California rolls with real Maine crab and a side salad, as the miso soup contains gluten. The sushi was very fresh and perfectly balanced. The service was also remarkable. The hostess, waitress, and even sushi chef checked in on me throughout my meal and were attentive and friendly. Overall, the majority of people use it as to-go during the week so the dining room is quite quiet and ideal for a nice meal. I would really recommend Sapporo to anyone looking for some fresh and local sushi options! read more

As a native Portlander I've eaten here many times over the years and I keep coming back! The staying power of Sapporo is also saying A LOT for the best restaurant town in the US, with multiple restaurant openings ever year, this is one of the toughest markets in the US. High quality food and great service is a must. This is a family run restaurant and well run, with care given to food and the customers. I got take out here this week - a three roll combo very, very fresh spicy crunchy scallop roll, super salmon roll and shrimp tempura roll. All A+ for taste and freshness- my wife doesn't like super spicy so we didn't ask for extra spice and this was perfect. The kitchen cares, the staff tries hard to please and the food is super tasty - that's how you survive in Portland Maine on the waterfront- love the convenient Old Port location and outside seating too! read more

The food was phenomenal and very reasonable these days. However, our server left a lot to be desired. He couldn't have cared less about our experience at this establishment. From the moment he walked up to our table, he was annoyed when we needed a few more minutes before ordering, to the minute he brought our check( without asking if we would like anything else, maybe another drink, or dessert) he acted inconvenienced by us. When we asked about dessert he told us the kitchen was closed now- at 8:30 on Valentines night- okay, whatever. Our reservation was for 7, so it would have been nice to know that we had to be done within 90 minutes. I don't normally take the time to review places, let alone leave a bad review on Yelp, but this experience really bugged me. It's rare that my husband and I go out for dinner, and for many people, going out for dinner is a special occasion, so to be treated so rudely is annoying. My husband still kindly left him 20%- he should be thankful I didn't pay the bill. Everyone at that table has worked in the service industry and we are exceptional tippers- bummer for him. Wavering between 2 and 3 stars but I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt. We have always passed this place but yesterday we finally stopped by for lunch. The prices were very reasonable (especially for the lunch special, which does run on weekends as well), but the fish just wasn't very good. Service was extremely slow. We were one of 3 tables at the entire place with 2 sushi chefs, 2 waitresses, and who knows how many in the kitchen-- and it still took over an hour to get a "quick" bite. I did appreciate that the spicy salmon and spicy tuna rolls actually use big chunks of fish and not the chopped mess you find at most places. But all things considered, we will not be back. We decided to grab lunch here during Old Port Fest because it wasn't crazy busy, there were no full tables inside and the outdoor seating area had open spots. A man dressed as a sushi chef was running around like a chicken with its head violently chopped off. He was actually the person who seated us, and throughout our lunch he seated other people and bussed tables. Not sure what was going on behind the scenes at Sapporo, but it seemed like chaos. Our waitress was kind, but she literally forgot everything we asked for. She forgot our miso soups. She forgot one of our rolls. She forgot to bring us napkins. She forgot what one of the rolls we ordered was and brought us a more expensive one instead. The rolls are tiny for the price, after $50 worth of food we were still hungry. To top it off, the most incredibly obnoxious group was seated next to us and the staff just let them do whatever they wanted. One of the men turned the music on his phone and set it on the table like a speaker, it stayed there, playing loud music, for the duration of everyone's meals. If you've ever been to the outdoor seating area at Sapporo you know it's a tight squeeze. F-bombs were dropping left and right, and eventually more of their group showed up so they started sitting on each other's laps. Really? This is not Oasis. The poor sushi chef/busser/hostess was told to bring more chairs for them, he tried explaining there was really no room but they were all 'Nah man, it's good." The last thing I saw before we left was a pair of women sitting next to them get elbowed in the face. We were so disappointed and surprised at the lack of control this place had over their customers, they were the most badly behaved group of people I've ever seen at a nice restaurant and they did nothing to control or remove them. You can tell everyone's dining experience was ruined because of it, and to top things off the service suffered as a result of the huge distraction. read more

I expected a lot more for this place since it's right at the port so they should have super fresh fish. I sat at the bar, looking into the cooler, nothing really caught my eyes. I was expecting fancy stuff like lobster or something wako. But it was just the usual stuff, salmon, tuna, shrimp, scallops, squid, etc. I talked to the chef, he's nice, but he didn't have any surprises for me. Real sushi eaters don't get fancy rolls. My squid was great with the japanese basil. The special shrimp they had was quite good, but too bad they fried the head before I asked them to make a miso soup with it. I know this is going to be a very hard to write review: 1. Being a former Maine residence, I absolutely love everything about Portland. What's not to like? The fierce but fresh winter breath, songs of the seagulls, little town charm buildings, the nice people or the view of the sea? So I used to frequently pass this restaurant, which is located right on Commercial ST, at the water, next to DiMillo's, kinda isolated but definitely noticeable. 2. The interior of this place was cozy, warm and cute. Can't really compare to California super authentic Japantown places, but close enough. 3. Service was good. I feel bad for our waitress as the four of us were speaking Chinese the entire time and apparently it made it very hard for her to wait on us "at the right time". Nonetheless she did a pretty good job by being accommodating, polite and not at all intruding. 4. The food... eh... I've had better. I did like the broiled squid a lot. It was smoky yet tender; and to my surprise not super salty. I was not impressed with their sashimi. For me raw fish was either a hit or a miss. And that one happened to be a miss: some of the fish tasted dehydrated and overly salty; the octopus tasted like rubber. The sushi rolls weren't bad, or good. Again, fish was not particularly fresh; and therefore the flavor of the tuna roll and yellow tail roll was pretty bland. I don't have much to comment on the avocado-cucumber roll... the name is self-explanatory enough. 5. The udon is worth its own paragraph. After a super long week in this cold weather with all the jet lags and adjusting to do, the noodle soup actually, made me feel happy. It reminded me of my homemade noodle soups, with that salty-sweet flavor and veggies in the soup. It came in a clay pot, So I instantly liked it. The tempura that came with it was overly breaded.... I'm picky with tempura and I've been spoiled by California. Sorry. I had high hopes in this restaurant. Everything else was great except for the food itself, which was very unfortunate for them. Even the noodle soup itself, other than reminding me of "home", was still less than great. So 5 stars for its lovely building and location; 2 stars for the food. Now I can't wait to go back home and do my own sashimi feast again with fresh supply from the Japanese market :D read more

I LOVE Sapporo. The staff from the hostess, to the sushi chefs to any passing waitress greets you as you walk in. I've never had a bad waitress or experience with the staff regardless of how busy it may be. The prices are decent and portions are very good. Free green tea if you just ask! The sushi is not sloppily thrown together, it's always very neat and it's always right. It is so, so good. The setting is quiet with very pretty and dim lighting. Try it if you haven't! read more

Oh Sapporo, I was so ready to treat my man to a date and it was a major fail. First, we sat outside. The porch is incredibly cramped and sunny. So cramped that the chode next to us picked his chair up to move and spilled soy sauce all over my brand new shirt (people of the world, if you ever spill something that stains on another person, it is, like, customary to offer to pay for dry cleaning). When our sushi arrived, it was laced. With hair. Black. Hair. In the entire roll. The chef came and deeply apologized and comped everything.
