We were getting together with friends who like Italian food, and having frequented many of Providence's fine existing establishments, were interested ins something new. After a little Yelp Research (should that be called Yelpsearch or Yesearch?!), I found Sarto, located in the Providence G building, which opened about 6 months ago and boasted some very good reviews. We reserved a table for four on Resy and met there on Saturday night at 6pm. They offer free validated parking on a lot at the corner of Dorrance Street. There are also many lots available which range from about $7 to $10. It was a beautiful early spring evening, and the large windows were open to the street. We sat at a table next to an open window, and except for the occasional motorcycle, the noise level was very good. Our waitress was very prompt and professional, as she explained the menu in detail. We began by sharing an appetizer: * Chicken Liver Mousse $14 (apple butter, fried chicken skin, sourdough toast). This was delicious, and very light on tasty, nicely toasted sourdough. Then, onto our antipasti, and we ordered: * Grilled Asparagus $15 (burrata, Sunflower Seed Vinaigrette, Sourdough Toast). * Grilled Gem Salad $12 (smoked bluefish, buttermilk vinaigrette, puffed grains). I've had many asparagus dishes over the years, and this has to rank in the top 1%. The asparagus has a wood fire, smoky flavor, and was complimented by a delicious, and slightly viscous vinaigrette. I doubt that I would return here without ordering this dish every time. My friends ordered the Gem salad, and thought it was very tasty. Four our entrees we ordered: * Bucatini Cacio E Pepe $14 (Cabot Clothbound Cheddar, Peppercorn medley). * Sourdough Raschiatelli $16( Sunchokes, Mint, Chive). * Osteria Filet $26 (Wild Spring Onion, Chicories, Fingerling potatoes). The Bucatini Cacio E Pepe was absolutely delicious! And the chef must have discovered one of the secrets to successful cooking. If you make high-quality home-made pasta, and add a lot of butter and cheese, it's probably going to taste good! And this dish didn't disappoint. The Sourdough Raschiatelli was also tasty, though the diner felt the portion was too small. The Osteria Filets were nicely cooked and quite tender, with a rich sauce. I thought the fingerling potatoes were a little bland and soggy. Dinner and a glass of wine for each diner totaled about $190. We did a Yelp vote, all agreed that Sarto's merited a solid four-star performance on this evening. We look forward to a return visit and would like to sample their deviled eggs. read more

A group of neighbors went out to Sarto for dinner. I had called a few weeks before to make sure they would do separate checks. They said yes. When we arrived, the waitress said No, we don't do separate checks. After a bit of conversation, she agreed to split our party of 7 into 3 separate checks, meaning that 3 individual ones would be combined into one check. How hard it is to split checks? I have friends that work in IT for restaurant computer systems and they say it really is not difficult. There are ways to help the customer. We ordered our meal around 6:15pm....there was probably 1-2 other tables in the whole place. The entrees arrived after 7PM. Over 45 minutes !!! If dishes take long, it would be nice for the menu to state that, so people can be informed. The service was average, not very attentive, not a great customer friendly staff. The food was average as well. The table got the prosciutto breadsticks and you get 5 of them for $14. They were average...as always, very salty pork around a bland breadstick. We also got the deviled eggs, nothing to write home about. For dinner, I got the Bass and it was nicely done on a spicy broth. I asked for pepper at the beginning of my meal and the pepper shaker arrived after 10 min. I had finished about 70% of my meal already. My BF got the gnocchi and he liked it. Another friend got the chicken saltimboca and they liked the taste, but noticed that the portions were very small. Overall a nice addition to downtown, but nothing to hurry back for. read more

Reopened with a new chef! We went to Sarto this past weekend and it was great. A pro-tip for Providence on a weekend is go early (right when the open early) to a restaurant when you want a good not rushed meal. The kitchen has time to slowdown and focus on your dishes. The venue is the same, bright and open. They have Narragansett creamy as the cheese in a lot of dishes which is great to see a local source Burrata, sacchetti pasta, crudo was all delicious. Staff was great. Only two pieces of constructional feedback: the bar seats could be lowered a bit, a lot of bending over to eat your food. The second is the staff comes behind you to bring your food and it would be ideal if it came from someone behind the bar and placed in-front of you. If the bar was full I'd imagine coming from behind would be less than ideal. Looking forward to going back. read more

I'm impressed with this new Italian spot downtown. It's not your typical Fed Hill restaurant (which is good because I avoid the Hill as much as possible) -- they don't make anything with red sauce, for starters! But the chef is SO awesome and personable: a native RI'er who trained in NYC and Italy, he brought his knowledge back with him to make truly authentic dishes. The food is top notch. (It does cost a pretty penny, though, and I find it hard to justify spending so much. I'd suggest it for date night, or a special occasion...it's a bit like Oberlin.) Despite my caveat above, it is a very welcoming place. This is a bar I'd want to visit after work. The cocktails are NYC prices, but very delicious. Mike the bartender is awesome. I ordered a Bari Sunset, which he described as tasting like a Sangria (it reminded me of the House Punch at the Eddy), and I liked it... but my friend got the Foundry drink with mezcal--I think I liked that better! And I plan to come back for the Valente. In terms of food, we tried all of the pastas except the risotto, and they were all great. I really loved the chestnut gnocchi because it was like nothing I've ever tasted - the gnocchi is made of chestnuts!! It says it in the name, but it didn't register until I ate it. I also liked the bolognese, but expect the lamb to taste different from normal bolognese (I wouldn't consider it "gamey," though, as someone else noted). We also tried the gem salad (a gem, indeed) and the ceasar toast, which was very good but the broccoli rabe made it hard to eat. It's a knife-and-fork crostini. The desserts are not overly sweet, which is nice. I don't know what a zeppole is supposed to taste like, but Frank, an Italian, told me this redefined it. I trust him, but it's not my chosen type of dessert...it was like a very classy version of a churro. But I enjoyed the accompanying ice cream! The Coffee Milk Budino (best described as pudding) was really nice, but the sea salt (?) sprinkled on top was sprinkled in excess. It should be more of an accent. This is a nice addition to the downtown scene, and I think it's going to be a popular spot. Visit now while you can still get a seat! read more

The night we were there was really, really busy. It was wall to wall and shoulder to shoulder with humans all wanting drinks. We were happy to wait our turn and watch the crowds. We were at a very long bar that had a bartender on each side, they were hustling to get drinks out to everyone. My partner whispered to me that we seemed to be missing our chance each time the bartender went around getting drinks orders from surrounding groups. I decided to watch the going's on and it did look like he was purposely skipping us. I have zero idea why because we were simply waiting our turn. Next thing the bartender stands close to where we were waiting, and while mixing a drink, very loudly announces that "people complaining about not being served, get no fucking drinks" Wow. What just happened? We hadn't complained at all. The people behind us had, in-fact said something about not getting service. We weren't part of their group but were somehow guilty by association? When I saw the bartender from the other side, I mentioned we had been waiting a while with no service, so he helped us, with a smile. I asked what his associate's name was. Eric or Eriq, spelling might be different. Eriq, we understand the world is short staffed. We didn't have a problem waiting, we did have a problem with your belligerent, passive-aggressive behavior. Hopefully they hire more help to avoid those kinds of outbursts in future. read more

Providence is our go to city- not too far and not too big! Coming out of the pandemic we have made a pact to visit at least once all the restaurants in Providence we seem to have an interest to. A Waterfire(numerous smaller pit fires on the canals was scheduled) we came down, parked and wandered the city aimlessly discovering Sarto's, a name known but not yet visited. The main thing for us is an open bar to sit at and that's all we need! Overall it's a pasta Italian restaurant, unless they add a special and I'm only guessing they probably don't do a form of a pizza. Just arrive with pasta in mind and you will be fine. read more

Regarding the food: Extremely mediocre. I kinda see it as the Legal Seafoods of pasta. Sparse with no frills. There are like 3 things on the plate. For instance, Fra Diavolo: pasta, spicy sauce, mussels. It's not even on par with Pasta Beach in Wayland Square. The fries were good as an app. But come on, they're fries. The octopus was a single short piece of tentacle that was nothing like the delicate dish put out at Gracie's. The food, I guess, would be what I'd expect if my son were in his first year of culinary school and making us dinner. Not terrible but nothing I'd want to pay $350 for. We went during Restaurant Week. The prix fixe menu gets 1 star - it sucked. Best was the chowder, which looked like dish water but still had some flavor, like a RI clam chowder at Iggy's at double the price. The bucatini was horrid. Noodles doused in olive oil with hardly any flavor. A smattering of corn did nothing to save the dish. And the olive cake was a crusty dried mess. Regardless of how you slice it, the meal was a dramatic disappointment. We won't be back. On the positive side, the restaurant was well decorated with an airy feel - particularly nice in the era of COVID. Maybe I should have started with the positives first? read more

It's the most terrible Italian food I ever tasted. I understand it's an experimental approach to traditional Italian cuisine, and it's refreshing and exciting everything, but it's bad. It's very bad. I was excited to try this spot but was underwhelmed by the both the food and service. I ordered the grilled broccolini and the ragu. The broccolini was okay. It was a bit under seasoned and overcooked as it had gotten a tad mushy. The ragu was good but not excellent. I thought the pasta was great and had a nice bite but the ragu was bland. It was a bit salty but lacked a lot of other flavours that I expected from the sausage and tomatoes. I tried the steak, tuna crudo, and carbonara fries that other people had ordered. The steak was a steak so it was good but nothing special. The tuna tartar was extremely salty and also lacked other flavour. It was in a sweet vinaigarette but would have benefited from something tart or sour. It also had an odd texture. The tuna itself almost seemed cured rather than just raw. The carbonara fries were a gimmick. It was fries with a carbonara sauce and lardons. People in my party enjoyed it but I didn't care for it. We were a large group(9) but I was disappointed by how slow the service was. When the food came out some of the items felt like they had been sitting for a bit. I can understand that since it was also extremely busy but also disappointing. Our server was clearly pressed and wasn't super attentive. We sat outside and the weather was perfect. I came here with a group of my friends for my birthday dinner and was quite impressed with our time there! We had an 8:00 PM reservation but we arrived early and were seated with no problem. Our servers were kind and attentive the whole night and they even topped off my wine for my birthday since the bottle was almost finished. On to the food, we got the charcuterie board and the meats were well balanced with the jam and olives provided. I ordered the steak entree and it was outstanding, the entire piece of meat was cooked just right and the vegetable that came with it was nicely fried. My friend did order one of the pasta dishes that was a bit small but she said it was delicious. Dessert was the panna cotta that was well balanced with the orange on top and berry mix. While overall it was a pricey experience, it was well worth it and I'll be back! read more

I walked in for an early lunch with 3 other guests and was greeted with a friendly smile from Paul. First initial reaction was how it reminded me of a quaint bistro in Washington DC. We sat at the bar as he was juicing fresh lemons, limes and grapefruits. He explained to us the open kitchen concept in how you can see the chefs make your meal, and helped me decide on a craft original cocktail. Paul made me "The Jam Band;" A margarita shaken with tequila, fresh lime juice, and a spicy homemade concord grape jelly mix (don't forget the spoon topper). It's just the right amount of heat on your tongue, and the right amount of liquid in your cup to sip and relax with before, during, and after your meal. It never got watered Down!!! The lunch portion size of the Fruiti de Mare was superb. You can tell the pasta was freshly cooked, the shrimp and muscles added great substance, and it was all tossed in red/garlic sauce. I got to steal some of my Nana's French fries (from her Italian grinder sandwich) which were super crispy. Her sandwich was so big she had to take it home. Paul had about 10 other guests in the dining room for lunch. He never seemed rushed or stressed and was super personable with each table. We went to Sarto on a whim because they had pretty good reviews and available reservations. What started as a random decision ended up being the best decision- I couldn't believe how flavorful our food was. We ordered the ricotta toast with ricotta from Narragansett Creamery. The ricotta was so fresh and perfectly complimented by the blistered tomatoes and green onions. I was craving some crudo so I ordered the scallops with chili seasoning- it was to die for. For entrees I ordered a pesto chicken dish with unique Gigli pasta- I was worried based on some of the reviews I read that the portions would be small, but was pleasantly surprised by the size of my dish- it was enough for both tonight's dinner and tomorrow's. Andy ordered the porchetta, and I was blown away at how perfectly the flavors balanced each other out. Usually I don't eat a ton of meat or pork, but this pork was so tender and flavorful that I couldn't stop taking bites out of his meal. We didn't get to order dessert because the restaurant was short staffed (totally understandable, but the reason why I took off a star) but had our eyes on the limoncello cake, which we will make sure to get next time we go. Such a great addition to Providence! It's not your average Italian restaurant, the menu has such unique options and everything we tried was so delicious. I visited with my boyfriend for Valentine's Day and it was the perfect choice. We decided to share a few things from the menu so we could try more. We started with the prosciutto wrapped breadsticks and the Caesar toast, both were excellent. The breadsticks were unlike anything I've tried before, I highly recommend them. The Caesar toast was amazing too - like one big bruschetta with lettuce, cheese, and dressing. We later shared the lamb Bolognese and the pork shank. The lamb Bolognese was super different, my first time trying lamb. It wasn't your typical saucy Italian Bolognese. The pork was so tender and served over some beans, really great. I enjoyed all of the meals we tried! We shared a bottle of wine which was recommended to us by our waiter and the service was great. Also love the bar and modern decor throughout the restaurant. Started raving about this place before I even left! Made a last minute res on a Saturday to have dinner with friends. Res was easy to make on open table. We were greeted warmly right away and seated with menus. Menu was really really well done and I got excited. Big shout out to the zero alcohol drinks--blueberry smash with Seedlip made for a complex drink with no alcohol--some one has been paying attention. Ok the food: ricotta toast--grilled but still chewy bread with creamy ricotta and very fresh tomatoes-- Tuna Crudo--blood orange comes through and really plays well against the tuna Porchetta--get this. Thank me later The place is stunningly beautiful, food is really effing good, service is efficient--drinks are spot on. Does Rhode Island now have a new destination restaurant? With Sarto they just might. The Ravioli Doppio is among the best things I've eaten all year. Lovely squares of rolled pasta, slick with a warm and sweet glaze of beef and brown butter, soft strands of roasted oxtail inside. Crunchy herbed granola adds a wonderful texture, and a near mountain of fresh white truffles, well that was the stroke of grace. A+ read more

Sarto joins the ranks of Providence's many excellent Italian restaurants with quality ingredients and delicious plates. It offers intriguing twists on the classics and with interesting and balanced flavor combinations. People who expect conventional and predictable Italian plates might be better off on Federal Hill. But if you want memorable food, great service and an energetic vibe than visit Sarto soon before the word gets out. Food: This is not your everyday Italian restaurant. They have hard-to-find Italian cured meats that they slice to order in the most beautiful machine; they offer salads and appetizers that almost steal the show. I loved the deviled egg: it had just enough smoke and acid to set off (not bury) the egg. Also notable was a green salad with a buttermilk dressing. A smattering of smoked blue fish added a low note to the fresh greens, and toasted grains and seeds made it crunchy. Sarto offers half or full pastas which lets diners sample what is an amazing line-up: my table ordered four and all were amazing. Their delightful caramelle pasta (shaped like caramel candies) had a butter sauce, fresh apple and a perfectly balanced amount of celery flavor. I think the chestnut gnocchi, complete with fresh shaved chestnuts, will become a signature dish. While I found the lamb bolognese a bit too gamey, my companions loved it. We only tried one entree - a perfect strip loin steak which came with the most amazing cheesy polenta; the grilled radichhio was the one minor miss of the night. Too salty as a side, but great as a condiment. Wine: Nicely curated selection of wines by the glass with generous pours and the option to taste before committing. All Italian options but thoughtful and interesting, with south and north equally represented. We had a great Nerello from Sicily and a intriguing (almost orange) Pinot Grigio from Fruili. Cool wine glasses too! Service: Sarah was wonderful - she gave us the wise suggestion to try the gem salad. Highly informed about everything , and was always there when we needed her without seeming intrusive. Atmosphere: They bill this place as a Bistro setting - and it is. It has a beautiful open kitchen, decent sound dampening, good lighting and a great energy. The bar looked inviting and was busy when we were there. A great place to spend an evening. read more

Came here last Saturday with some friends to celebrate a birthday. I called the restaurant ahead to confirm that they had Valet parking, as advertised, and they told me it would be available. Pulling up to the restaurant, no such valet, but that is on the service itself, not the restaurant. First thing to notice is how modern and fun the restaurant looks. Definitely a place that would attract a chill bar crowd and enjoyed for a date night. We got a bunch of dishes to share. The bread was delicious as well as the warm olives, but I found that the broccolini had no flavor with the aioli on it. The drinks however were delicious and well created, kudos to the bartender that evening. All entrees at the table were mentioned to be delicious, but I can only speak to my Ribeye which was excellent. It was better than what I was expecting and was worth going out for. Split some desserts afterwards, the Brown butter cake was unreal, highly recommended. All in all, great little date spot in a fun little neighborhood. We love Sarto! We've been in a few times and all of our visits have been so enjoyable! At our last visit we sat at the bar and the bartenders were fantastic! Overrated and overpriced. They call themselves a "neighborhood" regional Italian restaurant. The first part is true. It is filled with noisy college kids from one of the many universities in the neighborhood. As for "regional Italian" it barely passes muster in terms of the latter. The radiatori, for example, is what a college freshman would attempt to make in a college dorm after a hurried trip to a neighborhood grocery store. The scallops had a measly 3 pieces in a thick unappetizing sauce that claimed to be caramelized fennel Service was decent but don't bother sitting outside. The incessant roar of motorbikes and boom boxes is certain to destroy your eardrums and your appetite. read more

The food was descent, but let's face it in Providence you can get descent anywhere, cheese plate portions were paltry and I had a sub-par Old Fashioned which was surprising since they claim to be a cocktail bar. Their biggest failing was service, waitstaff did their best while working the second floor but my real issue was when i requested a larger table and was told they were fully booked, we were sat near the restroom and workstation. Fine enough I understand if you have larger reservations coming in but I became increasingly agitated as those tables not only remained open but also watched as staff broke down the table I requested and it still sat empty for the next 45 minutes as finished our dinner. A restaurant is a food and hospitality business , more effort on the guest experience may have improved my opinion of the food. because of this I have low priority of returning read more

I was thinking maybe I would give this restaurant 4 stars but, although the food was good, it was expensive and I struggled to make a selection from their menu. The restaurant itself is lovely and the service was excellent. We went on a Thursday night and once the show at PPAC started it was pretty much empty in the restaurant. We took our time ordering a drink because their cocktails are so complicated that I had to Google some items and ask our server what some other items were before I could make a selection. I did have a drink that I enjoyed although it was absolutely tiny. My friend ordered a glass of wine and I have never seen such a small pour of wine at such a large price. Then we chose a meat and cheese platter as an appetizer and that was excellent. It was enough for the 4 of us to each have a taste and had there been 2 of us I would have enjoyed it much more. I ordered pasta for dinner and all of the menu items were so complicated with so many ingredients that I was not familiar with that it took me forever to order. I also did not have the sense once I ordered that I really knew what I was getting. I had a frutti di mare pasta and it was good but I had no idea that it would be spicy because I was not familiar with the ingredients listed on the menu. And all of them items on the menu were like that. They were unfamiliar and complicated so it made it much more difficult to order. In all, it was an expensive meal that required a great deal of work on my part to choose and I guess that's just not what I go out to dinner for. Here's the thing--very tasty food, our pastas were special and can serve as pleasant primos, and even our salad was delicious and ample. However, the cocktails are overpriced by a lot--$17 for a very mundane, overly sweet and noticeably not spirit-forward Old Fashioned. This is an extremely difficult review to write. So difficult, in fact, that I've been avoiding it. The only way I can sum up Sarto is to say this: I don't think I'm smart enough to eat here. I'll explain... There are many positive things about Sarto. For one, the food is absolutely outstanding. Clearly the chef understands cuisine and how to make delicious food - I don't see how that can even be debated. The Cacio e Pepe pasta is the second best pasta dish that I've had in my life. I could eat a gallon of that stuff and would be happy to do so! The service, decor, and bar are also fantastic at Sarto. My issue is that I think they've missed the mark when it comes to how the menu is designed. The menu is exceptionally small, which is usually a GOOD thing since it means they're dedicated to what they want to do and aren't just trying to please everyone. However, it was NOT AT ALL clear that the pasta dishes were "tasting" size. That pasta dish I mentioned earlier was $14, and yielded maybe 12 bites. I wanted more!! I suppose I could order 2 bowls for $28, but isn't that a bit...awkward? The waiter was baffled when my companions and I each ordered salad and pasta and nothing else. He asked if we were ready to order our 3rd course, and we were confused and said we should be good with the pasta. When he reluctantly took the menus away, I figured something was off and when I saw the portions we received, I finally understood. I guess I don't know who Sarto is marketing towards. If you're looking for a big, satisfying Italian meal, this is absolutely NOT the place for you. I suppose it would be a nice evening for cocktails and charcuterie, if that's your thing? Just don't expect to leave full. 3 stars because the food and atmosphere are delightful. As I mentioned at the start, maybe I'm just not smart enough to eat here. Quite frankly, I don't "get" Sarto. It was DEAD in there on a Friday night at 7, so my prediction is that in 2-3 years this place won't exist. That would be a real shame, as the chef has incredible talent. My opinion is that they should make the pasta dishes full size - even at an increased cost. No one should leave an Italian restaurant hungry, which we all did after our last visit. I hope that I'm wrong and that Sarto stays open for years and years. Maybe I'll visit again someday, but I wish someone could fill me in on what I'm not understanding. read more

My husband and I went out for our first (outdoor!) dining experience since Covid hit for our anniversary and we're both so happy we chose Sarto. Every dish was absolutely delicious and the service was stellar. They take all the proper precautions and are very respectful of your comfort level (we always put our masks on as our server approached and if she was just coming to see how the food was she asked from afar so as not to interrupt our eating). Since it was our anniversary they also surprised us with some Prosecco with our dessert, it was so thoughtful and kind. Still dreaming of every dish we tasted. My husband and I went there for our anniversary- The food is authentic Italian ( we had spent a month in Italy and Sarto is equally delicious). Valet Parking was simple and the waitstaff were wonderful. The ambiance was lively and The kitchen is open to the eating area; it was fun to watch the care with which the plates were put together. The desserts were out of this world! And, we got complimentary champagne to celebrate our anniversary! Can't wait to go back. read more
