If you don't mind a little digging, this fabric store has some of the best finds. I've found beautiful modern synthetics for garments, a huge assortment of knits, and remnants of Lycra for swimwear. The prices are hard to beat, especially the sale bins where fabric is often priced by the pound. This is also a great place to stock up on basic notions. There's a bin with zippers in every color of the rainbow for less than a dollar each. Black or white thread can be found for 75 cents a spool or 1.50 if you want the Coats brand. read more

Went to buy material for my car I was able to find it but the two stars is for the service which is so super super slow. Plus there is no AC. in there we were in line for a long time. They need to work faster so the lines can move faster. Plus they should have a person just cutting material for people that way the lines can move faster. read more

MY NEW FAVORITE STORE!!! They have just about every fabric for every project you can possibly think of!!! Don't come if you are in a hurry - you need to dedicate time to look around as they have sooo many fabrics and it's self service (which is perfect because I like to shop unassisted) they sell the fabric by the yard but they also have buttons, flowers, patches , sewing supplies the works! Parking is free and prices are unbelievable. Oh my goodness. Going to SAS can be compared to dying then going to fabric heaven. Whatever you desire they have it. The prices are over reasonable. They sell material by the pound ! You can purchase material like broadcloth for example. It is about 3.99 per yard. The width is 108 inches. One and one half yards is more rhan enough to make your light outfit. In my case it is scrub pants. That is the lost common material used in nursing. Slacks ? No problem ! 2.99 per yard. The with is well over one hundred inches ! You can make a jumpsuit without sewing the top and bottom together. I cannot say enough good things about SAS. Seeing is believing. Any kind of material or notion you desire. This place is a wonderland of material. Drapes, upholstery, lace, netting. You name it. They have it. This is an honest and unsolicited review. I was not paid or encouraged to give this review. This is my "go to" store whenever I need anything related to sewing. That includes fabric, or course, but also needles, thread (great price for good thread), lace, trims, you name it. I always say "if they don't have it, no one does". The prices are already discounted, so you certainly can't complain about that. You can buy fabric by the yard, or the pound. Beware Spaniards and Catholics in these parts (and unless you happen to be a very savvy lockpick, don't go on a Sunday). Once ye make it through the front gates, matey, feast yer eyes upon the treasure within! Walls and walls covered in bolts of the finest silks from the Orient. Baubles, fandangle, and gewgaws abound! And for those who needs be stingy with their dwindling treasure, mate, even the fanciest frippery will cost you a pretty penny less than yer standard Michael's. So load yer pockets with gold, ye scaliwag, and hie thee south to SAS for all yer tailoring needs. *In the King's English, "slops" originally referred to the loose short-pants worn by sailors. This place is CRAZY!!!! It's sort of like Big Lots for fabric and notions. If you need specific things and are shopping with a list, this isn't the place. If you're looking for some interesting fabric and inspiration for ideas, this place is perfect. I got some really neat fabric that I'm sure I'd never find elsewhere. They had boxes of zippers out of the packages for 25 cents each. All kinds of mill ends and that sort of thing, and some great home decorating fabric at extremely reasonable prices. Plus it was a scene--the customers spanned the globe of diversity and the people running the place were equally diverse. So that was sort of fun, to see what all the different people were looking at. I feel stupid for having gone down to Downtown LA so many times for trim and fabric! The selection here is very good - not exhaustive - but compared to gas to drive downtown, paying for parking and walking around - this should be your first place to start a project. This place is great, especially if you are flexible with your needs. I needed tassels, like the ones on bookmarks, but the only tassels they had were on trim, like a strip of cord with a tassel every inch or so, they did not sell individual tassels. I did not buy the trim as I could not tell if the tassels could be separated or of they would have to be cut off the trim strip. I asked the counterperson if they had singles and she said no. I had a feeling she didn't understand what I needed, so I kept looking and found one drapery tassel on a cord in a box. It was pretty, but huge. I took it back to the lady and asked if they had any more but smaller. She showed me a hideous corded belt (?) for $4.99 with 3 small tassels on each end - it was hideous and made from cheap plastic or vinyl strips braided to make a cord, but the bead caps on the tassels were beautiful! I bought the cord with the intention of using it just for the beads. That's what I mean by "flexible". They might not have exactly what you need, but you can probably find a way to make what they have into something you can use. The shop is huge and smells of fabric. The trims they carry range from crocheted or knitted trim 1 ft wide, to plain ribbon to Greek and floral design trim. I saw some great 1-inch wide embroidered trim for $1.99 a yard similar to trim I have bought downtown for the same price, and some trims for $0.50 a yard that I would have bought rolls of had I a use for them. There is vinyl fabric hidden in a back corner, you'll smell it before you see it, and up near the front a whole shelf of denim hidden in a corner. I kicked myself because in a box near the entrance they had masquerade masques for just $3.99! Some cheapie ones, some hand-painted with feathers and some with handles to hold up to your face instead of actually wearing the mask. I needed a mask 2 weeks ago :( They also had ostrich feathers for $0.99, if you ever need or use ostrich feathers, you know what a deal this is! If you look under and on top of displays you'll see boxes of "stuff" - some with bags of ribbon remnants for $0.75, some with zippers for $0.25 - by the cash register is a box of paper and wood folding fans for $.99. There are boxes of buttons for $0.10 each, many seem to be the buttons you got when you bought your last dress blouse or shirt, and some could be antiques or made into jewelry or used to dress up a plain blazer or dress. In the glass display counters are the rhinestone iron-ons, loose rhinestones, fabric dyes and other more expensive or easy to mess up things. On my visit, the counter staff of 3 seemed very busy, my "hello" to one of them was met with a stare. Apparently you bring what you want to the counter and they will cut/weigh it for you, write you a receipt and then you take it to the cashier and meet up with your fabric there. A good system unless the cashier is also helping cut fabric too, as on my visit. The older lady who helped me was multi-taking and helping out 2 or 3 people at once. I'm sure they are more than helpful but it probably depends on timing. They have a crazy tight parking lot in the back, but street parking should be easy to find on Hawthorne and the little parking "Islands" in the middle of the street. All in all I plan to be back many, many times. read more

SAS Fabric. I love thee, but - I wouldn't recommend this store to people who need help buying fabric. I love thee, because you are incredibly cheap and offer a huge variety prints for all types of fabric. I love thee, because I have never felt uncomfortable for aimlessly browsing for up to two hours. Your employees are .... well... not fluent in English. If I had any skills/knowledge about fabric- I wouldn't need help, but I have no skills/knowledge about fabric. The following questions have never been successfully answered: "Can I buy less than this entire remnant?" "Will the fabric shrink after being washed?" "Can this fabric be mended?" "Can I machine wash this fabric?" The employees at SAS range from friendly to indifferent. No one has ever been rude to me, but I don't feel like I've ever had... well, I've never had an exchange of information with any employee. Luckily, the fabric is weighed and the prices are posted. Fortunately, SAS is cheap enough that when I experiment - I can afford to go and buy more fabric when I buy the wrong fabric for a project. (FYI, certain fabrics will rip when trying to use a staple gun to pin it to wood.) Of course, this is my fault and if I was knowledgeable about fabric- I would be giving this store five stars. read more

This place is crazy!! I have no experience sewing and I got it into my head that I wanted to make an infinity dress (instructions here: http://sewlikemymom.com/little-red-infinity-dress-tutorial/). I was originally going to go to Jo-Ann's but their website was estimating about $7-10 a yard. Knowing that I would probably screw up, I didn't want to spend that much money on my first attempt. I found Sas on yelp and am glad I did! I was able to get 5.5 yards of fabric for under $10!! That's under $2 per yard! The store had a decent selection of jersey knit fabrics to choose from and sold them for $3.49/lb. I was also able to get a lot of other supplies I needed like thread ($0.50 for the spool), chalk ($0.99), ballpoint needles ($1.99/pack). I asked the ladies up front a lot of questions, but they were pretty nice about it. I will definitely be coming back!! read more

They have everything you need for your sewing projects and costumes. Sewing seems to be a dying hobby/craft. Almost all fabric stores have closed, but SAS still remains, and they're fully stocked. Prices are reasonable. The first time I came here was in 2012 on the recommendation of my mom who sews. I was looking for black ribbon to line the blazer of my Psy costume. They have every color, size, and style of ribbon you could think of and they cut by the yard. More recently I went to get some elastic for a waistband, facing to repair a tear in a pants hem, and some lace for a nail art project. Check, check, and check. I even came out with some colored decorative feathers for another nail art project. Of course as their name states, they have fabric; lots and lots of fabric. Everything from satin and tulle, to fleece children's designs and cotton. It can definitely be a crafter's smorgasbord! My one negative comment is that service leaves a lot to be desired, but if you know what you want they can just point you in the right direction and ring you up. read more

$1.99 a yard for gorgeous chiffon? Yes please! This store is a hot, dusty, chaotic explosion of fabric and assorted strange little gizmos and gadgets - but it's amazing. The fabric selection is one of the best I've seen with walls and walls of colors and patterns ranging from amazingly gorgeous to strangely funky. They also have an amazing selection of elastics, glitter, buttons, and more. The best part? Their prices cannot be beat. Fabric is sold either at absurdly cheap prices by the yard ($1.99 for most types) or by the pound - a light fabric sold by the pound means about $9 for 7-8 yards! No american express accepted, no air conditioning, and no organization of fabric, but if you're willing to invest a solid hour or two going through all the aisles you can really find some amazing stuff. read more

I had forgotten how much I love this place. I was first recommended it by my fashion professor at El Camino over 10 years and let me tell you it's a lot nicer inside now than it used to be. We used to joke that you needed a miners helmet to find your hidden bargains. Prices are high too but not too bad I spent an hour here the other day sitting and going through every single piece of denim they had and managed to score quite a few lengths of Cone Selvedge denim for a few $. I took everything they had and still got change from a $10. I refolded everything too so that section is nice and neat now. read more

i'm disgusted & discrimination at it's best and not covid safe.....as a long time customer dedicated to the craft i walked out of the store today very frustrated & leary about my safety about shopping in the store. i was waiting first in line to be rung up after my fabric had already been cut from the sales associated (usually since my fabric was cut whomever approaches the register would ring me up) as i was standing there first in line the sales rep began to ring up a lady who just walked up and stood next to me not giving me my 6ft distance. when i asked the sales associate what was she doing she said "i was helping her so i'm about to ring her up' i said to her "you was helping me prior to helping her and i'm ready to check out and she stated "you wasn't ready" i told her i know but i'm ready now that is why i'm standing her to check out and you are willing to ring her up out of order as well as not saying anything to her about not giving me my 6ft social distances. i know the protocol to check out and she clearly didn't adhere to it and within just seconds after that the next sales rep did the same exact thing she rung another customer up who had to reach in front of me to get to the pin pad and when i said "what are you doing"? you are violating my space and not honoring the social distance" the customer said nothing and both sales reps said nothing to the customer. i could not believe my eyes. so in addition of being treated like crap and not recognized as a paying customer they did not practice law order of keeping your customers safe .there is no safe practices in that that store at all. i know it is hard to regulate the traffic while shopping but the line at the register is the perfect way and time to assure all customers are safe and they did nothing to protect me or the safety of others they are not keeping a clean work station, they are not disinfecting the area the pin pad the counters are not being cleaned, nothing and on top of that they discriminated against me and i believe it is because i'm black because the other customers that they rung up with priority were not black and neither are the sales associates ... needless to say i am done with sas fabrics....that fabric is not all that anyway especially for what i just went through..signed very upset customer read more

SAS really is as good as it gets when it comes to great, affordable deals on fabrics, trims, knick-knacks, and BUTTONS!! My god, there are just bins and bins of buttons in this store. As a previous reviewer mentioned, fabric is sold by the pound here...usually averages like, $2.99 per pound or something, although they often have specials where it is a few dimes cheaper. However, not all fabric is sold by the pound; some yards are between $2-5, which is still an AMAZING deal! There are also great bargain bins with fabric remnants (which are still full yards...not little pieces) for only 99 cents. I picked up zippers for a quarter each last time I was there. I never go into SAS looking for something specific. I'm always inspired somehow and end up with a basket of stuff. There's apparel fabric, knits, fleece, upholstery material...everything. Plus, there are plenty of items that change regularly: one week, they'll have potholders and ponytail holders and the next will have something cheesy like stickers or something. My friend recommended this place to me and I'm glad he did. This is a wonderful fabric shop if you are willing to hunt for what you want. I would compare it to discount shopping for clothes instead of going to the department store- things are a more disorganized and you have less help from salespeople but you are trading those things in for a great bargain. I actually expected this place to be even crazier- like Michael Levine's Loft. Instead, most of the fabric was nicely organized into different general categories- rayons, chiffons, cotton prints, jersey knits, etc. This shop is particularly good for knit fabrics and home furnishing fabrics. It isn't as good with wovens beyond the collection of cotton prints. There was a very small selection of linens, almost all of which were undyed. There was a similarly small selection of wool blends but only in conservative, suit style prints and colors. I think this shop would be particularly ideal if you are any good at draping or making your clothes without patterns since the material amount you're getting is highly variable. I'm going to try my hand at draping with one of the knits- hope to get a tank top out of it. read more

Did not have a large selection of the type of cotton print (beach pants) I was hoping for, but, what an amazing and diverse selection... If I were making a Halloween costume or something dressy or looking for fabric craft materials, I would start here. I picked up some organza to make flower hair clips, looked at the boxes of trims and ribbons... I did find one piece of something I could use and it was so inexpensive it was worth the drive. The sales people were really nice and very helpful, it was obvious I was new to the place and one offered to point me in the right directions. About the comments made by those frustrated about not being allowed to bring their dogs in. I don't want dog mixed with my shopping (or food). Some people are considerate about their pets, too many are not. I watched a woman shopping lingerie set her small dog on the display of undies, have seen dogs lunging out attempting to bit other shoppers. Wild children and yapping dogs do not make for a nice shopping experience and I appreciate owners who have the respect for other shoppers to keep the place pet free. read more

Best fabric store in the South Bay. It's the cheapest place I've been to with great quality fabrics. It's waaay better to go here than to Joann's or even Walmart. They have a wide arrange of fabrics, thread is really cheap (50¢ each with different colors), and the place is pretty big with rows and rows of fabric. The minimum amount of fabric to buy is a yard. Also, there is a minimum amount you have to spend in order to use debit/credit (it might be 10$ or 15$, I forgot). Parking is scarce at times. There is a small parking lot in the back but if there isn't any space, park on the street (just make sure you read the signs). If you want to buy some fabric and you're in the neighborhood, go here. If I want a little sense of adventure in my fabric shopping, this is where I go. They have a vast selection of knit fabrics for sale by the pound, as well as lots of upholstery fabrics and home decor fabrics and things with crazy sequins by the yard. Their selection of woven cottons--like quilting cottons--is weak and pretty "meh," so I think it's way better for clothing, costumes, and decorating than for quilting. They've got all kinds of notions and trim--everything from fold-over-elastic for 10 cents a yard, to lace trims of infinite styles. If you want to sew with jersey knit, they've got a ton of options. It's fun to dig through the piles of fabric in search of a gem, and there's pretty much endless possibility. They've got some treasures like African fabrics, and bargains like 25 cent zippers, a wall of buttons and more. Nordstroms is to a great 99-cent store what a sweet, local quilt or fabric shop is to SAS. Totally different shopping experiences, but if you're ready, it can be just the great deal and afternoon of adventure you're looking for. Someday I'll do a calculation to figure out what the average yardage of a pound of fabric is. read more
