My boyfriend brought me here for lunch one day. I work right across the street from it and never noticed it was there. Gem hidden in plain sight. When we went it was a one man show so there was a lot of waiting on the one guy that was doing everything. Aside from that, he was extremely pleasant, the place was clean, and the food was amazing! Meat was perfectly cooked. Rice was seasoned well. Salad and sauces complimented both. Don't forget to try the hummus here. Even if you're not a fan of hummus, you will fall in love with it here. Service was excellent, and the Iced Tea was exceptional. The hummus was better than most store bought. Food was much too doughy and bland. Spinach pie was dough square with 1 oz of frozen spinach and minced onions. Husband had pizza, I had entrees of many items as there was no sample platter as one would find at Lebanese Taverna for instance. This is a hidden gem. A little awkward placement but you're really missing out if you don't try them. The Sasuns Kebab Platter is what I came back for. The ground beef kebab and the rice are very flavorful. I normally prefer lamb but this will do! My husband had gotten the classic steak and cheese and he actually liked it as well. The place is homey and has that ma and pa feel. The gentleman that helped us that evening was also very kind and accommodating to our family of 4. He even let us try the zaatar which was also interestingly tasty. All in all a very good experience that kept me thinking about their beef kebab platter that I went back to order carry out. Today was my first time at this restaurant,although I live close by and have driven past many times... I recently tried Mediterranean food for the first time and decided to give this place a try... Don't be fooled by its modest exterior and small crowds. Sasuns seems to be a nice neighborhood hangout: good food, a half-dozen bottled beer choices, and good prices. Although service was on the slower side (maybe short staffed) , the food was fantastic! I had the chicken shawarma platter which was very tasty and my significant other had one of the combination platters (had chicken and beef kabob). His chicken kabob was so tender and juicy. We've eaten there twice now and are very impressed. When you go please remember your food is prepared when you order it so expect 18-20 minutes for your kebab to arrive. Well worth the wait as the meat is not dry as so often the case for kebabs but is moist and succulent instead. Proper cooking and careful spicing are both apparent and the result is absolutely delicious. My husband tried the whole beef kebab platter while I had the combination kebab platter. Beef tenderloin, chicken breast and ground beef were all perfectly cooked. Better yet the rice pilaf was equally well seasoned and tasty and the salad was crispy fresh and not drowned in dressing. The chicken souvlaki platter is the same yummy chicken chunks but in a soft pita with lettuce and tomato and served with fries. All are accompanied with their very good tzatziki (yogurt) sauce. I like to have leftovers for additional meals so we also tried several excellent appetizers. The mutabal plate is a roasted eggplant dip with deep, smoky flavor and creamy texture. The cheese canoe pie was gooey and addictive with a yeast bread "canoe" that was chewy but not heavy. Amazingly, it was almost as good at room temperature the next day as it was hot out of the oven. We got dessert to take home as well. I'm not usually a big fan of baklava as I find it overly sticky & sweet. But their Walnut Kunafa is great! It is made with a shredded phyllo dough called kataifi and a layer of sweetened, ground walnuts. The result is just the right amount of sweetness plus a delightful crunchiness from the crispy phyllo. We've been going over at lunchtime which has worked out well because it's not very crowded and we had a chance to talk to the owner, Vache, and his daughter, Sophie. Vache's family is Armenian so it's no surprise their Mediterranean-style food is so very good. The place is very casual, and also very relaxed. For food this good it's better not to be in a rush BUT I could see the place does an excellent takeout business so that's a good option too. read more

When a friend told me about $5 chicken shawarma special at Sasun's on Tuesdays, I decided to try it out. Ordering and pickup was fast although I thought it was strange when I was the only one there to get food (maybe covid?). Well, I was also pretty disappointed in what I got. I know there are different types of shawarma around the world and I've had my fair share. But this really amounted to just a grilled chicken breast wrap. Based on the meat, it didn't seem to be cut from a spit or rotisserie where you get chucks of different sizes including many crunchy, flavorful pieces for a change in texture. I did like that it traveled well, as it was still warm when I got home and the pita itself was tasty. The star however was the walnut kunafa; possibly the best I've ever had. Its very similar to baklava, but instead of phyllo layers, they use phyllo strips. It actually looks like fried angel hair pasta, but the walnut filling was heavenly. read more

Not sure what they do to it to get it that creamy, but whatever it is just keep doing that. This dish alone would bring me back time and again if they served it with warm freshly made pita. Greek salad was super-fresh and very tasty. Didn't realize how big of a salad it was going to be, but managed to eat it all regardless. The kebab combo was hit and miss. The chicken breast (which I usually don't enjoy so much) was amazing. Tender, well seasoned chunks of chicken breast cooked to perfection. I really didn't care for the ?ground beef kabab that came with it. It was seasoned well, and cooked well, but it was dry compared with the chicken breast (yeah, go figure) and I just didn't care for it. Sides that came with the kebob platter were all delish including the rice which actually tasted better than it looked. Overall this is a place worth patronizing. They have done a lot with cleaning up the spot (I remember when this was a dive crab shack), everything was very fresh and cooked to order, service was polite and efficient, and I'm all for supporting local family businesses. The falafel here is the best I've had in America outside of the marvelous old kosher joints in Queens. It was so good it took me back to the days when my dear husband was courting me in Jerusalem. The mutabal is perfect -- you might recognize its other name, baba ghanoush -- smoky, creamy, garnished with rich olive oil and a dark purple olive. My dining companion, who is of Lebanese extraction, pronounced the kibbe and the kabob to be quite good. Only two quibbles. One, the pita is a bit sad. Too thin. I like a heftier pita. Two, the service is quite lackadaisical. I will make sure that I'm not pressed for time in any way for my next visit. But I plan to visit again for sure, and that right soon. My review can easily be changed to 5 stars since I plan on returning, but my first experience was a bit of a confusing one. First off, let's cut to the chase. The food is super fresh. It's obvious. Like when the salad came out I was "wowed". It actually made me kind of mad about all the white tomatoes I've been getting lately at other restaurants. The shwarma platter was also good. Fresh, fresh, fresh. When I first got in, I had no clue where to go. The owner (I'm guessing) just kind of stared at me for 30 seconds. AWK! So I said "one please?" followed by more confusion and then me ordering off a carryout menu NEXT to the counter. The guy was a sweet man, so it's whatevs, it really didn't bother me. It also took about another 15 minutes for him to run my check. TLDR: Food's good. Just come in, go up to the counter, order, and sit down somewhere and everything will eventually work itself out. I have always wanted to try the food at this Mediterranean Restaurant which also specializes in Pizza and other casual foods and an opportunity presented itself when I was visiting Derwood. I took advantage of their Thursday special of $5 Gyros to try it. It was a large Gyro and had some good Tzatziki sauce. The Gyro meat just seemed a tad bit salty but cooked well. What blew me and earned the extra star was the Lahmajun! This thin crispy flatbread was so flavorful with enough smokiness to the herbs, meat topping that I simply devoured it! I will definitely go back and try more of the menu and might take some friends along. The other thing was the warmth and friendliness of the lady at the front desk and a gentleman I perceived as the chef who made eye contact with a smile and gave a bow when I complimented him on the Lahmajun. They have both outdoor seating (on a deck with colorful Umbrellas) and indoor seating as well. Ideal for my friends to get together. The prices are also very reasonable! read more

We had this amazing desert before our dinner and we loved it, then our platters came and we were again amazed and how good the food not only looked, but tasted. Such a cute little building with indoor and outdoor seating. We got two full kabob platters, dessert, and two drinks for $31.
