I've eaten from her plate many times - all ingredients delicious. Always interesting spreads and flavor depths. English Muffin made in-house. Yum. I repeat the lox sandwich a lot. It's an upscale take on a standard lox & bagel: nicely smoked salmon with capers, served on some homemade bread with a cool horseradish/cream cheesy spread and topped with various pickled relish they've made that week. Great stuff. Also I get pulled in by the specials, they are always something creative based on limited availability ingredients that piqued their curiosity and always delicious. The whole place is very organized and clean. I really like the many sauces that you can try with your food. I am not chili sauce kind of person but enjoyed the experiences. Im not quite sure how anyone could ever rate this place under 5 stars. I have been living in Andersonville for the past 6 yrs. As someone who really takes an obsessive appreciation for the plethora of dining options on the 'strip' (or main drag of restaurants along clark st.), I was pleasantly surprised by how remarkably fresh and delicious the food is here. I had been hearing about this place for quite some time but never thought to make it the whole entire mile (or maybe mile and a half) up north down clark st (just into edgewater) to give it a try. Big mistake. Not going to waste my time talking about the plates my fiancé and I shared other than to say they were nothing but remarkable. We were fortunate to have been offered several tastes of other menu items. After spending well over an hour soaking in all the deliciousness, we came to realize what a gem we had found. There is nowhere in Andersonville whose menu offers this type of quality and execution for breakfast/brunch. After experiencing the food, we quickly learned how much love and technique goes into the stuff being served here. It is completely ok that the menu is not huge. I've only been here for the bread after having some at a book party. It was so amazing I had to ask where they got it from and then somehow make it there in spite of their very weird hours. Healthy portions and convenient, safe carry out. Totally convinced these are the best pastries in the city. Ricotta poundcake blew us away. The addition of more produce, cheese, eggs, dry goods, and drinks - largely from the best local producers - makes for even more reason to stop by. I even made off with a beautiful dry aged ribeye steak butchered on premises. I've waited to review sauce and bread until I've come by a few times, but I've loved it since my first visit! Aside from the fact that it's my top neighborhood choice for a weekend meal, I've always had the best experience with the folks who run it. It's refreshing to come to a place and meet the brains AND labor behind it all. These folks have a really beautiful and passionate vision for this place that values local, home grown, and independent spirit. And there's no lack of creativity when it comes to the menu. Every dish is fresh and complex, full of wonderful details like pickled veggies, smoked meats, and puffed grains. Though the menu isn't explicitly vegetarian or vegan, they are super accommodating and generous with their substitutions, and will even joyfully make something original and inspired, just for you. They are so thoughtful about each of their ingredients (all como from the Midwest!) and love describing the process behind everything (and *every* ingredient has a poetic back story). They even explained how we could puff our own grains using an air popcorn machine. They also serve Klarbrunn seltzer, which frankly embarrasses La Croix. It's obvious these folks are passionate about what they do. It's a labor of love that is always trying to do more. The only downside is that they're only open on weekends (for now, hopefully)! I would give it 5 stars if after spending $12.00 or $14.00 I could leave there and feel as though I had a meal. I'm always still hungry after I leave there. What they really need is to supplement their breakfast and lunch sandwiches with a hearty side dish like potatoes or beans, something to stick to your ribs. Everything they serve seems fresh and home-made so I can't see having a couple of bags of chips with my eggs. The ginger pear cake was out of this world, Great ginger flavor without being over powering, balanced with the sweet whole pear baked in the desert. Went great with the coffee. The service is very good and everyone is friendly and welcoming. They have their own bloody Mary mix, it's BYOV. Actually I just bought a loaf of whole wheat - the best fresh whole wheat loaf I've tasted in a long time - @ Logan Square Farmers Market ~ held winters on Milwaukee. The baker tells us that she is going to start taking orders for her breads that can be picked up during the week at Tipsy Cakes at Division and California in Humboldt Park. She and another artisan baker are producing their products at the Tipsy Cake Bakery. She will take your email for announcements of products .. next is going to be a savory bread. This Farmers Market is rocking this winter thanks in part to this baker! read more

Gem of a restaurant. Context, I'm from San Francisco where we have some pretty good eateries... many of them quite expensive, many of them have quite predictable menus, some of them look like they were designed on some standardized restaurant template, many of the better ones are so crowded it's hard to get in... and it's a killer to find parking. So it was great to find Sauce and Bread Kitchen which beats our joints in all these categories. Start with the exposed brick walls with original artwork, add the open friendly vibe (and it's not too loud) then enjoy the staff which is friendly but not insincerely so. But the best part is the "original" delicious food, baked and created on site. I trusted the special which was the best lasagna I've ever eaten-a little heat, lots of ricotta and some crunchy cheese on the edges. Everyone in our party of five was more than satisfied with our main courses, and the desserts were fabulous. Michael and Ann, the owners, took the time to say hello to us, and it seemed like they did the same for every other patron. Great neighborhood feel. I think they do special events. I adore SBK, and will miss it a great deal once my boyfriend no longer lives in Rogers Park. In a neighborhood like the Ukrainian Village, it would be easy to overlook this gem amid the sea of coffee shops and adorable brunch spots - but in Rogers Park, it stands out from the myriad delicious ethnic restaurants as the best spot for brunch or a late lunch on the weekends. I have yet to be disappointed by their sandwiches, most of which come with a wee salad, or their soup of the day, which generally comes with a few generous slices of their house-made Crumb bread. I'm not a hot sauce kind of girl, but if you're into that, you have at least half a dozen Co-op options on hand. Get anything with their pimento cheese, and thank me later. The menu is short and doesn't seem to change all that often, but that's fine when the standards are solid and the daily specials interesting. I like that they have a prominent map showing where most of their ingredients are sourced. My impression is that the two staff members I've seen on the weekends are also the owners, and they're consistently friendly. Their prices are competitive with Heartland Cafe, but the quality is much higher and more consistent, even if their portion sizes are smaller. I've never left hungry or unhappy. With free street parking on Sunday and some of the best bread I've had in the city, you really can't go wrong. read more

For me, Crumb is one of the highlights when I go to the Logan Sq. Farmer's Market. I'm a big time bread lover and I've been nothing but impressed by crumb when I've visited their stand and bought a boule. Now, these aren't really cheap loaves of bread, but that is also the point. You're getting something hand made and at a much higher quality than you'd find in a grocery store. It's usually $6 a loaf, but, they do seem to go a long way as well. My favorite from them is the semolina boule. It's worked out perfectly for me when I make an osso buco and have it as bread on the side. I also would say, don't skip out on their focaccias as they rotate and are all delicious. Granted, I would say don't skip out on anything from here as it's all extremely good. I just wish Crumb had a storefront for me to pop in and buy. Still, I'm at the farmer's market when I can, and I will keep buying loaves from Crumb because of how awesome they are. read more
