Very causal set up with a wonderful calzone menu. My wife got Figy piggy, my daughter roasty toasty and I tried the magic carpet ride. All three tastes were excellent. We ordered two large Ceaser salads taste great as well. We added a bottle of very decent Cabernet for only $25. I could finish my calzone. My wife and daughter ate their leftovers the next day. My wife and I came across the quite little place on accident. The staff was outstanding one we came in we were given a detailed briefing on the establishment. The restaurant specializes in calzones with special sauces on the side. They also have a great selection of freshly made salads and a soft drink dispenser with sodas from Illinois. Tried for the first time last week and we enjoyed it! The calzones were very large and they have lots of options and different sauces. If you build your own, like we did... it gets pricey! It wasn't terrible and it wasn't great either. I found it to be expensive for mostly dough. One calzone and a fountain drink ended up being $15 for my lunch! I'm pretty sure I could make what I had at home for $5. If you do a build your own, the add on prices are ridiculous! $1.00 extra for banana peppers (and some other items), and $1.50 for capers (apparently these are the expensive add on's)! There are 4 other pizza places in walking proximity from the restaurant with better pizza. I doubt I'll be going back anytime soon. read more

I went in for carry out and it wasn't busy. I ordered the "Beet Me" salad and the gyro calzone. It took about 25 minutes and there were no beets in my salad. The calzone was just ok For $23 I think it is over priced. read more

We ate there on a Friday at 7pm. We were surprised it was very busy. We placed our order to go, and I understand the place is new, but the ordering process was painful. We ordered the Duke and a Build your own. I don't like how the Build your own is SO MUCH more expensive for less toppings. We had 5 options, with one being cheese, and it was $13.50. It comes with ricotta and it was overpowering - just too much volume. There was hardly any onion and their spicy sausage is weird. It's like huge thick slices of summer sausage. Gross texture. Again to ordering they confused our sauces, didn't ring them up so I paid for another thinking they missed it. We ended up with an extra we didn't need. The Duke has good fillings but the dough was undercooked. I made the mistake of curing into a few slices and the filling falls everywhere. The buffalo butter was the best but let's be real - it was like jarred buffalo sauce. I was expecting more of a spicy butter. But the flavor was good. The house red was super basic, the spicy had more flavor. The Duke comes with BBQ trance. It was super runny so not dippable and the flavor tasted like balsamic ranch. For a place to out so much emphasis on sauces, I thought they were all lacking and need a major step up. We were excited to try several of the versions but I don't think we'll be back. Oh and the takeout took about 30 min. When it was ready, they don't call your name, or give you a card for your table so we saw our stuff sit there for about 5 min until someone just started walking around with it. It was very unorganized. We also got to watch the cashier cleaning cups and someone rolling silverware right out in the open when you come in. What I like about Sauce on the Side is the large menu of calzone options with all sorts of different fillings and sauces, and you can also make your own. I do not care for marinara sauce so I was glad to have multiple non-red sauce options. I picked a calzone with pesto chicken and pesto sauce. I liked the smaller cuts of chicken, as I don't like it when "filling" chicken pieces are too large. I like that there are several solid salad options to choose from. When I return with my family, I will not always be wanting something as heavy as a calzone, so I will certainly try one of the salads. The desserts look tempting too - will have to try that on another visit. As other reviews stated, you order at the counter and get a number, then they deliver to your table. We were greeted by the nicest young gentleman who explained the menu to us. We really liked the soda fountain with "craft" sodas instead of the standard Pepsi/Coke fare. I don't drink carbonated beverages, so I was happy to have a lemonade option, and the craft lemonade was so much better than traditional soda fountains carry. I came here pre-covid but did not post a review I guess. I'd like to review it now to say that it has great Calzones. My family loves Calzones...and I often make them at home. They are always loved, but when we tried professional Calzones here at Sauce on the Side...I think my Calzone making days are over. These folks know how to make Calzones! It was very delicious and I really want to come more often. I think when this pandemic is over, we will put Sauce on the Side on more of a rotational preference. I had the Carmen, and it was very....VERY good. My wife is a vegetarian so she had the Garden, but she did say it was a little soggy for her taste. I had experience with veggie heavy calzones when making them myself, and vegetables tend to sweat a lot when cooked, making the dough a little more soggy....just keep that in mind. First off I can not recommend this restaurant during the Covid shutdowns. They do not have a working phone number, when calling the phone listed on their website and window, it said the wireless phone was not in service. Which is unprofessional and I can hardly consider them to be a real business without a working phone. In addition, they do not seem to have the staff on hand during the shutdown to handle both customers and food prep. As far as the food goes, it is quite good. The price seems high but it is reflected in the quality ingredients. I'm not a fan of the calzones that feature ricotta cheese however, in my mind good calzones really rely on mozzarella. This was my favorite calzone place to go to whenever I was in St. Louis so I was thrilled when one was built a mile down the road from my house. I ordered the Meat me in St Louie which I have had before in St Louis and it was not up to par with what I remembered. There was SO MUCH cheese like you open up the calzone and it's cheese, cheese, more cheese, and a little bit of meat. The name has the word "meat" so I was very disappointed when majority of the calzone was cheese. Both of my family members got the same one and agreed with me. Very different calzone in Carmel than in St Louis, I'm sure there are other good options on the menu but even drenching each bite into the meat sauce didn't balance out the meat-cheese ratio. Called ahead to order for curbside pick up during covid quarantine. Was told 15 minutes. When I checked in on time, they took my payment and told me 5 more minutes. 55 minutes later they brought me my order - both calzones were burned. They clearly knew it was going to take 70 minutes (or should have) but lied to me again about their inability to deliver on time when I got there. This was supposed to be a treat for me to have the convenience of not having to make dinner, but they turned it into a huge inconvenience. For the price it is a bargain! The calzones are a good size and they don't skimp on filling. Ingredients were fresh and it came out piping hot and delicious. One of our calzones was made incorrectly and the waitress went above and beyond to make it right. The fancy glasses are a pain when we want the rest of our drink to go. It was our first time and we were a little confused on what they offered and didn't have anyone to ask until we flagged someone down to order at the counter. Waitresses were preoccupied running orders and doing stuff behind the window. For a new restaurant a little more welcoming and a quick hello, any questions about the menu, or a how can i help you would have been nice. There is a choice if salad or calzones. Easy walking distance of the Hilton Garden Inn. My husband had the "Meat Me in Saint Louis" and I had the "Magic Carpet Ride" (mushroom calzone). Since it was his birthday, we split a caramel apple pie for dessert. The restaurant team members were FANTASTIC. Service was great and I even found a new beer based upon the excellent recommendation from one of tge team members (might have been the manager?). We'll be back next time we are in the Indy area. We love Sauce on the Side! When our family was in St Louis for a little family getaway about a year ago, we tried it there and really liked it. So when we heard they were coming to Indy, we were very excited! It did not disappoint. The calzones are really good. They aren't just your typical pizza place calzones. They have those, for sure, but think outside the box. My wife really enjoys the Pancho Villa, their Mexican inspired calzone with filling like chorizo and jalapeños, with queso on the side. I had their Magic Carpet Ride before, which has just about every kind of mushroom imaginable, and on my most recent visit I tried their Travel Channel famed Cock A Doodle Noodle, with Mac n Cheese, Roasted Chicken, and buffalo butter on the side. We've had the chance to sample others with friends, and so far none have disappointed. If you're looking for carby, saucy deliciousness, definitely pay Sauce on the Side a visit. read more

A hidden gem and a bright spot during the pandemic! Thank goodness they are not located closer to me, as I would eat this magical folded pizza daily! Don't let the photos scare you, these calzones are huge but the dough is a light pillow. I describe it as almost a light dingy pretzel dough. Any one of the side sauces is a good choice. I enjoyed the garlic butter and pesto. If going with a friend, I recommend sharing a couple or few different calzones so you can try more than one. Great for lunch or dinner. The calzones are absolutely delicious! We had the Gonzo and the Duke. The ingredients are fresh and tasty with a variety of yummy house-made sauces. I must also mention the freshly baked, perfectly buttery calzone crust. There is a nice variety of beverages including the craft sodas which are our favorite choice. The staff provide great customer service that is friendly, helpful, and efficient. The venue itself has a fun, upbeat ambiance. I don't know who thought it was a good idea to offer provel cheese and ricotta blend in calzones but it doesn't belong and is gooey and disgusting.
