After probably a year of saying I wanted to try this place, I finally made it. I wasn't quite sure what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in. Somehow, they manage to be simple yet elegant with everything they have to offer. The atmosphere was very casual, you seat yourself and order at the register, then they bring you your food. Soft-drinks are self serve. The menu has something for everyone! I was very tempted to order a salad, but decided on my first visit I couldn't pass up a calzone! The problem was choosing one. Both I and my date were happy with our selections (The Puttanesca and the current special, the Mayflower). I was also impressed by the wine and beer selection. Can't wait to come back for a salad, but I think the calzone was a bit filling for me to repeat any time soon (come hungry!). Also, parking at dinner time is not super easy, all street and downtown Clayton doesn't offer a cornucopia of spots, so be ready to walk. read more

I was introduced to Sauce on the Side when I first began contracting. Everyone on my team loved SOTS(sorry, but I shortened your name a long time ago) I love the atmosphere of the place. It is a great date location to take your date, but not that kid friendly, which is perfectly okay with me. I will be making a few visits per year and trying eat of their options. Calzone heaven! Had the "what came first", had the chicken and the egg, definitely tasted the tender flavor chicken first. The egg was there but secondary to the flavors, which included fresh jalapeño and onion. Probably one of the coolest experiences I had while dining in St. Louis. Right when we walked in I noticed it was a very welcoming and trendy atmosphere. I went on a Monday night so it wasn't too crowded either which made it nice. I ordered the Cock-a-Doodle Noodle calzone which came filled with mac n cheese, chicken, bacon and green onion. The very nice and helpful girl that was taking my order recommended getting queso as my sauce, I obliged, and was not disappointed. The calzone was perfectly crispy and the chicken and bacon really balanced out the creaminess of the mac n cheese. The queso was outstanding and had a lot of flavor. Thank you manager Matt and the team at Sauce on the Side in Clayton. I ordered from your location for the first time tonight and placed that order through grub hub. It was easy to make modifications to the order, thank you. Unfortunately, the order arrived incorrectly. I looked to make sure I had not made an error in my placement of the order and indeed the kitchen made the mistake. The grub hub delivery service, while convenient, delayed delivery of my order until it was cold in addition to wrong. I called the restaurant and spoke with Matt, the manager, he apologized and promised a replacement that he would make himself. About 30 minutes later a hot, perfectly delicious calzone arrived. I did not realize that Matt had delivered the order himself. Thank you Matt and Sauce on the Side for the excellent customer service and attention. A wide variety of "traditional" but also some wacky ones as well. If you are looking for a meat-free or non-red sauce calzone, check out the magic carpet ride calzone. It's chock full of mushrooms and is absolutely delicious! I'm not a huge dessert guy but the apple pie calzone and Nutella and banana calzone are both delicious! DRINK: Limited, local, microbrews on tap but a very robust variety of bottle and can craft beers; both local and national. No liquor drinks. Excel sodas available in bottles and fountain soda! We were in St. Louis for a nearby wedding and decided to stop in here for dinner one night because they were one of only a handful of places still open. They had great reviews so we decided to drive a little out of our way to eat here rather than some of the other places open closer to our hotel. We were not disappointed! My co-worker and I were in town for business and chose this place based off of Yelp! reviews. It didn't disappoint. We ordered quickly and each had a side salad, a calzone, and a local draft beer recommended by the cashier. The caesar side salad was great. I ordered mine with the dressing on the side as I despise an overly dressed salad. The dressing appeared to have a sprinkling of mustard seeds throughout which gave it a wonderful flavor. One of the best caesar dressings in my opinion. I would have liked to have had salt and pepper shakers on the table, however. I ordered the Carmen calzone. It had excellent flavor and the crust was thin yet soft so that it didn't over shadow the ingredients. A very well made calzone. read more

OMG best calzones EVER. So I had a long day at work and hubby found this little gem on Yelp. They were featured on the travel channel and we figured it was a must try. We haven't done carbs in a long time but hubby won the biggest loser challenge at work and we came here to celebrate. They were all divine, flavorful and filled with cheesy goodness. We almost didn't order the meat me, since it didn't read 'different,' but it was our favorite. I ordered the Fatty B Calzone which was jam packed with Meatballs, Pepperoni, ricotta cheese, Priceline cheese, mozzarella cheese, and roasted garlic! Nice place, atmosphere was very appealing! Just go here. BECAUSE you will eat the best calzone you can find in the area. They are made to order so although you can choose a signature option, you can also customize and make one your own way. The sauce options really bring the taste levels up even more. I had the Fatty B- meatballs, onions, pepperoni, mozzarella, ricotta, and I think I'm missing some other stuff but it was large enough for leftovers. I got the pesto sauce and the queso sauce. They were both great but I'm a sucker for some good pesto which this was. It's a pay up front type place and street parking is free in the area after 5pm. I finally had the chance to visit this location of SOTS and like its sister location downtown, it's a nice space. Handmade tables, big windows, clean, easy to get in and out. Parking can be iffy as it is in Clayton, but on a Saturday at lunch time it was no problem. I ordered my standard: the fold with BBQ ranch. I also got a small strawberry fields salad. Both came out quickly and were delicious. They have got flavor down here. I love how they have Ski sodas on tap. I got lemonade and it was great. Not your typical minute maid.
