A hidden gem! The menu items are all super unique from figs to mac and cheese. The service is friendly, the food does not take too long to come out. Additionally, there are unique fountain sodas to try (at least, I from Kansas have not heard of these brands). I tried the cockadoodle noodle (chicken, bacon, mac and cheese with a side of buffalo sauce). The calzone itself is HUGE, about the size of my face! The outside was nice and crisp and plump with filling. The filling itself could be a little more flavorful, but I'm guessing that's what the sauce is for. In terms of sauce, you can also ask for substitutions -- the garlic sauce is the bomb! I would recommend this place for those looking for something light yet filling. read more

When I discovered that there was a restaurant in STL devoted to calzones, I about flipped with excitement. I ordered a make-your-own calzone with cheese, pepperoni, and banana peppers with the garlic dipping sauce for pick up. When I went to pick it up, I realized I didn't have my credit card with me. The staff was very understanding and tried to help me figure out if there was another way I could pay. Alas, I had to run home and get my credit card, but boy was it worth it! If you're a lover of calzones then you shouldn't pass this place up. I got the calzone with mozzarella, eggplant and pepperoni. It was very tasty and I can't say I have ever had a better calzone. The "sauce on the side" was good but tasted as if there were olives in it. Olives are the only food I despise so I was not a fan of the sauce and wished they had other, more descriptive options. Fortunately, the calzone was so filled with tasty ingredients I didn't feel the need to use much sauce. This a great spot for takeout- the calzones reheat great in an oven. I gave this place four stars because it is a solid concept with very good food. I almost gave them three stars however because of service. The two women working up front were kind and helpful. I thought they did a great job. But as I was waiting for my to go order (about 15-20min) the manager (I assume) scolded the people working up front in front of the whole place. He wasn't yelling but was very unprofessional and cold. Who scolds their staff in front of customers? The worst part was the dejected and mortified face of the young woman after his 'scolding'. All calzones all the time! Side note: they also have salads, but I skipped out on that and just went for the main event. There are so many calzone and sauce options that it's difficult to choose! I ended up with the calzone stuffed with eggplant, mozzarella, basil, and roasted garlic with their traditional red sauce...holy yum! It was amazing--and HUGE! You could go to Sauce on the Side every day for a month a never have the same calzone/sauce combination. I was introduced to this restaurant by an ex. The best thing to come out of that relationship was to the introduction to Sauce on the Side! Sauce on the Side never disappoints. Today I shared a Fatty B calzone and a smokehouse salad with a friend. Both items were perfection. This was my first time having a salad and the smokehouse was delicious! The salad was tossed in tasty BBQ Ranch Dressing. The salad had large chunks of pancetta which added the perfect dash of salt. I was highly impressed by the salad. So the Fatty B calzone was picked by my friend. I normally order the Carmen. I am so happy I tried the Fatty B. It very filling. I tried this restaurant for the first time and had mixed reviews about the food. There is a vast array of options for calzones with TONS of sauces. I ended up ordering the garden calzone with the recommended red sauce. The calzone was very large (see picture for reference) and very filling. There was no shortage of vegetables nor cheese in the calzone. However, I personally found the flavor (esp. garlic flavor) to be very strong, almost just overpowering. I'd be interested in going back to try a different calzone but probably would not have the garden calzone again. Also fyi, this is also definitely not a first date place. They have so many great choices and if you don't like one that they've designed, you can design your own. The sauce comes on the side to dip your calzone in. They do offer some amazing looking salads as well. Their soda is Excel so a bit different but I wouldn't expect anything else from a place like this. This was our second visit. First time I had the magic carpet one with mushrooms. Both times my wife had the cockadoodle doo one. This time I had the meat me in St. Louie. You know, it doesn't really matter what you order here, but definitely choose a calzone. These are the absolute best calzones you have had anywhere. Prefect crust. Superb sauce on the side. Some fabulous original soda pop on tap. I highly recommend the grapefruit one or the citrus ones. But the lemonade is delicious too. Walk up and order and pay at the counter, they'll bring you your plate. These are large and filling. It's urban parking so look around. It's good this isn't close to my house. This is my 100th Yelp review and it might as well be a 5 star review as I enjoyed my dinner last night. I went to Sauce on the Side for my first time last night with my mom. This location has only been open a week. They did a nice remodel of the store. There are nice wood floors and the bar has a beautiful marble counter. Right by the entrance are paper menus rolled up nicely and ordering is done all at the counter (where there is another large menu on the wall behind the bar) and the food is brought to the table. Silverware is wrapped up in linen and stored in a container on the table. The restaurant seems to be staffed very well. Workers were diligently cleaning tables right after customers left as well as greeting people as they came and left. We shared all the food we ordered which was the duke calzone and the beet salad. Both were delicious. After we finished the main course, we split the banana and nutella calzone for dessert. Dessert was truly the highlight. I don't know if it's because I generally try to avoid desserts and haven't had sweets in a long time but this calzone was amazing. Highly recommend. Although we stayed with ice water for a beverage, there looks to be about 50 bottled beers available as wells as about 5 on tap. I have a feeling this place will do well with the Clayton lunch crowd. Sauce on the Side has been a favorite ever since they first opened in downtown, and I am so happy to see them expanding downtown, in Clayton, and soon enough The Grove! However despite the Clayton location being open for a while I haven't been able to check out the Clayton location until here recently. As soon as I walked I felt a very familiar vibe, similar to the original downtown location. The friendly staff greeted me with a smile and warm welcome. while I usually stick with the Meet me in St. Louie, I noticed that they had the Cock-a-doodle-noodle calzone on the menu and knew immediately that after missing this calzone in the past that I had to order it. What makes this calzone so unique is that it's served stuffed with mac&cheese, chicken, pancetta, and provel cheese and served with a buffalo butter sauce which I will admit can be a bit much however its perfection lightly brushed atop your calzone. The food here is amazing, but I am sure you already figured that out based on all the other reviews. I have had calzones at other places and the dough is always too much or tough, while at Sauce on the Side the dough is perfect, light and fluffy with a great taste. My usual, the Meet Me in St. Louie, is always great. It is served with Pepperoni, Italian Sausage, Provel, Mascarpone, and Ricotta and bushed with garlic oil and served with a side of meat sauce. There is something magical about the way the Provel, Mascarpone, and Ricotta all blend together to great an amazing blend. Simply one of the best calzones ever! Variety is the key here as there are so many ways to make your calzone, that it's really hard to decide what to get. Needless to say I have a list of calzones on my list, I think the Figgy Piggy is next on my list. Prices are reasonable for the portion size, seriously these are large calzones! This is a great place to grab a quick lunch or even a late dinner, they have a great casual atmosphere here. SOTS also have a rather large beer selection for their size so go ahead and pick one from their 40+ beer list, best off all they are open late! Overall Sauce on the Side was a great addition to downtown, and now a great addition to Clayton. I am a big fan of Sauce on the Side! I have been to both of their locations (can't wait for the third) and I have never had a bad experience. The staff is always incredibly friendly and the service is very quick considering they have to hand make all the calzones. A friend moved to STL and when we were going to meet up, I had to introduce him to this place. Needless to say, one snapchat later he and his friends will be back there tomorrow. We went for a late lunch and the place was empty but as we waited for our calzones, more people came in. I always enjoy the variety in the monthly special. Since it was the first of the month I couldn't wait for the new one. This new September one is replacing another that has made it to the regular menu. This month, "The Bulls Eye", has steak, spinach, garlic mushrooms, Fontina cheese and balsamic onions. Wow is this one great! I have been to the downtown Sauce on the Side many times but today was my first at the Clayton location. It has the same menu and the same décor. My favorite calzone is the Figgy Piggy (Applewood Smoked Bacon, Figs, Balsamic Onions, Boursin, Mozzarella, Ricotta, Garlic Honey Oil, & Red Sauce to Dip.) I ordered it today and, as usual, it was amazing. I love the creaminess of the cheeses, the saltiness of the bacon, and the sweetness of the figs. My lunch date ordered The Duke (BBQ Chicken, Applewood Smoked Bacon, Corn Salsa, Smoked Cheddar, Mozzarella, Smoked Chili Oil, & BBQ Ranch Sauce to dip.) He had never been before and he loved it! But since I was having a cheat day, I figured I might as well have a few bites of the savory calzone my hubby ordered. The Gonzo - salami, dates, spinach, Boursin, mozzarella, marscapone, ricotta and garlic oil inside, served with a side of garlic butter. I thought this sounded pretty friggin' awesome and unlike any calzone I've ever heard of. I don't know where else you'd find a calzone filled with dates! Despite the fact that all of the dates seemed to be stuck in the corners while the meat was piled high in the middle, this was a pretty delicious calzone! I have to say that the dessert calzone was not quite as impressive. It was smaller and it was packed full of as much filling as I wanted, especially when it comes to Nutella! Also, while the dough on the outside was crispy, the dough on the inside was quite under-cooked. I know some people enjoy that kind of text, but can't say I feel the same. We like this place for the delicious calzones and actually always we did the talk out order and did not have the chance to sit inside. The quality of the food is great and as mentioned is the favorite calzone place for us. I really like the staff that are nice and very helpful over the phone and they nicely answer the questions and help you with choosing the food (They are not like some places that over the phone are like "I don't know, you go figure out your order and when you are ready call us back, we Don't have time to answer your questions!" Sauce on the Side is one of those places that can be counted on to deliver again and again for any occasion. While I am not a fan of sitting in their physical location for lunch/dinner, I do love picking up their calzones to go very often. The space in Clayton is a little small, and very fast-casual in set-up. I work around this location and on occasion they will deliver to my workplace free of charge. Just one of the many pluses to the business. I honestly believe one can do no wrong ordering off of this menu. They offer salads and calzones, mainly, as well as a few dessert offerings and I've heard all excel. For my part I have tried several of their calzones and have found them all to be amazing stand out offerings. One calzone is enough to split for a meal with another person, and for around 10$, that value can not be beat. Here are a few stellar options I have tried in the past: Cock a Doodle Noodle - a standard mac n' cheese fave. Very cheesy, with just enough meat and green onion flavor to balance out. The Gonzo and The Figgy Piggy are typically my go to's as I believe they really hit the jack pot with the meat and fruit combination that these two feature so well. The Carmen is also very tasty. I look forward to trying a few of their other options, based on what I've seen they can do no wrong. This is a very unique business and I respect what they do. They do it very well. They are like no one in St. Louis. If you want a very filling meal for relatively cheap, filled with quality ingredients and prime combinations, this is your spot. read more

The calzones were delish! Seriously. Tried the Roasty Toasty and the Fatty B. Roasty Toasty had shredded chicken, red onions, garlic, and 2 cheeses with pine nuts and pesto sauce on the side. The Hubs had the Fatty B, meatballs (minus pepperoni) onions, ricotta and mozzarella cheeses served with the spicy red sauce. Each Calzone is served with an accompanying sauce...sauce on the side. We orders a couple others just to try. Garlic butter is just that, smooth creamy garlic butter which was great as it melted on the outside of the hot calzones. The BBQ ranch was tasty and tangy. Service here is counter style with self service Ski fountain drinks. I also liked how they have the Togo boxes and lids for the sauce cups next to the drink station for easy access. This calzone place is rather unassuming but absolutely delicious. They have an extensive menu but also allow you to customize those or create your own. My favorite is the one with macaroni inside, which I kind of hate how amazing it. Everything I've ever had here has been great and everyone working there has been kind to me as well.
