Found this place in close proximity to the Barnes/Wash-U medical campus - a much needed change of scenery from the hospital. Super unique and easy location to get to. The indoor vibes are simple but pleasant. Staff is super friendly - and knowledgeable- both about the food menu and local brews. Above all else - the food was great. Would love to go back to sample more menu items. If I had to offer any kind of knit-picky criticism - I personally prefer a sit down/server come to you experience. This place is built on ordering at the counter. That would be the only thing. With that said - the servers were extremely attentive and came to my table more than once to see if I needed anything. Pro tip: order the half and half meal, half salad (solid size) and a mini calzone. The chicken caesar salad was so good, and arguably better than the calzones. If you're dining with someone, it may be best to get a full size salad and full size calzone, as the mini is mostly the bread (with less stuffing). While visiting The Grove last week, I decided to order from Sauce on the Side, one of my favorite spots in the area. This was probably my third or fourth time enjoying their food, and once again, they did not disappoint. Given how consistently busy this location is--a sign of just how popular and well-loved it is--I've learned to place my order ahead of time online. This helps avoid the wait, and the process is always smooth and efficient. When I arrived, there were a few other guests waiting for their orders, but the staff kept things moving. The gentleman at the register greeted me right away with a warm, friendly attitude, and my food was ready exactly on time. The atmosphere at this location is always a highlight. They offer plenty of seating options--whether you're dining solo, with friends, or as part of a larger group--and the vibe is relaxed and welcoming. The décor and overall scenery of The Grove neighborhood only add to the experience, making it a great place to stop for a meal. As for the food: absolutely amazing, as it always is. Even though I live about 15 minutes away, my order was still piping hot by the time I sat down to enjoy it at home. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. This restaurant specials in Calzones with........yep, you guessed it, sauce on the side. They do not have much on the menu outside of calzones, salads and bite sides. They also have local sodas, beer and wine to wash your food down. Be on the lookout for their special calzone. You can get one of their signature calzones or you can build your own. They have a large dining area that is very clean and patio seating on the sidewalk in the front and side of the building. The staff there was friendly and courteous. There is metered street parking available in front of the restaurant and within a reasonable walking distance. Avoid the urge to park in the adjacent neighborhood because you may get ticketed. I ordered the special calzone, the Hot Honey Bird. It took about 15 minutes for me to get my food. It was very fresh. It was pretty good and the calzone was stuffed. I could not eat it by hand and had to use a knife and fork. The sauce on the side made it that much better.Surprisingly, the calzone filled me up. I could barely finish it. I almost got a side. From Chicago, my daughter took me here for dinner. I thought I knew what calzones were... until today! I ordered the Fatty B (5/5). The crust is super flaky and good! It had a different kind of cheese than I'm used to but the sausage and pepperoni were tasty. And it was very filling! You get a dip with your choice of calzone. My daughter got the garlic butter sauce and it was good. I got the spicy red sauce and I thought it might be too spicy, but it wasn't, quite good. Some of the best restaurant cuisine I have had in a while. My eight month pregnant wife crushed the calzone and my Caesar salad was top notch. Cool place and everyone was friendly with basically three tiers of seated locations. We also enjoyed the fact they had ciders and craft cocktails to sip on while waiting for our meal. Their Clayton and Downtown locations are both wonderful, but I usually visit this location because of its proximity to SLU. The inside of this location is very spacious and has lots of tables. Employees are always very friendly, helpful, and hardworking! They are also very patient when you're feeling indecisive about which calzone flavor you want to try! When dining in you order at the counter and food is brought to you. plenty of indoor seating and a few tables outside too for when it's pleasant out. Staff is generally very helpful with suggestions. Delivery can sometimes be verrrryyy slow like take over an hour but since I get the salad I don't mind it too much, but the calzones get cold. I swapped the garlic butter for pesto which was a good move due to the heavy garlic flavor, and the pesto "lightened" up the dish a bit. The dough of their calzones is so soft and the portion is enough for 1.5 meals for me. I orderened online and it was ready in 15 minutes. We had the figgy piggy ( good but a tad bit too much fig) the Bulls Eye ( nice tender Philly steak like meat and nicely seasoned), Meet me by st Louie (good but it was like a pepperoni pizza and not exotic enough for me) and the apple calzones (really good apple strudel inside and the caramel was inside and out). ALSO don't sleep on the salad! We had the strawberry Fields and it was to die for! Those calzones are rather large. We ended up taking a lot home because it was way too much for two people. Service is always friendly, sizes, taste, and portions are always the same. They must have an excellent staff across the board. Back to salads, they have about 5 of them, but I am stuck on my one true love the Smokehouse add Pesto chicken. Don't get me wrong, you don't have to, but you also do not have to have icing on a cake. So, just do it. The ingredients consisted of: Pepperoni, Italian Sausage, PROVEL Cheese, Mascarpone-Ricotta Blend, Garlic Oil and a side of Meat Sauce. I was pleasantly surprised by how huge their calzones are. The size was large enough for me to eat two meals off of one serving. The calzone was filled with delicious quality meats and cheeses and perfectly cooked. The outside crust was crisp, while the inside crust was airy and pillow soft. All of the ingredients worked well together, providing a delectable palate pleasing bite after bite. They don't skimp on the filling and the meat to cheese ratio was spot on. It's for sure a knife and fork situation needed. The side of meat sauce was equally delicious. It was thick and hearty, nicely seasoned, everything had a great flavor. I would DEFINITELY order from Sauce on The Side again. I would highly suggest that they offer a larger container for the sauce that you receive on the side. There was not enough side sauce for the entire calzone. I cannot speak on their customer service as I did not interact with any employees. I placed my order on-line and a co-worker went and picked it up. I can say order on-line was an ease. First and foremost I'm sorry about the half-eaten calzone but that's how good it was. I couldn't wait to dive in after a long day of meetings I couldn't help myself. We ordered for six people so we qualified for delivery and it was excellent. The delivery driver was nice and even called us to let us know she was outside. The atmosphere is very warm, inviting and family friendly. The tables were clean. The food came out quick and the soda is self serve which is always nice. We got the Buffalo chicken bite sides and they were pretty bland. I was hoping for some Buffalo sauce flavor but didn't get anything resembling that. I got the gonzo calzone and it was really tasty. The breading is a bit chewy and a little tough to cut. You'll need a knife. The only thing I really didn't like was the plate that the calzone was served on. It made it really hard to place the knife on the plate without it falling off. The plate however isn't a big deal and overall the flavor of their ricotta cheese and garlic butter were really the main highlights of the dish. read more

I was in St Louis on Business and met my daughter at "Sauce on the Side" on Manchester Road. The reviews I read seemed positive and the menu was calzones and salad. My daughter and I ordered the same items; 2 "The Fold" calzones with meatballs, chicken pineapple and cheese. The sauces for each to dip were extra. We paid up front and sat at table with No. to identify us at table. within 10 mines two calzones were brought. While they looked fresh and hot, it was disappointing to see that the fillings were sparse and a tiny plastic cup of sauce. It was mostly bread and sliced spice meat balls, few shredded chicken pieces and a pineapple pieces. Seems to be cheese but again mostly bread. The total for two calzones, two sauces and a soda can was $34. While this franchise business may have a local following, it's nothing special And for the money it cost and mediocre amount of fillings, it was mostly bread; nothing special. Not on my return place when I come back again to st Louis(where I lived for 25 years. Look At the pictures and judge for yourself. $34 for self serve just isn't worth it. too much bread with light on the fillings; disappointing. There are too many excellent restaurants in St. Louis that are worth going to for the same price without the minuscule filings. Manager filed a response asking me to take a "survey." The photos of my food "a picture is worth a thousand words." The pictures speak for themselves without me needing to fill out a survey. My expectations is not a standard, first impression of food was mediocre. The pictures speak plenty.
